NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Tuesday, September 12th, 1939 For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in North American BaseBall League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Pete Reiser, 20 year-old center fielder out of college. 2. Elmer Valo, 18 year-old left fielder out of high-school. 3. Pat Mullin, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 4. Al Javery, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 5. Ernie White, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Dom DiMaggio, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 7. Wally Judnich, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 8. Tiny Bonham, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Pee Wee Reese, 21 year-old shortstop out of college. 10. Stan Spence, 24 year-old left fielder out of college.

Awards Best Defenders Announced by NL Thursday, October 19th, 1939 What does it take to win a Glove Wizard Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the National League consists of: Pitcher: Cy Blanton (Boston Bees) Catcher: Ben Huffman (Brooklyn Dodgers) First Baseman: Salty Parker (New York Giants) Second Baseman: Lonny Frey (St. Louis Cardinals) Third Baseman: Eddie Miller (New York Giants) Shortstop: Lou Boudreau (Philadelphia Phillies) Left Fielder: Charlie Keller (Cincinnati Reds) Center Fielder: Joe DiMaggio (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: Roy Weatherly (Cincinnati Reds) Season's Best Fielders Selected by AL Thursday, October 19th, 1939 Good glovemen take pride in their defensive skills. The legendary first baseman, surrounded by his joyful family, looked on as his plaque went up on the wall of fame at baseball's shrine to its greatest players. After the induction ceremony, one of the Hall of Famers notorious for doctoring the ball was asked how did he pitch to Werden. "Greaseball, greaseball, greaseball, that's all I threw him... and he still hit them. He's the only player in baseball who consistently hit my grease. He saw the ball so well, I guess he could pick out the dry side." The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game. Crawford received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said, nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 2487 games, Crawford batted .308 with 2914 hits, 107 home runs, 1660 RBIs and 1634 runs scored. Accomplishments Johnny Mize hit three HRs on July 18th, the second time in two years. 1940 Season
I will take over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Brooklyn Wins Lottery for SP Sherid Friday, November 17th, 1939 The Dodgers and Roy Sherid reached an accord earlier today which brings the starting pitcher to town for 5 years. Sherid will pocket $160,000 total and is widely expected to contribute significantly to the club's playoff drive. In his career Sherid has compiled an ERA of 4.38 with 105 victories and 86 defeats and has held opponents to a .282 batting average. He also has struck out 535 batters in 1707.1 innings and given up 1881 hits. $352,000 Lands LF Greenberg for Reds Sunday, December 10th, 1939 The euphoria surrounding a big name deal can sometimes overshadow the deal itself. Occasionally a team will mortgage its future to make a big splash, though no one in Cincinnati was worried about that today as the club finalized terms with Hank Greenberg. Greenberg will earn $44,000 per year over 8 years. In a career spanning 1287 games, Greenberg has batted .310 with 1598 hits, 309 home runs, 1075 RBIs, and 991 runs scored. Cramer, Frink Swap Teams Monday, December 18th, 1939 St. Louis and Brooklyn have agreed in principle to a trade. The Browns will send 34-year-old center fielder Doc Cramer to the Dodgers for 28-year-old center fielder Fred Frink and 24-year-old right fielder Stan Spence. The deal is expected to be finalized shortly and the clubs will be introducing their new players to the press when the paperwork is complete. During his career Cramer is batting .296 and has totaled 8 home runs. His all-time numbers show Frink is carrying a .326 career batting average with 4 home runs and 39 RBIs. Brooklyn Loses Ken Raffensberger Saturday, April 6th, 1940 Baseball can be a contact sport at times. It can exact a harsh toll on a player's body. In a recent game against Pittsburgh Pirates, Dodgers reliever Ken Raffensberger was injured throwing a pitch and is expected to miss 4 weeks with elbow soreness. The team did not announce any roster moves today related to this injury. The Brooklyn skipper told BNN that personnel decisions would be announced as early as tomorrow. Top 100 Prospects List Published Tuesday, April 16th, 1940 The season is about to start, so it's time to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 18-year-old starting pitcher Hal Newhouser of the Chicago Cubs is the #1 prospect overall. Here is the top 10: 1) SP Hal Newhouser, 18, Chicago Cubs 2) CF Pete Reiser, 21, Detroit Tigers 3) SP Al Javery, 21, Philadelphia Athletics 4) CF Wally Judnich, 23, Boston Red Sox 5) SP Mickey Harris, 23, St. Louis Cardinals 6) CF Pat Mullin, 22, St. Louis Browns 7) CF Dom DiMaggio, 23, Chicago Cubs 8) SS Pee Wee Reese, 21, Pittsburgh Pirates 9) SP Bob Muncrief, 24, Chicago White Sox 10) LF Elmer Valo, 19, Philadelphia Phillies

The rosters are set. The line-ups are set. Baseball is back! The 1940 season starts today with these match-ups: Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox St. Louis Browns @ Detroit Tigers New York Yankees @ Philadelphia Athletics Boston Red Sox @ Washington Senators Brooklyn Dodgers @ Boston Bees Chicago Cubs @ Cincinnati Reds Philadelphia Phillies @ New York Giants Pittsburgh Pirates @ St. Louis Cardinals

That's what I loved about him." Those sentiments were expressed by one of Willie Keeler's managers at the gifted right fielder's Hall of Fame induction ceremony yesterday. On a cloudy, but comfortable afternoon, he took his rightful place among the best North American BaseBall League players of all-time. The newest Hall of Famer assessed his career in these words: "I did my best to contribute to the team -- in the field, at the plate, in the dugout. I didn't care about personal numbers. I just went out there to win." Keeler played in 1819 games with a .346 career batting average and 2549 hits. He also scored 1265 runs and drove in 1088 runs with 39 home runs. Hall of Fame Inducts Center Fielder Saturday, October 26th, 1940 "From the first time I saw him play, I knew he had the potential to be one of the best," Bill Lange's first manager said, "and the more I saw him play, the more certain I was that he would reach that potential." This manager was just one of the people there at Lange's enshrinement in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. It was a celebration of the career of one of the shining stars of his generation. His teammates loved him and opposing fans loved to hate him, but respect followed him everywhere, as evidenced by the large crowd at the ceremony. Not only were teammates there, but opposing players and managers as well, along with a large throng of fans. The man of the moment was overcome with emotion when he finally took his turn at the podium to speak. "This is one of the greatest moments of my life and to share it with all of you here is... simply amazing. I would just like to thank my family and all my teammates for their support during my journey here. Individual honor was never my goal, winning was, but this is more than I could have ever dreamed." Lange retired with a .307 career batting average. He mainly played center fielder, participated in 2087 games, hit 96 home runs and batted in 1299 runs.

Sunday, July 20th, 1941 It was a great day for Jimmie Foxx, but not a good one for his Washington Senators. The 33-year-old catcher reached a personal milestone with his 500th career homer, but it wasn't enough to beat the Cleveland Indians, who came away with a 7-4 victory. Foxx finished the day with 1 hit, 2 runs batted in and 1 run scored. "Well, I've conceded the fact that you can't will yourself to hit a home run," he said. "I tried hard for the last few days. It was getting to be embarrassing with the crowd standing up every time I came to the plate." Lifetime Foxx is batting .311 with 2819 hits, 500 home runs, 1699 runs scored and 1757 RBIs.
