1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

Coming up on Tuesday 17th January 1967....

Quite a bit of action again coming your way...

If they got a record, I'll be doing a rating of them. If it say already rated, I've got a rated fighter either original in the game or one already posted by someone on this forum or cornwork or somewhere. So a few more to do coming up.

Johnny Ould - LHW(10-11-2,6) vs Jimmy Tibbs-LHW(16-2-1,13)
BoxRec lists these guys as a CW and SMW respectively. BoxRec is classifying guys by the modern day weight class breakdown. Best I can tell by the data available, for 1967 I'd class these guys both LHW. There's some more of this.

Terry Daly-HW(16-3-0,13) vs Len Rocky James - HW(10-15-1,5)
Heny Clark-HW Rated already vs Bill McMurray-HW Rated already
Ray(Junior) Ellis-HW(6-12-0,6) vs Fred Lewis-HW(38-15-1,24)
Florentino Fernandez-LHW Rated already vs Willie Tiger-LHW(15-15-2,8)
Willie McIntyre-HW(12-15-4,4) vs Tony Flame-HW(1-3-0,0)
Willie Ray Richardson-HW Rated already vs Tony Burwell-HW Rated already
Dave Zyglewicz=HW Rated already vs Charlie Hall-HW(6-37-3,3)
Karl Zrheide-HW(39-29-5,9) vs Cassius Clay Scott-LHW(5-19-0,2)
Mark Tessman-LHW Rated already vs Al Franklin-HW(2-6-0,1)
Zora Folley-HW Rated already vs Floyd Joyner-HW Rated already

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/17/67 Tuesday
London, England
Jimmy Tibbs – LHW (9-0-0) vs. Johnny Ould – LHW (9-9-0)

Jimmy Tibbs - UK Rating 4
Light Heavyweight 1966-70
16 wins / 2 losses / 1 draw / 13KO

Hometown/Birthplace: West Ham, England

Ratng by: Rocco Del Sesto

Tibbs compiled an impressive looking record fighting exclusively in his homeland England. Impressive looking is about all there is to say about it. The only opponents he fought who's names we've run across are Tommy Woods, Tom Calderwood, Johnny Ould, and Clive Tranter. His only losses were to Ould(10-11-2,6) and Guinea Roger(13-32-1,11)

Johnny Ould - UK Rating 1
LIght Heavyweight 1961-67
10 wins / 11 losses / 2 draws / 6 KO

Hometown: Bermondsey, England

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

After a 5-1-0 and 1 NC start, Ould fought Stan Cullis for teh British (Southern Area) LHW Title in June 1962. Cullis KO'd Ould in the 9th round. Later in 1963 and 64 he lost to Bob Nicholson, fought an 8 round draw with Johnny Hendrickson and lost by 5th round KO to Pekka Kokkonen. In February 1966 Ould fought again for the British (Southern Area) LHW Title, this time against Bob Nicholson. The two fought to a 10 round draw. Ould finished out his career in 1966-67 with losses to Renato Moraes, Eddie Avoth, Lloyd Walford and Dave Barber while managing wins over a Vernon Allen and Jimmy Tibbs.

The fight....
Young hard hitting Jimmy Tibbs out of West Ham brings his undefeated record to London to take on Johnny Ould from Bermondsey. While Tibbs career is looking on the bright side, Ould is just trying to keep it going. He managed a 5th round TKO back in December against a Vernon Allen (2-10-0 at the time). His 6 previous fights before that victory over Vernon he’d lost 5 while managing only a 10 round draw against Bob Nicholson. Of Tibb’s first 9 wins, 6 were stoppages and you would think this fight would have ended in more the same results for Tibbs. In reality though, Ould pulled out an upset of sorts taking Tibbs through the full scheduled 8 rounds and pulled off a decision victory handing Tibbs his first defeat. An upset or just some proof of how bad maybe Tibbs first 9 opponents were?
Our replay fight really turned out to be an entertaining affair. After rating these two fighters, I really did not think Ould would have a chance against Tibbs to last very long. As it was though, Ould managed to take the fight to Tibbs quite well for the first 4 rounds as they alternated with Tibbs taking rounds 1 and 3 and Ould 2 and 4 on all three scorers cards. Tibbs took control though in the 5 and 6th rounds out pointing Ould 30 to 2 combined in those 2 rounds. Then in 7th round, Tibbs just poured it on. In the first 2-1/2 minutes of the round Ould goes down 3 times but manages to get up each time before the 10 count. Then finally at 2:45 in the 7th, Tibbs lands a hard cross knocking Ould on his back and he’s counted out. KO victory for Tibbs at 2:55 of 7th round!

Terry Daly – HW (1-0-0) vs. Len Rocky James – HW (6-11-0)

Terry Daly - UK Rating 1
Heavyweight 1966-69
16 wins / 3 losses / 0 draws / 13 KO

Hometown/Birthplace: Battersea, Enland

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Daly's first 10 victories were by TKO, the longest fights lasting into the 4th round. Not much at all to look at in opponents in those first 10 wins, the best maybe being Derek Groombridge who was a career 10-8-0,1KO who had the only winning record amongst those opponents. During the time of those 10 wins, Daly suffered 2 losses, both at the hands of Len Rocky James. The first, in Daly's 2nd career fight in January 1967, James KO'd Daly in the 3rd round. In the 2nd fight in Feb 1968, James won by 1st round TKO.

After the 2nd James loss, Daly won his next 7 fights including wins over Dennis Avoth(22-21-3,4), Obe Hepburn, Vic Moore and Rudolph Vaughan(12-12-0,10). Then in Sept 1069 he climbed into the ring against Bunny Johnson, for his first real test against any fighters of any talent. Daly failed the test, with the fight stopped in the 1st round. Maybe realizing his true lack of talent and ability, Daly never fought again.

Len Rocky James - UK Rating 1
Heavyweight 1963-68
10 wins / 15 losses / 1 draw / 5 KO

Alias Len
Hometown: Bristol, England
Birthplace: Pontypridd

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Len never built any consistancy in his career. He started out 3-7-0 with 2 of those victories when his opponents Charlie White and JIm Monaghan were disqualified. The other win was a 6 round decision over Billy Wynter(12-31-3,5). He lost by 5th round TKo to Ron Gray(20-20-2,10) and then lost an 8 round decision to Carl Gizzi, a 6 round decision to Wynter and then lost by 5th round TKo in June 1965 in a fight for the Welsh Heavyweight Title.

Later fights against some opponents we've seen thus far in the game were wins over Terry Daly twice and Doyle Brown and losses against Ermanno Festorazzi, Rocky Campbell, Brown, and Roger Tighe.

The Fight....
Daly is fighting his 2nd career professional bout having won his debut a month ago with a 4th round TKO of Derek Groombridge. James has been around since 1963. He’s faced Carl Gizzi a couple times as his biggest competition in a lackluster career thus far. He’s coming off 3 straight defeats hoping to get untracked against the green Daly. As it turned out James KO’d Daly in the 3rd round in what was to be the first of only 3 defeats against 16 wins in Daly’s brief career.
Our replay, a scheduled 6 round went the full distance. It turned out all Daly’s show to reverse the actual outcome in 1967. It was a Unanimous Decision for Daly scoring 60-51, 60-51, 59-53. Daly dropped James for a 6 count in the 3rd and then sent him into the canvas again in the 5th for an 8 count. That round pulled the win into the clear open for Daly. James managed to regroup himself and fight a tight 6th round, but by then it was too late with an insurmountable advantage for James to overtake.

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/17/67 Tuesday
Sacramento, CA, USA
For The California State Heavyweight Title
Henry Clark – HW (8-3-2) vs. Bill McMurray – HW (20-15-2)

Hey!! My first Title fight of some kind!!!

Henry Clark - USA Rating 5 (In the Game)
Heavyweight 1964-79
32 wins / 13 losses / 4 draws / 9 KO

Hometown: San Francisco, CA
Manager: Joe Herman

Started out career with losses against Joey Orbillo(17-4-1,9) and Jimmy Harryman(8-3-1,6) and a 2 round TD with Johnny Gordon(13-3-3,7). In his 5th career fight Clark fought a young Manuel Ramos(7-1 at the time), winning a 10 round decision. A little more then a year later in Sept 1965 Clark won his 8th consecutive fight winning a 10 round decision over George (Scrap Iron) Johnson. After that he then fought an 8 rounc NC against Amos Lincoln, a 10 round draw with Bobby Stininato(41-19-2), and then lost a 10 round decision to zora Folley in Oct 1966. In January 1967 he fought Bill McMurray for the California State HW Title, winning by a 12 round decision.

After a 10 round decision over Steve Grant(13-11-1,5), Clark successfully defended his California State HW title with 12 round decisions over Fred Lewis(38-15-1,24), Eddie Machen, and Steve Grant in March and May 1967. He then won fights against Roger Rischer and Leotis Martin before loosing by 7th round KO to Sonny Liston in July 1968. Clark defended his California title once again in Sept 1968 defeating Jimmy Gilmore by 10 round decision. Then in 1969, Clark fought a 10 round draw with Brian London, beat Bob Stallings by KO, Lost a 10 round decision to Al Jones, lost an 8 round UD to Jeff Merritt and KO'd Bob Dunlop. The Dunlop win started another win streak of 8 straight victories including two over Leweni Waqa(25-15-1,16), Jimmy Fletcher(13-9-3,8), Chuck Haynes(12-5-3,4), Fred Lewis and finally a 10 round decision over Jack O'Halloran in June 1972. Two months later Clark and O'Halloran fought a rematch, this time for the California State HW title. O'Halloran was victorious this time with a 12 round decision.

Clark then lost to Ken Norton and a Steve Carter(16-6-0,7) before starting another winning streak through early 1975, this time 7 straight, including wins over Jeff Merritt, Mac Foster, Jimmy Gilmore, Roy (Tiger) Williams and Jody Ballard. After a 10 round draw with Jimmy Richards(27-11-4,12) Clark finished his career with consecutive losses to Earnie Shavers in 1976, a loss to Howard Smith in his only fight in 1977 and then after a 2-1/2 year layoff, he came back for one last fight, a 10 round decision loss to Bernardo Mercado.

Bill McMurray - USA Rating 2
Heavyweight 1959-71
23 wins / 24 losses / 3 draws / 8 KO

Hometown: Sacramento, CA

Original Rating by: Mark Sumagyi,Gunsmoke
New Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto
(From Mark's rating, I upped the HP by 1, lowered the KO rating by 1 and upped his 3Pt punches some. That changed his overall rating from a 1 to a 2)

Another of the crop of California heavyweights from the 60's. McMurray was a professional opponent for some of the biggest names of the decade. From 1959 till the start of 1962 McMurray built a reasonable 13-3-0 record fighting against Club Fighters and nobodies. At the start of 1962 he fought fellow trialhorse Paul Andrews, right at the the end of Andrews career, to whom he lost a 10 round decision. He wouldn't win again till the early part of 1963 when he knocksout George Logan in the eighth. He win one, then lose one through the next 4 fights before facing Eddie Machen in his push to a World title fight, he would be kayoed in seven. He had a five month layoff before accepting a fight against Charley Powell which he also lost by KO, this time in three rounds and his once reasonable career record was looking decidedly more shabby at 16-9-0. Two tough fights against Elmer Rush followed the disappointing outing against Powell which result in a draw and a split decision loss. Somehow his run of 4 defeats earned him a shot at the California State Heavyweight title against Roger Rischer. Rischer was too polished however and McMurray lost on points after 12 rounds. Rischer agreed to a non-title rematch and again proved too good, this time taking a decision in 10.

Once again McMurray fought Rush in October of 64, the third time he fought Rush since May of that year, and again he would lose, this time in the eighth via knockout. That would be his second string of 4 straight losses and his record at this point in his last ten fights was 1-8-1, his lone win coming against Billy Stephan (KO 4). Taking 1965 off to make decisions about his future in the fight game, McMurray would return in 1966 with two straight victories over Bobby Stininato and Dancing Jackson. After splitting two fights against Willie Ray Richardson, McMurray would face Thad Spencer for the California State title, prior to Spencer's participation in the Heavyweight elimination tournament in just under 12 months time, which he won with Knockout in the seventh round, stunning the crowd. His first title defense was against Tony Alongi which ended in a Technical Draw with both fighters badly cut. His second defense in January 1967 was against Henry Clark who beats McMurray on points in 12 rounds. In March he would pad Floyd Patterson's record lossing in the first by KO. Rising young fighter Dave Zyglewicz (22-0-0 at the time of the fight) was his next opponent of note at the end of 1967, whom he losses to via decision after 10 rounds.

In March of 1968, McMurray began a murderous schedule which saw him fight some fearsome punchers to close his career, the first of these was against a rebounding Sonny Liston eager to prove he was still a force, loosing by KO in the fourth. Six months later he ponied up again, this time against young Boone Kirkman, whom he lost to by points after 10 rounds.

On the 29th of May he would fight California's next great Heavyweight, Ken Norton, whom he would lose to in his inimitable style, this time being KO'd in the seventh. Norton's record after this fight moved to 10-0-0 (9). At the turn of the decade McMurray's time was nearly done and a third round TKO loss to Boone Kirkman and a first round KO loss to Earnie Shavers sent McMurray into retirement.

The Fight.....
Henry Clark, out of San Francisco is trying to jump start his career to start taking it elsewhere out of the west coast boxing scene. He’s coming off three disappointing fights in 1966 having fought an 8 round no contest with Amos Lincoln, a 10 round draw with Bobby Stininato and then in late October lost a 10 round decision to aging heavyweight, former top contender, Zora Folley, here in Sacramento. Clark comes back to Sacramento here in January 1967 to take on Sacramento native, Bill McMurray, the reigning California State Heavyweight Champion. McMurray won the title the past September with a 7th round TKO victory over Thad Spencer. McMurray’s last fight was in November, a tough fight that was stopped and declared a technical draw in the 6th round of a scheduled 10 round affair with Tony Alongi. The bout was stopped after it was felt both fighters were too badly cut for it to continue. BoxingRec does not show the Alongi/McMurray fight being a California title fight, though Mark Sumagyi’s nice bio writeup on McMurray in the rating he’d posted for McMurray states that fight as a title fight. This writing honestly does not know.
In January 1967, Clark and McMurray fought out a 12 round battle that ended in a decision victory for Clark to take the California title away from McMurray. Our replay fight also goes the full scheduled 12 rounds. Many of the early and mid rounds are closely fought but Clark manages to carry most of those rounds. The late rounds, Clark begins to take more control of the fight, while totally dominating the last two rounds, out pointing McMurray 33-10. Neither fighter manages to put the other down on the canvas in this one, and in the end, it’s a Unanimous Decision victory for Henry Clark. The final judges cards read 119-110, 116-113, 118-112.

The file I've posted for Clark is the original game rating, I only added the bio info. The McMurray file is Mark's original creation with a couple little tweeks I noted above. I decided to play test McMurray a little bit seeing I had quite a few of his opponents in my data base, especially for the latter half of his career. Mark, your rating was pretty darn good! Leave it if you'd like with Mark's original numbers and McMurray will fight pretty good for you. In my testing though, his KO's were coming out an aver of around only 5 per his 50 fights and he was being stopped around 14-15 times where as in real life he was stopped in a fight 11 times. Thus the couple little changes I made seemed to pull those numbers in closer. Hope you don't mind Mark my little bit of tweeking?!

Nah no problem from my end. These re-ratings are bound to happen as we add more and more of the fighters of this era and give us more fighters to test with.

Cheers,
Mark

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/17/67 Tuesday
Sacramento, CA, USA
Fred Lewis – HW (21-4-1) vs. Ray (Junior) Ellis – HW (2-3-0)

Fred Lewis - USA Rating 3
Heavyweight 1956-73
38 wins / 15 losses / 1 draw / 24 KO

Hometown: Colorado Springs, CO
Manager: Jim Malcolm

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Lewis' career had 2 distinct phases to it. From June 1956 thru December 1958 he fought mostly the usual array of local area club fighters and lower echelon journymen fighters to accumulate a 17-4-1,11KO record. His biggest fights in that time period were a 3rd round TKO loss to Al(Tiger) Williams(40-40-5,8) and then a 2nd round KO win over Hal Boylston(16-3-1) which ended up being Boylston's last fight. In September 1957 Lewis defeaed Larry Melton(1-5-0,1) for the Arizona State Light Heavyweight Title. Lewis fought and won one more fight in 1957 and then fought and won 5 out of 6 fights in 1958. But, after consecutive wins in November and December 1958 against Mexican HW Negro Lira in Nogales, Mexico, Lewis then hung the gloves up for about 7-1/2 years.

In August 1966, Lewis started a comeback in the world of heavyweight boxing winning the first of 4 straight KO victories in 1966. He then defeated Ray (Junior) Ellis in early 1967 by 7th round TKO and then won a 10 round decision over Bobby Stininato(41-19-2,17) in February. That set up a March 1967 meeting in Sacramento, CA against Henry Clark for the California State HW Title. The Scheduled 12 rounder went the full distance, but Lewis suffered his first defeat after 6 wins on his come back trail. Lewis never got a chance to fight for any other kind of title, but over those years from 1966 thru 1973 in this second life of his career he posted a 21-11-1,13KO record against a good number of fighters we've seen in the TBCB game. Those fights include wins over Charley Leslie, Hank Casey, Georgie Johnson, Charley Polite, Lou Bailey, Charlie Jordan, Charlie Reno and Eduardo Corletti. He lost fights against Roger Rischer, Bill McMurray, Leslie, Henry Clark again in 1972, Jack O'Halloran, and finally to Pat Duncan and John Conteh in 1973 to end his career for good.

Ray (Junior) Ellis - USA Rating 1
Heavyweight 1965-71
6 wins / 12 losses / 0 draws / 6 KO

Hometown: San Francisco, CA

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Ray's career started out against a top LHW of the era, Eddie Jones (36-15-3,14). Ellis KO'd Jones in the first round! His very next opponent a month later is non other then Jerry Quarry who is 5-0 in his very young career. This is a scheduled 6 round fight which Ellis manages to go the distance with Quarry but looses it in the end. After a 1st round KO of a guy named John Henry Jackson(8-12-2,5), Ellis meets Quarry in a rematch in late September 1965. Quarry beats Ellis again, this time though Jerry KO's Ellis in the 3rd round. Ellis fights one time in 1966 loosing a 10 round decision to Emil Umek from Germany then in January 1967 he meets Fred Lewis(38-15-1,24). Lewis is the victor by 7th round TKO.

After a 1st round KO of LHW George Gaston(6-4-0,3), Ellis' career goes pretty much south ending 3-8-0,3 in his last fights. He lost by 2nd round KO to Mac Foster in 1967. Ellis finishes his career with straight KO losses to Ken Norton, Ron Stander and Pat Duncan.

The Fight....
Fred Lewis started his career 10-1/2 years come this January day in 1967. In building his 21 victories up till now, it’s been the usual array of club fighters and low rank journeymen as his opponents. He lost by 3rd round TKO to Al (Tiger) Williams in 1956 and later that same year KO’d in the 2nd round Hal Boylston. He fought until November 1958 beating a Negro Lira for a second straight fight, and then Lewis strayed away from the ring for almost 8 years. He started a comeback in August 1966 with consecutive wins over George Thomas, Al Carter, Eddie Land and LHW-Fred Roots (27-23-6 career). Ray Ellis’ career is going through a stumbling start. Of his 3 losses though, 2 have been against Jerry Quarry who is just in the beginning stages of his career also. Ellis has fought only one time in all of 1966 since a 3rd round KO at the gloves of Quarry in September 1965. In March 1966 Ellis lost a 10 round decision to German Emil Umek, so Ellis is looking to this fight with the veteran Lewis to jump-start his sputtering career. Ellis’ hopes to get things rolling against Lewis ended in disappointment as the fight was stopped in the 7th round handing Lewis a TKO victory.
Our replay fight was quite exciting and looked to be as if Ellis was going to carry an upset. For the first 5 rounds of this scheduled 10 round affair, Ellis really took it to Lewis. Round one was all Ellis as he peppered Lewis with jabs and combinations to out point Fred 15-1. Round 2, Lewis finally mounted an offense and this was a tough round with both landing punches on equal terms. The points scored the judges cards scored all a tie in this round 10-10 each after all three judges gave round 1 to Ellis 10-9. Lewis came out quick in round 3 and landed a hard shot seconds into the round that made Ellis blink, but he didn’t take advantage and Ellis fought himself back into the round enough to edge him in that round. Round 4 was pretty even through the first 2-1/2 minutes with neither fighter able to land a whole lot when all of a sudden, Ellis throws a wild overhand right that catches Lewis flush and he drops to one knee where he stays taking an 8 count. Interestingly judges 2 and 3 give the round to Ellis 10-8 with the drop of Lewis, but judge one scores it only 10-9, Ellis. Round 5 after the brief, quick excitement toward the end of round 4, kind of lulls the crowd to sleep. Ellis again forces most of the action landing enough to convince judges 1 and 2 to give him the round 10-9. Judge three though sees it as another even round. So round 5 ends with Ellis in control of the fight. He’s ahead on all three judges cards, 50-46, 50-45, 50-46, and with Lewis showing no real signs of being able to come in and connect with any of his punches except for that 2nd round, this fight would look to be in control and won by Ellis. Well, this ringside observer sure was fooled! Round 6 started out again with Ellis taking it to Lewis landing a strong cross and a straight right stopping Lewis in his tracks. Ellis maneuvers into the right corner then the fighters circle around into the center of the ring……all of a sudden…BAM!!…Lewis lands a perfect uppercut that sends Ellis slumping to the canvas! Ellis takes a three count then manages to gather himself up, but, his legs look wobbly and Ellis is suddenly looking fatigued in this fight for the first time! After wrapping Ellis up for a few seconds, Lewis then connects with a solid hook and drops Ellis for a 2nd time in the round at the 1:52 mark! This time Ellis can’t make it up! A sudden, shocking finish to this fight…KO at the 2:01 mark in the 6th round for Fred Lewis over Ray (Junior) Ellis!!

I raised Byrds endurance rating to 10 from 9. Based on his last three fights, all won in the last 2 or 3 rounds, I think its deserverd.

I raised McClines punching power from a 5 to a 6.

Icetea, would you mind posting individually the changes you made to Donald and Holyfield if possible? I don't want to lose my fight records for Holyfield and Donald but I'd love to see your changes to put in myself. When I started my new heavyweight universe I started off the new era with a copy of the November 13th heavyweight PPV and Donald beat Holyfield so the changes would be appreciated for my own universe.

Ok, I'll do that later today.

Ingvardt Jorgensen

Ingvardt Jorgensen - Greenland Heavyweight that fought briefly out of Denmark. Went 7 and 2 against local stiffs. One of his opponents' claim to fame seems to be a loss to LH Wayne Llewelyn. That's about as good as it gets. Not much to hang a hat on, but heres Ingvardt.

Mario Oscar Melo

Mario Oscar Melo - Former South American Heavyweight title holder. Fought almost entirely in Argentina and did not fare too well away from the homeland (Ko'd by Moorer, TKO to Adilson Rodrigues) This was a card in the old board game that I had which did not appear to be in any available data bases.

I have not been able to find a picture of Melo.

George Rooke

George Rooke - Bare knuckles boxer that poked his head into the new era. He fought Patsy Cardiff and John L. (apparently, Sullivan beat the snot out of him - knocking him down seven times in two rounds) I did not rate him, but picked the rating up somewhere along the line with the old board game.
