Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1937 in the National League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Cliff Melton (Philadelphia Phillies) Catcher: Bill DeLancey (Cincinnati Reds) First Baseman: Zeke Bonura (Philadelphia Phillies) Second Baseman: Charlie Gehringer (Brooklyn Dodgers) Third Baseman: Bill Brubaker (St. Louis Cardinals) Shortstop: Frankie Crosetti (Cincinnati Reds) Left Fielder: Mel Almada (Cincinnati Reds) Center Fielder: Joe DiMaggio (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: Ival Goodman (Boston Bees) 1937 Best Gloves Picked by AL Monday, October 25th, 1937 "Ball hawk" is a good name for the members of the defensive elite, the players who make leather shine. The fielders who crashed the wall, leaped in the air, and dived in the hole better than any others during 1937 have been tabbed as the American League's Glove Wizard Award winners. Here are this year's best: Pitcher: Lou Fette (Cleveland Indians) Catcher: Harry Danning (Cleveland Indians) First Baseman: Bill Terry (Philadelphia Athletics) Second Baseman: Tony Cuccinello (Washington Senators) Third Baseman: Ken Keltner (Washington Senators) Shortstop: Dick Bartell (Cleveland Indians) Left Fielder: Gene Moore (Chicago White Sox) Center Fielder: Terry Moore (Boston Red Sox) Right Fielder: Tommy Henrich (Boston Red Sox) NL's Top Rookie Named Tuesday, October 26th, 1937 All the votes are in for the National League Newcomer of the Year Award. He fashioned a .344 batting average, piling up 209 hits in 607 at-bats, 25 home runs, 66 walks, 110 RBIs and a .408 OBP. Henrich Best Rookie in 1937 Tuesday, October 26th, 1937 Tommy Henrich of the Red Sox had a good year during 1937. In his debut season the Boston right fielder hit .328 on his way to the Newcomer of the Year Award. Henrich collected 196 hits with 29 home runs, 124 RBIs and 111 runs scored. NL Best Mound Performer Named Thursday, October 28th, 1937 The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1937 has been presented and the National League winner is Lefty Gomez of Brooklyn. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Gomez. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Dodgers star told reporters. Gomez excelled with an impressive 22-8 record in 38 starts. In 323.1 innings he yielded 305 hits and 134 walks, while striking out 199 and compiling a fine 2.56 ERA. Chicago Star, Outstanding Pitcher Award Winner Thursday, October 28th, 1937 He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Denny Galehouse performed like a veteran on the hill for the Chicago White Sox and walked away with the American League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process. The 25-year-old White Sox star fashioned a 19-10 won-loss record in 1937 with a 2.83 ERA. In 280 innings of work and 39 starts, Galehouse struck out 127 while giving up 280 hits and 106 walks. He held opposing batters to a .259 average. Ott Batter Of The Year In NL Friday, October 29th, 1937 It's been a year of triumph for veteran Mel Ott of the Brooklyn Dodgers as he hit his way to the 1937 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 28-year-old veteran compiled a .334 average and .416 on-base percentage by putting together 201 hits, 26 doubles, 9 triples, 36 home runs and 81 walks. He also scored 115 times and drove in 134 runs. Medwick Rewarded with 1937 AL Outstanding Hitter Award Friday, October 29th, 1937 What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1937 Outstanding Hitter Award in the American League. It had already been a very special season for New York's Joe Medwick, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake. All season long Joe Medwick gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .357 as he collected 219 hits, 47 doubles, 12 triples, 28 home runs and 116 RBIs. Senators Moves Done Deal: Fieber for Cascarella Monday, October 25th, 1937 BNN is reporting a rumored trade between the Washington Senators and Boston Red Sox has been finalized. The deal, which is expected to be announced sometime during the next few hours, will reportedly send 24-year-old closer Clarence Fieber to Boston in return for 30-year-old minor league starting pitcher Joe Cascarella. The clubs were noncommittal on the trade, but did not deny it. During his career Cascarella has compiled a 5-7 record with a 5.53 ERA in 19 starts.

Mize Hits .348 to Earn NL Crown Monday, October 3rd, 1938 The 1938 baseball season has come to a close. And what a year it has been for Chicago's Johnny Mize. He finished off an all-star caliber year with the National League batting title. He topped all comers with a .348 batting average and registered 32 home runs and 112 RBIs in 151 games. AL Batting Title Belongs to Alexander Monday, October 3rd, 1938 One of the more prestigious postseason awards is presented to the league batting champion. The American League recipient this year is Chicago's 35-year-old first baseman Dale Alexander, who hit .353 over 139 games. Included in this accomplishment were 176 hits in 499 at-bats, 10 home runs, 71 RBI and 99 runs scored. Alexander spoke humbly to reporters about the award. "It's such a difficult thing to do," he explained, "There are a lot of great hitters in this league and to outhit them all is very special." NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Monday, September 12th, 1938 The deadline has passed for players to declare for the first-year player draft. North American BaseBall League officials have released a list to all teams with players who can be chosen on draft day. Teams now have a chance to scout the draft pool for 30 days before the draft is held. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Johnny Hopp, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 2. Barney McCosky, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 3. Marv Breuer, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Fred Hutchinson, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 5. Bill Posedel, 32 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Jack Kramer, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Dizzy Trout, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. Les Fleming, 23 year-old right fielder out of college. 9. Junior Thompson, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Ted Williams, 20 year-old right fielder out of college. NABL News: Regular Season ends Monday, October 3rd, 1938 Happy days are here for the playoff-bound teams. The North American BaseBall League regular season is over and the playoffs will soon get under way to determine the league's best team for 1938. The clubs are planning their lineups and pitching rotations, going over scouting reports, trying to glean bits of information that might give them the edge. Nothing is seemingly left to chance. It takes a lot of talent and sometimes a little luck to bring home the North American Series trophy.

1938 Playoffs
NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 3rd, 1938 Playoff baseball is a being unto itself. It is a mythical creature, a fleeting, mystical force that consumes anyone with a passion for one of the ballclubs vying for championship gold. It sweeps over you, pins you to your seat or kicks you forcibly to your feet in the flash of an instant. Today, the North American BaseBall League gives way to this passion as players, fans and the elite clubs of the league embark on an exciting journey fraught with anguish and ecstasy. Here is the slate for today's games in the North American Series: Philadelphia Phillies versus Boston Red Sox. In the elimination game today at Fenway Park II, the Phillies polished off Boston 5-1 to win the North American BaseBall League championship. It is the consensus among the baseball journalists and experts that these guys will go in the first ten picks: 1. Joe Gordon, 23 year-old second baseman out of college. 2. 1938 Hall of Fame Inductions
Hall of Fame Inducts Donlin Thursday, December 1st, 1938 A huge crowd watched Mike Donlin become the newest member of the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame today. "I'm a big believer in whatever you want, if you want something out of this game, you've got to put the work in it. You've got to work hard," said the outstanding center fielder, whose new plaque described him as "an artisan with a bat whose daily pursuit of excellence produced a .343 lifetime batting average, 2812 hits and 119 home runs." After the induction ceremony Donlin was asked what was the most thrilling moment in his career. He responded quickly, "No doubt about it, your first hit in the big leagues. That's tops. It means you're on your way. When you get the first hit, then you can get the rest." Kid Keenan Inducted into Hall Of Fame Thursday, December 1st, 1938 Kid Keenan was a giant among pitchers. Today his baseball career culminated in the ultimate -- induction in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. "My dad told me as a kid, 'To dream big and dream always'. That's something I never forgot. It's what got me here today at the Hall of Fame." One of his former teammates said when he introduced Keenan to the audience, "I have never seen such dedication to perfection. Anything less than perfect and he was not happy." During his outstanding career Keenan appeared in 417 games, struck out 3289 batters and walked 2189 in 2817.2 innings of work. His lifetime won-lost record was 189 victories and 119 defeats. He had a 3.36 ERA, and opposing hitters batted .218 against him. Later Keenan told the audience during his installation speech, "I'm not trying to be cocky, but I set such a high standard for myself. I wasn't happy when I pitched seven innings and gave up two runs and got a win." Dreams, dedication and strong desire combined with talent can get you to the Hall of Fame or wherever you want to go. Just ask the newest member of the Hall of Fame.
