Player Development Report

Latest report from Boston Red Sox head scout Ron Maurer. While there were several favorable bumps up with the relievers, as well as a great move by Kyle Teel, I really hate seeing the dip with Masataka Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela. While I have contemplated moving on from Yoshida, I envisioned Rafaela being a staple of the outfield for many years. I will need to monitor that one closely.

MLB Off-Season Team Summary by WAR

With the 2025 season fast approaching, a quick look at the teams that were active in reshaping their organizations. Leading the way are the Tampa Bay Rays, who saw a whopping 14.5 WAR gain with the addition of Luis Arraez (4.3), Carlos Rodon (4.1), Bo Bichette (4.0), and Steven Kwan (2.1).

Close behind were the San Diego Padres with 11.8 WAR gained through the additions of Zac Gallen (6.2), Nathan Eovaldi (4.9), Jazz Chisholm (2.6), and Martin Perez (2.5).

The Boston Red Sox (-1.1 WAR) were non-movers, as their only meaningful departure was the free agent loss of Nick Pivetta. At the bottom of the list are the Miami Marlins (-13.4 WAR) and Arizona Diamondbacks (-22.5 WAR).

Boston Ships McGuire to Philly

With rumors circulating throughout the Red Sox spring training complex about a pending blockbuster trade, today's deal did not meet expectations for the local fans and media alike. In reaching deal terms with Philadelphia, Boston sends veteran 30-year old C Reese McGuire to the City of Brotherly Love in return for 21-year old C Jorge Mendez and 22-year old 2B Alexeis Azuaje.

While the Red Sox get the immediate $3.2M salary savings, it leaves a gap with catching depth, as McGuire is regarded as one of the better defensive catchers in the league. Assistant GM Brian O'Halloran viewed the deal as "while not improving us by a lot, this would not really hurt us either." It is unlikely that this is the final move for the Red Sox, as they look to improve their infield defense.

Philadelphia receives:
Code:
Reese McGuire (30-year old C)
Drafted in 1st round, 14th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates (2013)
.232/.231/.391 with 10 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 18 R, 24 RBI, 1 BB, 35 K for 0.5 WAR in 156 PA (MLB / 2024)
.255/.292/.378 with 61 2B, 3 3B, 17 HR, 101 R, 88 RBI, 48 BB, 226 K for 3.7 WAR in 1017 PA (MLB / 7 Seasons)
Boston receives:
Code:
Jorge Mendez (21-year old C)
International Free Agent signed by Philadelphia Phillies (2019)
Florida State League All-Star (2024)
.291/.345/.471 with 25 2B, 4 3B, 15 HR, 52 R, 54 RBI for 2.6 WAR in 470 PA (A, A+ / 2024)
.294/.371/.450 with 40 2B, 4 3B, 17 HR, 82 R, 90 RBI for 3.3 WAR in 717 PA (R, A, A+ / 4 seasons)

Alexeis Azuaje (22-year old 2B)
International Free Agent signed by Philadelphia Phillies (2018)
South Atlantic League Platinum Stick Award (DH) (2024)
.255/.305/.542 with 13 2B, 4 3B, 43 HR, 84 R, 101 RBI for 1.7 WAR in 561 PA (A+, AA / 2024)
.270/.323/.513 with 42 2B, 8 3B, 54 HR, 166 R, 145 RBI for 2.9 WAR in 983 PA (R, A, A+, AA / 4 seasons)

Bazzana Headlines BNN Top 100 Prospects List

As Opening Day approaches, anticipation is building across baseball. Not just for established stars, but for the next wave of elite talent on the doorstep of the majors. The annual BNN Top 100 Prospects list has officially been released, and this year’s top spot belongs to 22-year-old second baseman Travis Bazzana of the Oakland Athletics. Bazzana’s advanced hit tool, strike-zone discipline, and developing power made him the clear choice at No. 1 overall. At No. 2 is 20-year-old catcher Samuel Basallo of the Baltimore Orioles, whose power and arm strength give him star-level upside. Right-hander Andrew Painter checks in at No. 3 and now anchors the pitching crop as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The outfield class is particularly strong. Dylan Crews (No. 4) of the Washington Nationals and Victor Mesa Jr. (No. 5) of the Boston Red Sox headline a group known for athleticism and offensive upside. Termarr Johnson ranks sixth for the Pittsburgh Pirates, continuing to impress evaluators with his polished approach at the plate. Yoniel Curet follows at No. 7, representing the Cleveland Guardians as another high-upside arm on the rise. Rounding out the top 10 are Jonatan Clase (No. 8) and Lazaro Montes (No. 10) of the Seattle Mariners, along with Walker Jenkins (No. 9) of the Red Sox.

Season Expectation from Owner

With the 2025 MLB regular season starting today, Boston Red Sox owner John Henry informed me that his expectation is that my leadership takes the team to at least reach the playoffs; that I upgrade at 2B (currently Tommy Edman), and improve team defensive efficiency. Okay Boss -- you got it!

Pre-Season Prediction - Standings (Revised)

Revised prediction for the 2025 MLB season is out, and there are changes throughout. The American League East is now a tight race with Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and Boston. The AL Central has the Twins breaking away (slightly) from the pack with an increase of 9-games in the win column. The American League West has the Mariners dropping back, with the Rangers poised to take the top spot. The National League did not see change in any of the top 2 spots, but the win totals increased significantly for the division leaders, with the Phillies projected to have an NL best 99-win season.

Arrow Game 1: Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

Raleigh’s Grand Slam Powers Mariners Past Red Sox on Opening Night

Seattle, WA — The roof was closed, the crowd was loud, and the 2025 season opened with a thud for the Red Sox. Behind a dominant outing from Seattle ace George Kirby and a late-inning grand slam by slugger Cal Raleigh, the Seattle Mariners (1-0) rolled to a 7-1 victory Thursday night at T-Mobile Park over the visiting Boston Red Sox (0-1).

Seattle pitcher George Kirby (1-0) looked every bit like an ace in his first start of the year, as the big right-hander worked seven innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out seven and walking one; Game Score 67. Boston’s lone run came in the sixth inning when Rafael Devers delivered an RBI single to briefly cut the lead in half. But Kirby limited the damage, stranding runners and inducing soft contact when it mattered most. Reliever Matt Brash (H 1) held things in check with 1⅓ innings of scoreless ball before Emerson Hancock ended the game for the final 2/3 innings.

On the other side, Tanner Houck (0-1) kept the Red Sox within striking distance early, as he permitted two earned runs over 5⅓ innings, striking out five without issuing a walk; Game Score 53. His only major mistake came in the fourth inning, when J.P. Crawford launched a solo home run to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Reliever Roansy Contreras covered the next 2 innings in which he permitted 1 earned run on 3 hits and 3 walks, before turning the ball over to rookie Luis Perales who imploded with 4 earned runs on 1 hit, 3 walks, and 1 wild pitch. Jack Leiter secured the final out to end the misery.

At the plate, the Mariners totaled 10 hits and drew 6 walks, as they capitalized on Boston’s bullpen lapses. Julio Rodríguez had a fine opening-day performance, as he finished with a 2-for-4 night with two RBI and a stolen base, setting the tone near the top of the order. Additionally, Cal Raleigh (1 for 5, Homerun, 4 RBI), and J.P. Crawford (2 for 4, Homerun) were difference makers.

Boston collected eight hits but left 10 runners on base. Masataka Yoshida and Rafael Devers each had two hits, but the team went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and struck out nine times overall. “We didn’t play well enough to win,” skipper Sussex Newton said afterward.

Player of the Game: George Kirby

AL East Standings: Tied 3rd Place, 1 Game Behind

Red Sox Pitch In for Community Charity

At the urging of their starting pitcher, Jack Flaherty, the Boston Red Sox have committed significant support to a local charity initiative. Flaherty had approached team management about his efforts to help the Boston community, inspiring action from the organization.

“Jack came to us and told us about the work he was doing and we were inspired,” said team owner John Henry. “That is the kind of civic-minded thinking that I really admire. I personally asked him how much he needed to get a new program off the ground and wrote him a check. The team is proud to be a part of the Boston community and we want to help it in any way that we can.” The initiative marks another example of the Red Sox engaging with their local community, demonstrating that their commitment extends beyond the baseball diamond.

Acuna Jr. Powers Braves Past Phillies with Three Home Runs

Ronald Acuna Jr. lived up to his pregame prediction in spectacular fashion Tuesday, launching three home runs to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 12-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Acuna Jr. had told teammates before the game he was confident a homer was coming—and he delivered not just one, but three. He finished with 5 RBI and scored three times. “During batting practice I really had my swing down pat,” Acuna Jr. said. “I felt some thunder in the lumber.”

The right fielder singled in the first inning, then hit solo shots off Ranger Suarez in the third and Taijuan Walker in the fourth, struck out in the sixth, and capped his day with a three-run blast off Joe Mantiply in the eighth. “I was seeing good, feeling good, and swinging good,” Acuna Jr. added, reflecting on one of the best days of his career at the plate. What a way to start the season!

Arrow Game 2: Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

Red Sox Rally in Sixth to Top Mariners, 6–3

Seattle, WA — The Boston Red Sox used a five-run sixth inning to power past the Seattle Mariners, 6-3, on Friday night at T-Mobile Park. Trailing 3-1 entering the sixth, Boston erupted against Seattle starter Luis Castillo. Rafael Devers delivered a key run-scoring double, and the Red Sox capitalized on timely hitting to seize control for good. Boston finished with 12 hits (4 for extra bases), led Ceddanne Rafaela (2 for 4, Homerun, 2 Runs, 2 RBI), Devers (2 for 4, Double Run, RBI), and Masataka Yoshida (3 for 4). Right-hander Logan Gilbert (1-0) earned the win for Boston, allowing three runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight; Game Score 55. The bullpen combination of Max Meyer and Liam Hendriks closed the door, with Hendriks (SV 1) recording his first save of the season.

Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh did his part in the loss, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning that briefly put the Mariners ahead. However, the team managed just one hit after the sixth inning and struck out 11 times as a team. For the Mariners, Luis Castillo (0-1) was tagged with the loss after permitting 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk in 5 ⅓ innings of play; Game Score 37. Carson Whisenhunt and Miguel Castro provided a combined 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the loss.

With the victory, Boston improved to 1-1 on the young 2025 campaign, while Seattle fell to 1-1.

Player of the Game: Cal Raleigh

Boston Deals Cleavinger and Wong to KC

In an early season move that underscores the unpredictable calculus of roster building in Major League Baseball, the Boston Red Sox announced today they have acquired 23-year-old minor league left fielder Jared Dickey and a 12th-round draft pick from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for left-hander Garrett Cleavinger, catcher Connor Wong, and a 14th-round selection. While in no way should this deal be viewed as franchise-altering, it does seemingly improve the direction of both teams.

Boston parts with two established big leaguers in Cleavinger and Wong, but both of which had been squeezed out of playing time. In return, the club adds a young outfield prospect in Dickey, viewed internally as a projectable bat with upside, along with a modest bump in draft position. For Kansas City, the trade brings immediate depth behind the plate and an experienced left arm to bolster the pitching staff. For the Red Sox, it’s a longer-term play picking up a potential difference maker at the plate, while improving draft position and saving approximately $1.46M in salary.

Overall, this was a low-cost move to make. I had acquired Cleavinger off the waiver wire last season so other than salary, nothing lost. For Wong, the organization is deep at the catcher position so it was very unlikely that he would see any meaningful playing time with Boston. The draft pick flip improved the value of the selection, so moving up 2 rounds and getting a prospect like Dickey that put up solid numbers last year seemed like the right thing to do.

Kansas City receives:
Code:
Garrett Cleavinger (30-year old RP)
Drafted in 3rd round, 27th pick (102nd overall) by the Baltimore Orioles (2015)
1-2 W/L record with 1 Hold, 53 K, 28 BB, and 4.93 ERA for -0.7 WAR in 45.2 IP (MLB / 2024)
5-7 W/L record with 2 Holds, 121 K, 53 BB, and 4.17 ERA for -0.7 WAR in 99.1 IP (MLB / 5 Seasons)

Connor Wong (28-year old C)
Drafted in 3rd round, 25th pick (100th overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers (2015)
.302/.366/.577 with 32 2B, 3 3B, 29 HR, 83 R, 88 RBI, 35 BB, 138 K for 3.9 WAR in 500 PA (AAA / 2024)
.282/.344/.515 with 115 2B, 12 3B, 100 HR, 291 R, 318 RBI, 148 BB, 584 K for 8.5 WAR in 2066 PA (R, A, A+, AA, AAA / 6 Seasons)
.231/.288/.382 with 29 2B, 3 3B, 10 HR, 66 R, 44 RBI, 28 BB, 157 K for 1.3 WAR in 469 PA (MLB / 3 Seasons)

14th Round Draft Pick (slot TBD)
Boston receives:
Code:
Jared Dickey (23-year old LF)
Drafted in 11th round, 5th pick (319th overall) by the Kansas City Royals (2023)
Midwest League All-Star (2024)
.295/.392/.498 with 30 2B, 4 3B, 22 HR, 67 R, 64 RBI, 65 BB, 90 K for 3.4 WAR in 599 PA (A+ / 2024)
.301/.398/.490 with 35 2B, 8 3B, 22 HR, 87 R, 84 RBI, 79 BB, 103 K for 4.3 WAR in 726 PA (R, A, A+ / 2 Seasons)

12th Round Draft Pick (slot TBD)

Crawford Dominant as Red Sox Top Mariners

Seattle, WA — The Boston Red Sox (2-1) rode a dominant outing from Kutter Crawford to a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners (1-2) on Saturday night at T-Mobile Park. Boston broke through with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Triston Casas (HR 1) and a solo shot by Ceddanne Rafaela (HR 2). Casas finished with two RBI, Rafaela smacked two hits and recorded a stolen base, and Masataka Yoshida added two hits.

Starter Kutter Crawford (1-0) was sharp throughout, allowing one run on four hits over 6⅓ innings while recording nine strikeouts and just two walks; Game Score 68. The lone blemish of his outing being a sixth-inning solo homer by Pete Alonso (HR 1). Max Meyer (H 2) covered 1 2/3 innings with one earned run allowed, before turning the ball over to Liam Hendriks (SV 2) who worked a scoreless ninth to wrap up the game.

Seattle starter Logan Evans (0-1) was tagged with the loss after permitting four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6 innings of work; Game Score 46. Emerson Hancock pitched two innings of relief in which he allowed one earned run, and then Miguel Castro covered the final inning in a scoreless appearance. On offense, the Mariners managed just six hits, led by catcher Cal Raleigh's three hits (HR 3).

Arrow Game 4: Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

Duran’s Two Homers Power Red Sox Past Mariners

Seattle, WA — The Boston Red Sox erupted for 19 hits Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 13-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Left fielder Jarren Duran (HR 2) led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a walk, three runs scored and five RBI. Duran’s solo shot in the third inning ignited a four-run frame, and his two-run blast in the seventh put the game out of reach. Of Note, Durran was named MLB's #1 Performance of the Day.

Boston (3-1) broke things open with a four-run fifth and added two more in the sixth. First baseman Triston Casas delivered a key two-run single in the sixth with the bases loaded, extending the lead to 10-5. Third baseman Rafael Devers (HR 1) chipped in three hits, including a home run, and drove in two. Seattle (1-3) made its push in the fifth when Pete Alonso (HR 2) launched a three-run homer to close the gap to 8-5. But Boston’s bullpen settled in from there, with reliever Joely Rodriguez (1-0) earning the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings after starter Brayan Bello was knocked from the game after just 4 2/3 innings in which he permitted five earned runs; Game Score 36. Reliever Justin Slaten covered the final two innings in a scoreless effort.

Seattle starter Garrett Whitlock (0-1) took the loss after surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits in four innings; Game Score 20. The relief efforts of Bryan Woo, Lucas Sims, and James Paxton allowed a combined six earned runs on eleven hits. At the plate, the Mariners were led by Pete Alonso (Homerun, 4 RBI), Cal Raleigh (Hit, Walk, RBI), and Gleyber Torres (2 Hits, Double).

Starter Osvaldo Bido (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings; Game Score 42. The defeat dropped the Athletics to 1–4 on the season.
