1945 World Series results
1945 World Series: New York Yankees vs. New York Giants
Results Game 1, October 3rd, 1945, Yankee Stadium World Series Game 1 Goes to New York Thanks to Keller The New York Yankees defeated the New York Giants, 12-11, in Game 1 of the World Series. A big contributor was left fielder Charlie Keller, who was 3-4 with 2 home runs, a double, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 3 runs and drove in 6. The win moves New York into a 1-0 lead in the series. Had Keller not come through in the bottom of the eighth, who knows how the game would've ended? But, with two down, Keller hit a 2-run home run. The Yankees took the lead, 12-10, and never looked back. Giants manager Riggs Stephenson did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead 1-0 Game 2, October 4th, 1945, Yankee Stadium New York Tops New York Again, 7-5 Riding the 3-hit performance of catcher Paul Gillespie, the New York Yankees stopped the visiting New York Giants, 7-5, in Game 2 of the World Series. Gillespie went 3-5 with a double and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Yankees, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0. The Yankees got a gift in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the game tied, 5-5, Eddie Stanky reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 2 runs. It made the score 7-5 New York. "We haven't stopped playing," New York manager Riggs Stephenson said. "We didn't get this far to give up." Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at the Polo Grounds in New York. Yankees lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 6th, 1945, the Polo Grounds New York Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1 The New York Giants have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading New York Yankees, winning, 5-1, at the Polo Grounds. Giants left-hander Preacher Roe threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the Giants to 2-1 in the best-of-7 World Series. New York starter Preacher Roe was exceptional. The 6-foot-2 left-hander allowed 1 run on 4 hits over 9 innings of work. "Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Roe after the game. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York. Yankees lead 2-1 Game 4, October 7th, 1945, the Polo Grounds Giants Even With Yankees After Home Win The New York Giants defeated the New York Yankees, 7-6, in Game 4 of the World Series. Making an impact was first baseman Rudy York, who was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 runs. The win moves New York into a 2-2 tie with New York in the series. York had an important at-bat with a runner on 2nd in the bottom of the sixth, when he hit a run-scoring single. The Giants went on to win. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Giants manager Riggs Stephenson said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York. Series tied 2-2 Game 5, October 8th, 1945, the Polo Grounds Giants Hammered by Greenberg, Drop Game 5 to Yankees New York Yankees first baseman Hank Greenberg was the difference-maker at Polo Grounds, as he led his club to victory in a pivotal Game 5 of the World Series. The Yankees took the 4-3 win over the New York Giants to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series. New York used a timely hit from Russ Derry to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Yankees ahead, 4-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a difference-maker. "We don't have much margin for error now," Giants manager Riggs Stephenson said. "We need to figure out the problem and fix it, immediately." The next game is set to be played on October 10th, 1945 at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead 3-2 Game 6, October 10th, 1945, Yankee Stadium Yankees Top Giants in World Series With a 3-2 win over the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium today, the New York Yankees wrapped up their 5th title in team history. The Yankees left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said New York manager Doc Martin. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as New York celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order. "I hope they have a big celebration," New York manager Riggs Stephenson said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it." Yankees win series 4-2 World Series MVP: LF Charlie Keller (New York Yankees) |
