Not sure why it isn't understood. Adding another point of view to the picture. IMO there are more items that can be tweaked, fixed, whatever than the minimal number of foul balls that "slow down" the game by 20 or 30 seconds.

I use the number keys on the regular keyboard instead of the keypad. By doing this, my pitcher's OBA is lower.

That's how I play...1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1...
I can knock out a whole 9 inning game in about 4 minutes.

sigh. the foul balls annoy, and given that I can see the merit in having this game appeal to more people (and there are people who are looking for a slightly more arcade version). I think having the ability to turn it off would be nice- it would fit in with the general view of OOTP as customizable. I have admitted to getting annoyed with foul balls, but that's only because Ive played enough that i know literally pbp string- and seeing the same one for foul balls every time gets irritating.

Well, for one it would make the game quicker. I hate those 11 minute games with the 8:32 start times. My bedtime is 8:40, so i can't see the end of them.

I agree with you Fish. What I want from a company when I spend my hard earned money giving them my financial vote of confidence is to know that my concerns count to them. Good customer service is a dying art these days. At least three responses to your thread have asked for an option to turn off the foul balls. I do not own the game yet, but how the company reacts to your concerns will definately weigh on my decisions. I run my own business and the customer is KING or QUEEN whatever the case may be. They do not get lectures when they contact me with concerns, they get SERVICE! Obviously I cannot meet every demand, but when I can't meet a specific need I usually prefix my response with an apology and I also try and direct the customer to where they can get what they want. That is what I expect so that is what I give.

OOTPB is very good at public relations and responding to our inquiries...they just can't do everything that we want...but they really try hard to please us all...which is impossible to do.

We have had 3 updates/patches for OOTP5...this is unheard of in gaming circles.

THEY DO RESPOND TO OUR REQUESTS AND NEEDS.

I really love the game...and one day it will be more like what I want it to be personally...but it will take time...and the OOTPB staff and developers will probably take it to the level I want.

I think this discussion has gone full-circle at this point.... Let me quote one of Markus line items for Version 6....

"1) Brand new in-game engine. I have learned so much in the past 5 years, mainly by watching a lot of baseball and your input. So, I feel it's the best way to completely recode the game engine (including play-by-play), to incorporate the things that are currently not very realistic and adding a lot more variety, and possibly even pitch-by-pitch."

Given the fact this entire area is being recoded, and the possibility exists that pitch-by-pitch could be incorporated, it's reasonable to expect foul balls could become part of the pitch-by-pitch mode - and play-by-play may not include them.

I'm sure Markus has read the thread and will do his best to include a system that will make most of us, if not all of us, "happier"

We're only 4-5 months away from it now

I didn't mean to offend anyone here at OOTP who works hard. I am sure customer support here is very good, I have heard that more than once in another post I have. It is obvious that the game staff works hard and that customers are important. I am sure that all of the people in this forum can't be wrong. Actually an idea forum like this is excellent because it gives the manufactures an accurate pulse of customer needs.

Howdy,

My buddy and I are new to the game, and enjoying it very much. We're at the end of June in our first season of our league and I just want to add my voice to those who are unhappy with the pbp and distribution of the foul balls. I don't have any objection to foul balls per se, obviously they are a part of the game. What I'm finding annoying as it comes up on a regular basis in our games, is that if someone fouls one off, there will be a sequence of almost always 3 foul plays that you have to set the defence and pitch for each time. It breaks the immersiveness of the game for me knowing, here comes a sequence of 3 fouls, and also steals confidence that each defensive reset is independent and the results are indeed random.

[But our hatred of Klumpy, the random number generator, is yet another thread.]

I wanted to add two cents in the context of the version 6 development. I realize that this late in the version 5 cycle that it isn't likely to be addressed. It is likely the most negative thing about a game that has us "just playing one more" at midnight and poring over stat sheets to complete trades at 3am on work nights. A relatively minor quibble.

I'm glad this got brought back, because I wholeheartedly agree. I would have no problem with:

...hits it down the leftfield line, fair if it stays...
...but, it's just a long, loud strike...
...fouls it back behind the plate...
...but the catcher can't get to it...

and so on, for each foul ball. the fact that you have to reselect the strategy every time is very off-putting. I hope Henry is right...if there's a pitch by pitch, fouls would be important. If not, or if there's also a regular mode, I'd like to see the current system changed.

It's well known that some people would prefer the ability to turn off foul balls.

But foul balls do NOT ruin the game. They only mean a few extra mouse clicks from time to time.

So let's wait and see what Markus does with version 6 before getting overly excited about this issue once again!

I don't think anybody's getting overly exciting.

It just seems that the number of people who truly feel strongly about the foul balls HATE it. While everybody else thinks it's cool or likes it or whatever. The minority isn't that small and is much more emotional about the issue.

Let's talk about this stuff...instead of stifling discussion.
