Cubs get off to a nice start - only 3 back at the two month mark.
Shame to see Austin McHenry out for the season, due to a pre-season injury - and taking some talent hits that will make him a shell of his former self. McHenry was a great player who died young from a brain tumour. Branch Rickey called him "one of the best leftfielders ever". McHenry is a great "what-if" player - and has had a decent run. It's been surprising that there haven't been many of this year's draft picks cracking line-ups...but Cubs 1st rounder Ray Webster is backing up at 1st and LF (due to the McHenry injury), and in limited at bats, is hitting over .390. Nice start. Speaking of nice starts - last year's 1st rounder Nomar Garciaparra is now the Cubs starting third baseman - and providing better defence than his predecesor Willie Kamm - Kamm has been struggling in his new role - but is hitting over .350 when he pinch hits. For the Cubs to contend they will need their pitching (ranked 4th in ERA, runs allowed tied for 5th) to hold up, while getting a boost in hitting (BA ranked 11th, runs scored ranked 11th). Chicago's much improved defence (.972 fielding percentage) puts them 6th in the league - better than the 15th and 16th rankings from previous years. |

Yep - the Tigers are looking strong so far. With two months left in the 1933 season, could both races be over? The Tigers' eight-game lead looks solid, especially with their very strong pitching - but in the NL, the Dodgers are having another juggernaut-like season, and have opened up a 12-game lead over the Braves.
Taking a look at the rookies, the two top guys - Lefty Grove of the Giants and Stan Musial of the White Sox - are in the minors. Grove certainly looks ready for prime time, with a 12-4, 2.35 ERA in AAA, and the Giants (mired in last with a 32-63 record) could use someone to complement Greg Maddux in the rotation. Musial is hitting .274 with 6 homers in AAA, and might be able to help in the White Sox outfield, which has been average at best. But, since both teams are obviously out of the race, the temptation to leave these guys in the minors is probably very strong. The second-overall pick, Johnny Allen of the Reds, is 10-11 with a 4.85 ERA for the big club. Allen's the only player from the top five selections in this year's draft to get a shot at the big leagues thus far with both #4 Hugh Duffy (A's) and #5 Joe Sewell (Indians) sitting in the minors. This year's quest for a triple crown is led by the Yankees' Albert Pujols who is tied for the AL lead in homers with 21, is 5 back in the RBI race with 62 and trails in the batting race by .016 percentage points. Brooklyn ace Frank Funk is having a tremendous season, with 20 wins already (on pace for 34) and with second-place on the wins chart also belonging to a Dodger pitcher Rube Waddell who has 17 wins so far.

The Dodgers are running away with the NL - with a league best 3.13 ERA. Chicago improved it's hitting - but finds itself on the outside looking in again. However, the rebuilding effort seems to be paying off - at least.

To help keep BaTTY up near the top of the page....
Brooklyn wins the World Series - and had one of the more dominating years in BaTTY's history - with a 103-51, finishing 20 games ahead of it's nearest rival -the Giants. It should be noted this was a nice resurgence for the Giants - led by the 1-2 pitching punch of Lefty Grove and Greg Maddux Brooklyn, though - dominated, with a season for the ages from Rube Waddell (31-7, 2.88 ERA), and great seasons from Frank Funk (28-10, 2.64 ERA) and Turk Farrell (23-16, 3.18 ERA). The offence was led by Fred Lynn (.333-15-110) and did well despite a sub-par year for Frank Chance In the AL - the Browns went back to the top of the standings - based on the power game (Ed Cartwright with 31 HR, Max West with 27, Eric Chavez with 23, Dwight Smith with 16 and Tony Oliva with 13 is as close to a "Murderer's Row" as BaTTY has had). The snakebit Yankees ended up 3 out despite another monster season from Albert Pujols and a solid 4-man pitching rotation. Some pity for Cleveland's Hal Trosky - a one man show for the cellar dwelling Tribe, who led the AL in RBIs and average, and finished 5th in HR. This team needs pitching help, stat. The NL continues to stand for "No Longballs" with Tim Salmon leading the circuit with 19. Even scarier is that three players tied for 8th in NL in dingers - with 9.... The upcoming draft looks like a mixed bag - no obvious superstars - but it appears there will be a wide range of decent players for first round picks - but when Reggie Smith appears to be the best of the lot.... |

After winning their first World Series the Tigers went back to 500 ( 77-77 )
The did well hitting finishing 2nd in BA lead by Big Sam Thompson .387-15-101 and Long Levi Meyerle .317-7-114. The pitching staff took a tumble but one bright spot was youngster Bruce Sutter in his third season going 21-16. A total of 64 wins and 3.30 ERA and he is only 25. |

1935 Amateur Draft
The 1935 draft featured a mixed bag of talent - nothing spectacular, but some very solid players - including (finally) an assortment of solid arms even if none are Hall-of-Fame caliber talents. The top pick (by the cpu for the Indians) was Reggie Smith, a five-tool switch-hitting center fielder who joins an already talent-crowded outfield for the Tribe (they've got Darryl Strawberry, Roy Sievers and Jose Canseco already). The next two picks were spent on pitchers Al Hollingsworth and Ed Reulbach, neither of them spectacular, but both probably good enough to hold down a rotation spot for the foreseeable future. The Phils selected Joe Gordon, one of the best second basemen to come along in BaTTY history, and backstop Joe Collins finished off the top five, with his selection by the White Sox.
Round 1: Cleveland pick: CF Reggie Smith Cincinnati pick: P Al Hollingsworth St. Louis (N) pick: P Ed Reulbach Philadelphia (N) pick: 2B Joe Gordon Chicago (A) pick: C Pat Collins Philadelphia (A) pick: P Andy Messersmith Washington pick: P Antonio Osuna Boston (N) pick: 1B Joe Collins Detroit pick: 3B Gregg Jefferies Pittsburgh pick: CF Lenny Green Chicago (N) pick: 1B Chick Gandil New York (N) pick: RF Heinie Mueller Boston (A) pick: CF Carl Furillo New York (A) pick: LF Danny Cater St. Louis (A) pick: 2B Nellie Fox Brooklyn pick: LF Bill O'Neill Round 2 : Cleveland pick: LF Brian Dayett Cincinnati pick: SS Kurt Stillwell St. Louis (N) pick: SS Jerry Kenney Philadelphia (N) pick: 2B Luis Aguayo Chicago (A) pick: CF Mickey Brantley Philadelphia (A) pick: SS Germany Smith Washington pick: 2B Eddie Grant Boston (N) pick: SS Bob Meacham Detroit pick: RF Jack Graham Pittsburgh pick: CF Dave Stegman Chicago (N) pick: SS Jerry Kindall New York (N) pick: 1B Marv Blaylock Boston (A) pick: RF John Powers New York (A) pick: LF Dave Meier St. Louis (A) pick: P Windy McCall Brooklyn pick: LF Mike Kelly Round 3 : Cleveland pick: 2B Bob Boken Cincinnati pick: P Bob Apodaca St. Louis (N) pick: P Ramiro Mendoza Philadelphia (N) pick: P Ted Breitenstein Chicago (A) pick: 3B Clarence Huber Philadelphia (A) pick: 1B Art Mahan Washington pick: P Rick Waits Boston (N) pick: CF Count Sensenderfer Detroit pick: P Ken Dayley Pittsburgh pick: C Mike Hines Chicago (N) pick: P Bill Castro New York (N) pick: P Fred Breining Boston (A) pick: SS Jose Nieves New York (A) pick: P Doc White St. Louis (A) pick: P Scott Terry Brooklyn pick: P Carl Morton Round 4 : Cleveland pick: C Charlie Hargreaves Cincinnati pick: 3B Fritz Knothe St. Louis (N) pick: RF George Binks Philadelphia (N) pick: P Bob Cain Chicago (A) pick: P Bob Wells Philadelphia (A) pick: P Dick Stigman Washington pick: LF Nyls Nyman Boston (N) pick: P Brian Boehringer Detroit pick: P Melido Perez Pittsburgh pick: P Elmer Myers Chicago (N) pick: P Bill Butler New York (N) pick: P Doug Bochtler Boston (A) pick: P Salome Barojas New York (A) pick: P Jim Winn St. Louis (A) pick: P Ed Poole Brooklyn pick: P Steve Mura

In a classic for the ages - the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the first Subway Series 4 games to 3.
Games 4 and 5 went to extra innings - with the Dodgers taking both 7-6 in 13 innings in Game 4 and 8-5 in 10 innings in the following game. While the Yanks eeked out a 4-3 win in Game 6 - Game 7 started looking like a blowout for the Dodgers. Gaylord Perry - who won Game 3 with a 5 hit shutout faced Turk Farrell - whom he beat. Fred Lynn ended all hope of a shutout with a 3-run homer in the first. 3-0 Dodgers. Lynn's second appearance at the plate meant another ball out of Ebbets Field - that was followed by a manufactured run (Chance singled, advanced on a walk, stole third and scored on a groundout). 5-0 Dodgers. The Yankees finally found their bats in the top of the 6th. Thurman Munson cracked a 3-run shot to deep right field and cut the lead to 5-3. It stayed that way to the top of the ninth. Munson doubled to start the inning. John McGraw followed with another double, scoring Munson. Brooklyn, amazingly, kept Farrell in. Pinch hitter Pepper Martin walked and they both moved up a base on Pedro Garcia's groundout. That set up Oddibe McDowell's single up the middle, scoring Martin and McGraw. McDowell was thrown out at 2nd, and Farrell induced a fly ball from Mattingly to end the inning. But the damage was done. The Yankees were up 6-5 and were three outs away. In came Billy Wagner for the Yanks. The 1st overall pick in 1931 had 11 saves and a 1.29 ERA this year, and only 1 blown save. It was over before Yankee fans knew what hit them. A single by Jo-Jo White A single by pinch hitter Paddy Baumann and a double down the line by John Valentin - White and Baumann crossed the plate and the series went to the Dodgers. Fred Lynn walks away with MVP honours with 3 homers, 12 RBIs and a .444 average. League MVP Albert Pujols was strangely silent in the postseason only hitting .160 with 4 RBIs. The draft looks like a good mix, with some good pitchers, which is nice for a change. |

1936 Amateur Draft
The results of the 1936 draft - the first draft in a while to have two pitchers right at the top (which says something about the quality of the pitchers in recent draft classes). Dutch Leonard went to the Reds at the top, with Billy Swift going to the Cards with the second pick. The big winners may end up being the Senators, who tapped Babe Herman third. Babe is easily the best player in the entire draft class, though no one can really argue with the Tigers' selection of 3B Jimmy Collins with the fourth pick.
Overall, a draft class that is fairly deep, but short on can't miss stars with only - probably - Herman & Collins fitting that description. Round 1: Cincinnati pick: P Dutch Leonard St. Louis (N) pick: P Bill Swift Washington pick: 1B Babe Herman Detroit pick: 3B Jimmy Collins Philadelphia (A) pick: 3B Jeff Cirillo St. Louis (A) pick: C Bill Freehan Philadelphia (N) pick: RF Sam Bowens Chicago (A) pick: P Al Gettel Boston (N) pick: LF Jim McTamany Cleveland pick: 2B Benny McCoy Boston (A) pick: C Tex Erwin New York (N) pick: LF Ken McMullen Chicago (N) pick: RF Darryl Hamilton Pittsburgh pick: 2B Jerry Coleman Brooklyn pick: 2B Glenn Beckert New York (A) pick: C Mike Lieberthal Round 2 : Cincinnati pick: P Troy Percival St. Louis (N) pick: LF Joe Lis Washington pick: RF Ernie Orsatti Detroit pick: 1B Denny Mack Philadelphia (A) pick: RF John Munyan St. Louis (A) pick: 2B Tim Flannery Philadelphia (N) pick: 1B John Carney Chicago (A) pick: 2B Charley Radbourn Boston (N) pick: SS Andujar Cedeno Cleveland pick: CF Russ McKelvy Boston (A) pick: 2B Al Myers New York (N) pick: 3B Babe Ellison Chicago (N) pick: C Ellie Rodriguez Pittsburgh pick: C George Mitterwald Brooklyn pick: 2B Tony Taylor New York (A) pick: RF Frank Baumholtz Round 3 : Cincinnati pick: 2B Rafael Landestoy St. Louis (N) pick: CF Dan Gladden Washington pick: CF Wally Rehg Detroit pick: P Russ Bauers Philadelphia (A) pick: RF Max Marshall St. Louis (A) pick: 1B Bob Boyd Philadelphia (N) pick: CF Jesus Figueroa Chicago (A) pick: C Rich Rowland Boston (N) pick: C Joe Girardi Cleveland pick: P Allen Sothoron Boston (A) pick: P Mark Dewey New York (N) pick: C Roxy Walters Chicago (N) pick: P Ernie McAnally Pittsburgh pick: P Jack Sharrott Brooklyn pick: P Al Mays New York (A) pick: SS Jack Littrell Round 4 : Cincinnati pick: 1B Ivy Griffin St. Louis (N) pick: P Bill Lee Washington pick: C Carlos Hernandez Detroit pick: P Bill Travers Philadelphia (A) pick: P Tony Kaufmann St. Louis (A) pick: 2B Mike Champion Philadelphia (N) pick: P Mike Williams Chicago (A) pick: P Mike LaCoss Boston (N) pick: C Johnny Grabowski Cleveland pick: P Tom Brewer Boston (A) pick: P Jim Bibby New York (N) pick: P Walt Terrell Chicago (N) pick: P Mark Knudson Pittsburgh pick: RF Joe Martin Brooklyn pick: P Tommie Sisk New York (A) pick: P Bill Dietrich

Between being out of my usual routine by being in training for a week, being sick for a week, and Thanksgiving, it seems like forever since I've given the Senators some attention. I miss the Batty....hope to get back in the swing of things starting this week!
