Actually, they were saying that it might be an advantage for him to be that unpredictable, even if his follow-throughs are associated with certain pitches. If it were a matter of tipping off his pitches that would be bad, but I don't think the batter has enough time to follow the movement and tell which pitch it is before he swings.

That's a great expression, and not for the obvious reason. I'm going to Google that later and see what it means and its derivation.

Well, another Red Sox Yankees series is upon us. I hope its a good one from the Red Sox perspective, and also from an entertainment perspective.

BTW, what has gotten into Mr Posada lately. That guyis hitting the cover off the ball!

Here it is:

cock-a-hoop
adjective
1. very proud of something: boastful about something that has been achieved
2. unbalanced or twisted: in an unbalanced or twisted position
[From the phrase "to set cock on hoop," to drink festively.]

I assume this is a popular expression in the U.K., because I have never heard or seen it before.

redsoxford, sometime and if you are willing, I'd like to know how a fellow living in Buckingham, England got to be a Red Sox fan.

Good taste and intelligence, are my guesses.

Yeah, this is what it's all about, series like this. Even though the advantage needle is way over on the BoSox side these days, I live for this stuff. Will be glued to the telly for three nights.

I just hope he hasn't be hanging around Giambi for too long, if you know what I mean.

Speaking of Giambi, Do you really think the Yanks will void his contract? If they do, will it happen soon?

That sounds kind of crazy to me.

I don't think the Yankees will void it. The players' union will make sure that doesn't happen. I'm in the small minority of people who like Giambi and I'm hoping his foot gets better and starts hitting again. He had a streak earlier this season and once the whole lineup heats up, he will too. Granted Torre and Cashman don't bench him because of that USA Today story, I want him in the lineup.

Many many years ago I had a load of Airmiles that were due to expire so I decided to take a break somewhere. I looked at the various places Virgin Atlantic flew to and chose Boston as somewhere that could be nice to go. It was a toss-up between there and Chicago - I had already ruled out New York because in 1996 when flying back to London from Lima we had a few hours to kill in NY and the shuttle bus from Newark dropped us off at the PABT which isn't in the nicest part of New York (red light area and some drunk singing New York, New York to us as we left the PABT).

I booked a room at a hotel near Fenway (might have been HoJo on Kenmore Drive) and arrived just after a match had finished and wondered what was going on. I asked at the hotel and they said it was a baseball match. I had always been of the view that it was a glorified form of rounders because we never got much exposure to it over this side of the Atlantic and decided that I'd see if I could get a ticket for the following day which I did. Because I can't remember the dates, I can't remember who they were playing because my knowledge of it was zero.

It was a really good game and it was that that got me into following the sport and because it was at Fenway the team I decided to choose to follow was the Red Sox. It took a couple of years to really get into the whole thing and knowing all the intricacies, but it's always one of the first things I check on in the morning if it's a 7:05ET start.

The Yankees suffer the same problem as Burberry do in the UK. The youngsters who are just out of control tend to wear Burberry or Burberry style clothes and more often than not a Yankees baseball cap, and they have no idea what it means.

The name came from the fact that I used to live closer to Oxford (and I went to university there), and I thought that on a mainly US forum like here that I'd choose the nearest well known geographical settlement, and it also starts OX which was handy.

When we went on our honeymoon cruise, most of the people on board were from the US and they had all sorts of quizzes throughout the two weeks. I ended up with a better record on the baseball questions than many of them (and I was the only one to answer this question correctly : Name the three MLB teams whose name does not end in S? which I thought was fairly basic)

I was playing cricket with some friends last year and we were just doing throwing/catching practice and I took the cricket ball in my fingertips and tried to throw it knuckleball style. I did at one point manage to throw it with hardly any rotation - it's an interesting effect, especially if the guy catching it gets it on his wrist.

We have a 120 foot back garden so I can throw balls longish distances. Never have the accuracy to put a ball through a 2ft by 18in hole from 60ft 6 though. I think I'm stuff 1, movement 3, control 1, velocity <75mph if I was in OOTP on a 1-10 scale

redsoxford, thanks for sharing this. Very clever in coming up with "redsoxford" - for some reason I did not see the "oxford" in there. I'm sorry your first impression of NYC was bad, but you need to come back some day and see what makes this city great.

Wow, very impressive, redsoxford. It takes a real baseball fan to come up with "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim."

That's the one... I fell over on the next question on NBA teams that don't end in S - I got Jazz and Heat

The second time I visited was better, apart from the Empire State Building. I had about 3 hours to kill before the bus to JFK left so I went to the ESB and they said 1.5 hours wait for the lift, so I queued and got up to the 80th floor and walked round to get the next lift (the stairs weren't available) and was told there was another 1.5 hour wait there. They should have said 3 hours at the bottom, so they had to get me back down which threw their queueing mechanisms out of kilter.
