Philippines - Welterweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Irineo Flores vs Leo Agbulos - Flores survived a knockdown in the 1st round to score one of his own in the 11th round of a solid 9-6 11-4 11-4 decision. Rev Santillan vs Francisco Ferrer - After 2 slow rounds Santillan took over, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 8th round to score then continued punishing Ferrer until the referee ended the fight for the TKO. Ernie Alesna vs Rocky Kalingo - Alesna dominated the 1st orund and Kalingo dominated the 2nd round when the referee suddenly and (in my eyes) prematurely ended the fight for the Kalingo TKO. Macario Flores vs Flashy Sebastian - A back and forth fight that saw Flores score the lone knockdown in the 13th round, then dominate the rest of the way to win 8-6 on both my and Tom Trunzo's cards. The judges scored it 9-4 Flores, 9-5 Sebastian and 7-7 even for the draw. Rematch coming up. Rematch: Macario Flores vs Flashy Sebastian - Flores was robbed of the decision in the previous fight, and in what started out as a close one again ended up losing due to a bad cut over his right eye in the 9th round. |

Philippines - Welterweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Irineo Flores vs Rocky Kalingo - Flores came out strong, scoring a knockdown in the 2nd round then finishing Kalingo with a series of punches that had him out on his feet when the referee stepped in to end it for the TKO. Rev Santillan vs Flashy Sebastian - Santillan battered a tougher than expected Sebastian, who countered very effectively but was taking major damage causing swelling, then a cut in the 14th that ended it for the Santillan TKO. Final: Irineo Flores vs Rev Santillan - Flores dominated the first 6 rounds, moving nicely and countering well. In the 7th he was tagged with a wicked right hand that floored him for an 8 count and he never recovered, being pounded in the 8th round until the referee saved him from serious harm for the 8th round TKO. Santillan moves to the World Tournament with a 3-0-0 (3) record. |

Philippines - Jr. Welterweights - Round 1
With an even dozen fighters in this division, the top 4 seeds will recieve a bye. They are Morris East, Moises Cantoja, Roberto Cruz & Baby Lorona.
Round 1: Pedro Adigue Jr. vs Rolando Aldemir - Adigue Jr. moved well and used his jab to good effect throughout, keeping Aldemir off balance. Both Jim Trunzo and I saw it 10-4 Adigue Jr. while the judges scored it 10-4, 10-4, 9-5 for Adigue Jr. Allan Alegria vs Dindo Canoy - An all out brawl that saw the prohibitive underdog Canoy have some great moments, but Alegria put him away half way through the 15th with a perfect lef right combination for the final round KO. Jong Jong Pacquing vs Al Coquilla - Both men started out trading punches from the opening bell, but it was a wild right from Pacquing that floored Coquilla with 51 seconds left in the 1st round for the KO. Rocky Alarde vs Max Boy Toyogon - Alarde started strong, but it was a wicked right that literally tore a gash over the left tye of Toyogon in the 2nd that was the deciding factor of this 2nd round TKO. |

Philippines - Jr. Welterweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Morris East vs Rocky Alarde - East dominated, scoring 3 knockdowns enroute to a 14-1, 12-3, 13-2 decision. Moises Cantoja vs Pedro Adigue Jr. - Adigue Jr. used the entire ring and amazing hand speed to keep Cantoja off balance, nearly closing his right eye while bloodying his right cheek and mouth in this one. He earned a hard fought 12-3, 10-4 12-3 decision against the favored Cantoja. Roberto Cruz vs Allan Alegria - Solid performance by Cruz as he used a vicious downstairs-upstairs attack to wear Alegria down the scored the KO early in the 10th round. Baby Lorona vs Jong Jong Pacquing - Lorona was down in the 8th, Pacquing in the 9th, then Lorona went down again in the 15th. Pacquing took over in the 10th however, dominating at times to earn the 10-4, 10-4 9-4 decision. |

Philippines - Jr. Welterweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Morris East vs Pedro Adigue Jr. - A fun brawl to watch as both men went toe to toe throughout until East landed a wicked right hand that put Adigue Jr. out for the night at the end of the 6th round. Roberto Cruz vs Jong Jong Pacquing - This started out as a back and forth brawl when Cruz scored a knockdown in the 6th round. That seemed to motivate Pacquing however as he took control of the fight from that point on to win going away by the score of 10-4, 9-4 and 9-5. Final: Morris East vs Jong Jong Pacquing - Pacquing defeated 2 of the top 4 seeds to get to the finals, and through the first 8 rounds it looked like he might pull off another upset, but 4 knockdowns later, he was out for the count in the 12th round. East had nothing but praise for the courage of his countryman in this one as he moves on to the World Tournament with a 3-0-0 (2) record. |

Philippines - Lightweights - Round 1
There are 13 fighters in the Lightweight Division so the top 3 seeds, the great Manny Pacquiao, Bert Somodio and Leo Alonzo will recieve byes.
Round 1: Isagani Pumar vs Johnny Alba - Pumar picked himself up from a knockdown in the 2nd round then proceded to punish Alba the rest of the way, nearly closing his left eye in his 10-4 10-4 9-6 decision. Tommy Romulo vs Young Corpuz - Corpuz was boxing well, but taking a lot of damage despite it, being knocked down 3 times, the final one for the 10 count in the 11th. I had it 7-3 Romulo while Tom Trunzo had it 5-5 through 10. Amado Cabato vs Tirso Dela Pena - Dominating performance saw Dele Pena down 4 times as Cabato parlayed the 2nd one in the 11th into the KO win. Nilo Acido vs Arnel Porras - Acido boxed the ears off the hapless Porras through most of this bout, earning his way to a 9-4, 11-2, 11-2 decision. Tirso Albia vs Battling Bulahan - Bulahan built up an insurmountable lead in the first 10 rounds with 3 knockdowns then held off Albia to win the 9-6, 8-7 10-5 decision. |

Philippines - Lightweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Manny Pacquiao vs Battling Bulahan - Pacquiao was having little trouble with Bulahan when at the end of the 2nd round he walked into a picture perfect hook that laid him out for the jaw dropping mega upset KO! This is in my opinion the single biggest upset to date with the 1 rated Bulahan moving forward over the 13 rated Pacquiao! Bert Somodio vs Nilo Acido - Somodio came out and dominated Acido with a wicked body attack to wear him down, then landed a quick powerful hook to lay him out for the 10 count in the 8th round. Leo Alonzo vs Amado Cabato - Cabato survived a 1st round knockdown to dominate, then just as Alonzo was mounting a strong comeback to pull within range of a win a nasty gash opened on the right eyelid to end the fight in the 13th for the upset TKO by Cabato. Isagani Pumar vs Tommy Romulo - Pumar was dominating when an accidental clash of heads opened a cut on the eye of Romulo to end the fight in the 6th and send it to the judges who had it 4-1, 5-0 and 5-0 for Pumar. |

Philippines - Lightweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Bert Somodio vs Battling Bulahan - Bulahan fought the fight of his life in the Quarter-Finals only to come out and be a punching bag for Somodio, going down 6 times before the 7th one for the count in the 11th round. Isagani Pumar vs Amado Cabato - Pumar out foxed Cabato through most of this fight despite a 2nd round that saw him on his backside. He continued to use the jab to good effect, opening bad cuts over both eyes that eventually ended things in the 7th round for the TKO. Final: Bert Somodio vs Isagani Pumar - Somodio was a whirlwind of action, smothering Pumar with punches at times. He scored the lone knockdown in the 11th and carried on to win the 9-5, 5-7(????), 11-2 split decision. Somodio improved to 3-0-0 (2) heading into the World Tournament. |

Pacquiao lost?! In his first fight?! Unbelievable! He would have been a medal contender had he made it to the world tournament.

There have been several upsets thus far, but that one's the biggest yet. Duran and Monzon being eliminated are also shockers.

Philippines - Jr. Lightweights - Round 1
There are 16 fighters in the Jr. Lightweight Division.
Round 1: Gabriel Elorde vs Rod Alcantera - Dominant performance saw Elorde pitching a shutout while picking Alcantera apart. In the 10th round he tore open a cut that ended things for the TKO. Ben Villaflor vs Benjie Duran - Villaflor wasted little time, scoring 3 knockdowns in the 1st round, and even though Duran beat the count after the 3rd with 1 second left, the referee waved it off for the TKO. Mike Ballerino vs Edgar Apatan - A brutal bout that sas both men cut and Apatan with a near shut left eye went the distance. Despite the 2 cuts recieved by Ballerino, he clearly dominated, scoring the lone knockdown and landing 570 punches to only 282 for Apatan. The judges scored it 12-3, 13-2 and 12-3 for Ballerino. Rolando Navarrete vs Rudy Cabiles - It took 9 rounds and 3 knockdowns to score the KO win against the hapless Cabiles. Johnny Sato vs Eddy Camero - An all out brawl that saw Sato get the best of it throughout the night despite no knockdowns. iIt went the distance with the judges scoring it 9-4, 10-3 and 9-4 for Sato. Tiger Ari vs Ian Fajardo - Ari came in the favorite, but wasn't able to separate himself from Fajardo. It was Fajardo that found his second wind in the championship rounds to seemingly put the win away. It went to the judges who agreed with the announcers and the crowd, scoring it 9-6 on 2 cards and 10-5 on the 3rd for Fajardo. Rene Barrientos vs Rod Sequenan - This started out a decent fight, but rapidly denegrated into a dancing match. Barrientos barely did enough to win most of the rounds as the judges saw it 9-6, 11-4 & 10-5 for Barrientos. Randy Suico vs Bobby Pacquiao - Decent action bout that saw Suico win the lion's share of the rounds in the eyes of both myself and Jim Trunzo, but the judges saw it closer, 8-6, 7-7 and 8-6 for Suico. |

Philippines - Jr. Lightweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Gabriel Elorde vs Ian Fajardo - Elorde was poetry in motion, fluidly moving around the ring and punishing Fajardo throughout his 12-2, 11-3, 11-3 decision. Ben Villaflor vs Rene Barrientos - Villaflor scored the lone knockdown as Barrientos couldn't find an answer to the speed and power of his opponent in this one. It went the distance with the judges scoring it closer than it was at 11-4, 9-5 and 9-6 for Villaflor. Mike Ballerino vs Randy Suico - Ballerino started off strong but in the 4th went down 3 times in the first 2 minutes of the round then was pummeled until the referee put a stop to the carnage for the Suico TKO. Rolando Navarrete vs Johnny Sato - Back and forth bout that saw Navarrete down 2 times early only to have him storm back with a knockdown of his own in the 13th as he seemingly took control of the fight in the final 5 rounds. It went the distance with the judges seeing it 9-6 on all 3 cards for Navarrete. |

Philippines - Jr. Lightweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Gabriel Elorde vs Randy Suico - Elorde chose to bang with Suico as he was a huge favorite coming in. His overconfidence cost him as he went down in the 7th and then in the 8th for the count of 10! This was the second major upset in the Philippine national tournament, though not as devastating as the one that saw Manny Pacquiao fall. Ben Villaflor vs Rolando Navarrete - A grueling fight that saw Navarrete stalking and at times hurting the vaunted Villaflor. Villaflor finally scored the lone knockdown of the fight in the 14th round to seal the deal, despite a furious rally in the 15th by Navarrete. The scoring was 9-5, 12-3 and 9-6 for Villaflor. Final: Ben Villaflor vs Randy Suico - Villaflor scored a pair of knockdowns, but it was the broken nose of Suico that just wouldn't stop bleeding that ended the fight in the 14th when the ring doctor deemed the damage far to hazardous to Suico's health for him to continue. Villaflor will move to the World Tournament with a 4-0-0 (2) record, where he's expected to go deep into the field. |

Philippines - Featherweights - Fight-Ins
With 23 fighters in the Featherweight Division, we will have 7 fight-ins to set the field at 16.
Fight-Ins: Johnny Dato vs Hilbert Aragon - Dato dominates an uneven bout that saw Aragon down in the 11th round as he was unable to see punches coming well due to major swelling around his right eye. It did go the distance with the judges scores being 11-4, 10-5 and 10-3. Silvino Jamito vs Pastor Calope - An uneventful bout that saw Jamito do just enough to win most rounds. The judges had it 9-4, 9-3 and 12-1 for Jamito. Baby Brown vs Ferdinand Caracena - Excellent action bout that had Caracena down 5 times and Brown 1 time. Brown went down in the 11th and picked himself up, gathered his senses then scored a pair of his own in the same round! It was a close fight that went to the judges who had it 10-5, 9-6 and 9-6 for Brown. Francisco Flores vs Edwin Casano - Flores survived an early knockdown in the 1st round to pound Casano into submission in the 2nd round. Raffy Aladi vs Joe Eagle - After splitting the first rather quiet rounds, Aladi smokes Eagle with an over hand right for the KO in the 5th. Cesar Amazan vs Battling Bolo - Bolo scored the lone knockdown of the fight enroute to a pedestrian 10-5, 12-3 & 10-5 decision. Joe Escriber vs Ros Dumaguilas - A back and forth bout with a few brilliant rounds and a lot of dull rounds went to the judges who saw it 8-7 Dumaguilas, 8-7 Escriber and 8-7 for Dumaguilas for the split decision. |

Philippines - Featherweights - Round 1
Round 1:
Larry Bataan vs Battling Bolo - Bataan picked Bolo apart, nearly closing his left eye and opening a cut on the outside of the left eye brow. It continued to bleed, but Bolo survived to go the distance where the judges had their say with scores of 10-3, 9-5 and 10-4 for Bataan. Jet Bally vs Ros Dumaguilas - Good close bout that had plenty of action throughout. Despite sporting a pair of cuts of his own, Bally stopped Dumaguilas in the 10th when a gash on the right eyebrow reopened for the TKO. Samuel Duran vs Raffy Aladi - Both men went at one another in this one, with little to choose from at times as the rounds were so close. Both men raised their arms in victory after the 15th round. I had it 8-5 Aladi while Lee MacRae had it 6-6 even. The judges scored it 7-6, 8-5 and 8-6 for the upset minded Aladi. Luisito Espinosa vs Baby Brown - Espinosa survived a scare in the 1st round when he was dropped for a 3 count, then proceded to dominate the rest of the way before scoring 3 knockdowns in the 15th round, the last one for the 10 count with 18 seconds left in the fight. He was up 12-1, 12-1 and 11-2 through 14. Young Nationalista vs Francisco Flores - Toe to toe action wasn't what was expected between these 2 boxers, but that's exactly what they provided in this exciting fight that saw Nationalista dominating despite some great work by Flores. He put Flores down 2 times in the 8th and finally scored the KO in the 11th round. Cris Saguid vs Johnny Datto - Back and forth bout that saw Saguid bleeding at the end from a cut on the left cheek. With so many close rounds it was a coin toss as to how the judges would see things. I had it 6-7 Saguid while Lee MacRae had it 8-7 Datto. The judges had it 9-6 Datto, 7-7 and 7-7 for the majority draw. The Rematch comes at the end of this round. Elino Flores vs Silvino Jamito - No cuts, no bruises, no knockdowns and little action was the hallmark of this fight as Flores did just enough to earn the 9-6 (x3) decision. Johnny Jamito vs Sugar Cane Carreon - Another close match that went back and forth mainly due to lack of action by one fighter or the other. I had it 7-6 Carreon while Mark A. Jones had it 6-5 Carreon. The judges had it 7-6 Jamito, 8-4 Carreon and 8-5 for Jamito. Rematch: Cris Saguid vs Johnny Datto - Datto had the misfortune of being cut in the first round of the rematch. He spent most of the fight protecting the cut to no avail as it reopened in the 2nd, 4th and finally the 6th round for the TKO by Saguid. |

Philippines - Featherweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Larry Battan vs Raffy Aladi - Battan was dominant in this one that was cut short by a cut over Aladi's right eye due to an accidental butt. The judges had it 8-1, 7-2 and 6-2 for Battan through the 9th round. Jet Bally vs Elino Flores - These 2 banged away at one another through a very close 15 round fight. Neither man went down, but both of them had major swelling at the end. The judges scored it 8-6, 7-7 and 8-6 for the winner by majority decision Bally. Luisito Espinosa vs Johnny Jamito - It took winning the final 2 rounds for Espinosa to put this one away 9-5, 7-7 and 8-6 for the majority decision. Young Nationalista vs Cris Saguid - Nationalista went down 2 times in the 3rd, but came storming back, landing a knockdown blow of his own in the 9th enroute to a dominating 10-5, 11-4 9-5 decision. |

Philippines - Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Larry Bataan vs Jet Bally - This fight was even through the first 11 rounds, but Bataan took over from there to win the 7-6 9-4 8-5 decision. Luisito Espinosa vs Young Nationalista - Nationalist and Espinosa battered one another until the 9th when Espinosa went down from a right cross. He got up, but a stiff jab tore open an earlier cut to stop the fight by TKO on cuts in the 9th. Final: Larry Bataan vs Young Nationalista - Nationalista scored knockdowns in 3 separate rounds but wasn't able to put Bataan away. With several very close coin toss rounds noone knew how the judges would score it. They had it 9-6, 11-4 and 8-7 for Nationalista who moves on to the World Tournament with a 4-0-0 (2) record. |

Philippines - Jr. Featherweights - Round 1
We have 15 fighters in this division, so top seeded Jesus Salud will recive a bye.
Round 1: Arnel Barotillo vs Ricarte Cainiela - Caniela scored a knockdown early and nearly closed both of Barotillo's eyes, but Barotillo came back with a pair of knockdowns of his own, including the KO in the 15th round. Jaime Barcelona vs Dino Olivetti - Olivetti did well early on, staying in the fight, but couldn't handle the power of Barcelona who scored the KO in the 8th round with a wicked right hand. Bobby Berna vs Andy Alagenio - Berna was dominant in this one, scoring 3 knockdowns, but unfortunately he cut easily and it reopened in the 14th for the TKO upset by Alagenio. All 3 judges had it 9-4 for Berna through 13. Jesse Maca vs Jonathan Albay - A low scoring affair with several close rounds, but Maca was clearly the better fighter and it reflected in the scorecards, where he won 7-4, 12-2 and 10-4. Archie Ano-os vs Nick Ampong - A lot of close rounds made this difficult to score as neither man went down and neither man truely asserted his dominance. It appeared that Ampong was the stronger man over all, and it reflected in the scorecards of the judges who saw it 9-5, 7-6 and 8-4 for him. Bong Arlos vs Maximo Barro - After a pair of feeling out rounds Arlos drops Barro for the count with a wicked cross to start the 3rd round. Little Bangoyan vs Joseph Paden - This one went down to the wire with Bangoyan scoring a knockdown in the 15th round to win the 6-7, 7-5 & 8-6 split decision. |

Jaime Barcelona vs Bong Arlos - Barcelona was boxing nicely but a cut on his right eyelid ended his night in the 10th round. Jesse Maca vs Little Bangoyan - A low scoring and tough fight to score netted Maca the 10-5, 5-10 8-7 split decision. |

Philippines - Jr. Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Jesus Salud vs Nick Ampong - Salud only needed 1 minute & 7 Seconds to land a viscious combination that floored Ampong for the count. Jesse Maca vs Bong Arlos - Arlos took control in the latter stages of the fight to win 8-7, 9-6 and 9-6 in a rather mundane fashion. Final: Jesus Salud vs Bong Arlos - Salud scored a knockdown in the 8th round while taking a dominating lead when a cut reopened over the right eye of Arlos in the 9th round for the Salud TKO on cuts. Salud improves to 3-0-0 (3) and heads into the World Tournament. |
