I wouldn't celebrate too much, however. I will stand down for "my" team (as opposed to standing up) by saying it would be a mistake to judge your team's talents in a game against the Giants.

Once again, we witness this kind of specialty that this miserable football team offers season after season:

Ask yourself: How does a center fumble the ball?

I am at a loss to explain this phenomenon. The Giants have lost so many games by playing in this manner that it's almost their trademark. But it persists, coach after coach, GM after GM. What is it?

Absolutely, the Giants were an all-around hot mess last night. I am already concerned with the as-yet sight-unseen Jets next week. I do think that this defense will be their backbone but I worry that the offense won't be able to provide enough help.

The headline in The Athletic was "Giants’ prime-time train wreck offers sobering reminder they’re not in Cowboys’ league." I'd say. One factoid they offered:

Quote:
It was the Giants’ 12th loss in their past 13 games against Dallas.

The Giants went 0-5 against the top teams in the NFC East last season, including a pair of one-score losses to the Cowboys. The expectation was that an upgraded Giants roster would be better equipped to compete with their division rivals. Instead, the Cowboys handed the Giants their worst loss since 1973.
Cowboy hats off to your guys for their persistent respectability and competitiveness. It goes back to my plaint above; why is it some teams have those qualities and some don't, season after season after season?

Well, enough of that. As I have said of previous annual NFL threads, I don't want to turn them into Giants threads. Frankly, they don't deserve such consideration. I will now revert to my proper stance regarding them: indifference.

Competitiveness in the regular season gets you nowhere if you can't get to the super bowl.

I've maintained for over a decade now the diff between 12-4 & 4-12 is 4-5 players/injuries. A talent or injury here or there can tilt the scales.

But I also think you need a GM/Prez/Owner that don't give a fig about the headlines. Too many personnel decisions are made based on what sports radio will praise or criticize. O linemen & DT's aren't sexy picks or signings. But how many bad offenses do you see w/2 or more Pro Bowl linemen? How many bad defenses do you see w/an all-star tackle over the ball? Those positions don't get Skip Bayless chattering. It's the ball carriers that cause the noise. Organizations that make sure they are strong up front & know how to judge talent up there generally are consistent winners.

I bet next off season, any decent FA O lineman is going to get a blank check from the NYJ/NYG..

Unbelievable the Bills let the Jets win this.

Josh Allen owes the whole team an apology.

Well. At least one New York football team can play with brains and heart, and even without Mr. Big Deal, Aaron Rodgers.

The Bills offensive line got beat pretty badly by the Jets defense. Obviously a lot of football is binary but I feel like Josh Allen played pretty well considering how the Jets defense played. Definitely not the worst 4-turnover game I've seen from a quarterback. The interceptions were not good plays and two of them were definitely on him but that's generally his game, his aggression gets ahead of him sometimes and a decent amount of the time he gets away with one or two more of those in a given game.

I'm glad to have seen a moment like the punt return touchdown before the reality of Zach Wilson sinking this great defense sets in now that Rodgers' achilles is presumably taking him out for much if not all of the season.

Detroit @ Kansas City(-6.5) (KC $20) - I had a feeling this one might end up wonky. That's why I only bet $20. TOTAL: $980

Carolina @ Atlanta (-3.5) (CAR $5) - Carolina came up empty. Total: $975

Cincinnati(-2.5) @ Cleveland (CIN $10) Cincy layed an egg as well Total: $965

Jacksonville(-5.0) @ Indianapolis (JAX $50) - Fianlly got a winner but it put me over the top. Total: $1015

Tampa Bay @ Minnesota (-6.0) (MIN $25) - Was kinda surprised by this one. Total: $995

Tennessee@ New Orleans(-3.0) (TEN $10) - The spread saved me on this one. Total: $1005.

San Francisco (-2.5) @ Pittsburgh(SF $20) - 49ers won going away. Total: $1025

Arizona @ Washington (-7.0) (ARI $10) - Arizona saved me with the spread again. Total: $1035

Houston @ Baltimore (-10.0) (BAL $75) - Scored a big win on this one! Total: $1110

Up $110 in the early games thanks mostly to Baltimore!

Green Bay @ Chicago(-1.0) (GB $10) - Green Bay did okay minus Rodgers. Total: $1120

Philadelphia(-3.5) @ New England (PHI $20) - Eagles barely beat the spread. Total: $1140

Miami @ LA Chargers(-3.0) (MIA $10) - Dolphins came through for me on the road $1150.

LA Rams @ Seattle(-5.0) (SEA $50) - This one will hurt for awhile. $1100

Dallas(-2.5) @ NY Giants (DAL $20) - Cowboys win big. $1120

Buffalo(-1.0) @ NY Jets (BUF $100) - Well, this one hurt. Between Seattle and Buffalo those two games killed me but I am still plus on the week overall.

Total after week 1: $1020!

Starting Cash: $1000 Bankroll: $1020

Week 2:

Minnesota at Philadelphia(-7.5) - $20 MIN - Yeah I know the Eagles have pedigree but I don't think the Vikings are bad enough to lose by a TD.

Green Bay(-3) at Atlanta - $30 GB - I think the NFC South is pretty weak overall compared to the NFC North.

Las Vegas at Buffalo(-9.5) $50 LV - I need to take this before the line goes down.

Baltimore at Cincinatti(-3.5) $10 BAL - I think this should be closely contested.

Seattle at Detroit(-5.5) $30 DET - Seattle looked pretty miserable in week 1, and Detroit had the big upset against KC.

LA Chargers(-3) at Tennessee - $5 TEN - Nothing about either of these two teams gets me really excited.

Chicago at Tampa Bay(-3) - $5 TB - Ditto.

Kansas City(-2.5) at Jacksonville - $20 KC - I don't see the Chiefs laying an egg twice in a row, although maybe the Lions formulated a way to beat them.

Indianapolis at Houston(-1) - $10 IND - Could see this going either way, although I think Houston is more in line for the top overall pick.

San Francsico(-7) at LA Rams - $50 SF Rams had a good week 1 vs. the Seahawks but 49ers look to be much tougher.

NY Giants(-4.5) at Arizona - $20 NYG Cardinals are another team that could be in contention for #1 overall pick.

NY Jets at Dallas(-3) - $30 DAL Jets got an inspirational week 1 win, but Dallas looks very motivated and talented.

Washington at Denver(-3.5) - $5 DEN Can't believe the Broncos lost against Las Vegas won't put anything past them here.

Miami(-2) at New England - $5 MIA - Could really see this going either way, gonna be a low scoring defensive game I think.

New Orleans(-3) at Carolina - $10 NO - Don't see myself betting a lot of money on any NFC South games probably.

Cleveland (-2) at Pittsburgh $5 CLE - Two teams that struggled in week 1, another game that could go either way.

Total at stake: $295

Two thoughts this morning about last night's Bills-Jets game:

1) Jeez, what a friggin' anticlimax after all the hoo-ha in recent weeks about Aaron Rodgers coming to New York. Four plays and one pass and his season his likely over. After all the rigmarole, the Jets are right back where they started at QB.

2) Kickers and punters would not like me at all as their head coach. Because, I would make those sissies practice open-field tackling for the very situation that the Bills faced at the end of the game. Here is Bills punter Sam Martin, the last man standing between Xavier Gipson and the goal line, attempting a tackle by swatting at Martin's helmet.

It was pretty sad this evening to see that ABC made Aaron Rodgers' unfortunate injury one of their top news stories. They ran it *before* stories about the heartbreaking disasters in Libya and Morocco.

I'm guessing some teams/coaches have their kickers & punters actually practice this stuff. But for most of these guys, doing it reasonably well in practice and doing it reasonably well for real on the big stage might be two different things. Some PK's & P's are studs no matter what, but most aren't.
