Jack Boylan

Box rec shows him as a welterweight with no victories to his name. TBCB2 rates the guy a "5" HW, so he couldn't have been that terrible. Anyone know any more about him?

The only thing I know about him is that he fought Jack Dempsey (the Nonpareil not the HW) early in Dempsey's career. So, he would have been a WW not a HW (possibly whoever rated him thought he had fought the HW Dempsey & rated him at HW or maybe he eventually moved up in weight since back then the difference between WW & HW wasn't so huge).

The only reason I happen to know this is because my dad was a big Nonpareil fan. I looked up Dempsey's record on Boxrec & sure enough Boylan shows up early on. I'm almost sure, though, that I've seen it recorded somewhere that there was a second fight between the two. It may be one of those unconfirmed fights that Boxrec doesn't recognize or my memory may just suck.

1893-1895?

On the eve of his battle for the UoLBA title, I did a fresh search and uncovered this gem.

This still was made before Courtney's match with Jim Corbett - a well documented (with video still in existence) brawl that somehow isn't noted on boxrec. According to boxrec, Courtney was 0-3-0 (a puzzling coincidence with Jack Boylan's boxrec record), with 2 losses to Peter Maher, and one to a Charley Strong shortly before his death by tuberculosis in 1896.
