The White Stockings fans are not happy about how their team has let the Red Caps get away from them again in the NL pennant race. He team had a poor month in September picking up only 3 wins while losing 6. This has left them in second place in the NL Table 1 and a half games behind the team from Boston. To win the pennant it looks like they will need to win their remaining 3 games and also hope the Red Caps lose at least 3 of their last 4.

7th October 1878

The Orioles fans are happily celebrating pennant number 4 for their team. This is the team's first pennant since 1874 as they managed to fight their way back to the top of the AL table. The season saw a steady performance from the Orioles all year with 1 excellent month in June. This was enough to see the team always in front by enough to keep their fans from worrying too much. Up next for the Orioles is the MLB Championship Series where they will face old rivals the Chicago White Stockings for the 3rd time. It currently stands as 1 win a piece.

The regular season ended with a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Athletics followed by a 2-1 series win against the Cleveland Blues 5-2, 4-6 and 3-2

The batting was always doing just enough for the wins during the season. The best batter on the season was Veteran Second Baseman Lip Pike. Pike has been an ever present starter when fit since the league began. This year he started all 60 games and had 240 at bats. These at bats saw him claim 70 hits for an average of .292. This also included 42 runs and 20 RBI's for the year.

The main starter for the pitching this season was Hugh O'Neill. O'Neill has been with the team for three season's but this is the first he was the main starter after winning the job from Cherokee Fisher. He started 49 games during the season and pitched 414.1 innings. During these innings he gave up 387 hits and 79 earned runs for an ERA of 1.72. This could see him at the awards dinner but we will have to see what the voters think.

The fans of the Red Caps are crying today as they saw their team throw away the NL pennant in the last game of the season. The team could not find the 3 wins in October to take them back to the MLB Championship Series this year as they were overhauled by the Chicago White Stockings in the final game. While they lost out on the pennant by 1 game, the team had another solid season with 33 wins in total. They had a good early part of the season with strong months in May and June but were let down by a poor August and finish in October.

The team finished the regular season by losing 2-3 against the Brooklyn Atlantics followed by a 1-2 series loss to the Cincinnati Reds 7-4, 1-3 and 1-3

The teams batting was steady during the year with some months better than others. The star with the bat for the year was Rookie Left Fielder Buttercup Dickerson. Dickerson belied his young age as he played like a veteran all year to produce an average of .325 from 60 game starts with 271 at bats. These at bats saw him hit the ball 88 times and claim 46 runs and 22 RBI's.

Five year veteran and second year starter Tommy Bond was the starter of choice this season again. He started 54 of the games played during the season and pitched 462.2 innings. He gave up 446 hits and 100 earned runs while working on the mound as he put up an ERA of 1.95 for the season.

The fans of the Atlantics have had another frustrating season as they saw their team finish last in the NL table again. This though hides an improvement as the team managed to get closer the pennant winners than in previous years. The teams best month came in August but this was only a blip in a fairly poor season. The fans will hope that the team can find the right formula again in the off season but do not hold out to much hope.

The team finished the season with a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Caps followed by being swept 0-3 by the Chicago White Stockings 6-7, 0-7 and 11-16

The batting was a struggle during the year but a bright spark with the bat was a combination of Right Fielders Charlie Eden and Dick Higham. Between them they started 59 games and had 259 at bats. These at bats produced 80 hits for the pair as they scored 33 runs and 36 RBI's. The average for the two of them was .308.

Rookie pitcher The Only Nolan was picked as the starter for this season. He pitched 416.1 innings in his 52 game starts. This work load saw him give up 458 hits and 119 earned runs for an ERA of 2.57 for the year.

The fans of the White Stockings are over the moon and celebrating hard as they saw their favourites pick up a 5th NL pennant in 7 years. This was their toughest to win as it was not confirmed until after the last games had been played. They pipped the Boston Red Caps by 1 game after a wonderful August and strong run in over late September and October. The team now face another contest in the MLB Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles. They are currently on 1 win apiece.

The team finished the regular season with a 3-0 sweep over the Brooklyn Atlantics 7-6, 7-0 and 16-11

The batting was strong all season. The hot bat for the season was Rookie Third Baseman Ned Williamson. Williamson played the season like he had been in the Major Leagues for ten years instead of it being his first. Wiilliamson started all 60 games and hit the ball 89 times in 255 at bats. This work saw him claim 41 runs and 39 RBI's for an average of .349. This earned him a surprise batting crown as he was the player with the best average for the year.

Jim Britt was again the starting pitcher for the Chicago White Stockings. He had his worst season since 1872 as his ERA dipped down to 2.77 for the season. This ERA came from 58 game starts where he pitched 481.1 innings and gave up 561 hits and 148 earned runs.

7th October 1878

The fans of the Reds have suffered a frustrating season in which their favourite players flattered to deceive. They managed a couple of good months on their way to third place in the NL but also had months where the form was not good. The fans will hope that the team can find more form next year. This will hopefully start with a good first year player draft.

The team finished the season by winning their final series 2-1 against the Boston Red Caps 4-7, 3-1 and 3-1

The batting was solid all month but couldn't always get enough runs. The star of the batting unit was 8 year veteran Catcher Cal McVey. McVey started 49 games and played in all 60 for 221 at bats. He clipped the ball into space 69 times to score 28 runs and 32 RBI's. His average for the month was .312 which is about his current career normal.

The pitching was put into the arm of Rookie starter Monte Ward. Ward had a solid first season on the mound. He pitched 476.2 innings in his 57 game starts. This work saw him give up 470 hits and 113 earned runs for an ERA of 2.13.

The fans of the Blues saw their team again finish last in the AL table this year. The team had an excellent start to the year once again but then frustrated their fans by doing their normal mid to end of season form dip. The fans are just hoping for a season where they can see this form dip not happen. The team did manage 25 wins during the season but they were still 4 games behind third place.

The team finished the regular season with a 1-2 series loss against the Baltimore Orioles 2-5, 6-4 and 2-3

The batting had a tough year as they struggled for both hits and runs. The best of the starters was 4 year veteran Third Baseman Bill Hague. Hague started all 60 games and faced 254 pitchers. This plate work saw him claim 74 hits to score 32 runs and 18 hits. His average for the year was .291 which is his best while being a starter.

Will White had a solid first season as the starter for the Cleveland Blues. He started 57 games and pitched 486 innings. He gave up 515 hits and 132 earned runs during this work on the mound during the year. His ERA from this work was 2.44.

The fans of the Athletics are unhappy that their team gave up their AL pennant. What pleased them was it wasn't given up without a fight as they pushed the winning Orioles as hard as they could after the poor start to the season they had. They finished the season poorly which meant they finished 6 games behind the winners. The fans are hoping that the team can get over this pennant loss and play next season with the form they had during the second half of this season.

The final four games of the season saw the team give up the title without a fight as they lost 4-5 against the Baltimore Orioles followed by being swept 0-3 by the St Louis Brown Stockings 4-9, 2-5 and 2-3

The batting was the best in the AL during the whole season. This can be seen by the way that 7 year veteran Second Baseman Paul Hines played during the year. His season had 60 game starts that saw him walk to the plate 266 times. During these plate appearances he hit the ball 88 times for 42 runs and 34 RBI's. His average for the season was .331 which is his second best year of his career after the .338 from last season. What was a surprise to him and also to all Philadelphia Athletics fans was that his form saw him not just win the batting crown for the AL but also pick up the batting triple crown as he also led the home run, 2 scored, and RBI numbers as well.

George Bradley's third season as starter was his worst with the ball since he became starter. This though can be tempered by the fact that most pitchers would love to have a bad season like he had. In the 57 games he started he pitched 472.1 innings while giving up 464 hits and 133 earned runs for an ERA of 2.53
