In 1947, just the second season of the PWBL's existence, the St. Louis Cardinals won 105 regular season games and defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series in six games. In 1948, with mostly the same supporting cast, the Cardinals again reached the World Series by winning 94 regular season games and then the one game playoff with the Cubs. Although they lost the Series to the Red Sox, the Cardinals were still arguably the most talented team in baseball.

After the 1948 season, free agent to be Hank Greenberg shocked the city of St. Louis and all of baseball when he announced his retirement after going three for three in NL MVP's in the PWBL. Although the Cardinals still had a roster full of talent, the Cards chief competition the Dodgers and Cubs appeared to improve themselves in the off-season.

It looked to be a close race going in to the season and, indeed, the Cubs and Braves roared out of the gate to hold the lead for much of the first two months. The Cardinals were never far behind, but it looked as though a changing of the senior circuit guard might take place. Over the next four months however, the Cardinals showed why they had won the previous two NL pennants. The Dodgers gave the Birds some competition, but in the end the Cardinals were just too good as they finished at 92-62 and a full 4 games ahead of the Dodgers.

Although they were able to overcome it and still win the pennant, the season ending ruptured back suffered by top-shelf starting pitcher Murray Dickson seemed to dim the Cards chances at post-season glory. Unfortunately for their World Series opponents the New York Yankees, the Cardinals pitching staff was more than capable in the first six games of the Series. Birds pitching allowed an average of just two and half runs per game during the first six games, with starting pitcher Al Brazle. Brazle, who sported a 1.06 ERA in two Series starts, was Dickson's replacement in the rotation.

After their marathon 13 inning game six victory, the Cardinals were able to trot Cy Young runner-up (and 1948 winner) Howie Pollet out to face the struggling Bombers lineup. In game seven however, it was the Cardinals bats that told the tale. With great performances from 3B Whitey Kurowski, 2B Erv Dusak, and Series and NL MVP 1B/OF Stan Musial, the Birds led 7-1 in the seventh and went on to withstand a late Yankee charge to win the deciding game 9-5 and win the 1949 PWBL championship.

With three straight pennants and two crowns in four years, the Cardinals are the most decorated team in the PWBL. With key players like Musial, Dusak, Kurowski, and Pollet in their prime, veterans such as Dickson, Enos Slaughter, Harry Walker, and Harry Brecheen, and top young talents in Gil Hodges and Les Moss, the Cardinals should be the prohibitive favorite once again in 1950. Regardless of the outcome of next season, there is no doubt that entire St. Louis organization has reason to feel proud for what has already been achieved.

That's only because the league is so much big fun! The great owners in the league are what makes it all worthwhile!

Andy thanks for a great and well ran league, look forward to being back at the helm of the Boston Braves in 1950. Although my talent in the minors is non-existent, my Major league talent should be strong. So if any member of PWBL wants pitching, I will trade for draft picks or prospects!!

Congrats St. Louis on winning the World Series!!

The week that the lights went out in Boston:

The Boston Braves were right in the thick of the pennant race heading into July. On the 17th of July with a 54-36 record, and battling for 1st place with the Cardinals, Dodgers and the Cubs; All-Star Pitcher Dizzy Trout was drilled by a line drive off the bat of Brooklyn Dodgers rookie Luke Easter. That line smash knocked Dizzy Trout to the disabled list for 7 weeks, and prompted a trade with the St. Louis Browns for veteran starting pitcher Ellis Kinder, but cost the Bravo's 2B - Nellie Fox.

The Braves never recovered from that blow of the bat of Luke Easter, and were shocked again a week later when sporting a respectable 56-40 record; Left hander Warren Sphan was drilled by a line drive off the bat of New York Giant's 2B - Buddy Blattner, this shot landed Spahn on the DL, prompting for additional changes to the Bravo's pitching staff....The spiraling effect so took over and the Braves went on to peter out down the stretch and finish 76-78.

Bah, humbug. The A's will celebrate Connie Mack's fiftieth and final season as manager with victory in the 1950 World Series. The players have vowed that the Tall Tactician will leave in a shower of champagne.

Congrats to Brian and the Cards. Good luck to Jim and the Yankees next year, they'll need it.

New York- With the last pitch thrown to (SS) Phil Rizzuto by (SP) Howie Pollet, The St. Louis Cardinals were once again crowned world champion's of the PWBL, Winning the World Series for the second time in 3 year's.

After the onfield celebration of hug's and tear's of happiness, The players walked off the field of Yankee Stadium and into the clubhouse. Waiting for them were cold bottles of champagne to uncork and lather one another until the bottles were empty, The scene of the clubhouse were of players yelling " We are the champs", "We are the champs".........Players crying, Congratulating one another of a season that alot of baseball people thought improbable.

In through the clubhouse door walked NY manager Casey Stengel, As the player's saw this the clubhouse grew silent, All eyes on the professer as he walked up to St. Louis manager Eddie Dyer, extending his hand, Whispering in his ear, Dyer nodded his head in agreement, Stengel turned to face the players, "Gentlemen, Never in my managerial career have I seen such a fine group of player's, You player's play the game the way it's suppose to be played, With heart and determination, Not for a minute did I see you quit or give up. The championship is your's. I know my team wanted it just as bad as you player's, But we came up short and my hat is off to you, You deserved this, Congratulations boys". The player's cheered as Stengel exited the clubhouse door.

From the background, Baseball commissioner "Happy" Chandler stepped to the front podium, First shaking the hand of GM BC Stone and then manager Eddie Dyer, With the World Series trophy in hand, The commissioner then presented the tall golden trophy to both Stone and Dyer, "On behalf of the owner's and Major League Baseball, I'd like to congratulate the ownership, Front office and player's of the Cardinals, For a job well done, You truely deserve this championship trophy", Chandler then handed the trophy to GM Stone, And then in turn gave the trophy to manager Dyer who then hoisted the trophy above his head, With tears flowing down his cheek, The player's then started chanting " EDDIE......EDDIE.......EDDIE", Dyer tried to speak, But was having a difficult time getting anything to come out of his mouth. The players then grew silent looking towards there leader, "Boy's, I'm having a hard time taking all of this in, I personally am so da.....................m proud of all of you !, Other's did not think we would be here, But I always did believe in all of you, Not for a second did I doubt this team, All of you have the heart the size of New York, And the desire no one can match. You can now hold your heads high and know............Your the best and we have the trophy to prove it", As Dyer walked off the podium the players cheered, Each and every player walking up to Dyer and hugging him.

Off in another room seperate from the clubhouse, GM BC Stone sat down with Cardinals radio announcer Harry Caray of KMOX radio to do this interview.........

Caray: Well Brian, How does it feel to be world champion's.

Stone: Harry, I can't describe the feeling I have, Not only for me, But for Eddie and the player's.

Caray: This is your second year as the GM of the Cardinals, Tell us a little of what it's been like since your arrival in St. Louis.

Stone: Well, I had the good fortune of being hired for the position of GM of the Cardinals organization, The previous GM did an outstanding job with the team, Just coming off a 105 win season and a world series title in "47", The challenge for me was keeping the team competetive, While also working within the teams financial structure. I've had to make some tough decision's concerning personnel, And so far it's worked out.

Caray: In the clubhouse, The celebrating continue's, But this championship seems much more emotional than the one in "47"......Why....?

Stone: Good question Harry, Going into the year it was believed by me and my staff, That this would be a down year for the organization. Hank Greenberg had retired and we made a couple of deals for a couple of youngster's in Hodges and Moss. We knew there would be some growing pains with them and that the offense may suffer because of that. We also had to move Martin out of the pen into the starting rotation, Leaving us short and depending on a young unproven MR Buddy Lively. So there were alot of unanswered question's concerning the team. The player's knew this as did Eddie. In the early part of the season, We struggled, And it didnt help matter's that Hodges and Moss were struggling mightily, We then decided to send Moss down to the minor's and replace Hodges at first with Musial, And put Al Gionfriddo in LF, Which worked out very well. Gio fit real nice in the 2 slot and had a great season. We then had major injuries to Pollet, Who was out for 5 weeks and then lost Murray Dickson for the rest of the season, To top all of this off, Harry Brecheen had an off season, So you add up all the adversity this team had to overcome, And you understand why you see the emotion and the tears.

Caray: Tell us about the strategy you and Eddie Dyer used coming into the Series up against the Yankees.

Stone: It actually started the last week of the season, We had a 2 game lead on the Dodgers with 4 games to go, Both Eddie and I knew we would have to shake the dice abit to get the matchups we needed against the Yankees or Red Sox. We moved Max Lanier into Howie Pollets spot in the rotation and moved Pollet into the 3 slot, So we would have Pollet starting games 1,3,7 in the series. We also sat down Al Brazle that final week, Not using him at all. We needed to have him in the rotation, Fully rested. So it was a gamble, One that worked out.

Caray: The Yankees had a great year, What was key in your mind to beating them.

Stone: I knew we had to throw left handed pitchers against them, If we were to have any chance. They justed killed righties this year going 78-46, While on the other hand they just werent the same team against lefties going 17-13. We knew we could play with them offensively, But the pitching matchups were vital, Thats why you saw Pollet and Brazle pitching 5 of the 7 games. If you noticed, No knock on Fred Martin, But he lost both games he pitched. The Yankees feast on RHP.

Caray: There were quite a few players that were key in this series, Who do you think had the biggest impact.

Stone: Where do I start. To me, Musial was huge, But the player that played a major role in this was (SP) Al Brazle, Without him, We would not have won the series, He came up big in game # 3 and the now unforgetable game # 6, He pitched his heart out that game along with our pen, And dont forget, Hit that 2 run homer to tie the game to keep us in the series. It dosent get any better than that.

Caray: Lets look forward to next year, What do you see for the Cardinals.

Stone: Harry, Let me enjoy this............lol..............As you know were losing 3 very good players in (OF) Terry Moore, Pitcher's Brazle and Martin with the idea of bringing up SP Bob Cain to slide into the rotation, We will be looking to fill some of our needs through free agency. We would like to add a right handed bat for the OF and sign a couple pitchers to fill the loss of Al and Fred. And who knows what the draft will bring.

Caray: There are a number of young up and coming teams in baseball, What do you see in the N.L. next year.

Stone: There certainly are Harry, You saw glimpses of what it's going to be like in the near future. The Boston Braves were an early power until injuries decimated there pitching staff, They just didnt have the depth to sustain those losses, Then you have the Phillies who are on the verge of having a great team, A little more seasoning and a couple key additions and they will be tough to beat, And then you have the NY Giants who you have to be concerned with, Add to the mix the Dodgers and Cubs and we have our hands full for sure.

Caray: Is there one team that stands out to you in baseball.

Stone: Yes, The Philadelphia A's, In my opinion they were the best team in the A.L., Had they gotten off to a good start, We would have been facing them instead of the Yankees. I believe they will win the A.L. next year barring injuries.

Caray: I want to thank you Brian for taking the time to sit down with us tonight, And congratulations on your teams world series victory.

Stone: Thanks Harry, It was a very interesting year and loads of fun for myself and the team. Were looking forward to next year, But first there's alot of celebrating to do for us and the fans of St.Louis.

Fantabulous story, Brian. An A's/Cards series would be just the ticket next season.
