Not so sure there ever were any catching skills to be deminished (sic).

The Dodgers and now the Mets have always wanted Piazza at first base mostly to save his knees and lengthen his career. Piazza has always stubbornly held to his desire to catch, regardless of the defensive shortcomings or damage to his knees.

If he still wants to catch then I would think it would curtail his value to other teams. He's missed a lot of games these last few seasons, presumably due to wear and tear on his body. Maybe the Dodgers are looking at this as a one year stop gap which then wouldn't be quite as bad but I'd still rather keep Green.
