Another thing on Scotland is that at the previous World Cup in 1974, they also went out on goal difference, by only beating minnows Zaire 2-0, and yet drew then with Yugoslavia and Brazil. Showing that Scotland play well against the bigger teams, and appallingly against the lowly minnows.

Of course Zaire only have one claim to fame in that tournament, and that is for sending everyone into hysterics. I'm sure ukhs knows the incident I'm talking about.
It must have been cool to jave been able to watch those matches and see those classic players. Lucky you guys.

Yep. Mwepu Llunga was his name, and just to explain, he came out of the Zaire wall at a Brazil free kick on the referee's whistle, and just whacked the ball away downfield.

In fact, they were as bad in the other two games. They lost 9-0 to Yugoslavia, tying the record for the heaviest defeat at a World Cup finals tournament, and when I saw some footage of the Scotland game recently, the ref had a horrendous time to try and keep them 10 yards away at a free kick, and eventually had to give up.
I really don't know how they qualified in the first place, if they didn't even know the rules of the game.

Scotland are a bit like the Keystone cops when it comes to World Cup Finals 1974 getting knocked out without losing a game, 1978 Willie Johnston getting sent home and poor results against Peru and Iran, was it 1986 they had to beat Uruguay to go through and Uruguay even helped them by getting a man sent of in the 1st minute and Scotland still failed to beat them.

Personally the 78 World Cup was the best although for about 5 minutes the 1982 came close as think it was David Narey slammed a cracking goal in against Brazil to take the lead only for it to make Brazil mad and they went on to win 4-1.

My favorite match of all time was the Germany vs France semifinal match in 1982

I didn't know myself, but yes that is correct. Jose Batista after 55 seconds.
Also the only time that Canada have reached the finals - and lost all three games without scoring a single game.
And Northern Ireland qualified out of the group after picking up just one point. Work that one out.

Memory serves me right, left hand side of the field in the Uruguay half level with the penalty box didn't even bother with a tackle just kicked the Scotland player lol.
