FINAL 3 weeks of '46

9/1 PHI @ DET: loss 2-5 Harley Melzer (7-5, 4.46) gave up 5ER in 8.1 IP for the loss. Don Vonkitzing (4-3, 4.98) got a POG CG Win giving up only 2ER. Philly C Gordon Meadows was the top batter today going 2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. 2B Rem Kelley and 3B Gord Gentry also homered for them.

9/3 NYY @ DET: WIN 3-0 Hal Andrew (12-4, 3.37) pitched another CG shutout for POG honors. Buddy Greenberg (5-14, 4.01) only allowed 3 hits and 3R (0ER) in his CG Loss. We had 3 runs today, but 0 RBIs as 3 errors and some ill-timed walks proved costly for the Yanks.

9/4 NYY @ DET: WIN 5-3 Bob Guilderson (14-16, 3.42) got POG honors and the Win giving up 3ER in 8 IP. Alex Footwangler got his 9th Save pitching a no hit 9th. STANDINGS
-We gained 4 games, but still finished 8 games back... 3rd in the AL. Fourth best overall.

BAD NEWS
-We were pretty much out of it before September, but we stayed focused on Winning. It won't help our draft position, but it's not in me to not go for the win every game.
-Hal Andrew had been on a real hot streak but then flamed out for three losses in his last three starts.

GOOD NEWS
-Bob Guilderson enjoyed more run support this month and turned in a Winning record on the last game of the season.
-Not only did Ray Kress finish 1st in the AL in HRs this season, but he also committed zero errors in LF for the entire season. His average was down from last year, but still respectable at .307. He was an All-Star and in my opinion worthly of a Gold Glove.

SEPT CALLUPS
-1B Denny Caneer was leading the Triple AAA HR race by a long shot - he ended his AAA season with 50.
-LF Isaac Mitchell is our 3rd round pick this season. He hit .302 in AA and then an even better .314 in AAA.
-SP Carl Gibbs had a nice AAA season going 17-9, 3.06 - I should have called him up long ago as Worried Wes aged very quickly this year.

INJURIES
-Carl Affee was injured while making a catch on 9/7. Rollin Fish put into the lineup replacing Affee at CF for the final week so he could focus on healing up.

Pretty impressive... and beating Simson to boot. Must've felt good to sweep the Browns.

Yea, I was a little suprise we swept them and any day we can manage a win over Simson is a reason to celebrate.

I've been away for a bit, but I'll be picking up again after spring training '47 and doing a detailed preseason look at this years Tigers. I'll not only preview the active roster, but I'll give them minors a peek as well this year.

I do have one off season trade to announce. 2B Ray Dimeo and 1B Denny Caneer were shipped to the Yankees for 1B George Young. I had hoped to have a blockbuster to announce but one trade was called off and this one was paired down a little bit.

Although, hate mail from the Dimeo fan club is starting to trickle in, there is some upside here. Dimeo was going to lose at bats this year as Ormiston is starting to look like the power hitter we envisioned with him. I truly believe that with a good spring training, he could be the guy who pushes past our own Ray Kress for the AL HR lead. And young Matt Perly has nearly matched Dimeo's bat while showing more defensive potential at 2B. We want both Ormiston and Perly starting and this trade allowed Dimeo to continue his role as a starter elsewhere. Our only other option was to ask Dimeo to convert to 1B and we just didn't want to do that to a 36 y/o 2B All-Star.

Also, we get a 21 y/o 1B prospect who has the look of a classic over achiever. He comes to work every day with a fire in his eyes. This is his third organization in as many years, but we don't feel he'll be a disruptive influence in our club house as his fire is usually directed at opposing pitchers or any fielder who dares to block a bag when they see this big guy coming at them. He's the kind of hard-nosed, no-nonsense guy we want on this team and hopefully in a year or two he'll be ready for the bigs.

I just wanted to point out to any readers who may be less familiar w/ TWB's history that Detroit has struggled for most of our 46 years. They put together a great core club in the late 20's and won their only WS (and only pennant) in 1928, defeating a favored Braves team. In 1932, with a major decline in pitching, they went on to finish dead last in the AL in 7 of the next 12 seasons and had losing seasons for 13 straight years until 1945. It's amazing that they are now pennant hopefuls. Best of luck to g00se and those loyal Tigers fans!

Thanks for the update and hsitory bio. Myself, I may be in the few here but I've found that tryign to figure out the history and players fo this league to be a slower process than I envionshed. Writeups like this one really help out with both the enjoyment of the game, and also gives an idea of whose good and who well.....sucks. Keep it up, I'll try to see if I can get one of my own going as well.

1947 preseason notes

=====================================
Catcher:
---------------------------
Starter - Bud Moore will start on most days as he did last year. He's a good all around hitter who will bat 5th in the order for now. Last year he hit .281, 9HR, 77RBI, 75R. He can also fill in at 3B in a pinch.

Backup - Peter Murovic is nearly Moore's equal in every way. He will give Moore the occasional day off as well as come in as a PH.

Def Replacement - Vincent Solinger isn't as good a contact hitter or patient at the plate as the other two, but he has a much stronger arm to throw out runners. Very solid defensively. I wouldn't hesitate to start him or any of my catchers on the active roster.

=====================================
1B: backup 1B/CF Dixie Douglas retired
---------------------------
Starter: Rik "the Greek" Kaladimos had a decent season last year - his first as a starter. He hit .282, 76RBI, 63R and was second on the team with 15HR. He will get the bulk of the starts at 1st and once in a great while will fill in at 3B. He's penciled in to bat 7th in the lineup.

Backup: Wally Cruce was called up to take over the backup spot at 1B. He's an aggressive hitter, but doesn't show much power potential or as much discipline at the plate as I'd like. He isn't very fast, but has uncanny instincts for stealing a base. Neither he or Kaladimos impress me much with their glove work.

=====================================
2B: Dimeo was traded away to the Yanks.
---------------------------
Starter: Matt "the Whale" Perly has been manning the 3B spot for four years now despite only being 24. He is much better defensively at 2B than he was at 3B. He's also better than Dimeo was with his glove. Combine that with a .304 career batting average and an improved power stroke after spring training and I think we have 2B well covered despite the loss of our All-Star Dimeo. Perly is penciled in at the #6 spot in the lineup but may move up to 5th if his power at the plate continues to improve.

Backup: Roxie Liggett is a good contact hitter that just hasn't gotten an opportunity to get a whole lot of at bats due to our depth in the IF. He hit .364 last year, but really only got 11 AB in 17 games. He should see a whole lot more at bats this year due to finally being the primary backup at 2B. He has a solid glove but not as much range as Perly.

=====================================

Starter: David Castineda got the full time nod last year and will have it again this year. He only hit .241, but his bat isn't why I like him so much. He has phenomenal range at SS and a decent arm. I'd like to see him be a little more patient at the plate, but he is still young, so that will come in time. He's scheduled to bat last in the lineup.

Backup: Tom Hoelscher is the opposite of Castineda. He's not very good defensively. He's also not as good at making contact as David, but he can hit for power and shows good plate discipline. He's a better 2B defensively than SS, but right now is our only backup SS so he will be focused on that position.

=====================================
3B:
Starter: Luther Ormistion - Yes, we will try it again this year and this time stick to it. Luther is penciled in at the cleanup spot and for good reason. He swings a monster bat. If he can just develop a little consistency at the plate, then he will fit the clean up spot well. Last year he wasn't ready, but this year he is hoping to get into a HR contest with last year's AL HR leader - our LF Ray Kress.

Backup: For now, Matt Perly, Rik Kaladimos, and Bud Moore are the guys available to give Ormiston the occasional day off. But if Luther had to go to the DL, I'd probably start Moore here or call up Darling or Iggy Chenault if it looked like a long stay on the DL for Luther.

=====================================
LF:
Starter: Ray Kress is a very good all around hitter who made another power leap, maybe due to Luther's challenge. He will definitely be the most feared Tiger bat. He lead the AL in HRs and committed 0 errors in 148 games in LF last year. He was an AllStar and hit cleanup most of last year. I'm going to have him hit out the three spot this year to get him a couple extra at bats each week. Hopefully, he'll leave Luther some RBI opportunities. Kress' AVG was down to .307 last year but hit for more power. He should be better this year

Backup: Rollin Fish will get the bulk of the OF backup work. He played well defensively at all three positions and will be the primary backup at all three spots again this year. He also hit a respectful .267.

Other: Issac Mitchell was our third pick in last years draft and has already sky rocketed to the active roster. We needed a second backup in the OF and he will get the occasional game in LF and RF. He's an aggressive contact hitter, but shows little power or patience at the plate. He'll mostly be called upon as a PH when we are desperate for a single.

=====================================
CF
Starter: Carlton Affee turns 37 this year, but is most definitely one of our best hitters. He's a good all around batter who also plays a solid CF defensively. He hit .312 last year as wasll as 10HR, 83RBI, 84R. So far he shows no sign of slowing and will hit lead off this year now that Dimeo is a Yank.

Backup: Rollin Fish is the only backup guy on the active roster who can handle CF. CF was one of our least represented positions in our organization so we drafted an excellent (defensively) CF in the second round named Pete Short. He could be called up if Affee or Fish were to end up on the DL. Short will never be a star at the plate, but he does have gold glove potential in CF and can play any OF positions with confidence just like Fish.

=====================================
RF
Starter: Carl Sandoz has a career AVG of .326 and hasn't even hit his peak yet. This will be his 4th year as a full time starter in RF and will hit behind Affee. He can be streaky at times, but quite often comes through in clutch situations.

Backup: Fish and Mitchell as mentioned above.

=====================================
Starting Pitching

1- Bob Guilderson throws hard and has good movement on his pitches. He barely turned in a winning record last year, but didn't enjoy as much run support as the rest of our pitchers until the finally month of the season. Our already good offense should be better this year, so maybe Bob will get into the race for Wins this year. 17-16, 3.39 ERA

2- Vic Gorin just turned 38 but still throws some filthy stuff. He lead our team in wins last year with 20 and assuming his age doesn't catch up with him too quickly this year, should come close to 20 wins again this year. 20-15, 3.56 ERA, 168Ks

3- Hal Andrew doesn't throw as hard as our other starters, but has by far the best control. He's turning into a good all around pitcher. I'd just like to see him keep the ball on the ground a little more than he has in the past. He only started in half the games he pitched last year and '43 was his only year as a full time starter, but hopefully he'll hold onto his spot in the rotation all this year and also go for 20 wins. 13-7, 3.56 ERA

4- Harley Melzer will get the final spot in the rotation. He was in and out of the rotation last year as he seems to have been most of his career. But this year gets a shot at being full time as we don't have as much of controversy in who should start this year as we did last year. He throws real hard, but doesn't have a lot of movement on his pitches. He does a great job of keeping the ball on the ground. Hopefully with an improved middle IF, he'll have more success this year than in the past. 8-6, 4.06 ERA

=====================================
Bullpen
Closer - Alex Footwangler was unable to resolve his stamina problems so we couldn't move him back into the rotation. However, he was a solid closer so he will start this year where he finished last year. Hopefully he will stay healthy and lead the league in saves. Out of all our pitchers he is the most consistent. He throws hard and had the best ERA on the team last year at 2.84. 6-3, 11 Sv

Setup - Lloyd Wyman started last year as our closer, but was too inconsistent to hold the spot. He throws hard, keeps the ball on the ground and works hard a holding runners. He seemed to pitch a little better in the setup role than he did as the teams closer, so he will stay here for now. 5.01, 2-7, 13 Sv

MR - Stan Leveck is another starter who struggled with stamina problems. He has an interesting mix of pitches and is a decent all around pitcher. 4.42, 8-6

MR - Rob Blaisdell got his first real action last year pitching in 43 games - by far his most in a year in the bigs. He managed a decent ERA of 3.68. He really doesn't stand out in any particular way. Bottom line though, he got the job done and was fairly consistent all season long. Hopefully he will find a way to do so again this year. 3.68, 5-1, 1 Sv

Spot Starter - Jocko Bradshaw just turned 37 and has average all around skills for a starter. My gut tells me I should cut him and last year's 5.46 ERA doesn't help him much. I'll give him some opportunity to hold his job, but if he struggles, I'll release him and call up waiver wire pickup Mike Downey. 5.46, 1-2

Mopup - Alan Paule seemed the most ready for a call up besides Mike Downey. But, I like Downey more as a starter and Paule more as a bull pen guy. So I want to give Downey some quality starts in AAA until a DL situation forces me to need a starter to be called up. Paule is an average pitcher with decent movement on his pitches. He doesn't have the stamina to make for a real good starter, so I feel justified in calling him up as the last reliever to fill out our pen.

Tigers Farm System - been travelling and am running out of steam, but hopefully this post makes some sense...

AAA

SP1 Mike Downey - As mentioned above - he was an off season waiver wire pickup and is first in line to be called up if a AR starter goes to the DL. He's an average starter with decent movement on his pitches. He does a good job of keeping the ball on the ground and is a good defender.

SP2 Jack Boe - is only 22 and has the potential to be a decent starter, but is still a couple years away. He has a good variety of pitches and just needs to work on his "stuff", velocity, and consistancy a bit before he'll truely be ready for a callup.

SP3 Russ Treadway has never really reach his potential and at 30 I wonder if he ever will. Another average pitcher, but will be a career minor leaguer if he doesn't step up soon. He shows decent control and also a decent ability to keep runners in check, but is very average in every other way.

SP4 Bud Ulrich reminds me a little of a young Bob Guilderson although he doesn't throw as hard as Bob. Bud is still a couple years away. My AAA manager says he's not ready to face AAA batters. My AA manager says he was ready a while back. He went 3-1, 1.60 in 5 GS last year in AAA, so I'm going to leave him where he's at for now.

MR Steven Brown has good control, but doesn't throw hard enough considering that his two pitches are the fastball and split finger fast ball. But at 26, he still has time to grow.

2B Steven Zucal is an excellent defensive 2B. He is also a very patient hitter and a good base runner. If an injury were to happen Perly or Ligget, I wouldn't hesitate to call up Zucal.

3B Clinton "Buster" Darling. He's a decent all around batter who still has some power potential he hasn't tapped into yet. He's not the greatest glove at 3B. He also plays LF with limited range. But he could see some time on the AR if Ormiston were to go down hard.

LF Buddy Mankus is an very good defensive LF. But that's about the only plus. He doesn't have a whole lot of chance at any real PT on the AR.

LF Terry Nickel is a poor man's Buddy Mankus. He's got even less offensive skill and doesn't play with much range in LF. He's working on learning RF right now because we already have LF well covered defensively.

========================
AA

SP1 Gerald Thienemann - Career minor leaguer with little chance for parole. He pitched well in A ball (16-9, 2.93) in '44, but has held an ERA of 4.45 in AA in the last two years and doesn't show much room for growth. Looks like he's gone as far as he's going to go.

SP2 Larry Denmire - He is another who may never make it. He pitched well in A ball last year going 15-8, 2.58 ERA, but he shows very little control. Only time will tell if this 26 yo has what it takes to move on. He has a better shot at AAA than Gerald, but I seriously doubt he will ever be able to control his stuff enough to face major league batters.

C/3B John "Dirt Bag" Degal - he is still young but has worried me with the lack of progress in the last two years. His stats actually went down last year. I am trying to wake him up by moving him up from A ball. I just hope I don't hurt his development by moving him up if he isn't ready to step up the challenge. He is decent defensively at C and 3B but his best asset is his potential to be a good power hitting catcher. I hope to see him take over for Bud Moore when Moore is ready to call it a career.

CF/LF - Ron Campsey has decent speed and good instincts and could be a decent PR. He is patient at the plate, but struggles to make contact. He's not the greatest glove we have in the OF, but one of the few guys who could fill in at CF.

1B George "the Instigator" Young is not a gifted athlete. He's not fast but has decent instincts. He could be a decent contact hitter with some HR power. He's better defensively than any 1B we have in our organization, but it wouldn't take much as most of my 1B suck with their glove. He is an awesome sac bunter. I think in a couple of years, he could challenge Kaladimos for the starting 1B spot, but I don't see him ever being the AllStar type so we will continue to look at upgrading at 1B at some point. Still, I like the fire in his eyes and wish everyone in our organization was as focused and hard nosed as Young.

SS Russell Kalin is pretty much just someone we have on our roster in case we have a rash of injuries at SS and even then, we'd turn to Zucal first. He's an average glove with an average bat and below average speed who will most likely be a career minor leaguer.

3B/LF Iggy Chennault is very close to going back to AAA. He's got a decent glove and has the potential to be decent / patient contact hitter.

========================
A

SP1 Sam Cheney - This years #11 draft pick. He's got the potential to be a good all around pitcher with good velocity and endurance. He's little bit error prone with the glove but is already an excellent sac bunter. He (like most of my A ball starters) will almost certainly beat my current AA SPs to AAA. Already my scouts are telling me he's ready for AA, but I'll give him a month or two before I consider promoting him already.

SP2 Errol Roberts - He has pitched well in A ball for six years now, but has not been giving the green light to go to the next level. He can't seem to get his velocity or endurance up where we want him, otherwise he'd be ahead of Cheney in the depth chart. I'm tempted to move him up anyway, just to see if he steps up. He's got lots of potential, but like some of my A ballers, doesn't seem to be moving anywhere fast. He's a month away from 25 so hopefully he'll step up soon. Like Sam, I'm going to give him a month or two to see if he's ready for AA ball.

SP3 John Faucette - happy birthday to John, today he turned 24. He is our second round pick from 1945. He has phenomenal stamina and excellent velocity. If his skills ever catch up with his raw talent, he could be a good one some day, but he is currently no where near ready for AA yet as he needs to work on all his fundimentals. He is also a bit of a liability with his glove.

MR Oswald Adkins - Our third round pick of this years draft - my assistant made this pick and I'm not overly happy with it. There was a decent defensive Catcher still available and he picks a MR with limited potential when I already have two other MR in A struggling for a promotion. My assistant did well picking up Mitchell last year, but he may have struck out with this one. Oswald is good at holding runners, but other than that has the potential to be a very average reliever at best.

MR Tim Donahue - But, then again my second round pick from last year wasn't a ton better than Oswald. I think Tim has the potential to be a better than average reliever, but I think I stretched for him as he looks more like an early third rounder. But hey, I was a rookie so cut me some slack. Tim is still a teen so I'm hoping he exceeds current expectations and becomes the solid setup man I envisioned when I draft him. He's excellent at holding runners and keeps the ball on the ground. He has a decent but unspectacular glove. Unfortunately can't bunt to save his life or that of any base runner but as a setup man, he probably won't see very many at bats.

MR Magnus George was our 1945 3rd rounder. I like Tim's chances of making the AR more so than Magnus. But I also feel Magnus has a better shot than Oswald. Magnus does have the best defense on the mound out of the three and also holds runners pretty well. He still has room to grow so maybe he'll make it to the bigs some day.

4/6 DET @ NYY: loss 5-8 Bob Guilderson (0-1, 3.72) fought off back spasms and only gave up 3ER in 7IP, but got the loss. He is expected to be Day-2-Day for the next 7 weeks. Buddy Greenberg out pitched Bob giving up only 1 ER in 8IP for the Win and POG. For NYY 1B Denny Caneer continues to make us pay for trading him. He hit another HR for his only hit of the game. 4/9 BOS @ DET: WIN 9-8 Hal Andrew (1-1, 4.24) got the Win giving up 5ER in 8IP. Alex Footwangler got his 2nd Save pitching the final 2 outs after Jocko Bradshaw nearly blew the lead giving up 3R HR in 9th. For BOS, SS Rusky Lutske (3 for 4, 2R, 4RBI, 1BB, 1HR) and 2B Maurice Goza (3 for 5, 3R, 1DBL) played well. For us, Luther Ormiston got POG honors going 3 for 3, 3R, 3RBI, 1HR. Mat Perly had 2 doubles and an HR going 3 for 4, 2R, 3RBI. Calton Affee went 3 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB. SP Hal Andrew helped his own cause going 2 for 3, 1RBI.

4/10 BOS @ DET: WIN 9-8 Harley Melzer had another bad start giving up 7R (2ER) in the first inning. He then pitched 5 more scoreless innings. The Win went to Stan Leveck (1-0, 0.00) who was the pitcher of record in the 13th inning. BOS SS Rusky Lutske had another monster game going 4 for 7, 1R, 2RBI. BOS LF Al Arsenault hit a 2R HR for his only hit of the game. POG honors went to our LF Ray Kress (2 for 6, 2R, 3RBI) who's two hits were HRs. Rik "The Greek" Kaladimos also managed a 3R HR.

4/11 BOS @ DET: WIN 11-4 Bob Guilderson (1-1, 3.24) gave up 3R (2ER) in 7IP for the Win. For BOS, LF Al Arsenault had another good game going 2 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. For us, Matt Perly got POG going 1 for 3, 2R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Luther Ormiston also hit a 3R HR for his only hit of the game. C Bud Moore went 2 for 5, 2R, 1RBI, 1 DBL. Unfortunately, we committed 2 errors today and 3 yesterday. Gotta work on them fundamentals.

POG went to WSH C Robert Reed who was their only big man at the plate today as he went 2 for 3, 2R, 4RBI, 1BB, 2HR. For us, Carlton Affee went 2 for 5, 2RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1SB. Ray Kress was 2 for 2, 2R, 2BB, 2DBL, 1SB. Luther Ormistion went 2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1BB, 2DBL.

4/13 DET @ WSH: loss 1-2 Hal Andrew only gave up 1 ER in 7IP and WSH SP Zolly Schoeter only gave up 1ER in 8IP. However, the win went to Chris Frays (1-0, 2.08) who pitched a scoreless 9th and 10th innings. The loss went to Alex Footwangler (0-1, 2.45) who was unable to hold. We only managed 5 hits, 2 of them came from Carl Sandoz. For WSH C Dutch Kahle hit a couple of doubles.

4/14 DET @ WSH: loss 3-7 Harley Melzer (1-1, 5.66) had another bad game giving up 7R (6ER) in 6IP for the loss. POG honors and the Win went to Van Melbourn who gave up 3ER (0ER) in 8.2IP. Van added insult to injury by hitting a grand slam on a 2 for 4, 2R, 2RBI day and to further rub salt in the wound even managed a stolen base. WSH 3B Jungle Jim Dunkel also hit well going 2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. For us, Carl Sandoz went 3 for 4, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 5. David Castaneda managed 2 errors today... time for some butt chewing.

4/15 DET @ PHI: loss 7-8 Bob Guilderson's (1-2, 6.27) back spasms got the best of him today as he gave up 8R (7ER) in 2IP for the loss. Our pen managed finished the game with 6 scoreless innings but the damage had already been done. The win went to Chubby Allen (1-1, 8.89) despite giving up 6 ER in 8IP. PHI CF Harry Badeau went 1 for 2, 1R, 2RBI, 2BB. Their RF Hershel Cooley went 2 for 5, 2R, 1DBL, 1SB. For us, Luther Ormiston got POG honors going 1 for 4, 1R, 4RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Matt Perly also homered going 2 for 5, 1R, 2RBI. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB. Ray Kress went 1 for 3, 3R, 2BB.

RECORD
6-7 / 2GB / 6th in the AL

BAD NEWS
-Bob Guilderson was injured two innings into the season and was declared day-2-day for at least 7 weeks due to back spasms.
-Harley Melzer is off to a terrible start as well. If he cannot turn it around I may be forced to call up Mike Downey much sooner than expected.
-Rik Kaladimos is off to a slow start batting .184.
-Matt Perly has also been a bit streaky at .240.

GOOD NEWS
-As expected after spring training, our HR numbers are up this year. Matt Perly, Luther Ormiston, and Ray Kress are all tied with 3 a piece. I guess Perly didn't want to be left out on the HR challenge issued by Luther to Ray.
-With the exception of Jocko Bradshaw (7.36 era), our bull pen is off to one of its best starts.

4/16 - 4/30

4/16 DET @ PHI: WIN 5-3 Vic Gorin (3-1, 4.71) got POG honors for a CG Win giving up only 3 ER. He held the A's to 3 hits and 3 BB. Matt Perly had a 3 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL day. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 4, 1HR. Ray Kress also hit a solo shot for his only hit of the day. David Castaneda hit a 2R HR as well.

4/17 DET @ PHI: loss 9-10 Hal Andrew gave up 8R (6ER) in 7.2 IP. -John "Dirt Bag" Degal has not responded well to being moved up to AA, may have to demote him before he loses confidence.

This month Vic Gorin moved up into the #8 spot in Career Strikeouts leaderboard.

He will retire at the end of the season but if he stay's focused and healthy has a shot at moving up to #6 spot.

Are Melzer's days as a starter numbered?

Nope, Melzer had one bad game and two good games in May. I'll take that ratio from my #4 guy.

Andrew has also been looking sharp.

Unfrotunately, Gorin has gone 0-3 with two real stinker games since I praised his career leader board accomplishment.

Guilderson has been streaky, but hopefully, he'll settle down when he's finally healthy.

With three of my starters over the age of 35, I'm very nervous about next year. Hopefully, my minor league pitchers will grow up fast.

Looks like Ulric has gotten knocked around a little bit this last couple of weeks. It's kinda frustrating when the AA coach says promote him and the AAA coach says demote him. He started the season well. Might have to listen to my AAA coach and demote him if he doesn't get back on track.

I don't have any real solid options for replacement. Mike Downey would be OK as a #4 guy. But, I don't see him being any better than the four I'm running with right now. It'd take a DL issue or a complete melt down of one of my current starters before I'd go that route.

I hear that. I was just informed that my ace will be calling it quits after the end of this year (DOH!!!!!), so like yourself in a smaller way, i've gotta scramble to find a replacement....and coming up empty at present. I've got some prospects, but they're like years away from being ready.
