Man, if this team could score even a little bit for Jimmy and somebody gave Ron Hutchins a couple on the nose, we could fantasize about a triple crown going to Jaytown ...

Or if Jimmy was traded to ....... any other team. Which I hope does not have to be the actual solution.

Today is Jim Baucom's 22nd birthday!

P Jim Lombardi (29-R) was sent back to Daytona (A) and P Mike Marsh (22-R) was called up. He will make his MLB debut today.

Jacksonville Jays (31-40 .437 12 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Syracuse Sycamores (44-26 .629 1 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Mike Marsh (22-R) (3-7 3.29 ERA 52 IP, 47 H, 2 HR, 28 BB, 43 SO in A Ball) Rookie vs.
SYR: Ron Wisham (33-L) (7-4 3.40 ERA 104.2 IP, 90 H, 7 HR, 25 BB, 63 SO) Ace/Hurler/All-Star(01)

Marsh is making his MLB debut today. He was our 2nd round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft and was the #8 prospect this Spring. His control has been iffy (4.8 BB/9) for Daytona (A), but other than that, he has pitched well. He is almost guaranteed to get a loss today, though...

Wisham won both the Ace Award and the Hurler Trophy last year, but did not make the All-Star team. He was 23-7 with a 2.24 ERA in 265 IP. He is 1-0 in 2 starts against us in his career with an 0.87 ERA. 10.1 IP, 7 H, 0 HR, 1 BB, 12 SO.

JACKSONVILLE

They lead the League in HR allowed (69) and we have allowed the 2nd most (65). Their run differential is +43 and ours is -55.

P Paul Gaughan swings the the first pitch and grounds one to 3rd, but Ed Diskin makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error and the bases are loaded with 2 outs and the .388 hitter up.... Stan Stephens grounds out to 2nd!!

Top of the Third:
Cal Doty grounds one to 1st, but Jim Montgomery boots it for his 13th error of the season! How can the scouts rate him an 'A' on defense? Doty steals 2nd! And then steals 3rd on the next pitch! Won - 7 to 2

We are 13-7 (.650) in our last 20 games!

We had 11 hits and made 1 error
Birmingham had 8 hits and made 3 errors

We have now finished our 15th month in the MLB.
In only 5 of those months have opposing pitchers hit under .200.
We set a team record by a mile by holding them to an .083 BA (5 for 60) this month! The previous low in hits was 9 (.141) in September of last year.
It is also the first month, ever, that we did not give up an XBH to a pitcher!
In 2001, they hit .232 on the season with 23 XBH.
In 2002, they hit .210 with 15 XBH.
This year, they are hitting .172 with only 4 XBH! Still a little high for pitchers, but I'll take it!
We will probably get killed by them in July.....

Del Warwick (W 6-7) went 8 innings, allowed 1 run, 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
RHP Roger Wallace went 1 inning, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run and struck out 1.

Paul Gaughan (L 7-4) went 5.2 innings, gave us 6 runs (4 earned), 9 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 5. He threw a WP.

2B Leander Gooding, close to being sent to Daytona (A), had 3 hits, stole a base and scored a run. LF Cal Doty had no hits or walks, but stole 2 base, scored a run and had an RBI and threw a runner out at home. CF/RF Ray McDonald hit a double and had an RBI. 1B Jack Washburn hit a triple and scored a run. SS Bart Daw had 2 hits with his 4th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. C Bert Swope, also close to getting a train ticket, hit a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. PH/C Don Kern had a hit. PR Danny Stewart scored a run.

For Birmingham, 2B Rick Halverson had 3 hits, but no runs or RBI.

Trudy's report on Charlie Faber is a mild calf strain that she thinks will bother him for 2 or 3 days.

We are in Richmond to play a short 2 game set against the defending MLB champions. The Robins just won a pair of games in New Orleans. We are 2-2 against them on the season and this is our first visit to Virginia this year. They are 12th in scoring with 3.75 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.70). The Robins are last in the League in HR (21) and we are 12th (46). They lead the League in BA (.266) and we are 13th (.243). They are 1st in fewest runs allowed with 2.68 per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 4.25). They have allowed the fewest HR (35) and we have allowed the 2nd most (67). Their run differential is +81, the best in the MLB, and ours is -42, up to 4th worst!

Jacksonville Jays (35-41 .461 11 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at
Richmond Robins (46-30 .605 1.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Mike Marsh (22-R) (1-0 3.86 ERA 7 IP, 6 H, 2 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO) Rookie vs.
RICH: Billy Warner (24-R) (8-4 2.63 ERA 119.2 IP, 89 H, 8 HR, 39 BB, 86 SO)

This will be Marsh's 2nd career start. He beat the 2001 MLB champs in his debut; can he beat the 2002 champs in his 2nd start?

Warner is their #1 starter, acquired in a trade over the Winter from Birmingham for an outfielder that cannot play defense. He is 1-1 against us in 2 starts this year with a 3 hit shutout. 1.80 ERA, 15 IP, 6 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 10 SO.

Independence Day!

We are back home to play Orlando a 3 game series. They just split a pair of games at home with Charlotte. We split 4 games with them in their first visit to us, May 1-4. The Juice are 3rd in scoring with 4.25 runs per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.67). They are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.48 per game (Jacksonville is #12 with 4.29). Their run differential is -18 and ours is -49.

Orlando Juice (36-43 .456 12.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (35-43 .449 13 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

ORL: Manny Martinez (31-R) (6-5 2.77 ERA 84.1 IP, 80 H, 5 HR, 19 BB, 72 SO) vs.
JAX: Jim Baucom (22-L) (6-4 2.45 ERA 121.1 IP, 105 H, 5 HR, 22 BB, 102 SO) All-Star

Martinez is their #1 starter. We faced the ex-Jay once this year and did not score a run, but he only went 1.1 innings before having to leave with an injury.

Baucom gave up 5 runs on 9 hits, 1 home run and no walks with 5 strikeouts in 6 innings last time out, but he got a win, anyway.

Bottom of the First:
Cal Doty grounds out to 3rd. Don Kern grounds out to short. Dennis Brown swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted...

Bottom of the Third:
With 2 outs, Don Kern doubles to right! P Manny Martinez is hurt... New Pitcher: Daniel Escarcega (32-R), who is 1-4 with 2 SV and a 7.28 ERA in 38.1 IP with 56 H and 11 HR and 30 BB. He had a 3.38 ERA in 64 IP last year. One of his losses this year is against us. Dennis Brown grounds out to 1st, unassisted....

Our joy at getting to face P Escarcega is short-lived, as he also gets hurt after only facing 3 batters....

Jim Baucom (W 7-4) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 12. He threw a WP. 128 pitches. His 1st shutout of the season and 5th of his career! It is only the 3rd time a Jay hurler has reached double figures in K's and the 2nd time by Baucom! The other time was by his opponent today, Manny Martinez. He comes up 1 shy of his own team record. With this win, he also raises his lifetime record to .500 (18-18)!

Manny Martinez (L 6-6) went 2.2 innings, gave us 1 run, 3 hits, no walks and struck out no one.

C Don Kern hit a double and his 4th home run of the season and had 3 RBI. RF Ray McDonald hit a double in his only at bat.

The Juice announce that P Manny Martinez had elbow inflammation and they expected him to be out about 2 weeks and would put him on the DL. RP Danny Escarcega also had elbow inflammation, but they expected him to miss the rest of the season. That is what you call a mercy killing....
