I have no idea if George had his handlebar mustache when he played as a younger man but that's the pic we got - so let's go with it. He pitched 4 games for the 1891 Louisville Colonels of the American Association. His Wikipedia page notes that in 1910, he died from an accidental overdose of medication taken to relieve insomnia. Here's my go at getting the AI to turn him around and my cleaning up of that resulting image.

Thanks he looks great! The most annoying part of doing those FG for the pack is the fact the hardest one to do are guys who had no career but since the plan is to have a FG of all the guys who played in the major (good luck for the guys who will decide to do the same for the players who only played in the minor leagues) in the pack we must try.

Some guys in the 19th century gave me so much trouble with their over the top facial hair. Make a FG, mirroring the best side to have a complete mustache, using an AI to make a photography with the FG head and go from another modeller process to get a result acceptable... and all that for maybe 10 players

It's a good bet that he did since facial hair were a common thing for that century...

Lans I have another one I was unable to do for you... Al Porto, another no career guy who played three games for the Phillies in 1948. If a front facing image of him exist I was unable to find it, but if you can find one and you're busy just post it here and I'll do the work.

Here's a more front-facing option for Porto. The newspapers predominantly called him "Lefty" Porto.

Since I asked help to do his FG that makes sense to post him here... Al Porto with his brand new visage

Of course he never played in my league and was deleted, the game AI really hate relievers who played very few games, so I had to import him to put him in a Phillies uniform.

Jerold Mark Johnston 1978

(Hey! Only 4 months, this time. For me, that's almost decent.)

The Yankees' 3rd round pick in 1978, Johnston was signed out of South Alabama (where he ended up after a scout for Eddie Stanky came to check out a teammate in his Michigan hometown), having battled Bob Horner for the NCAA HR title, albeit by dint of a tiny park.

The game calls him Jerold, but he was known professionally as "Mark" (and once he moved into coaching, "Skip"). He had a so-so rookie campaign, but then put up a .869 at AA West Haven in 1979, which is rather good if you're primarily a 2B. He started well at AA Nashville in 1980 (after the franchise shift) but then…something happened, and he spent the bulk of the season playing for the independent Alexandria Dukes of Carolina league, out of the Yankees system and a level down from his established skills.

Whatever happened must have shaken Skip, because after struggling at Alexandria, he gave organized baseball the skip for all of 1981, only resurfacing as an El Paso Diablo in the Brewers organization in 1982. He struggled there, as well (and if you can't hit at El Paso, you can't hit anywhere) and while he did creditable work at lower leagues (Beloit, Stockton) for the Brewers in 1983, 1984 saw him back in Yankees gear, batting an acceptable .793 OPS for Ft. Lauderdale in the FSL before getting a "Did you know you're 27?" speech and a ticket onward. He also played some ball in the Dominican and Australia, but I don't know when.

Johnston moved into coaching, becoming the hitting instructor for Iowa Cubs in the mid-1990s. So we probably can blame him for the immortal Tuffy Rhodes hitting those 3 HR off of Doc Gooden on Dwight's last Opening Day for the Mets. Thanks a lot, Skip!

He passed away in 2021. Included are various pictures, one of them from later life.

In my game, he's been swapped to the White Sox as partial payment for Lerrin LaGrow and while he didn't do much in the minors, he was summoned for a September cameo. And hey, the Pale Hose won the two games he played in (including a 14-4 drubbing of the Invinci-Angels), so maybe there is some magic there, anyhow.

Thanks for all you've done.

Steve Green 1978

The Angels have had the AL West clinched forever (with two games left in my 1979 season, the Brewers lead the Yankees by 1 game in the AL East, the Pirates lead Philadelphia by 2, and Cincinnati and the Dodgers are tied, but California clinched before mid-September), but that doesn't mean their competitors aren't still trying everything from A to Z.

The Twins have literally gone to Z, since they have called up Steven Z. Green. (There have been a number of "Steve Green" players, even though the only one to hit the majors played only one game in 2001.) Steve Z. was the Twins' 5th round pick out of Modesto (CA) JC, and IRL came out on fire, going 8-3 at rookie ball Elizabethtown in 1978 and 16-6 for Visalia in his home state California League in 1979. That got him to AA Orlando, where he had a so-so 1980 and a worse 1981 and the Twins decided that a K/9 rate that had peaked at 4.2 and shrunk to 2.1 was not exactly the pattern they were looking for, and they cut him loose.

(In the game, the Twins AI pushed him to AAA Toledo and while he didn't shine as a a Mud Hen, it was close enough for a September cameo.)

(There is also a card of Green as the pitching coach for the 1999 Sioux Falls Canaries, but I doubt that will be much help.)

Here's my go at Steve Green... he is in a Washington uniform because the Twins doesn't exist yet in my simulation.

PS: I tried Mark Johnson but I wasn't happy with my results, so I forget about him because the FG would have been a waste of your time (Lans will certainly give him a go for you)

Since the next pack update is coming relatively soon it's time to share my updates... contrary to usual they aren't from a specific decade but 77 random FGs from 1871 to 1960 I have redone or created.

As usual two links... the big file with everything or the smaller one with just the new FGs.

PS: This is just my works for the pack, no FG included in the pack made by Lans are in those files.

Ronald MacDonald 1977

(Thanks for Johnston and Green, guys.)

Okay, so the game calls him "Ron", but I have to go with the name on most of his cards, if only for the image.

Drafted in the 17th round out of the University of Kansas by the Mets in 1977, the Kenosha WI native struggled in his rookie half-season at Little Falls (NY-P league), but posted a strong .846 OPS at Class-A Lynchburg in 1978 and followed that with a .810 at AA Jackson in 1979.

This earned Ron three tries at AAA Tidewater, and while he eventually pushed to a .749 in 1982, by this time he was behind a bunch of other middle infielders and got the boot.

No word on if he got fries with that, though.

I looked him up and apparently he really did go by Ronald instead of Ron and people often asked him why he wouldn't just go by Ron to avoid the comparison.

Thanks for the facegen AND the research, justtxyank! I guess I'll have to change the name to "Ronald" in the game (and perhaps Lans can do it in the database).

After all, we wouldn't want to clown him, right?

I was just going to get to this one tonight. Recovering from pneumonia and been offline for a bit. Finally starting to feel like myself again. Pack will go up on Thanksgiving weekend, so you have a bit of time.

Feel better Lans.

I had Pneumonia last September. Totally healthy previous to it. Took a full year to recover.

Sorry to hear it Lans. Pneumonia is a butt kicker. Hope you're back to 100 soon.

I've done a handful of career minor leaguers from the 70s and 80s as well and have also touched up so lesser known guys that played in the 80s that had...off...facegens.

When you're feeling better do you think you could take a stab at a new Sammy Sosa? Similar to Frank Thomas, the facegen itself is fine quality but it doesn't look like him. It's an odd head shape. I've had any luck with the sources. He indeed has a weird head to convert.

I still like the one I originally did, though I could redo it without the shine on his nose. What does it look like on your computer?
