Bubba's kid is about 11 or so...

Given the last name of Jones, I suspect it wouldn't be difficult to wait 7 years, and look for the first decent prospect with that last name.

As far as his selection into the HOF, perhaps we should do what others have done.

Let's have a vote!

What do you think, folks? Bubba was a HUGE overachiever, but does he rate?

Here is some additional info:

All time:

Complete games, 5th
Strikeouts: 6th
Wins: 12th
Shutouts: 8th
ERA: Not so good, maybe top 20%.
Innings pitched: 3rd all time...kind of surprising.

His 223 wins is basically a function of playing for some pretty darn good teams. His lifetime winning percentage was probably a little less than his teams.

Bubba never was better than a #2 starter, usually a #3.

I suppose the most comparable pitchers are Luis Tiant and Catfish Hunter, not bad comparisons...an innings guy who threw hard.

Yeah, the ERA is too high, and his lifetime WHIP was north of 1.40

Bubba's had average (low) control for walks...and even led the league in walks twice.

i have read this for awhile and i must say, by far the most entertaining story I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I'm still in highschool so it is rare that i actually read in the summer, but this was the exception. Excellent story, idea, and writing.

The family of local hero Col. Robert Jones is sad to report to this reporter that Bubba has been seriously hurt in action over Germany on 12 January of this year.

The Jones' received a telegram from the War Department yesterday morning. I spoke with Jessie Burdock, who works down at the Western Union office as a runner.

"When we get messages from the War Department, it usually is bad news. When we saw the recipient, we knewed is was about Bubba....I mean Colonel Jones. Dad tole me to get on the bike, and head over to the Jones place right quick, before word got around in town."

I spoke with Ella Jones, and she indicated to me that her husbands wounds were not life-threatening, and that he would be shipped back to the US soon.

Ella Mae,

I am writing to let you know that I am fine.

My left arm is a little tore up, and I have a big 'ole hole in my leg, but otherwise, I am ok.

We were over CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED and we were jumped by CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED. Jimmy Koch, my co-pilot had to land the plane, as I was pretty doped up from the morphine the navigator made me take.

Cubby Bear was some tore up....one elevator was gone, CENSORED CENSORED CENSORED is a tough old bird.

Tell mom and daddy that they are sending me home. There is some talk about me making the rounds selling war bonds. I guess having a shot up pilot old baseball player about covers all the bases. Heh. A little joke there.

I don't know what I will do....it is not likely that I can stay in the Air Corp after this. I don't mind saying that flying a desk isn't what I want to do from here on in.

I do miss you and the kids. Give them a hug and a kiss from me, and tell them their dad is coming home. So many people won't be so blessed.

I spent most of last night and most of my day at work today reading the Bubba saga. I must say it is the best story I have ever read.. When I was in school and had to write a short story I would always try to write something like that, but mine were pure crap compared to this amazing novel. If you ever write a novel about any sport let me know man, I will be buying it the next day!!! Thanks for the great story!

Heh heh, thank you all very, very much.

At work, getting me to talk isn't much of a problem, its getting me to shut up!

I stole this idea from THE greatest baseball writer of all time, Ring Lardner. His story "Alibi Ike" is the template I used. Ike was a country bumpkin....like Bubba, with a big heart.

I am writing a similar type of thread on the .400 Software studios forum, using the medium of Tournament Dreams College Basketball. The coach for that team is Robert J. Jones, III. Yep, Bubba's grandson, fast-forwarded to 2002.

I appreciate being able to drum up some readership here, on this forum. Is that OK?

Bubba the third is a little more sophisticated, as is fitting for the times. My best friend, for many years, was born and raised in Hogs Wallow, Arkansas, and he claims to not have had shoes or electricity until he was 12 or so. Arkansas is different now... and I twinge at the stereotypes I promulgated in this story.

....and when (IF!) Title Bout gets published, I absolutely will start a story about a fight Manager, starting from his garage gym, and going from there. THAT should be a lot of fun! Think of the mayhem and trouble these fighters can get into!

This story was absolutely incredible. I felt like crying when Bubba retired. I would seriously think about translating this into a short story or novel. At the very least, the OOTP guys should hire you as a spokesperson. LOL! Thank you for taking the time to share Bubba and his story with all of us.

Robert J. (Bubba) Jones, late of the US Army Air Corps, and the Chicago Cubs, agreed late yesterday afternoon to become the Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball club!

Bubba has been out of baseball for the last 5 years, and only agreed to the new position after much persuasion by the baseball Cardinals.

Owner Ted Drewry had this to say about our new Manager. "Robert is a class act, and has been for a long, long time. The Cardinals are thrilled to have someone who has the total respect of the baseball community as their new manager.
Even though Robert does not have managerial experience at the major league level, we feel that his experience and knowledge will stand us...and him, in good stead for the future of our club."

After Mr. Drewry completed his remarks, Bubba came to the microphone, and had this to say...."Thank you Mr. Drewry, and my thanks to the rest of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization. I accept the position as manager, and I am looking forward to working with the members of this fine, fine baseball club. There are many challenges to overcome, many ways we can improve. I cannot stand here and promise Cardinal Nation a World Series, but I CAN promise that the level of effort will be there."

Bubba was flanked by his children, 14 year old Fredric, and 11 year old Clarissa.
