A few of Florentino's early years opponents

Here's the files for Cardenas and Napoles.

Enjoy them for whatever they may be worth. I got some more of these early Florentino opponents I'll post in the next days I hope.

Stephan Anghern

Stephan Anghern - Swiss Cruiser; fought 2 distance title fights with Rocchigiani (both losses). Record of 19(10)-5-1

I feel safe in saying that Anghern is best big man to ever come out of the Swiss Alps - which isn't really saying a whole lot

Thanks on both counts SAL - much appreciated!

EDIT:

I looked at the file and like it. I think that I will switch to that one but it did make me feel pretty good about my ratings. My version was pretty close with the exception that I was not as charitable on defense and few other areas due to my sense that he was very careful about who he fought and mixed alot of chumps into the record. Although that may not have been a fair assesment; everyone fights chumps but most do it at the begining of their career. He jumped right into the title on his fourth pro fight so I supose that I should have cut him a bit more slack. Also, I can't say that he benefitted from too many hometown decisions given the stoppage ratio.

Anyway, thanks again!

Cheers

Maybe I missed something or he is burried under one of his allias monikers. Even fighting often less than par opponents, 43 and zip is still impressive. No bad nights (or a lot of payoffs; I must admit that I am totaly ignorant to the Thai Mafia, if there is one )
For those interested, his real name is: Saengmuangnoi Lukchapormasak.
He turned professional as Samson Elite-Gym, and then changed his names several times as he changed gyms and sponsors. His Fight Fax "Boxing Record Book" id number is 015533.

Thanks for clearing that up. I hadn't heard the Samson Elite-Gym one yet. I'm thankful all boxers don't follow the same pattern!

I looked in one of my old databases and came up with the attached rating. Anyone want to play test it?

A few of Florentino's early years opponents

Pablo Berrios Cuba Rating 1
Middleweight 1957
0 wins / 1 loss / 0 draw / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del SEsto

Only appearance in BoxREc was a 2nd round KO at the hands of Florentino Fernandez.

Victor Francia Cuba Rating 1
Middleweight 1957
0 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Only fight in BoxRec was a 6 round decision loss to Florentino Fernandez.

Marino Gonzalez Cuba Rating 1
Featherweight 1950-60
8 wins / 6 losses / 1 draw / 4 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del sEsto

Compiled an 8-1-1 mark from Sept 1950 thru Sept 1952, before Marino started fighting some competition of any caliber and then could not survive in the ring. First came a 10 round decision loss to Baby Cochet(21-11-5,3) January 1955 after not fighting for almost 2-1/2 years. He layed of for almost 2 more years again before going back to the ring in December 1956 to square off against Angel Robinson Garcia who was 22-1-0 at the time. Garcia KO'd Gonzalez in the 5th round. Then came a 4th round KO to Wilfredo Hurst(26-11-4,11) and a 3rd round KO to Florentino Fernandez in the 1957. Gonzalez fought 1 more time, in January 1960, loosing his 5th straight fight and 4th by KO to Raul Carabeo(9-1-0,7). That was it for Marino.

Alberto Bisbe Cuba Rating 2
Lightweight 1955-60
18 wins / 10 losses / 3 draws / 9 KO

Hometown: Havana, Cuba
Birthplace: Santiago de Cuba

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Albert won his first 14 fights from 1955-56 against the usual array of local fighters without much experience. The first 8 fights were against oppenents with combined records at the time of 1-5-0! Then he fougth and defeated guys like Alberto Hernandez(1-12-5,0), Felix Alfredo Triana(2-16-1,0), Nilo Blanco(2-10-1,0), Alberto Robinson(5-7-3,0), and Alfonso Estrada(1-8-1,0). Finally for his 14th win he defeated Juan (Baby Face) Medina(20-15-7,12).

The rest of Bisbe's career went 4-10-3,3KO's. One of those 4 wins was a noteworthy one in February 1958 as he defeated Baby Cochet(21-11-5,3) for the Cuban Light Welterweight Title in a 12 round decision. After a win against Alberto Robinson and a 10 round decision loss to Wilfredo Hurst(26-11-4,11), he then lost a 12 round decision and the Cuban Light Welterweight Title to Baby Diogenes Sagarra. After that, in December 1958, he was KO'd in the 3rd round by Florentino Fernandez. He finished his career loosing 2 fights to Kid Fichique(46-12-4,28) and 2 fights to Pedro Miranda(43-12-1,32) with a victory against Tony Armenteros(25-17-4,8) sandwiched in between those 4 losses.

Connecticut Boy

John Scully (MW,SMW,LHW) (Rated here as a Middleweight)

38(21)-11-0
Hometown - South Windsor, Connecticut

Trainer - Russ Anber
Manager - Ray Turner

John Scully had two distinct phases to his career. Phase one consisted of 22 fights exclusively within the middleweight division. Scully amassed a record of 20(15)-2-0 as an exclusive middleweight and claimed the New England Middleweight title along the way.

Phase two saw Scully go 18(6)-9-0 as he stepped up in both weight and competition. During this period, Scully fought as both a super middleweight and a light heavyweight. His three best bouts were likely the two distance fights that he had with Ernest Mateen and one with Micheal Nunn * for the WBO Super Middleweight Title. Unfortunately, all three efforts were losses with Scully collecting one more decision win against Cleveland Nelson shortly after the second Mateen fight before he called it quits.

Scully resides in the Hartford, CT area today and acts as trainer to fellow Hartford boxer and Heavyweight Lawrence Clay-Bey

* I was fortunate enough to see Scully-Nunn at Foxwoods in '95. Nunn clearly was the superior fighter that night but our hometown boy made us proud going 12 rounds and never backing down. I don't have my score cards from that fight but I do remember having Nunn by a smaller margin as the winner. I think I called two rounds even that everyone else on the planet gave to Nunn. That's what hometown advantages are all about.
