At age 39, Matt Cain was helpful but showed near the end of the stretch run that he was in fact 39 years old and will not be resigned. Armando Rico is too much of a risk to resign for big $ and over long term. He will not be resigned. Romano, Walsh, Hernandez, Deoyes and Mora are simply not ready for the 40 man roster, all but Romano spent most of his time in AA ball this season. Matt Cain was released.

2023 Off Season Retirements

Cleveland Indians C Carlos Santana announced his retirement. The 37 year old Santana last played in the majors in 2022. Santana started his career in 2010 with the Cleveland Indians where he played all 1319 of his MLB games. Over that time he hit .287 with 200 HRs and 761 RBIs with 1432 hits.

Chicago Cubs 3B Jorge Gomez announced his retirement. The 35 year old Gomez hit .167 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 10 games for the Cubs this season. Gomez started his MLB career in 2013 with the Cubs where he played all 1106 of his MLB games. Over that time he had 932 hits, 20 HRs, 334 RBIs and a career batting average of .288.

New York Mets C Alex Avila announced his retirement. The 36 year old Avila hit .174 with 1 HR and 8 RBIs in 42 games last season with the Mets. Avila started his MLB career in 2009 with the Detroit Tigers, he also played in Colorado, Cleveland and finally with New York. He has played in 1472 games, has 1342 hits, 184 HRs, 657 RBIs and has a .261 career batting average. He is a 2-time Gold Glover.

San Fransisco Giants 1B Lonnie Chisenhall announced his retirement. The 35 year old Chisenhall hit .100 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 10 games with the Giants this season. Chisenhall started his MLB career in 2011 with the Cleveland Indians. He was with the Indians until 2021 when he became a Giant. He played in 1457 MLB games, had 1628 hits, 243 HRs, 835 RBIs and a .291 batting average. He won a Gold Glove at 3B in 2012.

New York Yankees SP Tim Lincecum has announced his retirement. The 39 year old Lincecum was 5-7 with a 4.60 ERA in 39 games, 10 starts in 2023. Lincecum started his MLB career in 2007 with the San Fransisco Giants, he became a Yankee in 2016. He started in 507 games, had a 255-116 career record with a 3.28 ERA and 3836 strikeouts over 3419 innings. Lincecum is a 8-time Cy Young Award Winner.

San Diego Padres MR Joba Chamberlain has announced his retirement. The 38 year old Chamberlain was 3-1 with 3 saves, a 3.21 ERA in 48 games for the Padres. Chamberlain started his career in 2007 with the Yankees, he became a Cincinnati Red in 2011 before getting traded to the Braves in 2017. Over his career he has appeared in 916 games, has a 73-63 record with 302 saves, a 3.31 ERA over 1157 innings combined with 1257 strikeouts. Chamberlain was involved in a deal that the Reds obtained Ricardo Diaz from the Braves.

The Cincinnati Reds were not active during the Rule 5 Draft, but did lose two players.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected C Raul Ibarra in 1st round, 23rd overall pick during the Rule 5 draft from the Reds. The 25 year old Ibarra spent most of 2023 in AA where he hit .299 with 9 HRs and 40 RBIs in 78 games.

The Atlanta Braves selected MR Tim Melton in the 1st round, 11th overall pick of the Rule 5 draft from the Reds. The 25 year old Melton spent most of 2023 in AAA where he was 6-0 with 1 save, a 3.87 ERA in 79 games.

The Seattle Mariners have signed C Henry Moreno to a 3 year, $47.0M deal. The 34 year old Moreno hit .284 with 18 HRs and 75 RBIs in 149 games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023.

The Outfield is a little beat up injury wise, Romero is back in 1 week and McCoy and Robinson will be back in 3 weeks.
