No one has ever qualified, two champs have to both have 5 title defenses.

Jackson dominates Sullivan in rematch

March 22, 1908

Peter Jackson (27-5) scored a UD15 over #1 John L. Sullivan (25-7) to retain his LBF Heavyweight title.

Sullivan was never in this fight as he was battered and knocked down throughout the fight. Jackson caused Sullivan's left eye to swell in the first and Sullivan never got back on track.

Sullivan suffered a cut lip in the 3rd and a cut below his left eye in the 10th.

Jackson dropped Sullivan in the 9th, 11th, and 14th.

Both Darryl Woodford, ringside expert, and myself scored the bout 148-135. The official judges had it 147-135/146-135/147-134.

On the undercard

HW - Mike Schreck (18-12) KO4 Ben Taylor (8-6-1)
MW - Dan Creedon (19-10) TKO4 Paddy Purtell (9-10)
LH - Joe Butler (23-7-1) KO3 Patsy Cardiff (9-10)
MW - Walter Coffey (6-0) UD8 Sailor Burke (7-1) (both fighters pp for this club fight)
MW - Frank Glover (11-16) KO9 Johnny McGlade (10-18-3) (club fight)

Jackson handles Gans again in rematch

March 27, 1908

Young Peter Jackson (16-3) scored a KO10 over #1 Joe Gans (24-3-2) for his second victory over Gans and 5th defense of his LBC Welterweight title.

Jackson established control early knocking down Gans in the second round. Gans stayed to the outside and boxed well in the 3rd, 4th and 5th rounds.

Jackson got Gans to the ropes in the 6th and 7th. Both of Gans' eyes started swelling during these two rounds.

Finally in the 10th, Jackson caught up to Gans again and dropped him for good.

I had it even at 86. Ringside expert Walt Arnold had Jackson ahead 86-84.

On the undercard

HW - Sam Langford (16-5-1) TKO6 John Knifton (15-15)
HW - Hank Griffin (13-6-2) KO9 George Byers (9-4-1) (Byers stepped up to HW for this fight)
HW - William Schiller (12-3) KO3 Charlie Wilson (7-4-3)
FW - Frank Robson (6-0-1) UD8 Billy Ross (5-3) (both fighters fought at pp in this club fight)
LW - Young Otto (6-13-3) MD10 Barney Donovan (11-18-2) (club fight)

Bob McAllister

April 5th, 1908

Bob McAllister runs his record to 2-0 with a UD6 over a tomato can. Both victories so far have come by the way of UD.

According to the rules of the LBA he will not fight in May, as the LBA prohibits fighters from fighting in 3 consectutive months.

Bob still has a ways to go before he is out of beginners, I was just updating him because Chris was asking about him.

Herrera is eligible to defend his title this month but I haven't done the schedule for the main class of fighters yet, so I don't know wether or not he is fighting

Thanks Mike, was he one that you dialed the ratings down on (I had him at 9 OA)? Just curious as I watch what happens with him. I haven't used him beyond the test fights for rating purposes.

By the way how is Gibbons doing at MW? I think he may have come with the stock set but I have used him alot in testing other fighters while never actually using him in my universe.

Thanks for the update.

I still have McAllister at 9, but am curious if you made him as a LHW or what? I move several HW down to even out the numbers.

Mike Gibbons is 1-0 as a MW. He is rated 11.

I rated him at 9 as a LHW. Boxrec puts at MW (I think) but he ranged from MW to HW throughout his career as I recall. Gibbons did beat him, but he faired pretty well against the bigger (maybe slower) fighters.

It certainly doesn't bother me since I have a lack of quality at the LHW division. I've started doing the same at FLY, since I only have 3 legit FLY's so far, I've moved some BW's to even it out.

Johnson handles Schreck for 18th defense

April 2, 1908

Jack Johnson (30-1) knocked out #6 Mike Schreck (18-13) for his continued record setting defense streak. The streak now stands at 18.

Schreck managed to stay in this one through 8 rounds. He fought on the outside and picked his shots. A cut over his right eye seemed to bother him in the 9th. Then in the 10th he got cut under his left eye.

Johnson then caught Schreck with an uppercut in the 11th that dropped him and he never got up.

I had it fairly close at 96-94 at the time of the KO.

On the undercard

HW - Frank Childs (17-13-4) UD10 Tommy Dugan (10-2)
MW - Billy Papke (12-0) UD10 Billy McCarthy (19-9-3)
HW - Jim McCormick (7-0) KO2 Jem Stewart (4-19-2) (McCormick fought at pp in this club bout)
LW - Willie Ritchie (6-0) UD8 Jack Grace (5-3) ( both fighters at pp in this club fight)
FW - Marty McCue (7-12-1) KO1 Eddie Santry (12-21-1) (club fight)

Blink and it's over Britton loses title

April 6th, 1908

#3 Honey Mellody (13-12) scored a TKO2 over champ Jack Britton (13-3-1) to win the LBA Welterweight title and to avoid dropping to post-prime.

Britton came into the fight a 3-1 favorite and won the first round easily. A shot from Mellody early in the 2nd opened a gnarly cut over the right eye of Britton and the ref stopped the fight.

The commissioner refused to issue a mandatory rematch since he ruled it was a legitimate stoppage due to a cut.

On the undercard

WW - Kid Graves (11-0) UD10 George Lavigne (21-11-1) (Lavigne stepping up to WW for this loss)
HW - John Dwyer (20-7-1) UD10 Peter Courtney (8-2)
HW - Ed Martin (15-12) KO8 Marvin Hart (14-13-3)
LW - Time Callahan (6-1) SD8 Dave Barry (5-2) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
BW - Harry Forbes (11-13-6) UD10 Tommy Feltz (10-17-1)

Coulon captures Bantamweight title.

April 14th, 1908

In what seemed like destiny #2 Johnny Coulon (16-2) finally captured a share of the Bantamweight title in his 3rd try, with a UD15 over LBC champ Watty Austin (10-9-1).

Coulon's boxing skills dominated this fight from the opening bell. Austin had a brief moment in the middle rounds including cutting Coulon's right eye in the 9th, but in the end Coulon was just too elusive for Watty to win.

I had it 145-141. Jaret R. Morgan ringside had it 146-140. The official judges had it 145-141/145-142/146-140.

On the undercard

MW - Jack Moffat (10-6) UD10 Charley Johnson (7-6-2)
WW - Kyle Whitney (11-2-1) UD10 Dal Hawkins (9-9-1)
HW - Al Kubiak (7-0) SD8 Dan Hickey (7-27-1) (Kubiak fought at pp for this club fight)
FW - Jerry Bennett (7-0) UD8 Fred Johnson (5-1) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
LH - PJ Rentzler (10-15-3) UD10 Charlie O'Donnell (7-16-2) (club fight)

Ryan suffers first belimish, but not first loss

April 18, 1908

Tommy Ryan (31-0-1) fought to a DRAW15 with #3 Frank Craig (22-10-2) to retain his LBA middlewieght title.

Ryan did just enough to win this fight but the official judges felt otherwise. There were alot of close rounds, which in my opinion should of gone to Ryan.

Ryan dropped Craig in the 6th, but Craig beat the count then held on until the end of the round.

Despite my opinion about the close rounds I still had it a draw at 143-143. Tom Trunzo, ringside expert, had it 144-141 in favor of Craig.

The official judges had it 143-143/142-142/143-141 (Craig). In the post-fight interviews both fighters claimed victory and Craig insisted on a mandatory rematch. The LBA felt no need to declare on stating that 1) Ryan had already beaten Craig before this fight and 2) the Champion knocked down Craig and Craig should feel lucky with the draw. If Craig keeps winning the two will meet again.

On the undercard

MW - Terry Martin (10-0) TKO6 Hugo Kelly (12-12-1) (Martin stepping up in weight for the win)
LW - Arthur Chambers (9-1) KO5 George McFadden (9-6-1)
BW - Kid Murphy (12-0) KO2 Joe Wagner (10-9)
LW - George Washington (6-0-1) UD8 Charles McCarthy (5-21-1) (Washington fought at pp for this club fight)
HW - Herbert Slade (12-15-2) KO8 Mike Sheehan (6-21-1) (club fight)
