It is up to him. But everyone assumes there are plays they could not make because one has never been allowed to try.

There are certain physical limitations in a lefty going to his right and then throwing back to first from in the hole. He'd be giving up a lot.

I'll agree that a lefthanded catcher is something that can and should be tried.

I was looking over the Excel list and saw a couple of my ancestors who should debut later since they went to college:

Bill "Whip" Turnbull - 1963
Joseph "Bazooka Joe" Burley -1962
Gordon "The Goat" Fellows -1969
John "Black Jack" Burley - 1978

And a couple guys look like they were skipped:
Richard Dastardly Dick" Sharkey - 1955
Robert "Bub" Turnbull -1955

Could they debut in the next two years? Sharkey in '57 and Turnbull in '58?

Is this the first player you have added? Congrats if it is
This player should be in the next draft and be a 24 year old. Maybe Matt will make him a fully developed player out of the gate. We can say he played in the Mexican leagues for a few years before being scouted by big leage clubs.
Have fun

Yes he is. I just discovered OOTP a couple days ago and it's much better than Baseball Mogul so far. I think I'll keep his birthdate for realism. The Mexican League idea sounds good. He moved to Texas when he was 9, but that doesn't really matter much. Will my uncle be in next year's draft, too? He would be 19.

I'm thinking about adding my mother's side of the family as well. Irish-Catholics from Massachusetts. Would that be okay? i don't want to add too many if i shouldn't

Maybe the younger brother talked his older brother into trying the majors together.

No problem adding family members on your mother's side. There are people with a handful of ancestors and those with many. Keep in mind though that the way Matt does it you have a better chance (bu no guarantees) of having your ancestor be a star player if there are fewer of them. I think they end up higher in the draft. Of course you could have one ancestor and he could get a career ending injury. Just the way it goes.

I don't have the SS handy, but I doubt they were skipped. If their birthdays are Oct 1 or later, they go in the next yr.

If they were skipped, I'll look into it & add them in 57.

Looks like your dad will be 25 in Oct of next season, so he'll be major le ague ready. Again, we could say he played, what, 5 years in Mexico. Yes his brother will come in too if he'll be 19.

As for your mother's side, the basic limitation is 3 anceastors per last name per generation. So 3 Camacho's in your dad's generation, 3 in yours, etc. Since you mom's family has a different name, you can add 3 more of them per generation.

I really only enforce that rule if someone goes out of control. I'm pretty lenient.

If you insisted, I'd give it a try, but I switched one LH MIF to RH already. I assumed it was an oversight. Like Tom said, there are certain plays that would be tougher for them. Anything hit to the 3b side, they'd have to plant, turn & throw to 1st.

OOTP might affect their defense because of handedness, but I'm not sure.

I think he's right, unless the spreadsheet link in your sig is out of date and things have changed.

Dick Sharkey's birthdate is 2/6/1937
Bub Turnbull's is 8/2/1937

Both should have debuted in 1955. No matter really, though. They can just be more developed. Even with mucho macho's guys, there were still only 5 ancestors anyway.

You still have about 650 posts before you catch up to me. Of course I had nearly a 2 year head start on you.

sounds good to me. I'll add a 3 or 4 more from my mom's side and then i'm pretty much done. i could add my son, but he's only 12 now.

I am already thinking up some cool stories. A legend of the Mexican leagues and after a few years he got bored of being the very best and decided to go north and see what he could do.
Very cool stuff
