Jim Landis ex White Sox passes away at the age of 83 RIP

One of the best defensive center fielders of his era, Jim broke into the major leagues in 1957 and spent his first eight years with the Sox. He also played single seasons with Kansas City, Cleveland, Houston, Detroit and Boston, batting a career .247 with 93 home runs, 467 RBI and 139 stolen bases in 1,346 games.

Landis helped the '59 White Sox win the American League pennant, slashing .272/.370/.379 with 26 doubles, 7 triples, 5 homers, 60 RBI and 20 steals while finishing seventh in MVP voting.

In 1960, Landis won the first of five Gold Gloves. He also played in the 1962 All-Star Game. The first and the last photos are customs I made. The middle two came from ebay listings years ago

1977-era Dick Ruthven from the vault

This Dick Ruthven photo in the one-year-only Braves home pinstripes of 1977 turned up in the Vault recently, but as dark as you see here. But a pro photo doctor I know got ahold of it and produced the 100 percent better image below. Maybe basement photoshoppers can do the same, but it pays to have a pro on speed dial.

Dock Lock former Red Sox Senator and Phillie passed away RIP

In his playing days, Lock was a 6-foot-2, 195-pound center fielder. He finished sixth in the American League with 27 home runs in 1963, then followed it up with 28 home runs the next season. He led the American League in outfield assists and putouts in 1963, as well. Lock played for the Senators, Phillies and Red Sox in his eight-year career.

Jack Lamabe: Somewhere Out There

Only recently did the mighty Merkle come through with a game-action image of Jack Lamabe with the Cardinals (23 games in late 1967 plus three in the Cardinals' winning World Series effort). It was in an online replay of that Series (The Ultimate Game on Golden Baseball Magazine site) did a portrait head shot of Lamabe show up.

Kept looking and found a deeper crop on the Cardinals Diamond Diaries site:

Hawes Corrections

Roy Hawes never played for the Tigers; only MLB action was three games for the Senators.
There is no Baseball Hall of Fame in Chattanooga. Hawes was inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.

I thought that "Jungle Jim" referred to Jim Rivera, not Jim Landis.

The latest additions to Wikipedia's list of the 100 oldest living baseball players include: 99. Bobby "Mickey" Micelotta and 100. "The chairman of The board", Hall Of Famer, Whitey Ford, both just shy of their 89th birthdays..

Your 'Fake news' is more reliable than the 'Fake News' of our president.

P.S. The latest addition to the supplemental list of Wikipedia's Oldest Living Major Leaguers is Carl Linhart at #125. (3 career games for the 1952 Detroit Tigers) He is one of the few major leaguers to have been born in Czechoslovakia (the present day, Czech Republic).
