After a terrific April (16-5), two back to back 13-15 months has me concerned. I am especially concerned with pitching and particularily starting pitching. We only have 6 inter-division games in July (3 x Cubs and 3 x Pirates) so we do not control our own destiny in what has to be considered a weak division.

Batista, Diaz and Lucas are the strength of the rotation, Santiago was 2-3, 5.35 ERA and 1.31 whip in June so seems to improving, but Derek Ryan is currently the weak link (0-3, 13.50 ERA and 2.39 whip in June) and I need to get Hunter Ashe up to the Reds asap. Derek Ryan is out of option years so I will attempt a trade first before waivers. Armando Rico is out for the season.

Reds pre-Trade Deadline Musings

Name: cincinnati_reds.png
Views: 241
Size: 17.5 KB

The Reds are in dire need of a quality starter...

David Batista has 1 Quality Start (QS) in his last 4
Ricardo Diaz has 3 QS in his last 4 starts
Hubert Lucas has 1 QS in his last 4.
Ramon Perez has 0 QS in his last 4
Alejandro Santiago has 1 QS in his last 6.
Our starting pitching is ranked 15 out of 16, not want is necessary for any pennant and post season chase.

What we are going to do..

We have a few players that we considerable moveable that may get us a starter, or be part of a deal to get one.
SP Alejandro Santiago- appears to be struggling since surgery
1B Jeff Williams- a free agent at season's end looking for a huge raise
MR Eduardo Sanchez- a free agent, would like to keep, but .......
MR David Brantley- a free agent, not haveing his greatest season.
C Devin Mesoraco- only if it gets us a quality starter.
3B Nate Tenbrink- now only used as a back up infielder
SS Cole Blankenship- recently acquired, 3rd on the depth chart at short
LF Tony Soriano- not getting the ABs with Robinson healthy OR
LF Trayvon Robinson- getting older and Soriano is a future option
RF Marc Ramirez- no room for Ramirez on the 40 man
MR Jose Fernandez- has some value before he gets too old
MR John Hechavarria- see above.

We can target a few teams that are out of it and see if we can work a deal on a pending Free Agent SP.

SP Jeremy Hellickson, Boston Red Sox, 3-7 4.53 18 GS 1.29 Whip
SP Gabriel Martinez, Cleveland Indians, 8-7 4.54 19 GS 1.34 Whip
SP German Gomez. Houston Astros, 0-3 5.85 ERA, 7 GS 1.95 Whip *
SP Julio Teheran, Chicago Cubs, 4-7 3.59 ERA, 17 GS 1.05 Whip
SP Jorge Gaete, Chicago Cubs, 6-8 4.71 ERA, 18 GS 1.35 Whip
SP Matt Cain, Chicago Cubs, 4-2, 3.06 ERA, 7 GS 1.17 **
SP Aus Smith, San Diego Padres, 2-7, 4.21 ERA, 20 GS, 1.29 Whip
SP Juan Lopez, Atlanta Braves, 2-12, 4.51 ERA, 19 GS, 1.31 Whip
SP Jaime Garcia, St Louis Cardinals, 8-7, 3.08 ERA, 19 GS, 1.24 Whip
SP Tyler Blandford, Miami Marlins, 4-3, 4.24 ERA, 11 GS, 1.18 Whip

* a bit of a gamble, but has a career 4.02 ERA and 1.33 Whip and is only 29 years old.

** has been used more as a MR pitcher in Chicago, has 37 appearances but is 38 years old.

So with any luck we can make a deal....

After 2 straight below .500 months, July was 13-12 and more importantly ended on a 7-3 run to finish strong. Our offense still was pretty good but we added Matt Cain to the rotation for a August and September run. He is 38 years old and unlikely to be resigned, but he can help us down the stretch.

Batista is cold, (0-2, 10.80 ERA, 5 starts 2.12 whip) he needs to be better. Diaz's ERA has dropped every month this year from 5.72 in April to 4.21 in July. Lucas struggled in July with a 7.20 ERA in 5 starts, and Santiago actually had a decent 1.31 whip and his lowest ERA in a month of 5.08. Matt Cain will hopefully bring some stability to the rotation which is inconsistant to the extreme. Could see Walsh and Whinnett before season's end, but for sure both will be on the 40 man roster next season.

Overall, still pleased with the pen, happy to see Miranda back, it will be interesting to see how he recovers after missing 4 months and his rehab. Tony Roman, Alex Caldwell or Larry Scott could all be potential September call ups, but either way all 3 should be invited to training camp on the 40 man roster next season.

4 catchers between AAA and MLB all hitting for average and with pretty good OPS's. Definitely a strength. Will likely have to move one since Cordero will be subject to Rule 5 next season. With Mesoraco signed for 2023-24 seasons and a team option for 2025, we may try to move Cordero.

The only weak bat in the infield lineup is Wil Romero, but he has been a consistant fielder. Tried to move Tenbrink, but he is signed until the end of the 2024 season at $11.0 M with a team option for 2025. Martinez, Gregory, Feliz and Romero are all on the 40 man roster, Nicole will be subject to the Rule 5 draft this winter.

Its starting to become obvious that Trayvon Robinsons numbers are dropping career wize. Prior to this season, his season lows since becoming a full time OF were 28 HRs, 92 RBIs, a .274 batting average and a .914 OPS. Robinson is signed for 1 more season at $17.0 M then a team option for 2025. 26 year old Anderson is becoming a stud, on pace for 41 HRs and 124 RBIs and he is only in his 2nd full season. AAA's Dan Swain will be added to the 40 man roster for next season, although he could be brought up in September if necessary.

With a flurry of trading at the deadline, the Reds pitching prospects have really improved. Ray Hicks was acquired in the John Hechavarria trade with Colorado, Miguel Ochoa was acquired in the Marc Ramirez trade to Miami, Manny Perez was obtained in the deal to get Cain, although we gave up Brantley and OF prospect Martinez. Bayley was acquired in an early July trade with Washington.

After a dreadful month, its hard to find any positives but our starting pitchers ERAs dropped slightly. The Reds went 12-17 for the month of August and started the month with a 3 game lead on Pittsburg and now find ourselves 5 back of those same Pirates.

Hunter Ashe has joined the rotation with the injury to Ricardo Diaz, he was 1-1 with a 4.02 ERA. He had one good start and one aweful so the jury is out on whether he will become a MLB quality starter. David Batista continues to struggle, he was 0-3 with a 7.76 ERA in 6 starts in August, although better than July. Hubert Lucas was a little better with a 2-2 record and 6.46 ERA in 6 starts, but he still needs to get better. Alejandro Santiago continues to improve as the season goes, he was 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in 5 starts with a 1.30 Whip. Matt Cain wasnt spectacular, but was consistant as he was 2-2 with a 4.95 ERA in 6 starts. What really hurts is that Diaz is done for the season just as he was getting hot, he was 2-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 4 August starts. Jorge Garcia will get promoted, as will Ramon Perez. Although Bart Whinnett was not expected to reach the 40 man roster until next season, the Rule 5 draft eligible Whinnett will also get the call up and see if he can help push the Reds into the playoffs.

Alex Caldwell is to new to rate, pitched 1.2 innings for the Reds, Paul De La Rosa struggles in August with a 9.00 ERA in 10 innings, Sanchez as well was not great, he had a 5.56 ERA in 11 innings but a respectable 1.24 whip. Manny Aranda was a bright spot, he was 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA and 1.10 whip in 16 innings as was Ruben Hernandez 1.13 ERA in 8 innings. Workhorse, Jorge Martinez had a 4.05 ERA in 20 innings with a real nice 1.10 whip while Gabriel Miranda appears to have recovered well from his long term injury and had a 2.87 ERA and 1.17 whip in 12 innings. The Reds will call up Jesus Fernandez for the stretch drive. Rule 5 draft eligible Tony Roman will also get the call and added to the 40 man roster.

Andrew Cooper had another good month, hitting .302 with 5 HRs and 14 RBIs, Jeff Williams was even better with his .338, 5 HRs and 19 RBI month. After missing some time with injury, Ramon Mireles came out a swinging, he was .340 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs in 18 games. At 36 years of age, Tenbrink is a nice utility guy and can still swing the bat, he hit .273 with 3 HRs and 11 RBIs in August. When Arthur Kline debuted last year, the expectations for him were not very high, but he has exceeded them all real nicely and hit .299 with 5 HRs and 10 RBIs last month. Wil Romero is mostly a defensive specialist, but contributed with the bat in August hitting .282 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs. The Reds will promote Alfredo Torres, Augusto Feliz, Arturo Martinez, Luis Romero and Millard Gregory from AAA.

Injuries have crept into the outfield and we are going to need to seem other guys help Anderson and Vicente Romero. It was nice to see Romero's bat back in the lineup after his injury and he prompty hit .381 with 1 HR and 3 RBIs in 6 games. Fransisco Reyes stats look good over all but he was not good in August only hitting .100 in 20 at bats. Valentin Picard certainly hit better with the Reds then he did in AAA. Anderson is still the best hitter on the team and he hit .330 with 4 HRs and 14 RBIs in August. Trayvon Robinson will be back in a week, he is definitely having an off season and before he got hurt only hit .203 with 3 HRs and 7 RBIs in 21 August games. Tony Soriano is done for the season, he was heating up in August with a .365 average and 2 HRs and 8 RBIs in only 52 at bats. The Reds will call up Aaron Altherr from AAA but will also add Rule 5 eligible Pablo Moreno and Dan Swain.

The Post Season is starting to look a little out of reach, we are also 9.5 game back in the Wild Card. Assuming that Pittsburg will win 90 games this season, the Reds would have to win 18-19 of their final 22 games this season. A tall order for sure. We have no head to head games left with Pittsburg so we will need some help from around the league.

The Pirates remain on pace for 91 wins, the Reds have 13 games left and will likely need to win 12 to compete for the NL Central without some sort of Pirate collapse. The Wild Card is even a tougher reach, as the Diamondbacks are on pace for 94 wins.
