Gus Niarhos
Here's a fairly rare photo of catcher, Gus Niarhos, with the major league Phillies, although he
spent most of his time in that organization with their top farm club. Gus played just 10 games in the big leagues with the Phillies over his final two seasons in the majors, 1954 and 1955. He was a prototypical back-up catcher, topping 100 at-bats only three times in a nine season career that began in 1946 after the close of World War Two. His 228 at-bats with the 1948 Yankees was by far his most active season. He hit .252 lifetime with only one career home run. (in 1951 with the white sox he homered off the Yankees' Bob Kuzava, who would later be Gus' teammate and batterymate with the Phillies. Last edited by dennis_keith; 08-13-2017 at 05:57 PM. |

Donald Gross Ex Pirate and RED dies at age 86.
Don, 3rd of 12 children, was born on June 30, 1931 in Weidman to Charles and Agnes (Grisdale) Gross. He graduated from Weidman High School with the Class of 1949. Following high school, Don attended Michigan State University on a basketball scholarship until he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds after his freshman year of college. Don had a 13-year career in professional baseball as a left-handed pitcher. Don pitched in 1950-1952 and 1954-1963, with time out in most of 1952 and all of 1953 while in military service. Don was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 21, 1955, with the Cincinnati Reds. Don played 6 years in the major leagues with the Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. In his major league career, Don pitched 398 innings over 145 games with a 3.73 ERA, 20 wins, 10 saves, 9 complete games and 230 K’s. Don married the love of his life, June Bernadette McGrath on December 28, 1957 in Bellevue, Kentucky. June preceded him in death on November 19, 2013 after 56 great years of marriage. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, yard work, golf, playing pool with son David, puzzles, and playing cards. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and watching the grandkids sporting and school events.http://www.clarkfuneralchapel.com/bo...d/obituary.php

There have been no deaths of players ranked by Wikipedia in their 125 oldest players list for over three months, since the passing of Ed Mierkowicz on May 19. These men are all 88 to 99 years of age.(#1. Bobby Doerr - 99 years, 4 1/2 months; #125. Don Larsen - 88 years, 1/2 month).

Hope they all last as long as possible......being born is a terminal death sentence that all of us are sentenced to.....i would like to postpone my hearing on this subject as long as possible....hope Mr Doerr crosses the 100 barrier.....a very nice man indeed

Jim Ellis appeared in the Fritsch "One Year Winners" card set. I do not have anything of him in a Brewers uni.

1963 Reds Spring Roster
Attached is the Reds Spring Roster from the April, 1963 issue of Baseball Digest.
Lumpkin, I must caution that what you are calling "spring rosters" may be lists of players in uniform for spring training games. For example, your "spring roster" list for 1962 contains some players who were on the 1962 Reds spring roster and others who were non-roster invitees to the Reds' spring camp that year. Baseball Digest published only the players who were on the major league roster. |
