The first and most obvious thing is that for the 2nd straight year offense is way way down. Looking at the league leaders in AVG, and OPS makes it abundantly clear. As a team, we are 2nd in the CL at .228. That's insane. Looking at the ERA numbers it's wildly clear too.
This is a year in which you can't do traditional judgment but rather league comps as a way to know what's going on.

MID SEASON TOP PROSPECT REPORTS
The thing that jumps out at me is the complete lack of any Rustlers on the pitching side of things. I hope this draft will fix that.

2018 ALL-STAR BREAK
The red outlined players are players that were at one time in the Rustler organization.

Name: 2018 All star rosters.jpg
Views: 79
Size: 273.2 KB
  • New York Punisher 1B Brendan Robbins outlasted superstar Abdul-Muta'al Rhodes 19-13 in the final round of the 2018 HR Derby.
  • Bison CF Shing Jen took home the MVP honors for the 2018 All-Star game as the Colonial League beat the Patriot 6-1.

  • 2018 ALL STAR BREAK STATE OF THE UNION: AUSTIN RUSTLERS
  • 160,000,000 budget = 1st
  • 142,982,982 payroll = 1st
  • 50 wins 41 losses = Unacceptable
  • Offense in the ABL feels and looks like it's at an all-time low. The PL's leading hitter is hitting .297.
  • Multiple starting pitchers reach the all-star break with sub 2 ERA's.
  • All that is to say that I accept the facts the data displays, but not a single one of those excuses a record of just 9 games over .500.
  • The most troubling thing, aside from the lack of depth of pitching prospects, is the fact this team ranks dead last in defensive efficiency. That does nothing to explain the offensive issues but it is a huge factor in the record we sit on right now.
  • Attendance is now down. It's down just 1.6% but given that we are the highest ticket prices in the game (35$) and our revenue per game is up 14.8%, that isn't going to last.
  • A team chock full of stars isn't “starring”.
  • So the question now becomes one of two, with two very divergent paths depending on the answers
  • 1) Blow it up?
  • 2) Stick it out?
  • I don't think blowing it up is the solution. And that's far easier to say than do given the size of contracts we'd be talking about moving.
  • Sticking it out is, in my opinion, only possible for a week or two more at most.
  • Factoring in the league will be expanding by two more clubs at season's end to both questions.
  • So many little pinpricks in the balloon. We're only hitting .225 as a team, but that is good for 3rd in the league. We're 8th in runs at 346 and 2nd in runs against. But our Def. Eff. And ZR is both atrocious and I'm led to believe much of that is coming from the move of Joe Tighe from SS to 2B. There is no quick solution short of trading Mike Davis since he's only a SS and really can't play anywhere else
.

AUSTIN SHAKES IT UP. A FLURRY OF SHOCKING MOVES IN TEXAS!
  • The defending world champions are clearly not settling for 2nd best. A game and a half out at the All-Star break might be good enough for most, but clearly not for Austin Rustler GM Curt Schilling. In a stunning news conference, the Rustler GM announced the team had made two major trades in less than 24 hours.
  • In the 1st deal with the Montreal Paragons, the Rustlers sent SP Chris Whisner (3.5*), OF Chris Kardell (2.5*) IF Ken Bruins (2.5*) IF Francisco Cordova and P Prospect Kent Spargo (2.5*) along with 1.4 million in cash to Montreal for SP Justin Myers (3.5*).
  • Whisner was 7-8 3.97 since being acquired from Los Angeles in a deal for RP Alex Arregui, SP Dave Steele, and RP Victor Huerta. Whisner is a free agent at year's end.
  • Myers, 30, is also a free agent at year's end and was 8-7 2.62 for Montreal after a 15-10 3.00 season in 2017 for Ft Worth. He was drafted by the Cowboys and is 80-70 3.75 in 233 G (193 GS) with 1428 K's in 1330.2 IP. He has a career WHIP of 1.23.
  • Spargo was an int'l signing and was one of Austin's better P prospects. Something they've lamented about in the last few days.
  • In the 2nd deal, Austin sent SP Justin Wilson (3.5*) and P prospect Pita Makamae (2*) along with a 2019 3rd round draft choice to New England for star 2B Brian Bauer (3.5*) and a 2019 2nd round draft choice.
  • Wilson, 9-7 2.72, was 14-11 3.16 last year after signing a 3 year 11.45 million dollar FA deal in 2016.
  • Bauer, a 3x all-star, has led the league in SB's 4 times and in 2012 finished 2nd in MVP voting after a 260 hit .375 45 2B 14 3B 65 SB campaign. Just 31, he has 2 seasons remaining on a 5-year deal he had signed at 5.8 million for each year.
  • Immediately after the deal was announced SS Mike Davis was optioned to AAA Warren and SP Dave Tillery was recalled to the ABL roster.

BACKROOM CHATTER
Something needed to be done. Mike Davis is hitting just .207 and his defense isn't what it needs to be. Joe Tighe will move back to SS and Bauer will take over the everyday 2B job. Tillery will go into the rotation behind Myers.

LAST 10 DAYS OF THE YEAR
  • In the PL the post-season is decided.
  • Baltimore (89) San Jose (89) Mexico (88) are in.
  • Philadelphia is 9.5 up with 10 to play.
  • In the CL Providence (99) is the only team to clinch.
  • Austin (87) leads Ft Worth (86) by 1 game and they play the seasons final 3 games head to head. Ft Worth is currently 7 games up on Dallas for the Wild Card so it's highly probable the 2nd place team will be the WC and will face the ABL's best team in round 1, Providence.
  • The CL Sam Houston and Central Divisions are the ABL's only races left and Lexington has a 1.5 game lead over Charlotte and 3 game lead on Green Bay.
  • Lexington's final 6 = 3 @ Ft Worth 3 @ Charlotte
  • Charlotte's final 7 = 4 vs Ohio 3 vs Lexington
  • Green Bay final 6 = 3 @ Memphis 3 @ Dallas

In the Sam Houston
  • Austin's final 6 = 3 @ San Antonio 3 @ Ft Worth (Austin's season concludes with a 13 game road trip that started last week in Lexington)
  • Ft Worth's final 6 = 3 vs Lexington 3 vs Austin
  • LF Nick Romero has taken over LF duties as Austin rides his hot bat. Romero hit a HR on the 1st pitch he saw in the ABL during a PH at bat and is hitting .314-5-15 over 15 G and 8 GS
  • As it lines up now the final series will see Forney (18-6 2.31) Behrens (14-7 2.16) and Justin Myers (13-10 2.64) taking the ball. Depending on how we arrive at that series, with an off day prior to the series start, Tim Collins could take the ball in the final game if it were to decide the division title.
