SUPREME LEAGUE OPENS 4TH SEASON
This weekend baseball has bloomed all over South Island in abundance... the South Island Supreme League opened it 4th season of semi-pro baseball with a flurry of 6 games... last year's champion Mystic has already bit the dust on the diamond... newly-arrived Anderson made an auspicious beginning, trouncing the Mariners 7-1... newcomer Meraux, the champion last year in the South Island Secondary League, debuted wth a 5-4 victory over the Zebulon Zips... Delta dumped Jackson 6-2... Moon Valley knocked off St. Dominic 4-2... Kofa triumphed over St. Pete 9-4... and Bar Harbor belted St. Luke's Place 11-3.

Well, one thing for sure, pilgrim, music is great in '58... it's the time of rockabilly, a blend of rock and hillbilly music... it's the time of joyful rock 'n' roll, sweet rhythm and blue and teenybop pop and rock from the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell and the Everly Brothers... a time of great do-wops groups and a slew of pretty ladies like Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, McGuire Sisters, Fontane Sisters and Chordettes, plus many other one-hit wonders... it's Happy Days all across the whole wide USA.

It's April, 1958... on top of the country charts is Don Gibson, who has a two-sided hit with "Oh Lonesome Me" backed with one the greatest song ever written, "I Can't Stop Loving You" ... Don Gibson penned both classics.

So all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too, get ready for EC to bless and annoint your pretty little peapickin' ears with the country's number one country song "Oh Lonesome Me".

Don Gibson reached the top spot on the country charts with "Oh Lonesome Me" and stayed there for 8 weeks... on the other side of the record, which was called the B-side, was one of the greatest songs ever written "I Can't Stop Loving You"... it reached #7 on the country charts.

R&B singer, the great Ray Charles, recorded "I Can't Stop Loving You" 2 years later and had the biggest song of his illustrious career with it and also the biggest and best-selling album of his career with "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music".

WIDE OPENER RACE PREDICTED FOR '58 SI SECONDARY LEAGUE
The two best clubs are gone from the South Island Secondary League... Meraux and Anderson have been promoted to the senior league, the Supreme League... that means it's anybody's pennant to win in 1958... the two new teams in the league did not fare well in the first weekend of play... fresh from the Supreme League, Guedon fell to Grin Hill 8-1 and Pelham lost to New Yerby in extra innings 7-2... Billings looked good besting Parkland in 12 innings 9-5 and Columbia outplayed the Braxton Bruins 4-1.

For the 4th straight week the Champs have the number one song... cowboy star Gene Autry owned the record label... the Champs got their name from Gene Autry's horse "Champion"... here is a great Latin instrumental called "Tequila".

ACADIANS TIED WITH NEW TEAMS MERAUX AND ANDERSON FOR SUPREME LEAGUE LEAD
The new guys in town are making big waves so far in the South Island Supreme League after the first two weekends of action... the Meraux Tigers and Anderson Ravens have prospered with 2 straight victories... they are tied with the Bar Harbor Acadians for first place... the Tigers have wins over Zebulon and Kofa, while the Ravens have beaten last year title winner Mystic and Delta... the Acadians have whipped two lesser lights St. Luke's Place and Zebulon.

In this weekend's results Meraux spanked the Kofa Kings 7-2... Anderson prevailed over the Delta Stars 4-1... Bar Harbor blanked the Zebulon Zips 4-0... the Mystic Mariners righted the ship this week with an 8-7 triumph over the Moon Valley Dreams... St. Pete clipped the St. Dominic Saints 5-3... and St. Luke's Place jolted the Jackson Jackalopes 8-5.
