21 year old Bob Gibson strikes out 9, while allowing just two hits, in a World Series masterpiece. The Indians win easily over Curt Simmons and the Dodgers 5-0.

An almost completely opposite result in game two. Koyama dominates the Indians, allowing just 1 run and 4 hits, as the Dodgers tie the series with a 5-1 win.

Down 5-0, the Dodgers Carlos Bernier hits a 2 out grand slam in the ninth. All of Cleveland is well aware that’s only worth 4 runs though, and when Minnie Minoso grounds out, the Indians win game three, 5-4.

The Dodgers bats catch upto Bob Gibson in game four. Gibson walks eight, gives up seven hits, and allows five runs. A 5-1 Dodgers final.

Koyama again dominates, and Wes Westrum knocks in three runs, as the Dodgers route the Indians 9-0 and take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Joe Bauman hits 2 home runs, knocking in 4, including the decisive runs during the eighth inning, in a 6-3 Indians win forcing a game 7.

GAME 7

Gibson struggles during the first 3 innings, allowing 7 base runners, but gets out of each inning before any real damage is done. The skies then open up, stopping the game for 53 minutes!

When the delay ends, Gibson returns to the mound, but probably shouldn't have. He gives up back to back singles to Pidge Browne and Wes Westrum. Both players scored when Carlos Bernier knocked them in with a 2-out single. A fatigued Gibson was removed from the game.

The Indians got 1 run back in the seventh, but the Dodgers responded right away to keep the lead at 2.

Curt Simmons left the game to the Dodgers bullpen, who did not disappoint. Jack Sanford allowed just 1 hit over the final 2 innings to earn the save, as the Dodgers win another World Series with a 3-1 Win.

Quite the dynasty going for the Dodgers right now. I hope the Yankees can get back to the World Series soon, but it looks tough with Detroit.

Despite only one appearance, and no World Series wins in almost 30 years, the Yankees are 2nd in appearances, and no one has won more titles. It's about time for this mediocre squad to turn the corner.

1957-58 Offseason News and Notes

The 2nd straight sub par draft class. There isn't really anyone here that I am truly excited about entering the league. Frank Howard is picked 1st overall, and he's a solid pick, probably won't be a star though.

No Hall of Fame inductions again. No nominee's this time either. I like the game being stingy.

A interesting trade occurred just before the new season started, so I'm including it in the uneventful offseason post.

Slugger Norm Zauchin heads to Detroit, for 11th overall selection in this years draft, Ron Fairly. Zauchin platooned last season with young first baseman Jim Gentile. He's 2 years removed from hitting 50 home runs. This move gives Detroit the game's best offense. A order containing Mays, Mantle and Zauchin is scary, even to the Dodgers.

Wow, kinda surprised the whole baseball on the West Coast happened and was just a blurb. The current reigning dynasty just move to California...

Edit: What happened to Mays that his injury history is "wrecked". He's played 295 out of a possible 308 games the last 2 seasons

Just being lazy with no blurb about the current kings of baseball moving as far away as possible!

Mays may have just been created with a high injury rating. He's actually been hurt a number of times. Not many in recent years, but he's suffered 10 separate injuries that required more then a month of recovery time

1958 MLB Regular Season

The 1st MLB game in California is between the 2 teams who relocated there. The Dodgers destroyed the Giants 11-1 at Seals Stadium in San Francisco in front of 22,776 fans. Those two teams actually played 6 straight games over 6 days, 3 in each teams ball park. Almost like a playoff series. The Dodgers won 4 of them.

Opening day in SF.

It’s pretty cool to see the names of players who are appearing on the leaderboard this season. It seems like the name players are finally breaking out. Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, Harmon Killebrew, Hank Aaron, Orlando Cepeda, Frank Robinson, Roger Maris. All having great seasons.

As we hit the all-star break, im happy to see that the World Series matchup I want to see is a possibility. Detroit and LA both lead their respective leagues.

Wow, on the eve of the all-star game, the Giants and White Sox strike up a deal bringing a young star to the windy city.
Roger Maris has been excellent in his short career. The 23 year old is a 3 time all-star, with a gold glove and a ROY award in his pocket. He heads to the White Sox, in hopes of revitalizing a once proud franchise who let their team get old. The Giants get a good prospect in Gonzalez, but his upside is Roger Maris, who they already had….

Ernie Banks is on the move again.
The Dodgers add a potential impact bat, giving up overachiever Ted Lepcio. Banks upside far exceeds Lepcio, who has hit for power playing 2nd base. This is a nice gamble for the Dodgers.

As September roles around, the Tigers have completely faded, and the Orioles have a big lead in the AL. The Dodgers are dominating the NL like normal. Barring a miracle, it’s another Orioles, Dodgers World Series.

Willie Mays wins the Triple Crown!!!!

What a season for Harmon Killebrew! 57 home runs, which is the 4th highest in history. Only Gehrig and Ruth have hit more. Harmon is only 22 years old. I’m very excited to watch his career play out!

The Dodgers beat the Orioles in the 55 and 56 series on their way to 4 straight World Series titles. No team has ever won 5 straight. The 1940 St. Louis Browns, now known as the Baltimore Orioles, lost to the Cubs in their bid for a 5th straight title, while the 1945 Reds did not play in the 45 series, but went on to win the next two, to claim 6 titles in 7 years.

Hank Thompson and Bill Ni****a will miss this series for the Orioles. Both are big losses. They need pitcher Don Kaiser(who won 31 times this year)to win 3 games, and hope they can steal a win in one of the other 4 games.

31 game winner Don Kaiser gives up a 2 out, 3 run home run to Roy Sievers, in the 5th inning. A mistake you can’t make when Curt Simmons is pitching. The Dodgers take the opener 4-1. A World Series record 92,641 people attended game 1 at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

Vic Wertz, pinching hitting in the seventh inning, hit a go ahead solo shot, to give Baltimore the 3-2 lead. Dick Brodowski eight strong innings, out duelling Masaaki Koyama, as the Orioles tie the series with the 3-2 win.

Wertz

Home Runs by Charlie Maxwell and Bobby Hoffman propel the Dodgers to a 6-2 win in game 3. LA starter Robin Roberts allowed just 5 hits.

A Joe Adcock 3 run shot gives Baltimore the early lead. The Orioles eventually go up 7-0, which is needed, as Ernie Banks hits 2 home runs late. It’s not enough though, and Baltimore ties the series with the 7-5 victory.

The teams combined for 7 hits, in a wonderfully played game 5. The most important hit came off the bat of seldom used SS Don Buddin, who in the bottom of the ninth, with 2 out, doubled home Jerry Kindall. The Orioles walk off the Dodgers with a 2-1 win and are just one game away from ending the defending champs run.

Buddin

The Dodgers will not go quietly into that dark night. They score 5 times in 3 innings. The lead is too big for the Orioles to overcome, and again, the World Series will be decided by a seventh game.

GAME 7

Two of baseballs best pitchers just put on a show for the ages. Don Kaiser and Curt Simmons each pitched about as good a game as anyone has ever pitched.

In the top of the 1st, the Orioles got 2 hits on Simmons, but a strike out of Roy McMillan ended any sort of rally.

Neither team was able to get more then 1 runner on in any inning for the next 8 and a half innings. There were no home runs, so game 7 of the World Series headed to extra innings, tied at 0.

Ernie Banks hit a 1 out double in the tenth, but he’s stranded on third when Kaiser, still pitching, got Spider Jorgensen to fly out.

Joe Adcock reached third base in the 11th, but Curt Simmons, still pitching stranded him striking out back to back hitters.

Kaiser and Simmons are both replaced after 11 amazing innings. The bullpen’s did not provide a let up…until……….

Three outs later, the season was over. What a World Series. What pitching performances. All hail the new Champions!

Wanted to let you know how supremely awesome I think this is.

I have been reading through (I'm only up to 1907 so far - the glory days of Ed Delahunty and Rube Waddell) and love it. I had to jump to the last page to make sure you were still updating - didn't want to spend hours reading only to see the story had gone inactive!

1958-59 Offseason News and Notes

A star studded 1958 draft. There are a lot of great names and great players available. Top of the list is Mickey Lolich to the Giants. It will be weird seeing Carl Yastrzemski in Yankee pinstripes! I love Sadaharu Oh joining Roger Maris in Chicago!

Griffith
was the dominant pitcher on a team that will go down in history as one of the most dominant ever. He’s arguably one of the top 5 pitchers of all-time. A great career, and deservingly in the HOF.

I've been asked about the HOF templates, and making them available.

Here it is. OOTP HOF TEMPLATE

It is a photoshop file, so i would guess you need that to open and edit the file.

The only instructions:
1. Open the browser option in game for the player you wish to use. Copy and paste the players portrait into the open .psd file
2. Chose the erase tool, and erase the background of the players portrait.
3. Copy the layer style of the "Face" layer, and paste that layer onto the new players portrait.
4. Select the Filter Stylize option under the filter's menu, and click emboss. Choose whatever level you like.

I believe that's it.

1959 MLB Regular Season

Bob Gibson needs elbow ligament reconstruction surgery and will miss the next 13 months. His 40-12 record over his first two seasons was pretty exciting, but I doubt he’ll ever be the same again. This is a major injury, and It’s not uncommon to see setbacks, and retirements with this sort of injury.

Gibson

The Dodgers success has been due to pitching, but the offense has supported the pitching pretty well over the years. 35 year old Gil Hodges just hit his 400th career home run. Since becoming a starter in 1946, Hodges has hit between 22 and 39 home runs each season. True consistency.

Hodges

Another nice low key move by the Dodgers.
In the same vein as the Ernie Banks trade, the Dodgers acquire Duke Snider. A guy who has good ratings, but hasn’t really lived upto them. Banks has worked out greatly in LA. I suspect this will be the same.

I guess Roger Maris won’t be playing with Sadaharu Oh.

Maris goes to Boston, who are very much in the pennant race. This is a terrible move by the White Sox. Maris is 24, and playing well. Don’t see what they are getting in Gaines and Balsamo. Expect the White Sox to contend for the leagues worst the rest of the year.

Good news for Red Sox fans. Looks like Carl Yastrzemski won’t be putting on pinstripes anytime soon.

The Yankees have traded the 19 year old to Milwaukee where he will play alongside star Hank Aaron. The Yankees get all-star SS Claudio Solano back, and they are in contention for the pennant, so it’s a big move, and I understand it. Nice deal for both teams.

I don’t know how to make this sound original. The Dodgers have already clinched the pennant on September 1st. They are just so much better then the rest of the NL, it’s not really competitive. The AL is also pretty much decided. The Boston Red Sox have a 13 game lead on Washington and New York, and only a massive collapse will stop their first pennant in 14 years.

Sandy Koufax goes down for 7 months with a shoulder inflammation. He’s 22-5 on the season, with a 1.28 ERA. I’m sure this will affect his ratings. That’s a long time off and an arm injury.

Koufax
