Bracket E - Preview

1 - Mark McGwire - Big Mac hit 583 home runs in real life, and 672 in the original, 405 in the sequel, and 695 in round three. McGwire hit 26 in round two. He's one guy that I just have to root against.

2 - Willie McCovey - McCovey hit 521 home runs in real life, 572 in the original, and 591 in round three. He hit an impressive 41 in round two.

3 - Frank Thomas - hit 521 home runs in real life, 514 in the sequel, and 557 in round three. He should be one to watch, although he hit a very disappointing 16 in round two after getting a bye. He could be in for an early exit if that wasn't a fluke.

4 - Clarence Kraft - Kraft hit 255 minor league home runs, including a Texas League record 167, but never hit a home run in the majors. His inflated total of 1163 caused him to be seeded high, and he has hit 32 in round two.

5 - Todd Helton - 354 home runs in real life and he qualified with 473 in the sequel and 486 in round four. He's started off with 25 in round two after a bye.

6 - Prince Fielder - has hit 260 home runs so far in real life, and hit 429 in the original with an even better 582 in round four. Fielder did have a disappointing round two with just 19 home runs though.

7 - Alfonso Soriano - has hit 372 home runs in real life and should get to 400. Soriano qualified with 565 in the sequel and has hit 27 and 21 in rounds one and two so far.

8 - Boog Powell - hit 339 home runs in real life and qualified with 510 home runs in round three. Hit 33 in round one and 30 in round two.

9 - Eric Davis - Davis hit 282 home runs in real life and qualified with 544 in round three. As one of my favorite players growing up I'd like to see him do well, but with totals of 22 and 17 I don't expect it.

10 - Willie Aikens - Aikens was great in round two hitting 651 home runs, but hit just 110 home runs in real life. He surprised with decent totals in round one (27) and round two (25).

11 - Bobby Murcer - hit 252 home runs in real life and qualified by winning the play-in round. Hit 32 in round one and 30 in round two.

12 - Ken Phelps - for a player with 133 home runs in real life Phelps has been pretty consistent hitting 423 in the sequel and 433 in round three. Phelps got a bye in round one and hit 37 in round two.

13 - Brady Anderson - hit 210 home runs in real life and qualified through the play-in round. Hit 32 in round one and 28 in round two.

14 - Jason Kubel - 134 home runs in real life with 418 in round four. Hit 26 in round one, but his round two total of 17 points to an early exit.

15 - Carlos Beltran - with 334 home runs in real life so far, Beltran got in the tournament through the play-in round and hit 28 in round one and 21 in round two.

16 - Davey Johnson - 136 home runs in real life, Johnson qualified through the play-in round. Johnson has hit 29 in round one and 26 in round two.

1 - Jim Thome - Thome hit 612 home runs in real life, and 855 in rounds three. Thome also had some success in round four with 451 and started the tournament off with 38 in round two.

2 - Jimmie Foxx - Foxx hit 534 home runs in real life, and 537 in the original. Foxx also had success in round three with 663 home runs and hit 30 in round two after getting a bye in round 1.

3 - Eddie Murray - Steady Eddie hit 504 home runs in real life, 403 in the original, 412 in the sequel, and 573 in round three. He didn't appear in round four, but he's been consistent throughout. Murray hit 22 home runs in round two after a bye.

4 - Lou Gehrig - Gehrig hit 493 home runs in real life, and 482 in the original with 508 in round three. Gehrig earned a bye and hit 34 in round two. He's one of the guys that I'd like to see have some success as he is one of my favorite players.

5 - Duke Snider - another player with success twice, hitting 411 in the original and 476 in round three. Snider hit 407 home runs in real life and hit 33 in round two.

6 - Jeff Bagwell - hit 449 home runs in real life and 403 in the sequel and 424 in round three. After getting a bye in round one Bagwell hit 19 in round two. I wouldn't be surprised by an early exit for players like Bagwell who were just over 400 home runs.

7 - Albert Belle - Belle hit 381 home runs in real life and qualified with 520 in round three. Belle hit 27 in round one and 24 in round two.

8 - Joey Votto - has hit 133 home runs in real life so far and qualified with 414 in the original and 561 in round three. After earning a bye Votto hit 24 in round two.

9 - Gary Sheffield - hit 509 home runs in real life and qualified with 572 in round three. Hit 31 in round one and 32 in round two.

10 - Fred Lynn - hit 306 home runs in real life and qualified with 464 in round three. Lynn has hit 29 in round one and 17 in round two.

11 - Josh Hamilton - has hit 161 home runs in real life and qualified with 532 in round three. I can't help but think of the show he put on at Yankee Stadium during the home run derby and thinking he's got a shot to win it all. He's hit 35 in round one and 18 in round two.

12 - Geoff Jenkins - hit 221 home runs with 444 in the original. Has hit 26 in both rounds one and two.

13 - Ron Kittle - Kittle hit 176 home runs in real life and qualified with 416 in round four. Hit 17 in round one and 23 in round two.

14 -Kal Daniels - hit 104 home runs in real life and qualified with 462 home runs in round three. Daniels has hit 26 in round one and 25 in round two.

15 - Leroy Jones - didn't hit any home runs in real life, but hit 450 home runs in the sequel. Hit 27 in round one and 26 in round two.

16 - Lou Jackson - hit just 1 home run in real life and was a pinch hitter in the 1950's. Qualified with 417 home runs in round four. Jackson hit 16 in round one and 25 in round two.

1 - Alex Rodriguez - what to say about Arod. I guess he's one of those guys you either love or hate, although I think most people fall in the latter category. As a Yankee fan I have to admit I do too. He's hit 647 so far, and had 424 in the original and 886 in round three. His 18 in round two gives hope for an early exit though.

2 - Mule Suttles - the Negro League slugger is the second seed in bracket B. Suttles exploded with an unreal total of 1162 in round four, while hit a more realistic 559 in the sequel. The 1162 was inflated for reasons I've outlined before, but hitting 42 in round two proves that Suttles will be one to watch.

3 - Fred McGriff - the Crime Dog hit 493 home runs in real life, and 556 in the original. His 493 in round three matched his real life totals, and he hit 27 in round two.

4 - Willie Stargell - Stargell hit 475 home runs in real life and saw success in the original with 429 and round three with 591 home runs. He earned a buy and hit 28 home runs in round two.

5 - Mo Vaughn - Vaughn hit 328 home runs in real life, and 406 in the original. His 570 home runs in round four earned him a bye for round one and he hit 26 in round two.

6 - Eddie Mathews - with 512 home runs in real life Mathews only qualified once, in round three where he hit 476 home runs. Mathews hit 37 in round one and 30 in round two so far.

7 - Dave Winfield - another member of the 400 club, Winfield hit 416 in round three after hitting 465 home runs in real life. Winfield hit 24 in round one and 37 in round two.

8 - Andres Galarraga - after hitting 399 home runs in real life, Galarraga qualified in the original with 488 home runs and has hit 19 in each of rounds one and two.

9 - Dick Allen - Allen hit 351 home runs in real life and qualified with 440 home runs in the original. Allen had an impressive 37 in round one, and a more normal 22 in round two.

10 - Roger Maris - Maris hit 275 home runs in real life and qualified for the tournament in the play-in round. He's hit 31 in round one and 27 in round two.

11 - Kevin Mitchell - with 234 home runs in real life Mitchell hit 439 in round three. Mitchell hit 39 in round one and 30 in round two.

12 - Travis Hafner - has hit 200 home runs in real life so far, and 416 in the original and 403 in the sequel. After getting a bye in round one Hafner hit 26 in round two, and he's the lowest seed of any player with a bye.

13 - Matt Kemp - Kemp's hit 151 home runs in real life so far, and qualified with 432 home runs in the original. He's hit 24 in round one and 20 in round two.

14 - Gus Bell - qualified through the play-in round and hit 19 in round one and improved to 32 in round two. Bell hit 206 home runs in real life.

15 - Charlie Gilbert - only hit 5 home runs in the majors, but qualified with 433 homers in the sequel. Gilbert hit 31 in round one and 33 in round two.

16 - Gorman Thomas - qualified through the play-in round and hit 268 home runs in real life. If his round one total of 45 and round two total of 36 is any indication he'll be a tough round one match-up for Alex Rodriguez. Maybe things are lining up for an early A-Rod exit...

Thanks! Yeah, the last few days have been a little crazy. Hopefully things are stable now. From here on out I'll plan on having the pictures of the brackets, and might be able to share a site where they are loaded and allow predictions for anyone who wants to.

1 - Mike Schmidt - Schmidt has been consistently great since I've started doing this - 480 in the original, 412 in the sequel, 525 in round three, and 673 in round four. He hit 548 in real life, and started off with a very impressive 44 in round two. I think he'll go far, but I worry that he may not be able to put up as big of rounds as others.

2 - Hank Aaron - I still like to consider Aaron the true home run king with 755 homers in real life. He's another guy that typically bombs for me though, but he did hit 659 in round three and 32 in round two.

3 - Mickey Mantle - Mickey Mantle hit 536 home runs in real life, and only had success once, in round three, where he hit 678 home runs. Mantle hit 28 home runs in round two.

4 - Bill McNulty - with no home runs in real life, McNulty had success in both the sequel and round four where he hit 693 and 823 respectively. McNulty hit 30 home runs in round two.

5 - Troy Glaus - Glaus hit 320 home runs in real life, and hit 515 in the original and 470 in round three. Glaus hit 23 home runs in round two after getting a bye.

6 - Carlos Pena - Pena hit 277 home runs in real life, and was another hitter who had success twice, with 560 in the original and 409 in round three. Pena hit 41 in round two after getting a bye.

7 - Hideki Matsui - Godzilla hit 175 home runs in the majors, and another 332 home runs in Japan. Matsui qualified with 711 home runs in round four and hit 24 in round one and 23 in round two.

8 - Matt Williams - hit 378 home runs in real life and qualified with 480 homers in the original. Williams hit 35 in round one and 33 in round two.

9 - John Mayberry, Sr. - hit 255 home runs in real life and qualified with 513 in round four. Mayberry hit 33 in round one and 41 in round two.

10 - Hank Greenberg - hit 331 homers in real life and 440 in round three. Greenberg hit 26 in round one and 29 in round two.

11 - Charlie High - hit just one home run in 94 at-bats in 1919-1920, but hit 691 home runs in round four. Hit 24 in round one and 19 in round two.

12 - Sadaharu Oh - hit 865 home runs in Japan, and qualified with 409 home runs in round four. Hit 37 in round one and 24 in round two.

13 - Curtis Granderson - has hit 210 home runs so far in real life, and qualified through the play-in round. Granderson hit 23 in round one and 20 in round two.

14 - Bob Horner - hit 218 home runs in real life and qualified with 422 in the original. Horner hit 37 in round one and a very impressive 54 in round two. I think the 54 was a fluke, but regardless he'll be one to watch.

15 - Cecil Fielder - hit 319 home runs in real life and qualified through the play-in round. Hit 29 home runs in round one and 28 in round 29.

16 - Carlos Gonzalez - has hit 99 home runs so far in his career, and qualified with 491 in round three. Hit 13 in round one and 17 in round two.

Predictions

With all the brackets up, I've gone ahead and entered them in the link below. If anyone wants to make predictions that site allows you to do that as long as you register. I've never used the site before, but it appears to work pretty well.

OOTP HR Derby

I'm going to running round one on Thursday night and posting the results for brackets A-D on Thursday, and brackets E-H on Friday. Next weekend is a little up in the air, but I'm going to try and go from 64-32 on Saturday and Sunday, but no later than Monday and Tuesday.

Predictions

That site is pretty cool... my predictions are in. Went the underdog way, its never fun picking the favorites all the time.

There are some really interesting match-ups... 2nd round Yaz vs Teddy Baseball, 3rd round Gehrig vs Ruth... fun stuff.

Looking forward to see how good/bad I do. lol

Yeah, it was a pretty cool site, and pretty easy to enter the brackets in. I'm hoping that this turns out to be fun. I was surprised by some of the match-ups too, and I was surprised by how much fluctuation during testing with the same quick start. Someone would win it all, then get bounced in the first round.

So hopefully we'll see some updates and a worthy champion will emerge. Good luck with your predictions.

I'm really excited to see the major upsets, and I hope at least one surprise pick can make it to the final four. I never realized how exclusive a 128-member bracket is until now. Only the best got there.

Yes, I was definitely pleased when looking over the bracket. I think for the most part they all belong. I was surprised by seeing how deep some of the brackets were, so hopefully after all of this it'll feel like the winner is deserving.

One last chance to make predictions if you'd like -
OOTP HR Derby

I'll be starting round one tonight after work, so the predictions get locked at that time.

I was wondering how NYY #23 created the brackets and decided who would be in them. As for Bracketmaker, I've already made my predictions, but thanks anyway.

Thanks. That about covers it. Basically I took the average from their real life total and totals from the rounds so the top home run hitters would be top seeds. I figured it was better than having someone seeded high who had a good round.

And we're off

The round of 128 has begun (and completed, but it'll take some time to go through the results)

We'll be starting off in bracket H for Game number one while I take a little bit of time to enter the results and do some brief write-up.

#2-Hank Aaron vs. #15 Cecil Fielder

I started with this match-up because Aaron is first alphabetically, and it was an exciting match-up that finished tied at 17 after the first round, so let's talk about tie-breakers. We'll have a 'swing-off' or overtime which will consist of 20 game in simulation mode between the two players teams. First up for round one- Hank Aaron:

Size: 2.8 KB

Cecil Fielder's round one score again matched Aaron's total of 4 home runs:

On to round 2 for our second overtime period:

Despite the bad alignment, Hank Aaron hits 3 home runs in the second overtime against Cecil's 1 to advance to the next round in the first game of tournament.

Congratulations to Hammerin' Hank

#8-Andres Galarraga vs. #9-Dick Allen

In another close matchup Willie Stargell squeaks by Matt Kemp 20-18 after hitting 3 home runs in the last five games.
