O'Brien handles Houck in a snoozefest

May 28, 1908

Jack O'Brien (20-3-1) scored a SD15 over #8 Leo Houck (13-8-1) for his 2nd defense of his LBC Lightheavyweight Title.

This fight was a classic bore. O'Brien suffered cuts in the 5th and 8th. Houck suffered one in the 9th.

Neither T.C. Dale (ringside expert) nor I thought the fight was close. I had it 147-142 and Dale had it 145-141.

The official judges had it 146-141/143-144/145-142.

On the undercard

HW - Sam McVey (18-5) KO7 Steve Reynolds (7-6-2)
HW - Sam Langford (17-5-1) KO2 Billy Wilson (13-15-1)
LW - Patsy Sweeney (10-8-2) UD10 Jewey Cooke (10-5-3)
HW - Punch Vaughn (6-1) KO7 Mick Dooley (7-22-1) (Vaughn fought at pp for this club fight)
LW - Mike Daly (12-17-2) UD10 Mike Cushing (8-18-4) (club fight)

This one was doomed from the get go I find both of these guys, along with Jim Corbett continually have boring fights in my universe as well.....Houck was especially irritating, he became the John Ruiz of one of my prior replays.

I agree nothing more boring than these two, unfortunately the fight was unavoidable. I almost skipped my rule of watching all championship fights on this one, but I didn't.

Corbett, in my universe, is 24-7-2 with a whopping 4 stoppages. Somehow he has only managed to fight for the title 1 time and almost won losing a SD15 to Jack Johnson. His average rounds is 9.5 and considering all my fights are 10 rounders except for title bouts, that's pretty sad. 13 knockdowns in 314 fights.

Houck is even worse. He has 3 title fights and his average rounds per fight is 10.9. No knockouts and only 4 knockdowns.

End of May 1908

May saw zero titles change hands and really not much movement. Anyone who looks at the monthly fights, I accidently set June dates for 22 fights so this month will look light and next month will be packed.

Fighter movement

HW - Harry Laing (8-0-1) club to main
LH - Jim Barry (8-2-1) club to main
MW - Sailor Burke (8-1) club to main
LW - Leach Cross (7-5-1) club to main
FW - Eddie Lenny (7-4-2) club to main
BW - Dennis McFadden (6-11-1) main to club

Debut Rankings

HW - Joe Jeannette (15-0) LBA2, LBC1, LBF1
HW - Steve Reynolds (7-6-2) LBA44, LBC45, LBF41

Monthly fights attached

McAllister continues to win

LHW - Bob McAllister ran his record to (3-0) with a KO3 over TC Giuseppe Pavese (0-3). He needs two more wins to move up to the club division.

Go Bob!

Mike:

Have you had any troubles with the history utility? I had wanted to post monthly fight logs such as you have here, but I can never get it to record any of the heavyweight bouts. The HW title histories are off too, so I just gave up on it at this point.

For some reason it seems if you add fighters to the Universe after you have used the utility it corrupts it. Try deleting everything in the exchange folder, importing the data from scratch and then running the utility again. I have done this twice after my history got corrupted and everything worked fine.

Actually other than a few weird months like April 902, every thing works out fine. I believe there was some issues on an early version with the title histories but the last download was perfect for me. I just checked the title histories and the look alright.

Thanks, I've done that but it just never works for me. I wonder if the size has anything to do with it? I have around 60,000 records that are exporting.

Oh well, no harm.

I delete everything from my exchange file every month. At the end of the month I export and run the utility again. I've yet to have a problem with it (except for the weird months, which are always the same)

June 1908 title fights

Four title fights scheduled for June with the first ever unification bout. Remember I changed the rules so that there is a 25% chance that the bout is a unification bout if two champs are fighting in the same month.

WW - (LBC) Peter Jackson (16-2) vs #5 Dixie Kid (15-11-5) (Jackson beat Kid to win the title in August of 1908, Jackson won by UD15)

LW - (UT, LBA/LBC) Jack McAuliffe (25-5-2) vs Battling Nelson (17-12) (McAulliffe goes in as a heavy favorite having won twice over Nelson with neither fight going the distance)

BW - (LBC) Johnny Coulon (16-2) vs #1 George Dixon (24-6) (first meeting)

BW - (LBA) Terry McGovern (27-5-2) vs. #16 Billy Plimmer (17-11-4) (Plimmer has lost to McGovern twice, the last time for the title which sent Plimmer into a tailspin that saw him lose 6 straight fights and drop to 20th in the rankings. Plimmer has since won two in a row)

McAuliffe wins first unified title

June 11, 1908

LBA champ Jack McAuliffe (26-5-2) won a UD15 over LBC champ Battling Nelson (17-13) to win the Unified Lightweight title, in the first Louisville Boxing Association unification bout.

McAuliffe came out strong winning 3 of the first 4 rounds. He was given a 10-8 edge in the 4th despite no knockdown. Nelson was cut under the left eye in the 4th and his right eye started swelling.

Nelson fought back hard in the middle rounds to pull the bout close after 10.

McAuliffe won the 11th and then knocked down Nelson in the 12th. Nelson showed alot of heart though as he rallied to win the 13th and 14th.

McAuliffe seemed to win the 15th to seal the victory.

I had it 143-140. Ringside expert Markus Heinsohn scored it 144-140. The official judges scored it 142-141/143-140/144-140.

There will be a % chance on all title bouts on who sanctions the fight. Some defenses will be unified while others will just be for one crown.

On the undercard

LW - Ad Wolgast (8-6) TKO10 Eddie Connelly (8-6-1)
HW - Bill Lang (13-5) UD10 Frank Slavin (19-11-1)
MW - Frank Klaus (12-4-1) SD10 Joe Costa (8-3-4)
LH - Jack Welsh (6-1-1) MD8 Jack Stewart (6-16-3) (welsh fought at pp for this club fight)
MW - Kid Carter (8-9-2) UD10 Johnny McGlade (10-19-3) (club fight)

Coulon retains title

June 16, 1908

Johnny Coulon (17-2) scored a TKO7 over #1 George Dixon (24-7) for his first defense of the LBC Bantamweight title.

Dixon was ahead on the score cards when the bout was stopped in the 7th. He had lost the 3rd round fairly lopsidedly when Coulon staggered him midway through the round then poured it on. That round caused his right eye to start swelling.

Dixon got hit with a shot early in the 7th which opened a cut over his swollen right eye and blood was streaming into the eye, which caused the ref to stop the fight.

I had Dixon ahead at the time 59-56. Ringside expert, Jaret Morgan, had it 58-56, also for Dixon.

On the undercard

MW - Dan Creedon (17-10-1) DRAW10 George Lablanche (15-15-4)
FW - Eddie Lenny (7-4-3) DRAW10 Billy Finucane (7-8-3)
LW - Mike Leonard (7-0-2) SD8 Irish Jack Smith (6-2) (both fighters were at pp for this club fight)
FW - Boss Edwards (6-2) UD8 Eugene Hornbacher (7-2) (both fighters were at pp for this club fight)
BW - Danny Dougherty (10-13) UD10 Tommy Feltz (10-18-1) (club fight)

Glad that last post made sense. I got up for work on Tuesday morning at 4 a.m. Worked until 1. Came home, got ready, drove 2 1/2 hours to Nashville to take the wife to see Papa Roach (in a bar, it was pretty cool in that small setting) who went on stage at 11pm. Left the bar at 1:15 am and drove back. So I hadn't been to sleep yet on that last post =)

They should be more frequent now, as I adopted new rules for unification bouts.

McGovern retains title

June 26, 1908

Terry McGovern (27-5-3) did more than enought to win his fight against #16 Billy Plimmer (17-11-5) but for some reason it was judged a draw.

McGovern pretty much controlled the fight from the start and dominated the middle rounds. In the 8th, he opened a cut under Plimmer's right eye and caused Billy's left eye to swell.

I only had Plimmer winning 3 rounds after the 5th and had the fight scored 144-141 for McGovern. Ringside expert, Mirco Mizera, had it 144-142 for McGovern.

The judges, however, saw it 143-142/143-143/142-143.

On the undercard

LW - George Lavigne (22-11-1) MD10 Charley White (7-5-2)
LH - Billy McColl (7-8) SD10 Gunner Moir (7-9-1)
BW - George Wright (7-0) MD8 Jimmy Williams (5-3) (both fighters pre for this club fight)
FW - Dick Mills (6-0) UD8 George Phalin (5-2) (both fighters pre for this club fight)
LH - Mike Kine (9-15-4) MD10 Chris Pearson (3-14-1) (both fighters post for this club fight)
