(Guess) He didn't go in with a straight leg studs showing, but swung to play the ball before missing and catching the player. Still a booking, but probably wasn't intended as bad as it looked.

You shouldn't be surprised there are so many European teams at this stage. There are after all an average of 5.83 in the quarter-finals, with an expected average for UEFA teams of 4.25.
