I might have to consider getting in when expansion hits. (I'd have to be either of my 2 fave teams-Blue Jays and Royals)
Note: I'd have to do better than the Royals GM/owners of the last 15 years.

That goes for anyone by the way - existing GMs will be given first crack at expansion teams if they want them - so if you're a fan of one of the expansion teams from 1961, 62, 69, or whenever, if you get in now, you can switch to your favorite when they join the league. The Pirates just lost a one-game playoff for the NL pennant last season, so they're a good team. The Braves need some work, if you'd prefer more of a challenge.

1931 Amateur Draft
The Yankees quest for quality pitching continues as they used their top pick not on the no-brainer best player (that'd be Jimmy Sheckard who has incredible talents and was an 80 out of 80 on the scouting scale), but instead tapped lefty Billy Wagner with the first overall choice.
Sheckard went to the Yanks' rivals across the Harlem River in the Polo Grounds. Looks like the Giants have a franchise player to build around. The third through fifth choices were all on outfielders: Fred Lynn to the third New York team (the one in Brooklyn), Abner Dalyrymple to the Braves and Raul Mondesi to the Tigers. All have the potential to be huge stars. The White Sox also bucked the trend and tapped a pitcher from a class that was much more talent-laden on the hitting side. The Pale Hose took Case Patten to bolster a sagging staff. My sleeper pick for the 1931 draft is first baseman Bill Buckner, a talented hitter who dropped all the way to Pittsburgh - 14th overall, but is probably a top ten talent. Pitcher Rick Camp was this year's "Mr. Irrelevant" - the last player chosen in the draft. As uslly happens in the american league the last few seasons the Tigers start off hot , only 2 games back of Chicago and Washington.
Leading Batty in BA is RF Big Sam Thompson hitting .418 , last season he finished with BA .356 and 26 HR's. Tied for the HR lead with Pujols is youngster LF Nanny Fernandez. We also have John Smoltz with 8 wins tied with Wickman, but cross our fingers as usally happens the Tigers pitching doesnt hold up late in the season.

1931 End of Regular Season
Well, it's interesting that the two CPU teams finished 1-2 in the NL. And for those who wonder - the teams are actually set as human controlled (so they don't get an "advantage" by being able to make changes mid-sim which the human GMs can't). I simply run the CPU manager on them before each sim.
In league trends, the Yankees continue to hit, but still can't pitch despite drafting pitchers at the top of the draft every year. The Bombers lived up to their nickname again - hitting 123 bombs this season, a lot more than any other club in either league (Pittsburgh's 67 led the NL and the Browns & Tigers both had 80 to tie for 2nd in the AL). Yankee first baseman Albert Pujols had 28 HRs, just one behind Hack Wilson for the league lead. Frank Chance was the only NL player to hit more than 20 and led the league with 21. Pitching-wise, the league ERA was 4.74 in the AL but 4.12 in the NL. So does the National have better pitching? Yes... and no. Some of that effect is because the best hitters parks are in the AL (Baker Bowl notwithstanding). The Pirates had a 3.53 team ERA, best in either league, while the Yankees were at the bottom with a horrendous 5.71 mark. No team surrendered 100 homers, but the A's were really close (99). The Yankees' Don "Caveman" Robinson freaked out the sim (it can't handle more than 255 earned runs), allowing 262 earned runs and going 8-28. The sim's report of his stats: 8-28, 0.19 ERA (because the earned runs flipped back to 0 at 256). His actual ERA? 8.51 The final standings (it's Pirates vs Senators in the World Series): Code:

Well - the Cubs improved to above .500 this season - but appear to have been done in by the worst fielding percentage in the majors at .966 and a league leading 218 errors.
Chief offenders include Barney McCoskey at 1B - with 40 errors and a .976 average - to compare - the Cubs 2B Jack Glasscock had a .979 fielding % John Dobbs - learning Left field - had a .878 fielding % in limited time - next year we're going to let him play with a glove. |

The Senators took down the Pirates in six to win the 1931 BaTTY World Series.
The 1932 draft pool is an interesting bunch. It's hitter-heavy again, which won't help the Yankees (I'm not poking fun, I'd like to see the Bombers get some pitching and win some pennants). The top hitters include Darryl Strawberry and Nomar Garciaparra, but this draft is LOADED with hot corner prospects: Edgar Martinez, Robin Ventura, Denny Lyons and Bill Mueller. There's also a top offensive catcher in Darrell Porter and a handful of top-notch outfielders in addition to Straw: Luis "Gonzo" Gonzalez and Pepper Martin to name a couple. Pitching-wise it's a little thin. Bruce Sutter's in there and so is Jose Rijo. Hippo Vaughn and Lefty Williams (of Black Sox fame) complete the quartet of possible first-round quality arms. Past that it's a pretty bland group. The Yankees pick first - according to the sim, they're weak at 2B, SS, LF and SP. There are obviously a #1-worthy SS (Nomar) and OF (Straw), but will the nod go to Sutter or Rijo instead? The Phils are second - and with a need at 3B (incumbent Billy Nash hit .228 in 1931), Edgar Martinez is almost a no-brainer for them (he's 8-8-5-8-8 in talent so who cares if his glove is less than, um, stellar). The Giants, Tribe and Dodgers round out the first five picks. The cpu-controlled Braves & Bucs are 15 & 16 respectively.

1932 Amateur Draft
A surprise at the top as the Yankees selected LF Luis Gonzalez with the first-overall pick, taking the 4-star Gonzo instead of such 5-star prospects as Edgar Martinez, Darryl Strawberry or Denny Lyons. The latter trio were the next three to go, with Lyons to the Phils at #2, Edgar to the Giants (he's going to love hitting in the Polo Grounds!) at #3 and Darryl to the Tribe at #4. The first pitcher taken was Jose Rijo to the Dodgers at #5.
The last "80" on the scouting scale to be chosen was Nomar Garciaparra who dropped all the way to #8 for the Cubs, a steal for them at that slot, although it's tough to argue with the selection of Bruce Sutter just ahead of him at #7 by the Tigers. The Yankees may have gotten the steal of the draft by getting Pepper Martin with their 2nd round pick. Pepper can play 3B or OF and should fit in nicely in the high-octane New York offense. They still need pitching though ![]() Darrell Porter, the best catcher in the crop slipped to #15, going to the Braves. 4.5 star catchers don't grow on trees, and Porter could be a huge pickup for Boston as they try to chase down their cpu-brethren, the 1931 NL Champion Pirates in 1932. Do not adjust your monitors... the Yankees are indeed in first place after getting off to a fast start. With Gaylord Perry performing like an ace and the other starters not killing the team, perhaps this is the year for New York to make a run at its first pennant.

After an April that saw him hit just .250 with no homers, the Commerce Comet belted 10 in May, tying him with the Yankees' Albert Pujols for the AL lead, and is on pace for 39 for the season. The Athletics' centerfielder's career high is 28, and he hit only 15 last year. Robin Yount continues to perform at a very high level despite being 38 years of age. The Cardinals' stalwart is already the career leader in hits with 3370 (Mantle is the active player closest to him and he has 2510), runs (1712) and RBIs (1724). This season, Yount is hitting .378 and is on pace for another 200-hit, 100-run, 100-RBI season.

No worries the Yankee's lack of pitching will catch up with them

With the fortunate pick of No-Mah with the 8th pick - the Cubs would like to put Vern Stephens on the block.
A 3.5 star SS, and at 30 with several more good years in him - Vern can help you win now. A step up if you're using, say Cesar Cedeno, or John McGraw as your shortstop. If you want slightly younger - may I suggest 28-year old Willie Kamm - great batting eye and excellent OBP. Pitching, prospects and outfielders pique my interest. |

White Sox are interested in adding a C. I have two good SS's myself, the young Granny Hamner or Lou Bierbauer. Any prospects can go.
Good god, I need a pennant.
