The St. Louis Cardinals have placed outfielder Luis Guanipa on the 10-day injured list after he suffered broken thumb while running the bases during a 5-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies on May 3.
Guanipa, 30, is expected to miss up to four weeks.
The start of the season has been a struggle for Guanipa, who in 26 games has hit just .174 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
His spot on the roster will be filled by left-handed reliever Chris May.
May, 26, opened the season on the major leagues but was sent down when the roster was reduced from 27 to 26 players.
In five games in April, May was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.
