Just for fun I tried this trade using Cardinal Fan's most up to date roster set. I am two months into the season. FLA is 5 games over .500 and LA is 3 games over under my expert management
with cpu trades turned off.Florida will trade me Penny and Choi for just Lo Duca or just Mota!

Interesting. The only problem I see is that it doesn't factor in how much you'd have to pay them to take Encarnacion.

Paul homers the first pitch he sees as a Marlin. Pitch hits in the bottom of the 6th with the Marlins down by 1 and homers to put them ahead.

One other thing that may have factored into it: at the end, it seems (according to Gammons) that LA was the only team in the running for Johnson. If that's the case, and SF and SD were no longer part of the picture, then LA refusing to do the deal is the same as SF and SD not getting him, which means no RJ in the West and LA gets to keep Werth and Penny.
One more thing, for what it's worth. Finley is in phenomenal shape for a guy his age. Plus, he's been a positive clubhouse presence his whole career, a real gamer. He may not replace what LoDuca meant, but he brings the right attitude. Last edited by Tib; 08-01-2004 at 10:10 AM. |

Good job Marlins trading a 28 year-old pitcher and a 25 year old first baseman for an OF they didn't want and best of all, a 33 year old Catcher!!!!
I like loDuca as much as the next guy, but a singles-hitting catcher is bound to drop off considerably once his knees give way. It won't just be a question of him not hitting doubles anymore, but he'll be lucky to even walk to first-base by the time he's 35. |

So this looked like a typical statheadzzz trade?
Paul Lo Duca: highly-regarded intangibles, main strength in singles, old, going to be expensive soon. Guillermo Mota: can't get rated higher unless he becomes a closer, reliever , kinda old, going to be expensive soon.Juan Encarnacion: eh? Brad Penny: young starter, still relatively underpaid. Hee Seop Choi: young and cheap homer and walk guy. Bill Murphy: traded to Arizona in the next trade.
