The Atlantics good form slipped slightly in June to see the team fall back from the leaders in the NL. The team picked up 6 wins and 8 losses during the month. Thos sees them retain second place in the NL table but slip back to 5 games behind the leading Cincinnati Reds.



The batting was steady all month to score 72 runs. The hot bat was in the hands of Second Baseman Jacob Doyle. Doyle played 12 games with 9 being as a starter. He had 30 at bats in these games as he hit the ball 11 times. These hits produced 8 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .367.

The Only Nolan was again the best of the 2 starters this month. He started 7 games in which he won 4 of them while pitching 66 innings. These innings produced 54 hits and 14 earned runs against him for an ERA of 1.91. The team gave up a total of 81 runs during the month.

The fans received some very sad player news early in the month after the team announced that they were parting ways with 34 year old First Baseman Wes Fisler. Fisler had been out of the game since last August with a ruptured medial collateral ligament. This past month he was told that the injury was not recovering as expected and that he would not play baseball again. Fislers retirement has bought an end to a wonderful career that saw him voted an All Star 6 times along with gaining the 1871 MLB Championship with the Atlantics and 1 Golden Glove award in 8 seasons. He played 377 games for the Brooklyn Atlantics, all of them as a starter. Those games saw him take 1662 at bats and claim 461 hits with 249 runs and 213 RBI's. His average over his career was .277. The fans will miss this likeable player but wish him well for his future. (real life stats 6 seasons for 273 games with 414 hits from 1334 at bats and an average of .310)

The White Stockings fans are starting to get frustrated with their teams inability to keep up the pressure on the leaders. June saw a very poor month from the team as they picked up only 5 wins in the 14 games played. This has left them in 3rd place in the NL table, 6 games behind the leading Cincinnati Reds.



The batting was solid with 75 runs scored during the month. The batter with the best figures was Left Fielder Tom York. York started all 14 games and had 62 at bats. He produced 26 hits to gain 8 runs and 9 RBI's for an average of .419

The pitching showed patchy form during the month. Jim Britt continued to show his experience as he produced solid figures with 3 wins from his 7 starts. He pitched 65.2 innings to give 65 hits and 19 earned runs for an ERA of 2.60. The team gave up a total of 91 runs during the month.

Pete Hotaling returned from injury.

Ross Barnes's season has been interrupted again towards the end of the month as the team announced he would be given personal time to deal with issues of a non baseball nature. The club said that they would have to plan to be without him for a few weeks until these issues were resolved.

1st July 1879

The fans of the Reds are continuing to enjoy an excellent season from their team. The team won 10 of the 14 games to open up a solid gap at the top of the NL table. The Reds now lead the way by 5 games in the NL.



The batting had an excellent month scoring 110 runs. The star of the show was Rookie Centre Fielder John O'Rourke. O'Rourke started all 14 games and came to the plate 62 times. These plate appearances had him clipping the ball into space 27 times to score 11 runs and 22 RBI's, including a high 4 home runs. His average for the month was .435. He claimed both the NL Batter of the Month award and the NL Rookie of the Month award as the voters gave him the adulation the month deserved.

The team replaced the injured Lon Knight and gave Al Pratt his chance to be the starter in the month of June. Pratt didn't need to be asked twice as he took his chance with both hands. He won 5 games in 6 starts from 7 games played. He pitched 47 innings and gave up 49 hits and 13 earned runs for an ERA of 2.49. The NL voters were so impressed they awarded him the NL Pitcher of the month award. The team gave up a total of 78 runs.

The Blues form showed a slight dip in June as they played slightly below average. The team picked up 6 wins and 7 losses during the month. They are still sitting top of the AL table but their lead has been reduced to only 1 game.



The batting has an up and down month to score 68 runs. Left Fielder Dave Eggler put up the best month during June as he started 11 games. He claimed 15 hits from 46 at bats. These hits saw him score 4 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .326

The pitching had its struggles during the month. The best starting pitcher was Will White. White picked up 3 wins from 7 starts. He pitched 60.2 innings, giving up 67 hits and 24 earned runs for an ERA of 3.56.

The team decided that their needed an extra piece to the puzzle to push on for the pennant. They traded 27 year old Third Baseman Bill Hague and 24 year old Left Fielder Tom Mansell to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 28 year old First Baseman Michael Campbell. The fans are holding back their feelings on this trade until they see if this does help the team to the pennant or not.

While the fans of the Athletics saw only an average month from their team they are still happy overall as they edge closer to the leaders. The team picked up 7 wins from the 13 games played. They now sit only 1 game behind the leaders in 2nd place in the AL table.



The pitching is what kept the team in the hunt for wins during June. Starting Pitcher Pud Galvin is showing his resurgent this year is continuing. He started 6 games and won 4. He pitched 51 innings for 43 hits and 11 earned runs against him. This earned him the AL Pitcher of the Month award from the voters. The team gave up 72 runs.

The batting was hit and miss all month as they scored 73 runs. The batter in form during the month was Rookie Short Stop Sadie Houck. Houck started 10 games and had 38 at bats. He claimed 12 hits for 6 runs and 6 RBI's foran average of .316

It was an average month for the Brown Stockings that left them treading water in the AL table. The team had 7 wins and 6 losses through the month. They now sit in 3rd place in the AL table 6 games behind the leaders.



The batting was solid all month to score 81 runs. Left Fielder George Hall had an excellent month.He started 13 games and had 58 at bats. These at bats produced 26 hits along with 16 runs and 9 RBI's for an average of .448. The AL Voters decided this performance was worthy of the AL Batter of the Month award.

Blondie Purcell picked up the AL Rookie of the Month award with an average of .412 in 12 games with 7 starts.

The pitching was solid during the month with the best coming from Sam Weaver. Weaver picked up 4 wins from 7 game starts. He pitched 55 innings, giving up 59 hits and 18 earned runs for an ERA of 2.95. The team gave up a total of 78 runs.

Catcher Pop Snyder suffered a blow to his season as he picked up an injury mid month. He Went down with an oblique strain during a match and has been diagnosed with a 5 week recovery time.

The fans of the Orioles finally saw an improvement from their team during August. The team picked up 7 wins from the 12 games played. They still sit bottom of the AL Table and are still 11 games behind the leading Cleveland Blues.



The batting put in a solid display during August as they scored 55 runs. The player that bought them the best performances was new signing Second Baseman Jacob Doyle. Doyle started 11 games during the month for the Orioles with 35 at bats. He had 12 hits which saw him score 6 runs with 6 RBI's. His average was .343 while in the Orioles jersey during the month.

First Baseman Ed Cogswell picked up the AL Rookie of the Month award with an average of .261 from 46 at bats in 12 game starts.

The pitching was a mixed bag during the month. The best figures came from Frank Hankinson. Hankinson returned from injury mid month and started 3 games with 2 wins. He pitched 27.1 innings to give up 26 hits and 4 earned runs for an ERA of 1.32. The team gave up a total of 52 runs during the month.

Frank Hankinsons injury diagnosis was given out to the press. He missed 3 weeks with elbow soreness and returned to action towards the end of July.

Fraley Rogers returned from injury mid month.

The team made more team changes to try and improve their season. They traded 23 year old Centre Fielder Jack Farrell and 23 year old Minor League Left Fielder Ed Hengle to the Brooklyn Atlantics in exchange for 23 year old Second Baseman Jacob Doyle. The fans are looking forward to seeing what Doyle can do after his All Star selection.

The team had the following players voted into the All Star Squad. Pitchers Cherokee Fisher, Hugh O'Neill and Ed Stratton and First Baseman Ed Cogswell,

None of these players made the starting line up in the AL's 7-6 win.

The fans of the Red Caps continued to see their favourites struggle to find any form during July. The team picked up only 4 wins from the 12 games played. This has left them sitting bottom of the NL table, 9 games behind the leading Cincinnati Reds.



The batting had a hit and miss month as they scored 58 runs. The star with the hot bat was First Baseman Charley Jones. Jones had an excellent month with the bat as he started all 12 games. He went to bat 47 times and claimed 20 hits. These hits produced 9 runs and 6 RBI's for an average of .426. The NL voters decided that he was worthy of this months NL Batter of the Month award.

The pitching was a mixed bag all month. Tommy Bond was again the best of the starters as he picked up 3 wins from 6 starts. He pitched 56 innings, giving up 61 hits and 15 earned runs for an ERA of 2.41. The team gave up 66 runs in July.

Bill Craver fractured a Rib during the month and was ruled out for 5 weeks.

The team picked up Bobby Clack from the Brooklyn Atlantics through the waiver system.

The NL All Star squad waas selected and the following players got the nod. Pitchers Tommy Bond and Jack Neagle and First Baseman Charley Jones,

The fans of the Atlantics continued to urge their team on as they tried to close the gap to the leaders in July. The team managed 7 wins from the 12 games during the month. This left the team in second place still 4 games behind the leading Cincinnati Reds.



The pitching had a very good month from the starters. The best of these was Harry McCormick. McCormick started 6 games and picked up 4 wins. He pitched 48.1 innings during these games to give up 43 hits and 9 earned runs for an ERA of 1.68. These figures earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month award. The team gave up a total of 67 runs

The batting was fairly solid during the month with 64 runs scored. Centre Fielder Al Hall put up the best showing with the bat during July. He came to the plate 46 times in 12 games with 11 starts. These plate appearances allowed him to collect 17 hits with 7 runs and 6 RBI's. He had an average of .370 for the month.

Right Fielder Charlie Eden stupidly ended his season early after getting into a fight with his father-in-law. This fight ended in him being taken to hospital with a broken kneecap. He will be out for 8 months.

The team lost Bobby Clack to the Boston Red Caps after placing him on waivers.

The team also traded 23 year old Second Baseman Jacob Doyle to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 23 year old Centre Fielder Jack Farrell and 23 year old Minor League Left Fielder Ed Hengle. The fans are not sure if this was the best trade the team could have made as Doyle had just made the All Star Squad.

The Brooklyn Atlantics players that were voted into the NL All Star Squad were Pitchers The Only Nolan, Fred Corey and Frank Pearce, First Baseman Joe Hornung, Second Baseman Jacob Doyle and Centre Fielder Al Hall

The team picked up 68 runs in an up and down month with the bat. The best batter was rookie Third Baseman Jack Glasscock. Glasscock started 11 of the 12 games he played and went up to bat 52 times. These at bats saw him clipping the ball into space 21 times for an average of .404. He also scored 8 runs with 6 RBI's. This work saw him voted the NL Rookie of the Month awarding

Jim Britt continued to show the way with the ball in Chicago. He picked up 3 wins from his 6 games starts. He pitched 57.1 innings giving up 60 hits and 11 earned runs for an ERA of 1.73. The team gave up 68 runs during the month.

Ross Barnes returned to the team mid month after sorting out his personal issues.

The White Stockings had good representation in the NL All Star Squad. The players were Pitchers Jim Britt, Harry Arundel, Charles Witherow and Rynie Wolters, Third Baseman Ned Williamson, Short Stop Jack Glasscock, Left Fielder Tom York and Right Fielder Holly Hollingshead.

The Reds fans saw their team slip closer to the chasers after an average month during July. The team picked up 6 wins from 12 games. This has left them leading the NL table by 4 games from the chasing pack.



The batting had a solid month with 71 runs scored. Right Fielder Mike Dorgan had the best month with the bat in July. He came to the plate 46 times in 12 starts to claim 15 hits. These hits produced 7 runs and 3 RBI's for an average of .326

The pitching was spread around players again this month. The best continued to be Al Pratt. Pratt started only 3 games and he won them all. He pitched 27 innings, giving up 19 hits and 3 earned runs for an ERA of 1.00. The team gave up 60 runs during the month.

Short Stop Ed Caskin missed about 2 weeks of the month with an oblique strain.

Third Baseman Cal McVey lost his chance to play in the All Star game after his selection as he strained his Posterior Cruciate Ligament at the start of the month. He was ruled out for 4 weeks. He returned at the very end of the month.

Catcher John Clapp strained his Oblique at the end of the month and will be out for 2 weeks.

The strong Reds team was well represented in the NL All Star Squad. The players voted in were Pitchers Monte Ward, Charlie Mason and U McDoolan, Catchers Jim Clapp and Bill Phillips, Second Baseman Bob Ferguson, Third Baseman Cal McVey, Left Fielder Orator Shafer, Centre Fielder John O'Rourke and Right Fielders Mike Dorgan and Gat Stires.

Will White had an excellent month on the mound. He picked up 5 wins from the 6 games he started. He pitched 50.2 innings in those games to give up 45 hits and 9 earned runs for an ERA of 1.60. This work saw him voted the AL Pitcher of the Month for July. The team gave up 51 runs during the month

The batting's form was a little off during the month as they scored 58 runs. Catcher Charlie Bennett put in a solid performance all month. He started all 12 games and had 51 at bats. These at bats produced 16 hits for 7 runs and 6 RBI's for an average of .314

Left Fielder Dave Eggler strained his hamstring during the middle of the month. He was ruled out for 5 weeks.

Third Baseman Mike Burke pulled up with back stiffness towards the end of the month. He will be out for 2 weeks.

The batting struggled a little with 48 runs scored. Left Fielder George Hall had another excellent month in July as he claimed 18 hits from 52 plate appearances in 12 game starts. These hits produced 7 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .346. This work saw him voted the AL Batter of the Month.

Starter George Zettlein was the pitcher with the best work in July. He started 6 games and won 3 of them. He pitched 51.2 innings to give up 45 hits and 9 earned runs. His ERA on the month was 1.57. the team gave up a total of 53 runs.

The Brown Stockings had quite a few players called up to the AL All Star Squad. These were Pitchers George Zettlein, Martin Malone, U O'Rourke, Laurie Reis and Harry Salisbury, Catcher Pop Snyder, First Baseman Jim Foran, Short Stop John Barlow, Left Fielder George Hall, Centre Fielder George Gore and Right Fielder Blondie Purcell.

The fans of the Orioles saw their team finally find the form that has been missing for most of the season. The team picked up 10 wins from the 14 games played. This has moved the team up to 3rd place in the AL table and move them to within 8 games of the leaders.



The batting finally found its best form as they scored 80 runs during the month. The star with the hot bat was Second Baseman George Wright. The Red Caps have never really been in the pennant race this season but August did see them put together a solid month for their fans to enjoy. The team picked up 8 wins from the 14 games played. They still sit in last place in the NL but have kept the gap to the leaders down to 9 games while only being 2 behind 3rd place.



The batting continued to produce good numbers as they scored 81 runs during the month. The player that continues to shine with the bat in hand is Left Fielder Buttercup Dickerson. Dickerson started 12 of the 13 games he played and had 53 at bats. These at bats had him clipping the ball into space 18 times to score 9 runs with 6 RBI's. His average for the month was .340
