Pre-Week GM Thoughts:
I looked through my organizational depth and it looks like if Joe Chambers doens't start hitting the ball, I may be leaning on a 20-yera old kid to come up. Mario Gomez came over to Cavalier Organization in December of 2018 and has developed into a decent prospect. Alexis Shelton sees him as a 2.5* player now with 3.5* potential. He has a solid glove, will make good contact, and hit the gaps. The downfall? He has little power (4/9) and no speed (4). But we need someone to hit the ball, maybe this 20 year old will spark something. Joe Chambers is on notice, this is his week to do something... Joe Chambers was rated very high by our previous scout, Shelton doesn't see him that high, and on top of that he has taken some huge developmental hits. His struggles during the spring opened the organizations eyes, that Chambers might be better suited as a Utility/back-up man than a full-time starter. Makes me look back at that Perez/Reyes swap last year and think twice, but its all part of the game...

Game 32: Salisbury 1, Norfolk 11
Matt Hollis (6-1) threw another complete game, allwoing just 3 hits and 1 run, while striking out 9. Francisco Reyes was the offensive star going 2-3 with 4 RBI's, including a grand-slam (9). Maik Wassink hit a 3-run HR (4) and King Brock picked up 2 hits and 2 RBI's. The Cav's collected 11 hits on the day and left 4 me on.

Game 33: Salisbury 1, Norfolk 7
Arturo Ramirez (3-1) went 5.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run. He walked 3 and struck out 6. Derek Carter threw the final 2 innings to pick up the save (3). Francisco Reyes hit 2 HR's (11), both solo-shots, and Augusto Rodriguez picked up 2 hits and 4 RBI's, including 2-run HR (3). Sergio Galvez added 3 hits. The Cav's picked up 14 hits and left 5 men on.

Game 34: Salisbury 4, Norfolk 7
Takayuki Iemochi (5-0) went 8 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 8. Joe Chambers led the offense with 3 RBI's on 2 hits, including a HR (1). King Brock and Maik Wassink each had 3 hits. The Cav's collected 16 hits and left 9 men on.

Game 35: Norfolk 5, Washington 7
Vaughan Griffith (3-3) got roughed up over 4.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks. Ed Duke had 2 hits, and Francisco Reyes (12) and Yann Gosselin (4) both hit 2-run HR's. The Cav's had 8 hits and left 4 men on.

Game 36: Norfolk 4, Washington 3
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, striking out 5. Rick Kelly threw a shut-out 7th for the win (1-1) and Dalton Whitaker threw the 9th for the save (9). Joe Chambers and King Brock each had 2 hits and 1 RBI to pace the offense. The Cav's collected a total of 8 hits and left 7 men on.

Injury News: Maik Wassink left the game with shoulder soreness and we were advised that he needs to rest for 1-2 weeks. We will send him off to the DL, move Mario Reyes into the starting lineup and call up Emilo Gonzalez. Emilo will need to be wavied before we send him down and there has been a lot of 'trade' inquiry regarding him so it will be intersting to see what happens. With Reyes playing second, our defense will take a little hit. Emilo, by the way, is listed as a short-stop, but has NO defensive position rating. Guess his days as a DH have caught up to him.

Game 37: Norfolk 3, Washington 1
Matt Hollis (7-1) went 8 shut-out innings, allowing 4 hits, before giving the ball the Dalton Whitaker who picked up the save (10). Augusto Rodriguez lead the offense with 3 hits, and 4 other Cav's had 2 each. Overall the Cav's had 12 hits and left 9 men on.

Game 38: Norfolk 3, Washington 9
Arturo Ramirez (3-2) went 5 innings, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs, he did get touched up for 3 HR's. Jeff Lewis collected 3 hits and Joe Chambers had 2 hits and 1 RBI on a solo-HR (2). The Cav's finished the day with 8 hits and left 6 men stranded.

League News:
  • Matt Fisher of the Richmond Cardinals will miss 4 months with a torn labrum. Fisher was off to a hot starting hitting .302-8-22 and hopes to be able to rejoin the Cardinals before the end of the season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jorge Alonso (New Castle Colonials) 12-30, 4 HR's, 8 RBI's
MarVa: Joe Chambers (Norfolk Cavaliers) 12-25, 2 HR's, 7 RBI's, 5 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (128.2)
2) Newark Millers (117.8)
3) Dover Generals (114.9)
4) Baltimore Barons (112.0)
5) Annapolis Admirals (106.0)

GM Notes:
Heading into Washington this week, starts a 14 game road-trip with no days off, and includes our first trip to a Delaware Park where our pitchers will be required to take some swings. Should be fun... Javier Jancez started off red-hot out of the lead-off slot, but has struggled this month. Yann Gosselin is crushing the ball and I just can't seem to get him enough AB's. I am tinkering with the idea of putting Reyes in LF and Gosselin at DH. Sitting Galvez and Janchez or at least splitting time with them. Galvez has raised his average over .200. Time to do some more tinkering... The offense looked good this week, but we also got a huge boost playing the Salisbury Ports... Chambers lives to see another week. After being put under the spotlight he tore it up, hopefully he won't revert back to where he was 2 weeks ago, but either way the microscope is still on.

Week 7 (2020)

Current Week: 5-2 (31-14 - GB (+5))
Next Week: 3 @ Richmond Cardinals, 3 vs Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 87
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 232 (2nd)
Avg: .280 (2nd)
HR: 57 (2nd)
SB: 46 (t-1st)
Runs Against: 157 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.10 (1st)
Pen ERA: 3.83 (3rd)
Def Eff: .718 (1st)

Lineup Changes: With Janchez struggling (.236-1-14) and Galvez struggling, albeit warming up (.244-3-10) I decided to give Yann Gosselin (.441-4-9) some ab's. He is red-hot right now, so he will move to the DH role, with Francisco Reyes moving to Left and Ramon Granados to center. Our defense takes a little hit here, but our offense "should" take a bump. Going with who is hot. We will see how it works out.

Game 39: Norfolk 11, Ellicott City 4
Takayuki Iemochi (6-0) went 6.2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits to continue his surprising start. Ramon Granados lead the offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI's and Jeff Lewis helped out with 2 hits and 5 RBI's, including a HR (5). The offense totaled 13 hits and left 7 men on.

Game 40: Norfolk 5, Ellicott City 4
Vaughan Griffith (4-3) went 7.2 innings, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs while striking out 10. Dalton Whitaker threw the 9th for the save (11). Yann Gosselin lead the offense with 3 hits, including a lead-off HR (5), and Jeff Lewis added 2 hits and 2 RBI's, including another HR (6). The Cav's had 10 hits and left 8 men on.

Injury News: We got some good news. The blister on Francisco Reyes hand isn't as bad as originally thought and he will miss about 5 days, he is now listed "day-to-day".

Game 41: Norfolk 5, Ellicott City 6
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 7. Dan Nelson took the blown save/loss (1, 1-2) in the 11th giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, retiring 2. Yann Gosselin went yard again (6) collecting 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Jeff Lewis and King Brock each had 2 hits. Joe Chambers went yard (3). The Cav's collected 10 hits and left 7 on.

Injury News: Kent Davis is ready to come of the DL. He will be sent down to AAA to get some swings in after missing 40 days.

Game 42: Norfolk 2, Lewes 0
Matt Hollis (8-1) threw 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, while striking out 8. Dan Nelson bounced back from a rough game, to pick up the save (1). Despite being only 15% (and not in the set-lineup) Francisco Reyes went 3-4. Ed Duke also collected 3 hits, including a 2-run HR (4). For the game the Cav's had 9 hits and left only 3 on.

Game 43: Norfolk 5, Lewes 4
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. Luis Gonzalez (1-0) took home the win and Dalton Whitaker the save (12) pitching a perfect 9th. King Brock lead the offense with 3 hits, 2 doubles, Ed Duke hit a 2-run HR (5). The Cav's had a total of 9 hits and left 9 men on.

Game 44: Norfolk 5, Lewes 4
Takayuki Iemochi (ND) threw 122 pitches over 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits. Rick Kelly (2-1) got the win in relief, and Dalton Whitaker picked up the save (13). King Brock had 2 hits, including another double to lead the offense, as 5 different Cav's had an RBI and a Run scored. The offense had 7 hits and left 6 on the base paths.

Game 45: Norfolk 2, Lewes 6
Vaughan Griffith (4-4) went 5.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 8. The offense was a little sluggish with Ed Duke leading the way with 2 hits and Joe Chambers driving in the only Cav's runs with a 2-run HR (4) in the 9th. The Cav's had only 5 hits, and left 7 men on.

Injury News: Yann Gosselin sprained his wrist during an AB and will miss 1-2 weeks. We will put him on the DL and call up Kent Davis (Rehab: .444-0-1). Reyes is ready to go as well, so we will make the proper lineup adjustments and hopefully stay hot.

League News:
  • Ashton George of the Seaford Blue Jays is out 4 months with a ruptured finger tendon. George was having a solid season, in 19 games he was 2-1 with 6 saves and a 2.41 ERA. He is 32.1 IP away from his vesting option, its not looking good.
  • Jose Velasquez of the Dover Generals is out 12 months with a torn flexor tendon. Jose, is 28, and was the #3 man in the Generals rotation. On the season he was 4-2 3.08 in 9 starts. Expect Dover to make a move.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Grant Wright (Georgetown Sixteens) 14-26, 1 HR, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Andres Salinas (Washington Senators) 10-22, 4 HR's, 9 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (127.0)
2) Dover Generals (111.5)
3) Annapolis Admirals (109.4)
4) Milford Clippers (109.0)
5) Newark Millers (106.5)

GM Notes:
We will finally hit home next week after our longest road trip of the season, 14 games. I know I am looking forward to some home cooked food... Bill Fox is getting upset with us as we continue to offer him a minor league deal. He is either holding out for way too much money or just doesn't really want to play this season. Alexis Shelton says he still has some gas in his tank... Ernesto Beneques will be heading down to AAA as soon as I figure out who I want to bring up. I am thinking Armando Lopez, get him some reps out of the bullpen and maybe spell Griffith from time to time. Not 100% sure yet. I could also bring up Ivan Pineda, or maybe pull off a small time deal, drop Pineda/Beneques/Cody Johnson, etc. Have some planning to do... Augusto Rodriguez has started to hit the ball better, currently coming in at .229, he was up to .244 at one point... Our extra-inning performance continues to struggle. I still find it hard to believe that we haven't one yet. 0-6!... We had a strong month, and somehow our offense was #1 in HR's for a little bit. Something I didn't think we'd see in Norfolk... I am interested in seeing how Takayuki Iemochi pitches the rest of the season. Maybe he is this good. Either way he has meant quite a bit to us in Norfolk with the inconsistency of our #3 and #5 starters and the offense.

Week 8 (2020)

Current Week: 5-1 (36-15 - GB (+7.5))
Next Week: 4 @ Dover Generals, 3 @ Washington Senators
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 88 (+1)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 271 (2nd)
Avg: .283 (1st)
HR: 65 (1st)
SB: 58 (1st)
Runs Against: 176 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.09 (1st)
Pen ERA: 3.79 (3rd)
Def Eff: .718 (1st)

Looking at the Roster I found this interesting. The "Hot" players are the veterans: King Brock, Ed Duke and Francisco Reyes, and the "Cold" players are the young'ns: Javier Janchez, Sergio Galvez and Ramon Granados.

Game 46: Norfolk 12, Richmond 3
Miguel Contreras (6-1) threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball, allowing 2 runs, while striking out 6. Kent Davis came back in full force going 3-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI's. Cody Johnson stroked 4 hits and scored 3 times. King Brock (4) and Francisco Reyes (13) both went deep. The Cavs totaled 15 hits and left 8 men on base.

Injury News: Maik Wassink is ready to come off the DL. He will be added to the active roster and Emilo Gonzalez has been waived/DFA'd. I am curious if there will be any interest in him. Emilio is 29 has no position, last year was a 5 at SS, and was 0-6 during his NFK tenure... Wassink will head back out to 2B, and Mario Reyes will return to back-up duties. Mario slumped as a starter and is now hitting .221-2-9 in 68 AB's.

Game 47: Norfolk 14, Richmond 1
Matt Hollis (9-1) continued to truck along, going 9 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, while striking out 9. Jeff Lewis lead the offense with 3 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBI's, including an HR (7). King Brock (5) and Francisco Reyes (14) each went deep. The offense collected 17 hits and left 6 men on.

Game 48: Norfolk 6, Richmond 2
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 4.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 run, throwing 78 pitches before giving way. Ernesto Beneques (1-1) went 2.1 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3 for the win. Joe Chambers was the star for the offense, going 3-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI's, including a 2B and a solo-HR (5). The Cav's picked up 11 more hits and left 11 me on.

** Side Notes: This is our second series against the Cardinals and we have missed Don Sweetapple each time.

Game 49: Virginia Beach 0, Norfolk 7
Tatayuki Iemochi (6-1) took his first loss of the season, allowing 7 runs over 6 innings, on 2 walks and 5 hits. He did strike out 7. Ernesto Beneques went the final 3 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5. Maik Wassink and Francisco Reyes each had 2 hits. The offense collected only 6 and left 3 men on.

Game 50: Virginia Beach 1, Norfolk 3
Vaughan Griffith (5-4) wenet 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 1 run while striking out 9. Dalton Whitaker threw the 9th for the save (14). The offense was sluggish again, with Francisco Reyes leading the way with 2 hits and an RBI. On the Day the Cav's managed only 6 singles and left 3 men on.

Game 51: Virginia Beach 3, Norfolk 4
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 1.2 innings, allowing 2 hits, he left injured. Dan Nelson threw 3 innings of relief allwoing 5 hits and 3 runs. Derek Carker (2-0) took home the win with 2 perfect innings, striking out 3. The offense was lead by Kent Davis who had 3 hits, and the bullpen was saved by John O'Donegan who hit a PH-game tying HR (4) in the bottom of the 9th. The Cav's got back to hitting, with a 12 hit day, bu tleft 13 runners stranded.

Injury News: 43 pitches into the game Miguel Contereras limped off the field. During the game he was examined and it was determined that he will miss 4-5 weeks with a strained hamstring. This is a HUGE blow to us. On the season Miguel is 6-1 1.54 in 11 games... This is the longest timeframe that Miguel has ever missed during his 8 year career.

Cavaliers Lose Contreras for 4-5 Weeks: Dealing with injuries is part of the game, and now Miguel Contreras of the Cavaliers knows this firsthand. He was injured against the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs while throwing the ball. Because of a hamstring strain, the Norfolk starting pitcher is expected to miss 4-5 weeks. Contreras was a little upset, but understands it comes with the territory. "Baseball can be a contact sport. You try to be careful, but no matter how careful you are, injuries happen." This season-to-date, Contreras has fashioned a 6-1 mark and 1.54 ERA in 70 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .172 against him and he has logged 74 strikeouts.

League News:
  • The Baltimore Barons and Dover Generals got the trade season started off early this year with a swap of reserves. Catcher Jose Tellez (.423-1-6 26 ABs) is heading to Baltimore along with a minor leaguer for OF'er Jack Dooley (.259-0-9 116 ABs) and $1.56M.
  • Looking for pitching help the Georgetown Sixteens dealt 27-year-out fielder Joe Middleton (.182-0-6, 60 ABs) and a minor leaguer to the Newark Millers for SP Adrian Otero (4-3 3.86, 9 GS).
  • Bill Fox finally signed a deal. He reached an agreement with the Ellicott City Express for $850,000 for the rest of year. I will be keeping an eye on him.
  • Glenn Jenkins of the Ellicott City Express has a torn meniscus in his knee and will miss about 4 weeks of games. Jenkins will be missed, as he is hitting .330-5-14 for the Express this year.
  • The Chesapeake Blue Crabs sent William Russel (.314-5-18) and a minor leaguer to the Christiana Blue Hens for Tim Simmons (.310-7-35) and $3M.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Tim Simmons (Christiana Blue Hens) 9-21, 3 HR's, 7 RBI's
MarVa: Francisco Reyes (Norfolk Cavaliers) 12-26, 2 HR's, 4 RBI's
** Tim Simmons celebrated his player of the week award by getting traded to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs.

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (135.1)
2) Dover Generals (115.6)
3) Newark Millers (109.0)
4) Milford Clippers (107.4)
5) Washington Senators (103.8)

GM Notes:
Well now we get to see what this team is made of without one of our aces, and on top of that Tatayuki Iemochi took a little development dip, losing some of his control. I am going to go with rookie Armando Lopez to fill in the hole, I really want to bring up Paul Brown, but his control is under 10 (of 20) and I have a thing about starters and their control. He is up to 8 now, after taking a 4 hit drop from 11 at the end of the year last season. One thing we have going for us is our division is pretty bad... Offensively we are starting to come around with the big guys Brock and Reyes hitting the ball well. I am not sure what is going on with Ed Duke as he seems to have lost some of his power. Am I sitting him too much? Something to consider, maybe... I have said this a few times, about not having much faith in this team and now its time for them to prove me wrong. The next month will really be telling, and I am actually looking forward to it, but I will miss Miguel. At 32 hopefully he isn't starting to break down. He has started at least 31 games every season.

Up next is the May in review then the first years player draft...

May in Review 2020

Delaware Conference Monthly Awards

DE Conference Batter of the Month Honors to Kohl: Andy Kohl battered Delaware Conference pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Kohl told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 25 games, Kohl hit .310 with 11 home runs, 30 RBIs and scored 19 runs. This season in 45 games, Kohl has hit at a .306 clip with 53 hits, 20 home runs, 58 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Heath Earns DE Conference Top Pitcher Trophy: "The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we might have to start inviting him out with us after the games." Will Heath put together a very solid month to take home the Delaware Conference's top pitching honor in May. The 24-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 15 relief appearances he raked in 10 saves and 15 strikeouts in 15 innings as he put together his 2-0 record and 2.40 ERA. This season Heath has rung up 14 saves. He is carrying a 2-2 record with a 3.47 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched.

Delaware Conference Names Rookie of Month: Chad Campbell's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Milford left fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .412 with 5 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. Campbell also scored 8 times and drove in 9 runs. So far this season Campbell has 1 home run and a .369 batting average.

MarVa Conference Monthly Awards

Reyes Awarded May's MarVa Conf Top Bat Prize: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old Francisco Reyes put together a solid offensive month for Norfolk and was crowned May's top batter in the MarVa Conference. He batted .400 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs and 22 runs scored. In 50 games Reyes is hitting .292 this season with 52 hits, 14 home runs, 39 RBIs, 27 walks, .380 OBP and has scored 31 runs.

May's Starter of the Month Goes to Hollis: The Pitcher of the Month Award has been announced and the MarVa Conference winner is Norfolk hurler, Matt Hollis. For his fine efforts in May he has been named the league's #1 pitcher. During the month, Hollis excelled with a 1.07 ERA and 5 wins and no losses. In 42 innings he struck out 43 and gave up 25 hits and 12 walks. This season to date Hollis has a record of 9 wins and 1 loss with a 2.22 ERA, has appeared in 10 games and struck out 92 in 81 innings.

Sensational Month for MarVa Conf Rookie: Tsuginori Ichikawa is a latecomer to this league. The 30-year-old Salisbury second baseman is putting up quality numbers, even though he's not your traditional rookie. On the heels of posting a .293 average, the MarVa Conference named him May's Rookie of the Month. He hit 4 home runs last month, knocking in 11 runs and scoring 16 runs. He banged out 34 hits and drew 8 walks to post a .339 OBP. In his 2020 season totals, Ichikawa has 7 home runs, .284 BA, .328 OBP, 20 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Delaware Conference League Leaders

MarVa Conference League Leaders

Standings as of June 1st 2020

The biggest surprise to me is the turn around of the Dover Generals. Last season they finished 4th with a .543 WPct. They sat down reevaluated, let a few good guys go and rebuilt. A quick turn around, by first year GM John Ross.

The Northern Division shaping up to be a good battle yet again. The Colonials were the favorites to win at the beginning of the season, but they lost their ace so they have their work cut out for them. Both Newark and Milford have made a lot of moves this season/off-season to make themselves better.

The Eastern Division is up for grabs. I like these kinds of races and I hope that all 4 teams will stay in the battle all season. The Admirals have won the division the past 4 years (5 of 7), so I am ready for someone else to take the title.

In the Western Division its shaping up to be the Cavaliers division again. That being said, the injury to Miguel Contreras may open the door. The Cav's staff isn't as strong as it once was.

Norfolk in Review - May 2020

Hollis and Contreras were lights out for the month of May and boy will we miss Miguel. Vaughan Griffith has stepped it up and seems to be finding a nice groove. The biggest mark against Griffith is his movement so he his prone to giving up HR's. Dan Nelson continues to struggle this year, but I am going to stay with him. I have a feeling he will step it up. Rick Kelly is coming up on as a free-agent, so I may end up looking to move him over the next two months.

On the Watch List for June:
Dan Nelson. This is his last month or maybe only part of the month, before a move is made.

Ernesto Beneques drops off the watch list as he picked it up in 11 innings in May.

There have been some real surprises on the offensive side. John O'Dongegan (.385-4-11) and Yann Gosselin (.519-4-8). I was sad to see Yann go down as soon as I put him the starting lineup. Francisco Reyes had an amazing month and I hope this is more "him" than April.

On the Watch List for June:
Ed Duke. Thinking O'Donegan will get some more PT if Duke continues to hit .241. Duke might be a little better defender, so that is something I will have to think about.

The Young Guns (Galvez, Janchez, Granados): I would like one of these kids to step up and take over the LF slot. Right now I am playing a 3-man platoon. Trying to get one of them to step up.

This is just hard to look at it, that name on the top is OUCH. Another big hit is Mauro Candelaria, it looks like the injuries are starting to catch up to him. He will be returning soon, but headed to AAA to get some swings. Can I really sit Chambers? According to Alexis Shelton Candelaria took a 1 point hit in contact (10 to 9) and a hit in power (5 to 4). I have him around for 2 or 3 more years (player opt 3rd) and would like him to start, but its not looking good.

We are 12-3 in 1-run games, but an paultry 0-6 in X-Inning games. Crazy stuff right there. I do have to say I am surprised our offense is rated so highly, they really don't seem to be doing that well! I am glad we put up a 23 win month, I was shooting for 20, this gives me some hope. Now if we can just bare through the next 5 weeks...

The #1 Draft Picks of the Past

The DelMarVa Baseball League has been around since 2013 and this years draft marks the 8th draft in DBL history. Here is a look at the past 7 #2 overall draft picks, from the All-Stars to the Busts to the Prospect... A look back.

2013 - Jorge Moran, Starting Pitcher, drafted #1 by the Chesapeake Blue Crabs out of Columbia U. He signed for $4,750,000. Moran is a 2 time all-star and he won his first Golden Arm Award last season with the Milton Brewers. Signed a 5-year deal with the Lewes Braves this off-season for $80,000,000.

2014 - Gabriel Santos, Starting Pitcher, drafted #1 by the Norfolk Cavaliers out of highschool. He signed for $4,500,000. Finally made the bigs in 2019 out of the bullpen. Once a top pitching prospect, now nothing looks like he will be a solid middle-man.

2015 - Phil Carlson, Starting Pitcher, drafted #1 by the Lewes Braves out of high school. He signed with the Braves for $9,060,000. Phil's control has never developed and it looks like he will be career minor leaguer.

2016 - Will Riley, Catcher, drafted #1 overall by the Ellicott City Express out of Vanderbilt U. Signed a $9,190,000 signing bonus. The first non-pitcher taken as the #1 pick. Made a quick trip through the minors and came up and won the Newcomer of the Year Award. Solid player, will be a due a big payday when he hits free-agency.

2017 - Cornell Pearson, SP, drafted by the Seaford Blue Jays with the first pick in 2017, out of Creighton. He signed a $8,250,000 deal. Cornell will be an ace of the future and he is hoping to get out of Seaford soon, or hopes that Seaford can turn things around. Much better than his record shows, but has very little support.

2018 - Pablo Garcia, SP, Salisbury Ports, was drafted out of Oral Roberts University and signed for $7,700,000. Garcias spent one year in the minors then came up with a bang and had a solid rookie campaign. He should win a Golden Arm or two in the future. Like Pearson, wishes his team was a little better.

2019 - Shunen Koyama, RF, Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, drafted out of U of New Mexico and signed for $4,500,000. After a slow first year in A-ball has stepped it up a notch and is ready for his move to AA. Currently the #59 prospect in the DBL.

2020 First Year Draft Preview

DBL News: First-Year Player Draft: Rookie draft day is here! A day of excitement and anticipation in the baseball world. A big day for DELMARVA Baseball League teams and all the aspiring amateur players eligible to be drafted. The first five choices will be made by Virginia Beach, Seaford, Wilmington, Christiana and Chesapeake.

It has been reported on BNN that the first ten selections are likely to include:

1. Will Hayes, 20 year-old center fielder out of college.
2. Duncan Gilmore, 19 year-old first baseman out of college.
3. Pat Arthur, 21 year-old shortstop out of college.
4. William Jefferson, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
5. Bryant Frank, 19 year-old shortstop out of high-school.
6. Gilberto Flores, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
7. Ron MacKinley, 18 year-old right fielder out of high-school.
8. Steve Silver, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
9. Stan Da Silva, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
10. Leonard Lawson, 18 year-old center fielder out of high-school.

A lot of the analysts are keeping an eye on Edmond Scott. Edmond is a 4* prospect out of Towson College, he was 10-4 2.23 this season with a 144 K's in 129.1 IP. He has the type of arm that will eat innings and the potential to have 4 10+ pitches. His star is bright, why will he be looked hard at? He is asking for a record $10,000,000! His asking price keeps him off many top-10 mock drafts...

Norfolk 2020 Draft
The Cavaliers will have the 15th pick in the draft this season, so we should be able to get someone pretty decent. Overall we only have 7 picks during the 10 round first player draft.

Round 1: Pick 15
Round 2: Pick 14
Round 3: Pick 20
Round 4: Pick 20
Round 5: Pick 20
Round 7: Pick 20
Round 9: Pick 20

This draft isn't too deep, as has been with the past drafts with only one player 19 year-old shortstop Bryant Frank rated to have 5* potential, and 11 others with 3.5* or better. We are hoping that we can steal a player like Fran ($6,500,000 demand) or maybe a college player like Joe Taylor or Pat Author.

Norfolk - Past Draft Recap
The Cavaliers have the top organization in the DBL, but looking at their draft history you would never know. Only two players from the draft are in the teams top 20 prospects, and (if I counted correctly) only 5 players have made their debut with the Cavaliers. One of them, Ramon Granados, made his big league debut this season. Lucky for me I have had scouts discover some really impressive players, and the assets to pull of some pretty special trades. Hopefully this draft will be a little different, a new scout, a new philosophy.

Here is a look at the past drafts.

2020 First Year Draft

2020 First Year Player Draft
With the #1 pick in the 2020 Draft the Virigina Beach Surf Dawgs take center-fielder Will Hayes from Farleigh Dickinson College. Will is looking for $2,200,000 to sign on. During his collegiate season will hit .313-11-63. Known for his great defensive ability and runnning speed. The 20 year old is a 4* prospect (current 1*). Alexis Shelton sees Will Hayes as "a future big-league regular, but he's got the talent to exceed even that projection". Now we will see if the Surf Dawgs can sign him.
Contact: 4/8; Gap: 9/12; HR: 4/9; Eye: 5/8; K's: 7/16

** Edmond Scott goes #3 to the Wilmington Iron Pigs. We will keep an eye on him to see what he signs for, or if he even does.
Stuff: 7/11; Movement: 13/15; Control: 7/14; GB%: 60%; Stam: 18

2020 Norfolk Cavaliers Draft:
Round 1: Pick 15

Alexis Shelton Recommendation: Bernard McCormick 3.5* Prospect
19 years-old; Durable; Very Easy; HS
Stuff: 6/12; Movement: 10/13; Control: 3/10; GB%: 56%; Stam: 11
Who I am Leaning towards: Michael Russel, 3.5* Prospect
20 years-old; Durable; Extremely Hard; College
Contact: 7/10; Gap: 6/9; HR: 5/12; Eye: 5/9; K's: 4/10

I decided to go with Michael Russel (15th). Along with ratings above he is a 20 LF, 14 CF, 13 RF, 16 Speed, 12 Stealing. He hit .296-10-43 for Oregon St last year. I don't think we will have any issues signing him.

Round 2: Pick 14
Nathan Esparza (39th), SS, HS Philadelphia

Highest rated potential player around. Questions about his hitting, but should be a decent fielder. Durable; Extremely Hard; HS
Contact: 6/10; Gap: 4/7; HR: 4/6; Eye: 4/10; K's: 3/13
Speed: 14; Stealing: 17; Defense is all 14+
During HS he hit .457-0-30
Work Ethic: High

** From here on out I went with Scouts Recommendation **

Round 3: Pick 20
CF Ron Howard (63rd)
out of Lane HS in Brooklyn
1* Potential, 18 yrs old, CF
Not much to say about this guy, just shows you how light this draft is.
Contact: 1/5; Gap: 6/10; HR: 1/5; Eye: 1/4; K's: 3/8
He is an average outfielder with great speed.
Lane HS: .429-1-28

Round 4: Pick 20
Maurice George (84th)

1/2* Potential, 18 years-old, SP
Stuff: 6/10; Movement: 9/10; Control: 1/4
Stamina: 17, GB%: 53%
He does have 3 pitches with 10+ potential.
Mepham HS: 13 GS, 9-1 1.74 103.2 IP, 136K

Round 5: Pick 20
Paul Morrissey (104th)

1* Potential, 22 yrs old, SS
Contact: 6/8; Gap: 5/6; HR: 2/3; Eye: 4/6; K's: 3/6
A good fielder and base runner. Will he be able to hit?
St John's College: .260-2-48

Round 7: Pick 20
Bobby Flynn (144th)

1* Potential, 18 yrs old, Catcher
Contact: 2/5; Gap: 7/10; HR: 1/6; Eye: 1/3; K's: 4/9
Not really sure why Alexis picked this guy, but its always nice to have another catcher around... I guess.
Union Springs HS: .432-1-26

Round 9: Pick 20
Robbie Rogers (184th)

1/2* Potential, 20 years old, SP
Stuff: 5/7; Movement: 6/6; Control: 3/5
He can throw a lot of innings, but I am not sure he will have a bright future.
Sussex County CC: 16 GS 5-8 5.83, 1.75 WHIP

I noticed that everyone Alexis drafted was from NY or NJ. I will have to keep an eye on that for next year. Wonder if he has some crazy in-game NY/NJ ties.

Week 9 (2020)

Current Week: 6-1 (42-16 - GB (+10.5))
Next Week: 3 @ Balitmore Barons, 3 vs Salisbury Ports
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 88
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 311 (2nd)
Avg: .284 (1st)
HR: 76 (1st)
SB: 61 (1st)
Runs Against: 200 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.08 (1st)
Pen ERA: 3.95 (3rd)
Def Eff: .718 (1st)

Game 52: Norfolk 2, Dover 4
Matt Hollis (ND) took a tough ND, as he pitched well through 7, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 8. Rick Kelly (2-2) struggled through 1/3 of an inning, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk. The offense was lead by Francisco Reyes who had 2 hits and 2 RBI's, including a HR (15). The Cav's had 7 hits and left 7 men on.

Game 53: Norfolk 3, Dover 2
Antonio Ramirez (4-2) went 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run before trusthing the lead over to the bullpen. Dalton Whitaker gave up 1 run on 2 hits, but took home the save (15). John O'Donegan continued to hit the ball well, hitting a solo HR (5) and Francisco Reyes added a 2-run HR (16) for all the scoring the Cav's needed. Tonight the Cav's had 7 hits and left 5 men on.

Game 55: Norfolk 5, Dover 3
Vaughan Griffith (ND) took a tough ND, after throwing 6 innings of 1 run ball. He allowed 6 hits. Derek Carter (3-0, BS 2) gave up the tieing run, but was the benefactor of a 2-run 9th). Dalton Whitaker throw a perfect bottom of the 9th for the save (16). Francisco Reyes lead the offense with 2 hits and 2 runs, including a solo-HR (17). King Brock and Ed Duke both added 2 hits. Overall the Cav's had 10 hits and left 7 men on.

Transactions: Yann Gosselin is ready to be activated from the DL. To make room for him Sergio Galvez was sent down to AAA. Galvez was slumping (.213-3-13), which I think is because lack of playing time. He will be back up once he gets his swing going again.

Game 56: Norfolk 7, Washington 4
Armando Lopez (1-0) had a decent big-league debut going 5.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs, while walking 3 and striking out 5. Dalton Whitaker picked up the save with a shut-out 9th (17). King Brock lead the offense with 4 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI's, which included a 2-run HR (6). Maik Wassink added 3 hits. THe Cav's offense exploded for 16 hits, and they left 9 men on.

Game 57: Norfolk 10, Washington 7

Game 58: Norfolk 8, Washington 3
Arturo Ramirez (5-2) took home another V with 7 innings of 5 hit ball. He allowed 3 runs and struck out 4. Derek Carter and Rick Kelly closed out the game with shut-out ball. The offense waas lead by Francisco Reyes with 3 hits, including a 2-run HR (19), Javier Janchez hit a 2-run HR (3) and Ed Duke added a 2-run HR (6), as well. Augusto Rodriguez added 3 hits, one was solo-HR (4). The offense had double digit hits for the 4th straight game, with 13 today, and left 5 men on.

League News:
  • Steve Williams of the Newark Millers continues to struggle with injuries this year and will miss the next 4 months. Once one of the games top hitters, injuries have taken a toll, even at the age of 30. Williams will miss 4 months with torn ankle ligaments. One the season Williams was hitting .283-1-8
  • The Ellicott Express will be without 2B Dave McGill for the next 2 months.McGill has a sore elbow and was told to rest. McGill was off to a sluggish start hitting .219-9-21.
  • Gold Glove out-fielder Pablo Freitas of the Georgetown Sixteens will miss the next 3-4 weeks with a torn quad muscle. Pablo was having a solid season with the Sixteens hitting .303-7-22 on the early season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jorge Alonso (New Castle Colonials) 15-31, 2 HR's, 9 RBI's
MarVa: Francisco Reyes (Norfolk Cavaliers) 13-26, 5 HR's, 9 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (142.3)
2) Milford Clippers (109.4)
3) Baltimore Barons (104.1)
4) Dover Generals (103.2)
5) New Castle Colonials (102.3)

GM Notes:
Francisco Reyes has bounced back incredibily after a slow-slow start. He is now hitting .319-19-48. King Brock is hitting the ball well (.345-6-30), but not driving in as man runs as he has in the past. Then again he does have Reyes hitting in front of him. It might make sense to move Lewis to the #2 whole, Brock to the #3 and Reyes in the 4. Followed by Duke. Something to think about. The offense just seems to be hitting the ball really well right now, so I may not need to tinker with anything... Rick Kelly and Dan Nelson continue to struggle out of the pen. I shopped Kelly around, but there wasn't much interest. I may have to include someone else to pull off a deal. I may look to trade Ben Sanford, he is well liked around the leauge, but with a control of 5 (potential) I don't think I will have much use for him. Its always tough to trade your #1 picks though... Armando Lopez threw well his first game, but will need to get better, he faced a weak Senators team. This week he will face the Barons, which will give us a much better idea of what he has.

Draft Pick Negotiations:
Round 1: Pick 15 - Michael Russell (Demands: $1,500,000, Offer: $1,700,000)
Round 2: Pick 14 - Nathan Esparza (Signed 6/6: $430,000)
Round 3: Pick 20 - Ron Howard (Demands: $290,000, Offer: $290,000)
Round 4: Pick 20 - Maurice George (Singed 6/4: $180,000)
Round 5: Pick 20 - Paul Morrissey (Demands: $230,000, Offer: $215,000)

The Cav's collected 16 hits and left 11 men stranded.

Game 61: Norfolk 4, Baltimore 5
Armando Lopez (ND) threw the ball well over 5 innings, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs. He walked 3 and struck out 3. Dalton Whitaker (0-3) took the loss giving up a solo-HR in the 9th. The Cav's had 3 players with 2 hits, Kent Davis, Maik Wassink and Javier Janchez. John O'Donegan hit a 2-run HR (6). The Cav's picked up 9 hits and left 6 men on.

Game 62: Salisbury 5, Norfolk 2
Matt Hollis (10-2) took the loss, giving up 11 hits and 4 runs over 7.2 innings, while striking out 8. Mario Reyes and Kent Davis each collected 2 hits, and Ed Duke hit a 2-run HR (7). The Cav's managed 6 hits and left 4 men on.

Game 63: Salisbury 4, Norfolk 7
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 6.1 innings, allowing just 3 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk, Rick Kelly (3-2) picked up the win with 2/3 of relief. Dalton Whitaker picked up the save (19). Whitaker was the 6th reliever of the game, and not 1 reliever threw a complete inning. Jeff Lewis hit a 2-run HR (9) and scored 2 runs. Francisco REyes hit a 2-run HR (21). Mario Reyes added a PH 2-run single. The Cav's totalled 12 hits and left 7 men on.

Injury News: Luis Gonzalez left the game after throwing 3 pitches. Gonzalez has been lights out this year: 1-0 1.17 15.1 IP as my middle-man/lefty specialist. Hopefully we will hear some good news soon.

Game 64: Salisbury 5, Norfolk 6
Tatayuki Iemochi (9-1) went 8 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, while walking 5 and striking out 6. Rick Kelly went the 9th for the save (1). Jeff Lewis continued his hot week, adding 2 hits, including a solo-HR (10). Joe Chabmers drove in 2. Francisco Reyes and King Brock both scored 2 times. The Cav's only had 6 hits, and left 3 men on.

Transactions: Dan Nelson has been sent down to AAA to work on his stuff and hopefully find it. After a solid year last season 2-0 2.11, he has been unable to find the grove 1-2 7.71. WHIP: 1.41 vs 2.06... Coming up to replace Nelson is Lorenzo Reyes. Reyes signed a minor-league deal in the off-season, he hasn't been great in AAA (2-0 9.00), but we hope he finds a spark. He is on a short leash.

League News:
  • Peter Adams, the 35-year old starter for the Seaford Blue Jays, will miss the next 12 months with a torn flexor tendon. He was 3-4 2.99 in 12 starts this season.
  • Raul Gutierrez will be out another 2 weeks, with a bout of shoulder tendonitis. Raul is hitting .308-11-33 for the Salisbury Ports on the season.
  • Errol Williams of the Newark Millers will miss the next 4 months with a broken kneecap! Williams was hitting .272-7-34. He is hoping to play again this season.
  • The Newark Millers went the way of free-agency to find a replacement for Errol Williams, singing 31-year-old George Waller. George played lst season with the Georgetown Sixteens, hitting .281-9-65. The deal is worth $1,300,000.
  • Jarred Perry of the Lewes Braves has suffered a set-back during his rehab from an elbow strain. He is now set to miss 6 more weeks.
  • Tsuneo Sato, of the Washington Senators, is set to miss the next 4 months with a torn back muscle. Sato was 4-7 5.99 in 13 starts this season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jorge Alonso (New Castle Colonials) 9-19, 2 HR's, 7 RBI's
MarVa: Wayne Weaver (Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs) 12-27, 3 HR's, 4 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (137.4)
2) Milford Clippers (116.9)
3) New Castle Colonials (109.1)
4) Lewes Braves (108.6)
5) Ocean City Tourists (101.3)

GM Notes:
I keep looking at the DL and I see that Will Rose will be eligible to come off the DL in 4 weeks. Then 2 weeks in AAA (maybe more) then I will have another solid reliever, hopefully. It will be intersting to see how he bounces back after a year off... I got a little nervous when Takayuki Iemochi took a ratings dip, and Miguel got hurt, but it looks like Takayuki is still alright. he is just having an pretty great season. Going deep in games, and being that "guy" who eats innings for us... I am thinking about letting Ed Duke go, save me some money and allow John O and John P to hold down catching duties. I actually thought Duke was going to be around a lot longer, but defenisvely and offensively he and John O seem to be 'same'. I just don't see Duke hitting .300+ again. Not sure, I will have to see if there is a deal worth making... I am looking around for some bullpen help, but its been hard with the lack of budget space. Not to mention other teams and their lack of budget space. Just hard to make a trade in this enviornment right now, at least with the teams that I am interested in talking to.

Draft Pick Negotiations:

Game 65: Richmond 1, Norfolk 5
Vaughan Griffith (7-4) went 8.1 innings allowing just 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 8. Jeff Lewis with 3 hits and Yann Gosselin with 2, lead the offense. Kent Davis drove in 2. The Cav's had 11 hits and left 10 men on for the day.

Transactions: Mauro Candelaria is ready to come off the DL. He will be shipped off to AAA to get some swings and to prepare for his return.

Injury News: Luis Gonzalez is ok. Looks like he has some hamstring soreness and will need to rest for a day or 2, but nothing more than that. Phew.

Game 66: Richmond 12, Norfolk 0
Armando Lopez (1-1) didn't make it out of the first inning, only able to retire 2 batters, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits, he walked and struck out 1.

Trade Time: We pulled off a trade with the Virigina Beach Surf Dawgs today, sending 3 player to them for reliever Rafael Rodriguez. Rodriguez is a hard throwing lefty (99-101) with great stuff and pretty decent control. In return we sent them Emilio Gonzalez, youngster Alfred Aguirre and RP Dana Inman. We had bright hopes for Inman, but he lost favor over the years. Rodriguez was struggling with the Surf Dawgs this season going 1-3 with 10 saves and a 5.27 ERA. Stuff: 16/17, Movement: 11/12, Control: 10/10

Transactions: Rafael Rodriguez will join the Cavaliers in Milford and Lorenzo Reyes will be sent back down to AAA. Reyes pitched in 1 game allowing 2 runs in 3.1 innings. Lorenzo Reyes in his big league debut went 3.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. The offense couldn't get anything going, with the 7-8-9 hitters each getting 1 hit. For the Day the Cav's manged only 3 hits, and left 3 on.

Game 67: Norfolk 8, Milford 0
Matt Hollis (11-2) went all 9, allowing just 3 hits. Augusto Rodriguez lead the offense with 3 hits and 4 RBI's. Francisco Reyes added 3 hits. The offense bounched back with 13 hits, but left 9 men on.

Game 68: Norfolk 2, Milford 1
Arturo Ramirez (ND) took the no-decision, but had a great game, going 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 run, walking 2 and striking out 7. Derek Carter (4-0) took home the win with 1 inning of shut-out ball and Dalton Whitaker the save (20). King Brock hit a solo-HR (8) in the 6th and scored the winning run in the top of the 9th on a Jeff Lewis single, his 3rd hit of the day. The Cav's had 8 hits and left 4 men stranded.

Game 69: Norfolk 3, Milford 1
Takayuki Iemochi (10-1) went 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, striking out 7. Dalton Whitaker picked up the save (21). Jeff Lewis lead the offense with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Francisco Reyes went 1-1, with a walk, sac-fly and HBP. The Cav's had 7 htis and left 7 men on.

Game 70: Norfolk 9, Milford 2
Vaughan Griffith (8-4) went 6.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, striking out 5 for the win. Rafael Rodriguez went 2 innings and struck out 3 in his first Cavaliers performance. Kent Davis lead the offense with 2 hits and RBI's, Augusto Rodiriguez drove in and scored 2. Yann Gossline hit a PH solo-HR (8). The Cav's had 9 hits on the day and left 4 men on.

League News:
  • John Hunt, a reliever for Christiana Blue Hens, will miss the next 7 months with shoulder inflammation. Hunt ws 1-6 4.66 in 19 games this season.
  • The oft-injured George Corbett signed a one-year extension with the Wilmington Iron Pigs. The 31-year old agreed to 8 million less than he currently makes. One the season Corbett is hitting .413-3-10 in 46 AB's.
  • Rob Evans of the Wilmington Iron Pigs will be out for the rest of the season and then some. He won't be able to resume baseball activities for 6 months due to shoulder inflammation.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Miguel Ortega (Seaford Blue Jays) 15-29, 0 HR's, 2 RBI's
MarVa: Mike Taylor (Baltimore Barons) 10-25, 4 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (139.1)
2) New Castle Colonials (117.0)
3) Lewes Braves (106.7)
4) Ocean City Tourists (104.5)
5) Wilmington Iron Pigs (104.5)

GM Notes:
Armando Lopez will get another start and depending on how it goes will get another one or will be shipped down to AAA and Paul Brown will come up for a couple of starts. Lopez really seemed over matched last game against the Cardinals... I have something to think about with Mauro ready to come off the DL (.350-0-2 5 Games). Joe Chambers has played well (.265-6-22) and Maik Wassink has been solid (.294-4-18). Mario Reyes (.231-2-15) will probably be the odd man out and sent back down, but what to do with Mauro. Start him? For who? It will be a tough choice. Maybe platoon all 3? Something to think about Mauro is ready to join the team... I almost dealt Ben Sanford, but was able to hold on to him. I am going to end up bringing him up for some time this year. I have to see what he has, his "5" (out of 20) control really bothers me, but I don't know what he has till I see it. He has had a decent minor league career 26-29 3.52, 215 Games, 1.32 WHIP... Ed Duke is 27, going to be due 8-9 million next year via Arbitration. He is having an awful year, so I am going to keep my eye out. If he warms up, time to shop. I am setting him to available.

Draft Pick Negotiations:
Round 1: Pick 15 - Michael Russel (Signed 6/14: $1,700,000)
Round 2: Pick 14 - Nathan Esparza (Signed 6/6: $430,000)

Transactions: Mauro Candelaria was called up from AAA after a 5-game rehab assignment. Mario Reyes was demoted to make room from him on the active roster. Candy will assume second base duties with Wassink coming off the bench. Wassink will also assume back-up SS duties. I will keep an eye on Joe Chambers and will move Candy, Wassink and Chambers around based on who is hot.

Game 71: Norfolk 7, Salisbury 3
Armando Lopez (ND) bounced back from his last start, going 5.1 innings, allowing just 3 runs on 5 hits, but he did walk 6. Rick Kelly (4-2) took home the win with 2 innings of shut-out relief. Ramon Granados, replacing an injured Javier Janchez, lead the offense with a 3-5 day with 4 RBI's, including a HR (5). Yann Gosselin hit a solo-HR (9). Ed Duke stroked two hits and scored 2 times, he must of heard his name hit the trading wire. The Cav's had 10 hits total, and left 8 me on.

Game 72: Norfolk 4, Salisbury 1
Matt Hollis (12-2) went 7.2 innings, allowing just 1 run, on 5 hits, while striking out 13. Dalton Whitaker closed teh door for the save (22). Jeff Lewis hit a solo-HR (11), Yann Gosselin hit a 2-run HR (10) and Ed Duke added a solo-shot (8). The Cav's had 7 hits in all, leaving 5 men on.

Injury News: We got some bad news today, as we have found out that Javier Janchez will miss 5 weeks with a torn ligament in his thumb. Janchez was hitting .241-3-20 on the season. Janchez is starting to get a reputation as an injury prone player. Sergio Galvez will get recalled to take the roster slot. Sergio is tearing it up in AAA (.338-3-13, 18G).

Game 73: Norfolk 8, Richmond 4
Arturo Ramirez (ND) took a tough ND, going 6 innings, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs, as the Cav's scored 5 in the final 2 frames. Rafael Ramirez (2-3) took home the win with 2.2 innings of shut-out relief. Augusto Rodriguez lead the offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI's, including a HR (5). Jeff Lewis added 3 hits. The Cav's final tally was 14 hits and 10 men left on.

Game 74: Norfolk 4, Richmond 3
Takayuki Iemochi (11-1) went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and a walk, while striking out only 2. Dalton Whitaker closed the door for the save (23). King Brock powered the offense with 2 hits, both 2-run HR's (10), driving in all 4 Cav's runs. Ed Duke and Jeff Lewis each had 2 hits. For the game the Cav's had 7 hits and didn't leave any one. The Cav's turned 4 double plays.

Game 75: Norfolk 11, Richmond 0
Vaughan Griffith (9-4) continued to stay hot, with 7.1 innings of shut-out ball, walking 4 and striking out 7. John O'Donegan hit a 3-run HR (7) and ended the day with 4 RBI's. Ramon Granados added 3 hits and 2 runs, Mauro Candelaria added 3 hits. The offense had 14 total hits and left 11 men on.

League News:
SS Morris Sinclair (.297-13-38) ws traded form the Dover Generals to the Washington Senators in exchange for 1B Armando Leyva (.24-5-27) and a minor leaguer

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jose Escamilla (Milford Clippers) 9-18, 2 HR's, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Lou Jones (Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs) 9-21, 8 HR's, 12 RBI's
** Lou has 9 HR's in 75 AB's on the season

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (151.4)
2) New Castle Colonials (111.0)
3) Dover Generals (104.7)
4) Wilmington Iron Pigs (103.4)
5) Ocean City Tourists (100.3)

GM Notes:
Armando Lopez will get one more start then be sent back down to AAA, as Miguel Contreras is ready to come off the DL. Even though Miguel was out a month, I am going to place him in the rotation. He will be better than Lopez even on a bad day... Will Rose only has 1-2 weeks before he comes back. Seems like he has been on the DL forever. Its been a long year and we are excited to get him back... Rafael Rodriguez has been a great addition so far. Not allowing a run in 6 innings of work... This team is playing extremely well, and oddly enough I am still not sold that we are this good. The pitching is just so dominate it makes the offense better. I keep looking at this roster and checking out who I have signed and who I have coming up, and it will be another busy off-season. I have to make room financially for the younger guns. Ed Duke will most likely get moved, leaving me with John O and John P as my catchers. I think they will be able to do a better job for much less money. And Francisco Reyes will have to get dumped. This will be a tough trade due to the $19M he is due for the next 2 years. I will also look into moving one of my other outfielders, most likely Kent Davis. If I move all 3, Davis, Duke and Reyes, that will free up over $35M. And in the end, I don't think we will be worse off. This team is built to last with a deep minor league system. It will also give me some hope that I can sign some of these young kids and keep them around longer, not to mention having money for Hollis and/or Contreras when their contracts come to an end in 2-3 years.

June in Review (2020)

Delaware Conference Monthly Awards

DE Conference Batter of the Month Honors to Peters: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old Peter Peters put together a solid offensive month for New Castle and was crowned June's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .380 with 9 home runs, 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored. This year Peters is batting .306 with 81 hits, 17 home runs, 53 RBIs, 68 walks, .448 OBP and has scored 55 runs.

Matos Tabbed as June's Starter of the Month: José Matos's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 3-0 in June, the 33-year-old Milford hurler has been named Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 33 in 36.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.24 and allowed opponents to hit .197 against him. This year Matos has compiled a 6-3 mark with a 1.51 ERA in 16 starts.

DE Conference Selects Rookie Star of the Month: José Díaz is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In June the Seaford hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .275 average with 28 hits, 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. For the year Díaz is hitting .258 with 2 home runs. His stats include 13 RBI and 18 runs scored.

MarVa Conference Monthly Awards

Jones Crowned Top MarVa Conf Hitter in June: There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Lou Jones helped his contract negotiations by nabbing June's MarVa Conference Batter of the Month honors. The Virginia Beach first baseman put together a .378 batting average with 10 home runs, 19 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Jones continues at this brisk pace. For the year Jones is batting .378 with 31 hits and 10 home runs. He has scored 17 times and driven in 19.

Iemochi MarVa Conf Winner, Top Hurler in June: Over the past month Takayuki Iemochi has turned quite a few heads. He's young, talented and able to pitch with the established arms in the MarVa Conference. He proved all that and now he's been named June's Pitcher of the Month. The rookie for the Norfolk Cavaliers posted 5-0 mark and a 2.02 ERA. In 5 starts he tossed 40 innings, permitted 28 hits and fanned 26 batters. This season Iemochi has compiled a 11-1 mark with a 3.20 ERA.

Joe Stone Captures Rookie of Month: June was a very good month for Joe Stone. The right fielder for the Ocean City Tourists was named the best newcomer in the MarVa Conference. He captured the honor by hitting .459 in 23 games with 28 hits, 2 home runs and 20 RBIs. Currently Stone is batting .324 with 3 home runs and 24 RBIs.

MarVa Conference League Leaders

Standings as of July 1st 2020

The Dover Generals and the Lewes Braves are in a battle and with Dover missing their #2 for the next month, this could open the door for the Braves, who just happen to be missing their #1. The rest of the division has an golden opportunity to make a move.

The New Castle Colonials, lost one of the games best starters to free agency, then his replacement to injury, yet continue to win. The rest of the division is hanging, and I wouldn't count any of them out just yet. This could be a really fun race.

The Eastern Division looks to be reverting back to the good ole days, when 3 team races were the regular, but this year they have four teams battling or the top spot! This is a "pick-em" Division right now. I am rooting for the Barons, but really I just don't want Annapolis to win again.

The Cavaliers have turned things around after a rocky first month and are in dominating phase right now. We survived the loss of Contreras and now we try to stay healthy and see what happens.

Norfolk in Review - June 2020

You just can't say enough about this teams staff. Even without Contreras for the month this group of guys didn't miss a beat. A couple of changes with the demotion of Dan Nelson and the trade for Rafeal Rodriguez only made them better. I am hoping Dan can get his control down, because I will need him, if not this year then next.

Will Rose will be returning in a week or two. I am looking forward to getting him down in AAA and throwing again. If he is good, then Rick Kelly may be getting moved. Both of these guys are free-agents at the end of the year, so a dump of both isn't out of the question either.

Gosselin has struggled and will probably get few AB's this coming month. Chambers had a cool month. Candelaria came off the DL with a bang. Kent Davis isn't the hitter he once was.

I am going to have to do some lineup tinkering. Galvez will get some more swings, Goselin will lose a few, and I will have to see what is going on with Wassink and Chambers, both struggled in June hitting wise.

It is clear that Reyes, Brock and Lewis are the offensive heart of this team.

Even though this team is putting up great offensive numbers, make no mistake that pitching and defense carry this team. I am surprised to see the offensive numbers as high as they are, I think this is a tribute to how weak the "weaker" teams are.

I am just glad that we are playing good ball, after the first month of the season I was ready to blow things up. Guess its good to be patient at times.

Some Draft news:
Our #1 pick Michael Russell is off to a slow start hitting .212-2-7 in his first 13 games down in A-ball. Our #2 pick Nathan Esparza isn't doing that much better hitting .235-0-5 in 19 games. Looking at our #1 from last year Mark Botlon, he seems to hitting the ball ok this year, hitting .276-5-34 on the season (59 games). He has throwing out, a pretty decent, 34.8% of attempted ase runners and has a .989 FPCT. The biggest down fall about Mark is he is 22 years-old and still in A-ball. I'd like to see him start moving up the chain, he should be in AA by the end of this season. His development could mean some time with the Cav's next year, if Duke gets moved.

Armando Lopez (2-1) threw 8.1 solid innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs, before giving way to Dalton Whitaker. Whitaker picked up the final 2 outs for the save (24). Mauro Candelaria seems to like hitting out of the #7 hole, today he went 2-3 with 3 runs and an RIB, including a HR (2). Augusto Rodriguez colletd 3 hits and 2 RBI's to pace the offense. The Cav's had 9 hits on the day and left 5 men on.

** End of June **

League News: International free-agents hit the market today, and due to me spending so much last season on Intl FA's and having no money available in the bank. I will not be able to sign any of the kids.

Transactions: Miguel Contreras is ready to come of the DL. He will be placed on the active roster and Armando Lopez will shipped back down to AAA. Lopez went 2-1 7.20 in 5 starts with the Cavaliers. Contrears is scheduled to pitch the next game against the Blue Hens.

Game 78: Christiana 4, Norfolk 2
Miguel Contreras (6-2) shouled little dust in his return from teh DL, going 7.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs (3 ER). The offense just couldn't give him any support. Jeff Lewis lead the offense with 3 hits and 2 RBI's. On the day the offense only managed 6 hits and left 5 runners on.

Game 79: Christiana 2, Norfolk 4 (10 innings)
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 7. Derek Carter (5-0) took home the W going the final 1.2 innings. Jeff Lewis added 3 more hits. King Brock hit a 2-run HR (11) and Maruo Candelaria had 2 hits. One the day the offense could only manage 7 hits and left 5 men on.

Game 80: Washington 2, Norfolk 9
Takayuki Iemochi (12-1) scattered 11 hits over 8.1 innings, giving up only 2 runs and striking out 3. Joe Chambers was the offensiv hero with 3 hits and 5 RBI's. Jeff Lewis had another 3-hit day. The offense finaly work up and colletcted 14 hits, leaving only 4 men on.

Game 81: Washington 3, Norfolk 4 (10 innings)
Vaughan Griffith (ND) went 5.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs. He added 7 walks and 6 K's. Dalton Whitaker (1-3) threw the final 2 innings, striking out 6 for the win. Yann Gosselin lead the offense with 3 hits and 2 runs, including a walk-off-shot (12) in the 10th. Francisco Reyes finally hit another HR (22) a solo-shot in the 6th. The Cav's collected 14 hits and left 7 on.

Injury Report: Kent Davis is out with an oblique strain and will miss 1-2 weeks. Davis will be sent to the DL and Ramon Granados will take over CF while he is out. RP Ivan Pineda has been called up to take the roster slot. I may need to add another outfielder to the roster. I will have to watch and see what happens.

Game 82: Washington 2, Norfolk 8
Matt Hollis (14-2) went 8.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 13. King Brock paced the offense with 2 hits, a HR (12) and double, and drove in 3. Jeff Lewis had 2 hits ans scored 2 times. The Cavaliers picked up 10 hits and left 5 men on.

League News:
  • Tony Garcia of the Dover Generals will miss the next 3-4 weeks after leaving yesterdays game with arm soreness. The official diagnosis is forearm tendinitis. Garcia is 5-4 3.44 in 16 starts this year.
  • Petere Peters of the New Castle Colonials had his hitting streak snapped at 21 games.
  • Jarred Perry the ace of the Lewes Braves suffered a set-back from his elbow injury. Instead of getting better, it took a step back. He is expected to miss a minimum of 6 weeks depending on how he reacts to treatment.
  • The Dover Generals signed starting pitcher Miguel Bravo to a prorated $1,490,000 contract for the rest of this year. Bravo was 10-12 4.42 in 26 starts last season in Ocean City.
  • Cliff Jones of the Chesapeake Blue Crabs extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the first.
  • The Seaford Blue Jays shipped Brian Cline (.241-8-25) to the Salisbury Ports for 2B Tsuginori Ichikawa (.267-12-40). I am surprised Cline hasn't stayed anywhere for longer than 2 seasons. He is an above average fielder with decent power.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Doug Dook (New Castle Colonials) 10-24, 5 HR's, 9 RBI's
MarVa: Reynaldo Peralta (Ellicott City Express) 9-21, 3 HR's, 9 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (148.1)
2) Newark Millers (113.2)
3) New Castle Colonials (111.6)
4) Lewes Braves (110.9)
5) Baltimore Barons (107.6)

GM Notes:
I am going to try to move Kent Davis before the trade deadline. The problem with that is I may have to take a little less than I had hoped for. Davis has lost some of his 'contact' rating and it seems to be really effecting him. He just isn't the same hitter he was in the past. Problem with trading Davis? He is very well known and unless I make the move for someone in the same realm he our fan base won't be happy... Before Davis got hurt I was shopping him and his $10M contract around, looking for prospects. I tried 5 times and not one can afford that kind of contract. I am guessing I am going to run into a lot of trouble trying to move anyone right now. Time to find a "free-agent" to be and pull something off that way... Miguel Contreras threw a pretty good game, but the Blue Hens pitchers just handcuffed our offense all series. I am glad he is back and I look forward to a wonderful 2nd half... We finally got a W in an extra-inning game, we pulled off two this week. After losing our first 6 on the season. I think the bullpen is just getting better as the season progresses... One more week till the All-Star break, it will be nice to get there, marking the 1/2 way point of the season. The team is playing well, so hopefully this won't slow us down.

** This was our first time facing Don Sweetapple this season. He holds a special spot in the hearts of the Cavaliers and their fans. It good to see him having yet another solid season.

Transactions: After missing 13 months with a damaged elbow ligament, Will Rose is ready to throw the baseball again. Rose has been sent down to AAA and will begin his comeback. A hard-throwing lefty, it will be interesting to see how he bounces back from missing so long.

Game 86: Norfolk 1, Chesapeake 7
Vaughan Griffith (9-5) had a rough outing, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. He did strike out 8. The offense was quite, with Ramon Granados the only Cav with more than 1 hit, he had 2. On the day the Cav's only had 6 hits, but left 9 men on.

Injury News: He is at it again, Mauro Candelaria, once an iron man, is battling injuries yet again. He will be sent to the DL for the 2nd time this season. This time around an oblique strain will cause him to miss 5 weeks. Candy is hitting .345-2-12 on the season. Mario Reyes will be recalled from AAA to take his roster slot. Reyes and Wassink will play 2B in his absence.

Ramon Granados and Francisco Reyes each had 3 hits, Reyes went deep (27) in the 11th. The Cav's had 17 hits in all, leaving a whopping 15 men on.

League News:
  • Looking for starting rotation help, the New Castle Colonials acquired Andres Gonzalez (4-9 6.11, 17GS) from the Seaford Blue Jays for Julio Romero (.234-2-10) and a minor leaguer.
  • The Christiana Blue Hens will be without the services of 2B Jorge Quintero thanks to an oblique strain. Quintero was hitting .250-6-22 at the time of the injury.
  • Anastasio Padno will miss 2 weeks with a herniated disc. Padno is hitting .246-12-33 this season.
  • Cliff Jones had his 24-game hitting streak come to an end.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Stan Miller (Georgetown Sixteens) 14-26, 5 HR's, 17 RBI's
MarVa: Francisco Reyes (Norfolk Cavaliers) 11-24, 5 Hr's, 11 RBI's

1) Norfolk Cavaliers (143.0)
2) Newark Millers (112.5)
3) New Castle Colonials (111.4)
4) Ocean City Tourists (104.3)
5) Baltimore Barons (104.1)

GM Notes:
Miguel Contreras had two solid starts this week and took home two no decisions. In my time here in Norfolk it seems like he has been the king of ND's. Wasn't it two or three years ago he had 7 QS's and only won one game. He just has some bad luck with this bunch of guys. Goes back to how inconsistent this offense has been... I hate to see Candelaria keep getting hurt, I have a 'bond' with Candy and it will be hard for me to let him go, but with 3 more seasons left (the 3rd is a player option) I may have to move him, or at least . He is a gamer, and its hard to see him fall apart like he is... Francisco Reyes was slumping going into last week. Seems like most of the offense went quiet for a little while. But when Reyes is hitting, we can win any game, when he isn't our offense struggles... I have been getting a lot of BAD trade proposals for players like Ramon Granados and/or Arturo Ramirez. Two guys I am not going to move, especially for a minor leaguer. I don't know what these GM's are thinking. Will Rose was asked about, but I am not ready to move him just yet. I'd like to resign him, but I know that is going to be tough.

2020 All-Star Game

DBL News: The All-Star Game Rosters Have Been Announced
What's the best league? The Delaware Conference or the MarVa Conference? The answer will be found in the DELMARVA Baseball League All-Star Game. All the votes have been counted and tabulated, all the players have been selected, and they will decide the question on the baseball diamond.

The MarVa Conference may end up winning the championships, but when you put the best players on the field and dook it out, the Delaware Conference rules the roost. This marks the 8th All-Star game in DBL history and the MarVa Conference only has one win to show for it, back in 2015.

All-Star Game History:
2013: MarVa 5, Delaware 6
2014: Delaware 6, MarVa 5
2015: MarVa 7, Delaware 1
2016: Delaware 8, MarVa 3
2017: Delaware 5, MarVa 3
2018: MarVa 1, Delaware 3
2019: Delaware 6, MarVa 5

The Delaware Conference has never given up from back-to-back late inning heroics in the first two games to last years, top of the 9th game winning HR. These games have always been good battles and fun to watch and this year shouldn't be much different.

Here are the rosters for the upcoming annual DelMarVa Baseball League All-Star game.

Norfolk Cavaliers - 2020 All-Stars

The Cavaliers are sending 8 players to the All-Star game for the second time in 3 years. The biggest shock to me is that we are sending 4 from our starting rotation, and six pitchers total. Miguel Contreras was named to the All-Star team despite missing 5 weeks with a strained hamstring, that was surprise to me, I figured he would be left off this year.

Not that I think 8 All-Stars isn't enough, but looking over the roster I think King Brock was snubbed. Brock is hitting .325-13-50 and playing solid D at 1B (after spending 3 years as a DH only). But that being said 1B is a tough position, especially when your own teammate Francisco Reyes, who now plays LF, is your main competition.

I took a look back at the previous years in Cavaliers All-Star history and there hasn't been a whole a lot of positives. 2013 Pablo Freitas had 3 hits and in 2019 Ed Duke went deep, and those have really been the highlights over the years.

Dalton Whitaker took the loss in 2017 and blew a save in 2019, and sadly both efforts seemed to have an ill effect on his 2nd have. Maybe this will be his year.

2013
Mauro Candelaria (0-7)
Pablo Freitas (3-6, 1 Run)
Don Sweetapple (1.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER/R, 1 K)
Alberto Hernandez (1.0)

Don Sweetapple (1 IP 0 H, 2 K, 11 Pitches, 10 Strikes)
Ron Harris (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K) (Gave up the HR to Salinas in the 3rd)
Carlos Rodriquez (DNP/Injured)

2015
Roberto Perez (0-2, run and a walk)
Tony Soto (0-2)
Don Sweetapple (1 IP, 1 H, 1K)
Karl Armstrong (1 P, 1 BB, 1K)
Carlos Mateo (1 IP, 2 K)
Carlos Rodriguez (1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K)

2016
Roberto Perez (0-3)
Kent Davis (0-3 1 K)
Pablo Fretias (0-1)
Jose Rodriqeuz (0-1)
Don Sweetapple (2 IP 4 hits 3 runs (1 ER) 2 K's)
Jose Matos (1 IP 1 hit 1 K) (7 pitches 5 strikes)
Carlos Mateo (1 IP 1 hit 1 K) (7 pitches 6 strikes)

2018

Miguel Contreras (2 IP, 2 H, 1 K)

2020 All-Star Game

The Delaware All-Stars did it again, as they continue to own the mid-season classic. The MarVa All-Stars jumped out ahead, fell behind, fought back, but they just didn't have enough to keep the Delaware All-Stars at bay. Timely hitting and walks, lead to a big victory for the Delaware All-Stars.

How they Scored:
MarVa, Top 1:

Jeff Lewis lead the game off with a grounder to second and reached second base on a fielding error by the second-baseman (Pedro Galvan). Went to third on a single to left, scored when Francsico Reyes hit into a 6-4-3 DP. Giving the MarVa Conf the lead 1-0

Delaware, Bot 2:
Pedro Rivera walked Andy Kohl and Claude Bond to start the inning. Sanho Busones singled to load the bases. Rivera then struck out Stan Miller, got John Bean to ground into a 1-2 force out, then walked Bill Moore to score Claude Bond on a 3-2 count. Tying the game at 1.

MarVa, Top 3:
MarVa bounced right back, with a lead-off walk to Cliff Jones, by new pitcher Ron Reilly. Jones went to third on a double by Francisco Reyes. Two batters later Jones scored on a ground-out to the short stop. Giving the MarVa Conference a 2-1 lead.

Delaware, Bot 3:
Takayuki Iemochi took over on the bump and after giving up a single to Pete MacCammon retired the next two hitters. Then Claude Bond singeld, moving Andy Kohl (reached on a FC) to second. Sanho Busones, then stroked a single up the middle, socring Kohl. Stan Miller then walked to load the bases, followed by another walk, this one to John Bean, which scored Bond. Then Iemochi retired Jorge Alonso to get out of the inning. 2 hits, 2 walks, 3 left on, but the Delaware Conference took the lead 3-2.

MarVa, Top 4:
The MarVa Conference just wouldn't give up, fighting back off of new pitcher Luis Trevino. Derek Cambpell singled to left, moved to second on a walk. Then came home ona Glenn Jenkins singled to right. Jeff Lewis struck out, and Cliff Jones hit into an inning ending 4-6-3. An opportunity lost for the MarVa Conference, but they were able to tie it up at 3.

MarVa, Top 6:
Looking for the lead the Derek Campbell got things started off for the MarVa Conference with a first pitch single. After a pop out and a walk to Roberto Perez, MarVa had 2 runners on and were threatening. Kiyonobu Matsuura riped a double down the left-field line scoring both Campbell and Perez. After a strike out, for the 2nd out of the inning, Matsuura would score on a Mike Taylor single. MarVa took the lead with a big inning, up by 3, 6-3.

Delaware, Bot 6:
Bruce Robertson got the inning off with a great at-bat, stroking a single to left on the 12th pitch he saw. Bruce moved to second on a Peter Peters single, then would score on a Andy Kohl single into left. On the throw home, Peters would move up to third, and Kohl to second. Claude Bond would ground out to short, scoring Peters and advancing Kohl. Norfolk's own Arutro Ramirez would come in to take over and would be greated with a Sanho Busones single to right, scoring Kohl. Stan Miller would go down swinging, then John Bean would deliver a 2-run HR over the left field wall. Ramirez would give up a double, then be replaced by teammate Derek Carter, who was brought in to get out of the inning, which he did. But after the dust settled the Delaware Conference took the lead 8-6, scoring 5 runs. The last runs scored of the game.

W: Arturo Herrera (2/3 IP, 1 H, 1K)
L: Arturo Ramirez (1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R)
S: Manuel Pertrelia (1 IP, 1 K)
HR: John Bean (DEL)

Game MVP: Sanho Busones (Dover Generals) 4-5, 1 R, 2 RBI

The Cavaliers (All-Star appearances in parens):
(5) Jeff Lewis - 0-3, 1 Run
(7) Francisco Reyes - 2-3
(1) Takayuki Iemochi - 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K
(2) Matt Hollis - 1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K
(3) Arturo Ramirez - 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 K
(1) Derek Carter - 1 IP, 1 H

Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 502 (2nd)
Avg: .280 (2nd)
HR: 119 (1st)
SB: 94 (1st)
Runs Against: 307 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.08 (1st)

** All Star Break **

Game 89: Newark 3, Norfolk 4
Vaughan Griffith (10-5) went 6.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 7 and gave up 2 HR's. Dalton Whitaker threw a shakey 9th for the save (26). Ed Duke and Jeff Lewis each had 2 hits and Augusto Rodriguez drove in 2. The Cav's had 9 total hits and left 7 men on.

Game 90: Newark 1, Norfolk 10
Miguel Contreras (7-2) took home the W with 7 innings of 3 hit ball. He allowed 1 unearned run and struck out 6. Kent Davis and Sergio Gavlez each had 3 hits and Ed Duke added 2 hits and 3 RBI's. On the day the Cav's had 11 hits and left 5 men on.

Game 91: Newark 2, Norfolk 6
Matt Hollis (16-2) brought his A-game today, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, and striking out a record 16. The offense brought the power game with Ramon Granados (7), Jeff Lewis (12), King Brock (14) and Francisco Reyes (28) all going deep. Brock lead the way with 3 RBI's. The Cav's had 7 total hits, and left only 4 on.

A Record Falls:
Matt Hollis set a DelMarVa League Baseball record for most strikeouts in a game. He broke the MarVa Conference record of 14, set last year by Tommy Rutledge, as well as breaking the All-Time record, which he set in 2018 for the New Castle Colonials, when he struck out 15.

"He made a lot of good pitches out there," the Newark manager said. "He made some of our guys look bad. We didn't help matters by swinging at everything, but we really have to give him credit -- he didn't make many mistakes."

Game 92: Newark 4, Norfolk 2
Augusto Ramirez (6-3) went 5.1 innings, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs (3 ER), while striking out 4. The offense was held at bay, managing only 6 hits, with Jeff Lewis and Francisco Reyes collecting 2 each. Sergo Galvez (6) and Reyes (29) both hit solo HR's. Total of 6 hits and 6 men left on.

Team News: Jeff Lewis extended his hit streak to 25 games with 2-4 performance.

League News:
  • All-Star Andres Salinas was injured on the final day before the off-day and will miss the next two months with a herniated disc. Salinas is hitting .295-19-60 on the season.
  • Hermino Bovay of the Ellicott City Express extended his hit streak to 20 games with a 1-5 performance against the Lewes Braves

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jose Rodriguez (Christiana Blue Hens) 9-16, 2 HR's, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Miguel Ruiz (Ocean City Tourists) 10-16, 4 HR's, 11 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (138.0)
2) New Castle Colonials (122.5)
3) Ocean City Tourists (115.9)
4) Dover Generals (110.9)
5) Wilmington Iron Pigs (106.9)

GM Notes:
I tried to pull off a deal today for Tommy Rutledge a 25-year old top of the line pitcher. But the Barons were just asking for way too much. Along with Rutledge, who is signed for 2 more years, I would of received back-up short-stop, for salary reasons, and sent Baltimore Kent Davis, Ed Duke, Cody Johnson and either Aurturo Ramirez or Vaughan Griffith. The slumping Davis isn't helping his trade value at all. A career .337 hitter, Davis is only hitting .284 this season. Only 11 more days to go till the trade deadline is upon us. I did "shop around" Kent Davis, but no one is willing to go one-for-one. Davis is signed for 6 more years, yes this was a crazy contract but when I signed him to 10 years he hadn't hit under .350 and collected 250 hits for 3 straight years. Maybe he will bounce back... I may have to revisit this deal before the end of July. If I am bringing back a #2/3 pitcher, and I am trading away to contract burdens, maybe giving up my #3 will work. I do have 2 other guys on the farm that will be big-league ready next season. Something to sleep on... I may have to go back to the Barons and discuss this deal, I think I could give up Ramirez eventhough he is our first #1 draft pick and sort of "bonded" to me and the team. I enjoy having those type of guys around. But my guess is before too long he will be too costly and his 7 stamina will catch up to him, not to mention his fragile injury rating. I just feel I should get a little more back in return, draft pick? Prospect? Hmm...

The talks with the Barons have heated up some and here is the latest deal:
Sending to Baltimore:
Kent Davis: Current Salary: $10,560,000, Signed for 5 more seasons @ $10,560,000 (30 yrs old)
Ed Duke: Current Salary: $6,960,000, Arbitration 2021, est: $8,800,000 (27 yrs old)
Arturo Ramriez: Current Salary: $490,000, Arbitration 2021, est $6,875,000 (25 yrs old)
Cody Johnson: Current Salary: $950,000 / Free Agent End of Season
Rick Kelly: Current Salary: $2,030,000 / Free Agent End of Season

Return from Baltimore:
Tommy Rutledge: Current Salary: $8,500,000, Signed for 2 more years $9.5M & $10M (26 yrs old)
Pedro Morin: Current Salary: $9,500,000 / Free Agent End of Season (35 yrs old)
Gariel Santos: Current Salary: $490,000 / Not yet eligible for Arb (25 yrs old)
Domingo Cardoza: Minor Leauge, #29 Prospect in DBL
2nd-Round Draft Pick in 2021

Then in the off-season if I move Francisco Reyes, I will have some kind of budget to work with. Being strapped and $12 million in the hole has made it hard to move pieces here and there. I will still be strapped this year, but in the end I think it could work out. Its a huge deal to make mid-season one that will boost the Barons and help us financially... The Barons GM is thinking about it... so am I. I still have some time to say "no". Maybe wait till the off-season to pull of a huge deal, why ruin a good thing? Its not every day you can get a #2 starter and a top prospect... Maybe I should wait...
