1924 This spring, the AL does not appear to have a clear-cut leader. The Yankees had an incredible season in 1923, winning 103 games, but many of their veterans are showing the signs of age. Detroit and Philadelphia are once again the Yankees' main rivals, along with Washington. Boston and Chicago could be better than they were last season, but Cleveland seems to have hit the skids. The Indians had the worst record in baseball last season and nearly all of the veterans who remember the team's glory days have retired. Like the Yankees and Indians, the top two NL teams from last season have major questions entering the season because of aging stars. The Giants should still contend for the pennant, but they cannot be easily tagged as favorites. The defending World Champion Cardinals are in even worse shape, and they may have to fight all season just to stay close to the league leaders. After several disappointing seasons, the Phillies have undoubtedly the most talented team in the NL. The question is whether or not they can finally put together a pennant-winning season. A lot rests on the performance of young players. The Pirates also have assembled a talented club and should compete. The lower tier of potential league leaders are Brooklyn and Cincinnati. The Reds have the better team and could be near the top of the league, while the Robins have several offensive holes to fill. The Cubs' pitching staff is in such terrible shape that the team is already out of serious pennant contention. Meanwhile, the Braves are once again on the path to rebuilding. Several key players are in place, and perhaps they can use some of their glut of outfield talent to land a strong veteran pitcher. Cardinal outfielder Jeff Carvey was caught in a potential scam in which he offered Giants shortstop Whitey Kohse $500 if he would not "bear down too hard" during last season's pennant race. After being caught, Carvey implicated a St. Louis coach and three star Cardinal players. The players were exonerated, but Carvey and the coach were banished. Carvey was a promising young player who would likely have been the Cardinals' Opening Day leftfielder. *Carvey would later gain the distinction of being the last major leaguer to be found guilty of suspected crookedness while Commissioner Landis was in office. Key Retirees: Tee Carver, RF, Cleveland Blues/Indians 1902-1923 Carver was one of the most productive offensive members of a Cleveland franchise that dominated much of the AL from 1907-1921. He was the 1914 BOTY and won the World Series with Cleveland in 1915 and 1916. He won two Gold Gloves and retired as the all-time leader in RBI. Over his career, he had a .314 average (21st All-Time), 2908 hits (4th All-Time), 529 doubles (2nd All-Time), 61 home runs (23rd All-Time), 1399 RBI (Most All-Time), 1319 runs scored (7th All-Time) and 1158 walks (2nd All-Time). Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati Reds 1904-1923 The German was a fixture in Cincinnati as the Reds put together an impressive string of 11-straight winning seasons. In his 20 seasons, the Reds had only 4 losing records. They struggled in winning only one pennant and were defeated in that World Series, but nevertheless, Cincinnati has been one of the most successful franchises in baseball history. Kahle is the 2nd noteable ancestor to retire and he had a .285 average, 2273 hits, 81 home runs (12th All-Time) and 1049 RBI (13th All-Time). Will Stafford, SP, New York Giants 1906-1923 Stafford was one of the best pitchers on a Giants franchise that struggled in his early years but blossomed into a perennial contender just before he retired. He was part of the 1921 World Series winners. He was a workhorse who racked up 246 wins (14th Most All-Time), 2251 K's (4th All-Time) and 440 complete games (3rd All-Time). He had a 3.59 career ERA and 38 shutouts (21st All-Time), but he also had 259 losses. Ancestors Added: Otto "Kaiser" Kahle, SP, Cleveland Indians Kahle, the son of recently retired Heinrich Kahle and brother of Yankee third baseman Gus Kahle, joins a Cleveland franchise deep in a rebuilding stage. Most of their former stars are gone, and those that are left are not far from retiring. Otto is easily the top young player in their system, and knowing how far off this franchise is from being competitive again, the Indians will start the young star off slowly in AA. He has a huge future ahead of him, and he can only hope that the organization can bring in several other key young players to play around him. Last edited by Matt from TN; 02-08-2005 at 11:17 AM. |

It's a shame the Cubs can't put together some decent pitching. Levi is certainly doing his best, but they need more than the one guy. I'm praying for a miracle to bring on a "worst to first" turnaround [but not holding my breath!]

for those who want to know, the pitcher who was banned after the 1922 season was Phil Douglas... this outfielder who was banned after the 1923 season was Jimmy O'Connell...
was that who you were referring to? |

Shufflin' Phil Douglas...yes that was it
Actually I confused Cozy Dolan and Joe Gedeon...Joe was with the Black Sox scandal and accused. I think Dolan was the last guy banned from baseball Also, Dutch Leonard is popping in my head for accusing Cobb and Speaker, but I think he just got released and never banned

Detroit picked up where they left off last season - hot. They lead the AL after one month. Four other teams are within striking distance - defending AL champion New York, surprising Boston, St. Louis and Washington. The talented A's also picked up where they left off last season - struggling. Brooklyn surprisingly jumped out to a quick lead in the NL. The defending World Champion Cardinals are just one game out. Pittsburgh is 3.5 games back, but all other teams are below .500. Batters of the Month: AL - Marcus Sergeant, SS, Detroit Tigers - He hit .439 with 12 RBI and 24 runs scored. NL - Jesse Passwater, 1B, Brooklyn Robins - He hit .393 with 27 RBI, 17 runs scored and 3 home runs. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, Philadelphia Athletics - He was 5-1 with a 1.70 ERA and 1 shutout. I don't know if you guys have checked out the ratings of the A's starters, but their pitchers are talented... I've been watching them for several seasons now & thinking they've underperformed... I am always expecting them to break out...
As for Rossi, I just noticed he got a HUGE talent increase... He got a bump in AVG, HR, K's and BB... He's Brilliant in AVG, HR and BB now and Good in K's... He's become (talent-wise) the most overall talented ancestor hitter yet... He's equal in talent to the great Woody Woodson... Now we just have to wait and see how he develops... With Rossi, "Rabbi" Baum, "Bull" Zegri, "Old King" Cole and "Slap" Herzog, the A's have and incredibly talented & young offense... |

June 1, 1924 Oh, how the mighty have fallen! New York fans are beside themselves as both the mighty Yankees and Giants have begun the season flat. The Giants then lost slugging first baseman Jared Jarry, who was leading the majors with 9 home runs, to a torn thigh muscle which should sideline him until the beginning of August. Detroit cooled down at 15-13 this month, allowing the surging Senators to tie for first. Washington went 18-9 in May behind an offense that sports six regulars hitting over .300. The Browns maintained their position at 3.5 games off the lead, and while the Yankees slipped below .500, the White Sox went 17-10 in May and moved into 4th. Chicago's pitching staff has come alive to carry the team. Andrew Murphy (8-3, 2.01 ERA) is steady as always, but the surprise has been Ian Casale (6-2, 1.95). Casale leads the AL in ERA. He was once a highly touted prospect, but he had never developed up to expectations. Now at the age of 27, he seems to be coming of age. The Cardinals dominated the NL in May, going 21-6 and jumping into 1st place. Brooklyn was a respectable 15-11, but they now find themselves 4.5 games behind St. Louis. Philadelphia was equally impressive in May, going 21-8 and moving into 3rd. Pittsburgh and Boston have been solid, but the Pirates lost their ace Mike Heinze until mid-July with a strained elbow ligament. Batters of the Month: AL - Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Philadelphia Athletics - He hit .418 with 19 RBI, 17 runs scored and 3 home runs. NL - John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .380 with 25 RBI, 19 runs scored and 4 home runs. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-0 with a 1.18 ERA and 1 shutout. NL - Fists Ubert, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 1 shutout. Code:
American League Standings Washington 31 20 .608 - Detroit 32 21 .604 - St. Louis (A) 28 24 .538 3.5 Chicago (A) 27 25 .519 4.5 Boston (A) 26 27 .491 6.0 New York (A) 26 27 .491 6.0 Cleveland 22 29 .431 9.0 Philadelphia (A) 16 35 .314 15.0 National League Standings St. Louis (N) 36 15 .706 - Brooklyn 32 20 .615 4.5 Philadelphia (N) 32 22 .593 5.5 Pittsburgh 27 25 .519 9.5 Boston (N) 23 28 .451 13.0 Chicago (N) 22 30 .423 14.5 Cincinnati 20 33 .377 17.0 New York (N) 17 36 .321 20.0 Ancestors: Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .275 with 16 RBI, 12 runs scored and 4 home runs. He is currently suffering from a pulled rib cage muscle. Dummy Netsky, SP, Boston (N) - Dummy was the Braves' 4th starter in April, but he has been moved back to the pen for now. He is 3-1 with a 5.01 ERA on the season. Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .383 with 18 RBI, 16 runs scored and 3 home runs. Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Fists was the NL POTM (See above). He still leads the NL in ERA. John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops was the NL BOTM (See above). Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .353 with 15 RBI and 19 runs scored. Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .327 with 8 RBI, 21 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. "Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 6-0 with a 2.14 ERA and 3 shutouts in 7 starts! He leads the majors with 11 wins. Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will hit .371 with 12 RBI, 24 runs scored and 8 stolen bases. Thomas Strasser, CF, Cleveland - Thomas hit .247 with 12 RBI, 16 runs scored and 2 home runs. He is currently nursing a stiff neck. Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge hit .224 with 9 RBI and 15 runs scored. He has not gotten on track yet this season, but luckily the rest of the Cards are hitting on all cylinders. Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 2-4 with a 2.63 ERA in 7 starts. Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .320 with 7 RBI and 15 runs scored. Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Philadelphia (A) - Ben was named the AL BOTM (see above). Bourbon Allen, SP, Boston (N) - Allen went 0-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 6 starts. Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Boston (N) - Junior went 3-3 with a 5.36 ERA and 2 shutouts in 7 starts. He has been inconsistent this season, as is shown by his 3-3 record this month and the fact that his ERA was a bloated 5.36 despite throwing 2 shutouts. He has allowed 3 or fewer earned runs in 8 of his 13 starts this season, but he has allowed 5 or more in 4 other starts (including 11 runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Phillies this month). Sam Kass, CF, Pittsburgh - Sam hit .381 with 14 RBI, 22 runs scored and 3 home runs. August "Fat Gus" Kahle, 3B, New York (A) - Gus hit .277 with 11 RBI, 16 runs scored and 2 home runs. Salvatore "The Sicilian Saucer" Rossi, 1B, Philadelphia (A) - Rossi hit .233 with 10 RBI, 8 runs scored and 2 home runs. Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Chicago (N) - Levi hit .410 with 13 RBI, 22 runs scored and 7 stolen bases. Kid Fite, 2B, Detroit - Kid hit .255 with 12 RBI and 15 runs scored. Harry Finley, C, New York (A) - Harry is now hitting .448 (13 for 29) in 12 games this season. David "Pops" McAuliffe, 3B, Chicago (N) - Pops hit .286 with 14 RBI and 10 runs scored. I saw that too with Sal's talent bumps, but his ratings are steadfast...so we shall see....
It HAS to defense, because The Prof has a 43% GB ratio and he is the only successful pitcher SS DeZeeuw and 2B Hertzog are AWFUL...this certainly isn't the Million dollar IF of Collins and Barry Chestnutt with his 68% GB ratio has been the most underperforming and I think that Middle IF is to blame. I just can't see any other way that Rabbi, Sal and the Prof could be in last place :shakes head: One thing is for certain with the #1 payroll in the league...Whiskey Allen Sr. is looking like a great managerial canidate if Gunther Williams can't make a late season push What are the park settings for Shibe Park?? That could kill the pitching staff...which would make Nagel an even better pitcher than he seems...go Prof!

I would've loved to keep the exact seating capacities, but since I am turning this into an online league, I decided from the get-go to leave all stadiums as 45,000...

The American League is currently enjoying one of its best pennant races in history. Currently six teams are at or above .500. Basically every team except the A's and Indians are in the race. Detroit started the month well, but finished just 14-12 but managed to take over 1st place. That was due to Washington's 14-13 performance. The Senators started the month terribly, but ended on a good note and are now just a half game back. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they lost their top offensive performer, 1922 BOTY "Spice" Hagaman, to a season-ending hamstring injury. The Browns went 15-11 and were in 2nd place for a time. The Red Sox and White Sox continue to surprise the league, while the struggling Yankees are at .500 but just 6.5 games back with half a season remaining. The Cardinals went 16-12 this month, but they lost ground to the resurgent Robins, who went 18-10 in June. The Phillies struggled though a 9-game losing streak late in the month and find themselves 9.5 games back in 3rd. Batters of the Month: AL - "Barefoot" Atkins, CF, New York Yankees - He hit .410 with 29 RBI, 20 runs scored and 2 home runs.
