Been away for a little while, but glad to be back with a goodie.
This man, a scholar and a gentleman, replaced Enos Slaughter in the outfield in 1954. Not such a hot fielder, really, but he put on quite a show for a rookie, beating out Ernie Banks and Henry Aaron for Rookie of the Year. He slashed .304/.371/.435. He had a good few years for some very mediocre St. Louis teams before being traded to the Dodgers for the '59 season. Not expected to contribute much in '59, he was the cornerstone of the Dodger offense down the stretch, the playoffs, and the World Series - helping the Boys in Blue win their first crown in LA. Great article (LINK) on the SABR website. #9, Wally Moon

Just remembered that I already had a short one for #9 prepared before I did my Moon post.

1969 NY Mets Backup/platoon catcher JC Martin, famous for that World Series bunt. Throw hit him in the back bringing in the winning run

Welcome back. And way to do it in style, too. Wally Moon was definitely a scholar and a gentleman....and sported one of the fiercest looking unibrows this side of human evolution chart.

Thank DeJesus, Ivan that the age of free agency started when it did. You can only imagine how much more fearsome that O's team of the late-70's and early-80's would have been with Reggie in the same lineup with Murray, Singleton, DeCinces and, eventually Cal Ripken Jr. With the wealth of starting pitching they had, the regular season would've been nothing more than a grotesque formality.

Cubs fans look away! He was a solid defender throughout his career, but maybe you haven't forgiven him yet for his contributions to the Bartman game. Y'all can forgive him now that you have the big prize can't you? Can't you? Before he came to you, he was with us for eight OK seasons at SS (pickins are a bit slim with this number in Blue Jays history methinks folks

This inner circle HoFer is definitely in the rarified air of Hornsby, Collins and Lajoie. I would put him behind them all, but he was one helluva player. He probably wouldn't put himself behind them all, but that's OK, I do. I always found it hilarious how vehemently anti-Moneyball he was considering that at the time Moneyball was written OBP was the market inefficiency and he was tremendous at getting on base throughout his phenomenal career. That market inefficiency has changed often since the book was written. I think the next inefficiency will be contact hitters due to the rash of strikeouts that we see in today's game. He had speed, power, and he could hit. He could flat out do it all. "Little Joe". Joe Morgan #8

This guy was part of one of the better outfields you'll see in the history of the game, alongside Roberto Clemente and Al Oliver, and was integral in the 70s Pirates team that, along with the same-time period Steelers, contributed to the Pittsburgh sports boom in the decade. 1979 was his most prolific year, as he won NL MVP, NLCS MVP, and WS MVP honors. What!! The Hall of Famer #8 Willie Stargell.
