Although he was a great depth option, we are running out of room for Richard Jeni and we will see if we can get some offers in a trade for him. Andrew Carey was a pretty good player for the Reds 2 years ago, but he has certainly stepped backwards since 2020 when he hit 33 HRs for the Reds, I don't see him being a future OF for us.

The 30 year old Jeni hit .288 with 13 HRs and 47 RBIs in 88 games, the 29 year old Perez hit .293 with 14 HRs and 76 RBIs in 139 AAA games. The 27 year old Mireles hit .249 with 11 HRs and 55 RBIs in 104 games, the 20 year old Cruz was 3-3 with 27 saves, a 2.51 ERA in 55 A games, the 20 year old Santana hit .195 with 7 HRs and 35 RBIs in 87 A games.

The Reds have traded C Gonzalo Rosa and minor league C Esteban Perieria to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for REL Gabriel Miranda and minor league OF Chris Brooks. Boston Red Sox RF Pat Williams was named the AL Rookie of the Year. The 23 year old Williams hit .327 with 20 HRs and 63 RBIs in 109 games.

Colorado Rockies 3B Clarence Barnard was named the NL Rookie of the Year. The 25 year old Barnard hit .311 with 33 HRs and 105 RBIs in 148 games.

The Reds are not going to chase any free agents this season, we are satisfied with the vets that stayed and are going to give a few young guys a chance. Of course will will look for some minor league free agents and take a peak at the Rule 5 draft for hidden gems.

The Reds traded minor league OF Archie McDonah, minor league SS Carlos Santana, minor league SP Javier Jimenez and minor league SP Manuel Flores to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for 1B Andrew Cooper and minor league SP Bart Whinnett. The 25 year old McDonah hit .291 with 16 HRs and 60 RBIs in 104 AAA games, the 20 year old Santana hit .195 with 7 HRs and 35 RBIs in 87 A games, the 28 year old Jimenez was 16-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 20 AAA starts, the 26 year old Flores was 12-5 with a 4.82 ERA in 21 AAA starts. The Reds recieve the 26 year old Cooper who hit .297 with 26 HRs and 92 RBIs for the Rays in 123 games, the 22 year old Whinnett was 5-4 with a 4.71 ERA in 22 AA starts and should be one of our top prospects next season.

With recent developments and 2 AAA pitchers that were expected to take a shot at making the Reds just traded, I have decided to see if I can find a reliable 5th starter on Free Agency.

I offer Alejandro Santiago a 4 year deal at $6,900,000 per season with the 4th year at a team option.

There is a little risk in potentially signing Santiago after missing most of the end of 2021 with an serious arm injury, and teams passed on him last season as a free agent. Santiago is only 29 and could turn into a very good signing.

The San Fransisco Giants have signed SP Kris Medlen to a 2 year, $30.2M deal. The 37 year old Medlen was 3-2 with a 3.61 ERA in 12 starts for the Seattle Mariners in 2022.

The Boston Red Sox have re-signed CF James McFadden to a 5 year, $79.0M deal. The 29 year old McFadden hit .281 with 23 HRs and 83 RBIs in 125 games for the Red Sox in 2022.

The Reds have a couple of spots open on the 40 man roster, although I have given an offer to a Starting Pitcher in Free agency. Would consider a depth outfielder that I can use as 5th option on the Reds.

The Chicago Cubs have signed SP Matt Cain to a 1 year, $2.5 M deal. The 38 year old Cain was 6-11 with a 5.72 ERA in 27 starts for the San Fransisco Giants.

The Cincinnati Reds have announced they have place MR Mario Moran on the 60 day DL. The 29 year old Moran was injured March 9th and has been diagnosed with a torn flexor tendon (elbow) and is expected to miss 8-9 months. Moran was 1-2 with 2 saves, a 4.52 ERA in 59 games last season for the Reds.

The Cincinnati Reds have announced that C Devin Mesoraco will miss up to 2 weeks with a mild hip strain. The 34 year old Mesoraco was injured March 16th. Mesoraco hit .253 with 21 HRs and 53 RBIs in 131 games last year for the Reds.

April 2023 MLB News and Transactions



The Cincinnati Reds have claimed MR Roberto Gonzalez from the Cleveland Indians. The 32 year old Gonzalez was 1-1 with a 9.34 ERA in 40 games split between the Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. This will enable us to put SP Hunter Ashe back into AAA for the season.

Cincinnati Reds owner, Jim Castellini has set his expectation that the Reds should be a .500 team this season.

BNN has published its 2023 Top 100 Prospects List. The Cincinnati Reds have SP Bart Whinnett at 9th in the Top 10. In the Top 100 besides Whinnett are:

David Colwill- our scout found Colwill in a Canadian High School league in Quebec. The kid features a cutter and a change up and will likely start in Billings (R)

Pablo Hernandez- expect Hernandez to spend some time in AA and eventually AAA this season. Hernandez was the Reds 28th round pick in 2019.

Craig Henson- could be ready for a move to AA, but will start in Bakersfield (A). Henson signed as a minor league Free agent with the Reds in 2020.

Miguel Angel Cruz- could spend the full season in AA this year. Had 27 saves in A ball last year. Was ranked the 21st overall prospect in 2022, and was acquired in a trade with the Tigers in Oct 2022.

Jorge Garcia- Should spend most of the season in AAA and could be part of the rotation in 2024. Garcia was the Reds 3rd round pick in 2015.

Anibal Sanchez- should split time between AA and AAA this season. I expect him to be on the 40 man roster next season. Sanchez was the Reds 2018 2nd round pick.

Roberto Mora- could split time between A and AA this season. Mora was recieved in a trade with the Detroit Tigers in Dec 2022.

Hunter Ashe- is already on the 40 man roster and will start the season in AAA. Ashe was the Cleveland Indians 1st round (13th overall) pick in the 2018 draft and was traded to the Reds in July 2022 in a block buster deadline deal with the Indians.

Terry Johnson- Is expected to pitch in AA this season, has started but has only 2 pitches. Johnson was the Reds 4th round, 157th overall pick in the 2020 draft.

Javier Campos- could reach AA this season, but will start in Bakersfield (A). Campos was part of the trade in Nov 2022 that saw 1B Andrew Cooper and SP Bart Whinnett arrive.

Rudolph Wareham- will likely start with the Dayton Dragons (A) and could reach AA this season. Wareham was another scout discovery in Canada, this time in 2021.

Gabriel Correa- will start again in R ball with the Goodyear Reds. A 6' 5" catcher that was the 47th overall pick (supplemental round) of the 2021 draft.

Augusto Feliz- should be in AAA all season, could see some action at the MLB level as well. Feliz was the Reds 1st round, 28th overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Dan Swain- Swain got a small taste of AAA last season (24 games, 79 AB, .354 Ave, 6 HRs and 20 RBIs) and should be there full time this season. Swain should be part of the 40 man roster by next season.

Jeff White- Expects to be a AA player this season, but could see time in A ball again as well. White was the Reds 2022 1st round, 23rd overall pick in the draft.

Carlos Bonilla- Is currently on the 40 man roster and 3rd on the Reds catcher depth chart. He has had limited AAA experience (10 games) and should play the full season in AAA this year. Bonilla was the Reds 29th round pick in the 2018 draft.

After a terrific start to the season, not too many stats or trends that are a concern. Would still like to see a bit more patience, but lets face it we are a power hitting team. Pitching and especially starting pitching has much improved, we already had a pretty good bullpen last season so the starters needed to be better and so far so good.

Wil Romero off to a slow start, but the rest have been pretty good. Andrew Cooper is off his power numbers from last year with Tampa Bay (26 HRs and 88 RBIs) but its early. The biggest surprize was Arthur Kline who had a great spring and has certainly exceeded any expectations, although early in 2023.

After a 16-5 April, the Reds were a 13-15 team in May and were lucky to have such a good start to the season as to be able to maintain their lead. Really concerned with the starting pitching. Will make some changes in the Pitching staff.

A very nice comeback season for David Batista so far, last season he was 12-13 with a 5.26 ERA in 31 starts. Lucas is pretty close to his 2022 numbers but Ricardo Diaz was 17-13 with a 3.98 ERA last year. Ryan was a good waiver pick up but Santiago has not been very good and needs to get some confidence back in AAA. Santiago refuses assignment to AAA so we will see what the trade block looks like. We signed Santiago to a 3 year $6.9 M deal (the 4th year a team option) this off season and so far it looks like it has backfired. We recieved no bites on Santiago. I was hoping to bring up Ashe.

Overall pleased with the outfield, now moves to make. A definite decline in Trayvon Robinson, his lowest batting average in any season was .274 in 2015 and is lowest HR total was his first full season in 2013 with 28, he is on pace for 36 and has had the only one season with less than 36 in 2013.

George Adams is having a good season in AA, he is at least 2 years away from being on the 40 man roster. Javier Martinez injured a hamstring at the end of April and will be out until early July, he has 2 option years left and I expect to see him spend the rest of the season in AAA and likely 2024 as well. Augusto Feliz is having a good season, at age 25 he needs to make his mark this season. He has 2 option years left and should get some MLB action this season, he has yet to have a MLB at bat but is a career .301 hitter in AAA over 148 games. Dan Swain will be added to the 40 man roster next season barring any OF emergency the Reds will have.
