Chris,

I do catch the YouTube stuff. Also, when I can get into the website, I'll read articles from The Japan Times (but they limit non-scribers to three visits).

Yeah, I was surprised to learn of the Mongolian domination of the Yokozuna all these years. Before getting more deeply into sumo, I had just assumed that all the rikishi were from Japan.

I was also surprised when I learned from Benjamin's book that a few of the rikishi were from Eastern Europe.

It certainly is a rich, nuanced sport...much more than two fat guy pushing each other around in a little circle...lol.

Much more to it than meets the eye for certain. This past basho had the neatest move that I've seen to-date by Ura (a Juryo wrestler that will be up in Makuuchi division this March) - just watch the first 25 seconds of this video from day 13:

It is surprising to see the nationalities at the top. There are several Eastern Eupropeans as you mention and a Brazilian. Two of my favorites have been Amuuru (a Russian) and Osunaraashi (Egyptian) both of whom have had trouble staying up with the big division of late.

That was some move by Ura! One of the things that really impresses me is the footwork involved. Obviously, sheer bulk takes you far, but these guys really know how to use their feet.

It's truly amazing the degree of agility possessed by some of these big men.

Funny, I'm a total novice when it comes to sumo. This is only the second basho I've followed, and I bought Joe's game on a lark. My only regret is that I would have wished to discover the sport so much earlier.

It's totally addictive, and Benjamin's book alerted me to many of the sport's subtleties. Although you're much more knowledgeable that I on sumo, I think you'll really enjoy the book. It's informative but irreverent in a very funny way.

Just caught up with this, really hoping Shigaemon can pull it off and finally get to Yokozuna. It would really suck if he never get's the rank.

The March Basho starts this Sunday. I was hoping to "pre-play" it and release ratings for the 42 Haru 2017 Makuuchi rikishi. Still have a couple days to get this completed.

Hope all is well the basement dwellers.
