The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that left-handed pitcher Cooper Hjerpe will miss the entire 2023 season after being diagnosed with a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow.
The 22nd overall pick in the first-round of the 2022 Amateur draft out of Oregon State University, Hjerpe pitched in five spring training games for the Cardinals this season all in relief.
He worked a total of 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing of right-handed starting pitcher Michael Wacha to a minor-league contract.
Wacha, 31, spent most of the 2022 season with the Boston Red Sox where he went 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 23 starts.
He began his career with the Cardinals, breaking in with the team during the 2013 season when he went 4-1 in 15 game/nine stars with a 2.78 ERA as he helped the team reach the World Series.
In seven seasons in St. Louis, Wacha went 74-50 with a 4.05 ERA in 225 games/204 starts.

Long-time Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright has announced his retirement from baseball after 17 seasons in the major leagues.
Wainwright, 41, spent his entire career in St. Louis, first coming up during the 2005 season and then serving as their postseason closer in their run to a World Series title in 2006.
He joined the rotation in 2007 -- when he went 14-12 with a 3.70 ERA -- and outside of a couple of major injuries remained there through the conclusion of the 2022 season.
In 2022, the right-hander went 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA.
The Cardinals declined to offer him a contract for the 2023 season, but unlike long-time teammates Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina -- who both opted for retirement, Wainwright opted to test free agency.
The best offer he got came from the San Francisco Giants -- one year worth $1.6 million -- and with that, Wainwright decided to retire.
For his career, Wainwright pitched in 457 games/390 starts and went 195-177 with three saves and a 3.38 ERA.
He and catcher Yadier Molina also set the record for most starts by a pitcher-catcher combination with 327.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed rookie starting pitcher David Matos on the 10-day injured list after he had to leave their 6-2 loss to Milwaukee on March 30 in the first inning.
Matos was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation. He is expected to miss two weeks.
Signed out of Cuba as a free agent in the offseason, Matos pitched in five games/four starts during spring training going 1-2 with a 2.63 ERA.
