Syracuse Sycamores (83-52 .615 4 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (69-65 .515 4.5 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division) SYR: Frank Cane (27-R) (9-4 2.20 ERA 122.2 IP, 104 H, 5 HR, 26 BB, 94 SO) vs. JAX: Del Warwick (28-L) (11-11 2.65 ERA 197 IP, 192 H, 13 HR, 52 BB, 107 SO) Gold Glove Cane is injury prone, but awesome when healthy. He is 21-14 with a 2.80 career ERA. He is 8-1 in his last 14 starts. The loss was his last start and he only allowed 1 hit in 7 innings with no walks, but the hit was a home run and the Sycamores were shut out. They have not scored a run in his last 2 starts. We faced him in Syracuse in June and scored 5 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts in 5.2 innings in a no decision that we won. It was the only start for Cane all season that he allowed more than 3 runs. Warwick gave up 2 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts in 7.2 innings last time out in a no decision that we won in 13 innings. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) SYRACUSE 1: CF Jim Beard (25-R .264-485-2-25-.629-33 A+) 2: LF Jeff Garrigus (34-R .241-415-15-53-.712-8 A) All-Star 3: SS Frank Bates (31-R .252-496-26-73-.788-17 B) Silver Slugger/All-Star(3: 01-03) 4: RF Dave Bess (27-R .254-394-8-57-.702-4 B+) 5: C Lee Dean (30-L .228-381-4-37-.671-0 C) Silver Slugger(2: 01-02)/All-Star(2: 02-03) 6: 1B Dick Rothwell (26-R .240-217-3-26-.632-4 B+) 7: 3B Octavio Garcia (27-S .240-367-12-51-.721-5 B+) 8: 2B Bill Crystal (29-S .207-217-7-17-.614-16 B+) 9: P Frank Cane (27-R .143-42-1-6-.377-0 B) 3 career HR Jeff Garrigus is 2 for 17 lifetime against Del Warwick. I will wager that he gets two more hits today... I would also put money on Frank Bates hitting a home run to today. JACKSONVILLE 1: LF Cal Doty (26-L .287-487-3-48-.725-30 B+) 2: CF Danny Stewart (32-L .234-316-1-19-.593-8 C+) 3: 1B Jack Washburn (21-L .253-372-9-37-.730-25 B) 4: RF Ray McDonald (23-L .302-496-11-68-.828-17 B+) 5: 3B Ed Diskin (39-R .251-287-5-51-.668-1 C) 6: C Bert Swope (31-S .211-223-0-23-.555-1 B) 7: SS Bart Daw (31-R .246-399-9-54-.669-38 B+) 8: 2B Junior Danielson (32-R .272-162-0-7-.619-12 B) 9: P Del Warwick (28-L .175-57-0-3-.348-0 C) Gold Glove Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 90 F, Clear Skies, with a 7 MPH wind blowing left to right Attendance: 9,303 Top of the First: Jim Beard swings at the first pitch and beats out an infield hit... Jeff Garrigus pops out to right. I would not mind losing my wager... Frank Bates flies out to deep center. Dave Bess flies out to deep left! Bottom of the First: Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and doubles down the left field line! Danny Stewart strikes out looking.... I hope we can get a better center fielder this Winter... Doty steals 3rd! Jack Washburn swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... Ray McDonald draws a walk. Ed Diskin swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left and Doty scores! McDonald heads to 3rd and Jeff Garrigus throws the ball into the dugout for an error and McDonald scores! 2 to 0, Jays! Diskin has a knack for knocking in runs! He is only a .250 hitter, but is hitting .326 with runners in scoring position! Bert Swope swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. Top of the Third: Bill Crystal, the ex-Jay, hits a home run to left. 2 to 1, Jays. Top of the Fourth: Frank Bates triples to right... Dave Bess grounds a hit to left and Bates scores... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Lee Dean grounds a hit up the middle and Bess beats the throw to 3rd... Dick Rothwell grounds one back to the box. P Del Warwick snags it, looks Bess back to 3rd and fires to 2nd, to start a 1-6-3 double play!! Octavio Garcia pops out to short! Top of the Fifth: Bill Crystal doubles high off the wall in right center... P Frank Cane bunts him to 3rd. Jim Beard pops out to 2nd. Jeff Garrigus up and I smell something rotten, but he strikes out! Bottom of the Fifth: With 2 outs, P Del Warwick grounds a hit to left, P Frank Cane is hurt. New Pitcher: John Boston (35-L), who is 3-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 52.1 IP with 1 start. Cal Doty grounds out to 2nd. Bottom of the Sixth: I do not want to pinch-hit for my lefties because all the rest of their rested relievers are right-handers. So Danny Stewart is allowed to bat and he walks on 4 pitches and then steals 2nd! With 1 out, they walk Ray McDonald intentionally to face Ed Diskin, who does not mind grounding into double plays... He does not this time, however, though he pops out to right... We will pinch-hit for Bert Swope, here, though. PH Marty Eades (32-R) strikes out.... Bert could have done that.... Eades will stay in to play 3rd and Don Kern will come in to catch. Top of the Ninth: On the Hill: Hal Bradford (27-L), after a scoreless 8th. The Bullpen is ready, though no one else is fresh. We have been outhit, 13 to 5. 7-8-9 up for them. PH Don Czachor (32-L), the .340 lifetime hitter, who is 0 for 2 this series, lines out to 1st. Bill Crystal, who has a double and a home run this game, doubles to left... PH John Byers (20-R), a rookie who was the #12 prospect this Spring and is batting .179 with 4 RBI in 28 AB, is sent up. Call to the Bullpen: Robbie Hopley (29-R). Crystal steals 3rd.... Byers lines a 1-2 pitch to left for a hit and Crystal scores... 3 to 2, Sycamores. Byers steals 2nd... Jim Beard swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to center. Jeff Garrigus grounds out to 2nd. Well, I lost my wager, as he is 0 fir 5 today, but I have also lost the game, which is not fair.... I should at least win something! Frank Bates did not hit a home run either, so I am 0 for 3.... Bottom of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Benny Martineau (32-L), their All-Star(02) and Fireman Trophy wining closer, trying for his third Save in 4 days.... 32 SV and only 2 Blown all season.... 4-5-6 up for us. Ray McDonald strikes out... Don Kern swings at the first pitch and ground out to 1st, unassisted.... Marty Eades lines a hit to left. Bart Daw takes three straight strikes.... Lost - 3 to 2 We finish the season series with Syracuse 3-5. We were 4-4 last year and 0-8 in 2001. We had 6 hits and made no errors Syracuse had 15 hits and made 1 error Del Warwick went 7 innings, allowed 11 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit. RP Johnny Groom (25-R) was booted off the roster. P Al Calice (22-R), our #1 pick in this year's B League Draft was called up. We'll see if he can get anyone out as a reliever. The Birmingham Barons are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 3 of 4 games in Rochester, the last two in extra innings, so hopefully they have no Bullpen against us. C Bert Swope (31-S) was placed on the DL and C Ron Gregory (32-L) was called up from Daytona (A). Gregory hit .193 in 114 AB for New Orleans in 2001. We got him in a trade for RP Gary Adamson, who is now retired. Over the past 2 seasons, Gregory has hit .252 with 5 HR and 53 RBI in 457 AB for the Tortugas with 66 BB and 5 SB. Gregory swings from the left side, too, and will fit into Bert Swope's role of starting against right-handers who are a lot tougher on righties than lefties. He may even hit better than Bert, but he won't play the same level of defense. He is not a horrible catcher, but not so great one either. He is very self-centered and dumb as a rock..... His scouting notes say that he probably kisses himself in the mirror a lot.... Garrett Bender (29-R) hit .228 for Daytona (A) after getting sent down this year, so his bat is not tempting us to put up with his errors again... Birmingham Barons (69-73 .486 9.5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (71-69 .507 6.5 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division) BIRM: Marty Forner (30-L) (10-6 3.51 ERA 138.1 IP, 134 H, 20 HR, 34 BB, 66 SO) Rookie JAX: John Lombardi (29-R) (0-4 5.49 ERA 39.1 IP, 49 H, 5 HR, 14 BB, 17 SO) Forner is a 30 old rookie, which means he stinks. But he is a lefty, which means he beats us.... We have never faced him. He is pitching with a mild abdominal strain today. Lombardi last started for the Jays on June 26 and he was hammered. He pitched a CG win in his last start for Daytona (A), allowing 2 runs on 9 his and 5 walks with 5 strikeouts. We are in New Orleans to play the Pelicans a 4 game series. They won 2 of 3 here versus Richmond over the weekend. They have the worst record in the MLB, but are almost at .500 since the All-Star break (27-28). We are 6-4 against them on the season and lost 2 of 3 the first time we visited, August 29-31. They are last in scoring with 3.50 runs per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 3.89). The Pelicans are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.51 per game (Jacksonville is #6 with 3.87). Their run differential is -144, now the 2nd worst in the MLB (Indianapolis), and ours is +4. Jacksonville Jays (71-71 .500 7.5 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) at New Orleans Pelicans (55-87 .387 23.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division) JAX: Mike Marsh (22-R) (1-3 5.91 ERA 32 IP, 29 H, 5 HR, 23 BB, 8 SO) Rookie NO: Dan Krueger (25-R) (1-1 2.41 ERA 18.2 IP, 18 H, 2 HR, 7 BB, 7 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) Marsh gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 6 walks with 1 strikeout in 5.1 innings last time out in a loss. Another bad outing and we will put him on the shelf until next year. Krueger was the #2 pick in the 2002 B Leagues Draft, the draft where we took Jim Baucom #1. We faced him in August, in his first start of the season, and only scored 2 unearned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 6.2 innings in a no decision that we lost. Dennis Brown, 0 for 12 against Farmer, hits a home run to right! 1 to 0, Jays! Ed Diskin strikes out... Ray McDonald grounds out to 2nd. Bottom of the First: Franklin Sanchez beats out an infield hit... Ray Teague hits a home run to left... 2 to 1, Pelicans. His second home run of the season... Jay Kegler doubles to left center.... Why can all the other teams in the League keep the Pelicans from scoring much, but not us? Tim Dawson grounds out to 2nd and Kegler goes to 3rd. Chuck Corrigan pops out to right and Kegler stays put. Niel Williams grounds out to short. Top of the Sixth: Danny Stewart lines our third hit of the game to left center and P Del Warwick bunts him to 2nd. Junior Danielson lines a hit to right center and Stewart heads home, but Franklin Sanchez throws him out.... Top of the Seventh: Ed Diskin grounds a hit up the middle. That does it for P Dennis Farmer. New Pitcher: Keith Casebolt (25-L), their closer, who is 5-4 with 11 SV and 3.41 ERA in 75 IP. Ray McDonald grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. PH Dave Thompson (27-R), who will stay in to play 1st, grounds a double over the 3rd base bag and McDonald heads home, but Ricky Palmer throws him out.... Back to back innings with a runner thrown out at home... Don Kern grounds one to 1st, but P Keith Casebolt drops the toss for an error. But then he picks Kern off..... Top of the Ninth: Top of our order up. Marty Eades has already been used as a pinch-hitter... Junior Danielson grounds a hit to left! Dennis Brown has to bat, because there are no right-handers left on the bench and he strikes out on a 3-2 pitch... Ed Diskin grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.... Lost - 2 to 1 We had 7 hits and made no errors New Orleans had 7 hits and made 1 error Del Warwick (L 12-12) went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, no walks, 1 HBP and struck out 5. LHP Bill Grant went 1 scoreless inning, allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. Dennis Farmer (W 9-5) went 6+ innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 2. LHP Keith Casebolt (SV 12) went 3 scoreless innings, gave us 2 hits and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit. Both pitchers used today by the Pelicans walks about 4.5 per 9 innings, but we did not draw a walk.... 2B Junior Danielson had 2 hits and stole a base, but why he did not try to steal in the 9th inning is a mystery. RF Dennis Brown hit his 7th home run of the season. PH/1B Dave Thompson hit a double. Last edited by Questdog; 10-23-2020 at 10:06 AM. |

Man, do the Jax Jays need offense...
I guess I'll send in my workout video. I'm a beer league first baseman, lazy loudmouth, and I steal from teammates' lunchboxes. But my workout will convince you - wait till you see me lift two kegs o' brew.

Jay Kegler swings at the first pitch and flies out to right. Chuck Corrigan swings at the first pitch and grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!! Top of the Second: Marty Eades grounds a hit to right. With 1 out, Ron Gregory grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. Bart Daw lines a hit to left. Junior Danielson lines a hit to center and Gregory heads home, but gets thrown out by Ricky Palmer.... We are getting more runners thrown out at home than are scoring.... Bottom of the Second: With 1 out, Ricky Palmer takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Bottom of the Ninth: New Pitcher: Dave Nini (26-L). 7-8-9 up for the Pelicans, but that is where all their damage has been done today. Ricky Palmer swings at the first pitch and pops one up to 1st, but Dave Thompson drops the ball.... Bobby Thomas grounds out slowly to short and Palmer goes to 2nd. PH Franklin Sanchez (22-R), who is 7 for 13 with a walk and an RBI and 5 runs scores this series, is walked intentionally.... Dumb, when your pitcher is a wild thrower and is not inclined to induce ground balls and the on deck batter is a fast runner... Ron Taylor grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, but Junior Danielson gets taken out by Sanchez with a rough slide.... Trudy goes out, but pronounces Danielson fit to continue. But the next three make outs! Bottom of the Fifth: Bart Daw grounds a hit up the middle and goes to 2nd on a ground out. So we have a runner at 2nd with 1 out. Then we get two straight singles! But no runs, because Daw had been caught stealing 3rd.... Bottom of the Seventh: New Pitcher: Mike Penafiel (32-R), who is 4-1 with 5 SV and a 3.21 ERA in 70 IP. With 1 out, Bart Daw grounds one to 3rd, but Tom Morris (29-R) makes a bad throw for an error! Danny Stewart lines a hit to center and Daw gets caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd, but somehow manages to make it to 3rd safe! PH Mike Volkman (35-L) flies out to deep center and Daw tags up, but gets thrown out at home by Harold Evans, who is now in center.... Top of the Ninth: On the Hill: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (33-L) after a perfect 8th. 6-7-8 up for the Hornets. Tom Morris strikes out! Marty Derringer grounds out to short. PH Jim Sabin (35-R), batting .231 with 5 RBI in 39 AB, lines a hit to left and Evans beats the throw to 3rd... The Bullpen gets up. Larry Davis, the .350 hitter, grounds out to short! Bottom of the Tenth: 9-1-2 up for us. PH Dennis Brown (29-L) beats out an infield hit! Junior Danielson bunts him to 2nd. A wild pitch sends Brown to 3rd! Cal Doty takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Fan Appreciation Day! The final home game of the year. P Dale Gilchrist (25-R) was activated from the DL and P John Lombardi (29-R) was sent to the Daytona (A) roster, but asked to hang around with the team, just in case he is needed. Charlotte Hornets (81-67 .547 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (73-75 .493 8 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) CHAR: Frank Lytle (29-R) (0-3 5.02 ERA 52 IP, 53 H, 8 HR, 30 BB, 47 SO) JAX: Dale Gilchrist (25-R) (9-8 2.39 ERA 143 IP, 111 H, 7 HR, 50 BB, 74 SO) Lytle was 2-9 with a 4.44 ERA in 16 starts and 95.1 IP last year. He is 1-1 in 2 starts in his career against the Jays with a 3.38 ERA. 10.2 IP, 6 H, 1 HR, 9 BB, 10 SO. We have only faced him in relief this season and scored 2 runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts in 2 innings. Gilchrist last started on September 5 and went 3 scoreless innings before getting hurt. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) CHARLOTTE 1: LF Harold Evans (24-R .272-357-0-27-.676-13 A) 2: 2B Bruce McArthur (26-L .257-455-8-43-.699-0 A) Gold Glove(1B) 3: 3B Larry Davis (28-S .350-554-4-74-.845-15 B) Silver Slugger(01)/All-Star(01) 4: RF Terry Graham (24-L .227-172-4-22-.642-0 A) 5: 1B Tom Barker (31-L .252-159-8-32-.809-1 C) 6: SS Marty Derringer (25-R .255-428-6-52-.671-15 B+) 7: C Larry Griffin (31-S .257-261-7-38-.724-1 C+) All-Star(02) 8: CF Gabe Valdez (31-R .233-450-8-48-.610-0 B) 9: P Frank Lytle (29-L .167-12-0-1-.333-0 F) JACKSONVILLE 1: 2B Junior Danielson (32-R .282-213-0-9-.632-15 B) 2: LF Cal Doty (26-L .289-532-4-51-.731-36 B+) 3: RF Ray McDonald (23-L .298-541-11-72-.817-18 B+) 4: 3B Marty Eades (32-R .283-520-20-89-.811-2 C) All-Star 5: 1B Jack Washburn (21-L .246-406-10-42-.720-27 B) 6: C Don Kern (26-R .197-218-8-30-.614-10 B) Rookie 7: SS Bart Daw (31-R .243-444-9-57-.653-39 B+) 8: CF Danny Stewart (32-L .229-345-1-19-.579-9 C+) 9: P Dale Gilchrist (25-R .231-52-0-5-.491-0 C+) Game Start: 2:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 76 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 7 MPH wind blowing out to center Attendance: 6,744 We finish the season with 583,406 in paid attendance. Up form 530,869 last year and 489,729 in 2001. We have outdrawn only New Orleans. They have 7 more home dates left to catch us, but that does not seem likely. Marty Eades grounds out to 3rd, leaving yet another RBI on the bases. Our offensive woes are mostly caused by him not hitting with runners in scoring position and Ray McDonald not hitting at any time.... And also by our base runners getting thrown out all the time and not stealing when it is called for and trying to steal when it is not.... Bottom of the Third: Danny Stewart takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and P Dale Gilchrist bunts him to 2nd. With 2 outs, Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and grounds our first hit of the game up the middle and Stewart scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Do you remember what an RBI was? He does not... He pops one up to shallow left, but Harold Evans muffs it and the bases are loaded with 1 out! Jack Washburn swings at the first pitch and pops out to right and the runners hold... Don Kern grounds out to short.... Top of the Ninth; New Pitcher: Roger Wallace (28-R). PH John Hartz (38-R), the 2-time All-Star(01-02), who is 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI this series, lines a hit to left... PH Danny Pakan (27-L), the .429 hitter, who is 1 for 1 this series, swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to right center and Hartz scores... Tie Game: 2 to 2. Harold Evans flies out to center. Bottom of the Ninth; New Pitcher: Miguel Tejeda (25-R), their closer, who took the loss in extra innings yesterday by giving us a run in 1.2 innings. 7-8-9 up for us. Bart Daw takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. He steals 2nd! Danny Stewart grounds a hit up the middle and Daw heads home and THIS time he is thrown out by Terry Graham, who is hurt.... But they walk him intentionally. Junior Danielson grounds a hit to left and Stewart heads home and he is SAFE and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!! We are in Memphis to play a short 2 game set. The Mules won 2 of 3 in Richmond over the weekend. We are 6-6 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time we visited, May 5-6. They are 6th in scoring with 4.07 runs per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.86). The Mules are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.01 per game (Jacksonville is #6 with 3.86). Their run differential is +8 and ours is 0. Jacksonville Jays (74-75 .497 8.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Memphis Mules (74-76 .493 9 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) JAX: Del Warwick (28-L) (12-12 2.63 ERA 219 IP, 213 H, 17 HR, 54 BB, 123 SO) Gold Glove MEM: Dave Gray (34-R) (8-14 4.08 ERA 194.1 IP, 175 H, 9 HR, 68 BB, 97 SO) Warwick gave up 2 runs on 5 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a loss. With Rick Potts in the DL, Gray is their #1 starter. We beat him in April, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 8 innings. Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) JACKSONVILLE 1: LF Cal Doty (26-L .292-535-4-53-.737-37 B+) 2: CF Danny Stewart (32-L .230-348-1-19-.581-9 C+) 3: RF Ray McDonald (23-L .296-544-11-72-.813-18 B+) 4: 3B Marty Eades (32-R .281-524-20-89-.805-2 C) All-Star 5: 1B Jack Washburn (21-L .246-410-10-42-.718-29 B) 6: C Ron Gregory (32-L .111-9-0-2-.222-0 C+) 7: SS Bart Daw (31-R .244-446-9-57-.658-40 B+) 8: 2B Junior Danielson (32-R .280-218-0-10-.626-15 B) 9: P Del Warwick (28-L .175-63-0-3-.346-0 C) Gold Glove MEMPHIS 1: SS Tony Weninger (22-R .190-116-0-5-.470-2 B+) Rookie #17 prospect 2: 3B Keith Meyer (28-L .361-571-22-82-.978-29-C+) MVP(01)/Silver Slugger(2: 01(2B),02(3B)/All-Star(3: 01-02) 3: 2B Leo Toruno (29-L .225-493-16-70-.706-14 B) Silver Slugger(2: 01(SS),02(2B)/All-Star(2; 01-02) 4: 1B Nestor Gonzalez (29-L .257-549-28-99-.781-1 A) Silver Slugger(01)/All-Star(3: 01-03) 5: C Roger Beaudin (31-R .265-452-11-54-.740-6 D+) All-Star 6: RF Ron Alario (33-R .283-371-4-46-.711-6 A+) Gold Glove 7: CF Steve Gress (32-L .222-573-5-36-.603-25 B) All-Star(01) 8: LF Fred Heff (22-R .211-209-1-15-.578-4 B) 9: P Dave Gray (34-R .095-63-1-2-.268-0 D) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: RFK Stadium Weather: 80 F, Clear Skies, with a 10 MPH wind blowing out to right Attendance: 8,049 Top of the First: Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and drives one to deep right, but Ron Alario makes a running catch... Danny Stewart lines out to center. Ray McDonald strikes out looking.... What has happened to Ray? He has not hit much in a month and is 0 for his last 7 with 4 strikeouts.... Bottom of the First: Tony Weninger takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4.... No surprise that we do not get the sub-.200 hitter out... Keith Meyer, the .360 hitter, lines a 3-2 pitch to center, but Danny Stewart makes a sliding catch! Leo Toruno lines one to center and Danny Stewart makes a diving catch! Nestor Gonzalez lines one to center and Stewart makes another diving catch!!! Three great catches in a row!!! Top of the Second: Marty Eades doubles to right center. Jack Washburn lines a hit to right center and Eades beats the throw home! 1 to 0, Jays! Washburn tries to steal, but they have a pitchout on and he is out and tagged hard and hurt... Trudy goes out and comes back to the dugout with him, but says he can keep playing! Bottom of the Second: With 1 out, Ron Alario grounds a hit to left. With 2 outs, Fred Heff grounds a hit to left. P Dave Gray lines a hit to center and Alario scores... Tie Game: 1 to 1. P Gray is a career .089 hitter who has struck out in more than half of his at bats.... Top of the Third: Junior Danielson grounds a hit to left and P Del Warwick bunts him to 2nd. Cal Doty grounds one to 1st, but Nestor Gonzalez boots it! Only his 6th error of the season! Danny Stewart pops out to 3rd... Ray McDonald clears the bases with a double to right center!! 3 to 1, Jays! Marty Eades, with a runner in scoring position, grounds a hit up the middle! He tries to steal, but Ron Gregory throws him out! Fred Heff pops out to left! Top of the Fifth: Junior Danielson swings at the first pitch and pokes a hit over the 2nd baseman and P Del Warwick bunts him to 2nd. With 2 outs, Danny Stewart lines a hit to center and Danielson scores and Stewart takes 2nd on the throw home! 4 to 1, Jays! Ray McDonald grounds a hit to right and Stewart scores! 5 to 1, Jays! Bottom of the Fifth: With 1 out, Tony Weninger, the sub-.200 hitter, draws a walk on 4 pitches, his second free pass of the game. Keith Meyer grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. Leo Toruno hits a home run to left... 5 to 3, Jays. Top of the Sixth: On the Hill: Al Moser (36-R), after getting the final out of the 5th. Ron Gregory doubles to center! They walk Bart Daw intentionally. With 1 out, P Del Warwick bunts into a 1-5-3 double play.... Top of the Seventh: New Pitcher: Jim Lucas (24-R), their rookie closer, who is 6-6 with 4 SV and a 5.09 ERA in 53 IP with 1 start. The Mules have about a baker's dozen closers on the DL. Actually, I think it is 3, but that is from memory. It might be two, because I see one of their closers is on the roster now, but demoted from the role. Cal Doty triples to right center! Danny Stewart strikes out on 3 pitches... The walk Ray McDonald intentionally. Marty Eades swings at a 3-2 pitch and tries to ground a double over the 3rd base bag, but Keith Meyer makes a diving stop and throws him out.... McDonald goes to 2nd. Jack Washburn grounds out to 2nd.................. Bottom of the Eighth: New Pitcher: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (33-L). Don Kern (26-R) stays in to catch. Fred Heff grounds out to the pitcher. PH Dave Stacy (28-R), batting .262 with 2 HR and 5 RBI in 42 AB, grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Tony Weninger, the sub-.200 hitting rookie, draws his third walk of the game.... Now we have to face a former MVP and current MVP candidate in Keith Meyer.... He is 8 for 13 (.615) with a HR versus Grant in his career..... He is 0 for 4 against Dave Nini, who is warm in the Pen, but I am too chicken to make that move.... So P Grant does the sensible thing and beans Meyer! Leo Toruno, who is 1 for 8 against P Grant, pokes one over the shortstop, but Bart Daw manages to run it down and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays! Won - 5 to 4 We had 10 hits and made no errors Memphis had 7 hits and made 2 errors Del Warwick (W 13-12) went 7 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 5 walks and struck out 2. 110 pitches. I home this means his slump is over! 3B Marty Eades had 2 hits with a double and scored a run, but no RBI again.
