Tonight will take us up to the final week of the regular season. The Red Sox and Dodgers must win and have some luck on their side. Should be great fun

Yankees open with three against the A's whilst the Red Sox are duelling with the Browns. Would make the final week of the season a real page turner if the A's swept NY. HR's Cubbies would answer the prayers of Dodger fans with a similar result.

Ok, lets watch our language on the boards huh! Speaking about sweeps of the Yankees really is going too far don't you think. Pretty soon you'll be making comments about my mother.

Let's Go A's!

The Red Sox managed to get through a 3-week injury to Teddy Ballgame last year to sneak up and grab the crown.

And lost in the chase for .400 and the pennant - is the fact that if Williams can get a hold of a few in the next two weeks - we could also be talking Triple Crown. He's 2 off the pace right now.

Exciting! Those 1-run games are killing Boston...but they are making a run.

Very interesting results. I look forward to perusing the boxscores. The Browns were a big part of the A's 9-13 September wilt last season and are making life miserable for both the Yankees and Red Sox this go round.

Boston righted themselves against the Tigers but will curse their misfortune against the Browns if they come up short in the final week. Yankees had a horrible time with both the A's and St. Louis. Their lead looks a bit tenuous at the moment.

Cards took care of business and look comfortable despite losing a notch from their lead. Still, stranger things have occurred.

Edit: Despite their tremendous power hitting, the Yankees offense is not a club strength and it seems to have failed them again.

Okay - this day needs a little more description. The Red Sox led this game 5-0 going into the bottom of the ninth.

Then...
Pitching: Ned Garver
1B Vic Wertz:
Base on balls.
LF Dick Sisler:
Base on balls.
V. Wertz to second.
C Joe Garagiola:
Base on balls.
V. Wertz to third.
D. Sisler to second.
SS Eddie Lake:
SINGLES to shallow left-center.
V. Wertz scores.
D. Sisler to third.
J. Garagiola to second.
2B Red Schoendienst:
Popped out to the first baseman.
PH Al Rosen:
SINGLES to center
D. Sisler scores.
J. Garagiola to third.
E. Lake to second.
New pitcher: Jess Dobernic.
CF Hoot Evers:
PH Gus Zernial:
Strikes out swinging.
3B George Kell:
GRAND SLAM HOMERUN down the left field line. (374 feet)

Yikes! And how 'bout those Browns playing spoiler! If they're not careful - they'll play themselves into a worse draft pick.

What has happened to Jess Dobernic this season? From 1.69 to 4.63 is quite the leap in ERA. Looks like Roger knew what he was doing in moving him.

Edit - He beat me to the punch

In further Red Sox News - Ace Dave "Boo" Ferriss was knocked silly by a batted ball in Saturday's 13-3 thrashing of the Tigers - and will apparently miss his turn in the rotation. Rumours abound that he MIGHT be ready for the season finale - if needed.

Dobernic had an awful start to the season for the A's - He's actually done nicely for the Sox - though he's had a very scary September.

And considering Zuber's 36 - and was up for a new deal - the younger cheaper Dobernic and Majeski (who's did nicely when Pesky went down with an injury) was something I couldn't turn down.

Dobernic was almost unhittable the first half of the '48, his rookie season, but hitters seemed to get a bead on him late in the year and his faltering performances were no small part of the A's September collapse.

When the '49 season began, Dobernic's struggles grew epic and the decision was made to shop him for the Red Sox aging closer, Bill Zuber. Connie Mack was convinced that he would make a terrific starter and since the deal was struck, Zuber has made the conversion seamlessly. His current numbers are 16-4 W-L, 220 IP and a 3.64 ERA.

Mack has already announced that he will return for his 50th year in the A's dugout and hopes are high in the City of Brotherly Love that the old-timer Zuber will play a big part in a final pennant for the Tall Tactician.

One final note before I call it a night. Ted Williams lost just two points on his heavenly batting average and steams into the final week with a .407 figure.

Putting the Splendid One's achievement in some context, only 8 AL hitters have managed to top the .300 mark, including Mr. Williams. The A's on base machine, catcher Bill Salkeld, is second at .338.

Final Final Note: Dino Restelli smashed 3 more HR for the Indians, giving him 33 on the year and 19 in his last 155 at bats. He also crossed the century mark in RBI with 55 of them coming in his last 41 games. His second half numbers have been astounding. A 2nd round selection in the most recent ammy draft to boot.
