Cards news: Simmons sent packing to Boston for outfield prospect
The St. Louis Cardinals have traded shortstop Andrelton Simmons and two pitching prospects to the Boston Red Sox for minor league outfielder Yusniel Diaz.
Although Simmons had won the NL Gold Glove in his only season in St. Louis, he struggled at the plate during the first half -- had a nice second half -- and complained from the All-Star break on about wanting a trade, which showed in his morale ratings, despite his improved play. His departure takes $15 million off the books. Going to Boston with Simmons will be left-handed pitcher Jeff Belge (Johnston City) and right-hander Ludwin Jiminez (DRL). Diaz is a right-handed outfielder who can play off three positions. He batted .328 with 28 home runs and 100 RBIs a year ago for AA Tulsa. Last edited by rink23; 06-21-2018 at 03:58 AM. |

Cards news: Deal with Braves brings Inciarte to St. Louis but costs them O'Neill and Andujar
The trade of Andrelton Simmons to the Boston Red Sox, opened the door for another trade for the St. Louis Cardinals, this one which should fill a big team need.
The Cardinals traded highly touted prospects Miguel Andujar (third base) and Tyler O'Neill to the Atlanta Braves for center fielder Ender Inciarte. Inciarte, 29, is a two-time Gold Glove winner and a one-time All-Star, and is expected to play every day in center and possibly bat lead off as he anchors an impressive outfield playing between right fielder Bryce Harper and left fielder Marcel Ozuna. The Cardinals gave up a lot of potential. Andujar was thought to be the team's third baseman of the future, but did not have a great 2019 season when the job was given to him. When the Cardinals signed Nolan Arenado in the off-season there was no place for Andujar to play. Similarly, O'Neill has posted some big minor league seasons for the Cardinals since being acquired from the Mariners in 2018, but has struggled in the few times he has had a chance to play in the majors. The re-signing of Ozuna to play left, once again made O'Neill a man with no place to play. Last edited by rink23; 06-21-2018 at 04:18 AM. |
