I'm now in the 1881-82 offseason in my fictional universe and since in the real-life 1882 the American Association was formed, we have new leagues. These leagues will be based in the Midwestern United states, and there are three of them: one "major" league, and two semi-pro independent leagues.

[NOTE: for clubs in all three leagues, I fudged founding dates using years that real-life teams were first founded in their cities using the same source that I did for the previous leagues: the Spread of Baseball link at the Major League Baseball website.]

First up, the "major" league: the Midwestern Baseball Association, which consists of ten teams from the eight largest cities in the Midwestern United States - all having 75,000+ residents - as of the start of the 1880s.

The second league is the GREAT LAKES BASEBALL CONFERENCE, which consists mostly of cities in states bordering the Great Lakes that had 25,000+ residents at the start of the 1880s, with Duluth tacked on to make it an even ten.

[NOTE: to be in this league, I decided that only cities/towns in N/NE Wisconsin and Northern Illinois and not the whole state would qualify]

The final league is the PRAIRIE LEAGUE, which has ten clubs in ten cities across the prairie regions of the Midwestern United states. There are some modern metropolises in the mix, but at the time places like Kansas City, Minneapolis, and St. Paul weren't that big. However, those regions would see population spikes of 125-275% over the decade of the 1880s. For instance, Minneapolis saw its population rise 251% from the 1880 census (46,887) to the 1890 census (164,738).

I decided not to use the OOTP23 jersey format because, after taking some looks at it, I decided that it's still a little too vague-looking in some areas to attempt to successfully move over elements from previous jersey templates - I use Silvam's (spelling?) - so for now the previous format will have to do.

All good, sorry to hear, that is quite unfortunate. Hope you are doing a lot better now.

Had to focus on a new job over the last month but we're now into the 1884 season, which saw four teams move into the APBL and thus four teams added to the NBBO. They look as follows...

Going into 1885, and another new league begins: the Southeastern & Atlantic League of Baseball, a.k.a. the SEAL league.

Here are the primary logos:

That sure made for an exciting finish as it looks like all but one were very evenly matched and basically anyone could have won it!

Congratulations!

On to 1890 in my fictional universe, where the original NBBO splits into separate leagues and the NBBO itself becomes an association.

Here's how things stand. First, the two associations:

THE AMERICAN BASEBALL ASSOCIATION - covers the two main professional leagues...

The American Professional Baseball League (APBL - Northeast US)
The Midwestern Baseball Association (MWBA - Midwestern US)

THE NATIONAL BASEBALL ORGANIZATION - was the original competition (1857), but now covers the following...

The New York League (NYL - the premier semi-pro league)
The Prairie League (PL)
The Great Lakes Baseball Conference (GLBC)
The New England Baseball Association (NEBA)
The Northeastern League (NEL)

Next up, the first professional league: the APBL. Here's how it looks in 1890.

For all collages, primary logos are on top and secondary logos are on bottom

APBL Colonial Conference

APBL Metropolitan Conference

The APBL has been in the same state since 1884, when four teams - Baltimore, Jersey City, Providence, & Washington - entered the league from the semi-professional ranks.

Next is the other main professional league, the MWBA. It has 14 teams to the APBL's 16, but all 14 teams are in one division in this league.

MWBA Secondary Logos

Previously in the thread, you'll see that the MWBA originally had 10 teams. That's because those were the large cities in the Midwestern US as of 1880. By 1890 (in real life) the cities of Kansas City, Minneapolis, Omaha, and St. Paul had all more than doubled in size to over 100,000 each, which meant they were more than big enough to have professional-sized venues.

Third is the other full-time league, but it's a professional league that doesn't have the markets of the first two and thus doesn't have the same reputation and isn't part of the ABA.

The Southeastern & Atlantic League (SEAL)

The league originally started with six clubs - Atlanta, Charleston, Memphis, Nashville, Richmond, & Savannah - but two were added ahead of the 1890 season. Evansville, located in far southern Indiana, joined after eight years in the GLBC, while Old Dominion started up after the Chesapeake area grew quickly over the previous decade.

Next up, the first part of what is now the association-level NBBO: the New York League, which is made up of the NBBO's former Brooklyn and New York City championship divisions.

Next is the Great Lakes Baseball Conference, one of the two semi-pro leagues outside of the Northeastern US.

Great Lakes Baseball Conference logos

The league started with ten teams, and it still has ten even though Evansville left. They were replaced by the Erie Lakers, formerly of the NBBO's Inland Championship.

Next is the semi-pro league covering the Midwestern United States, the Prairie League.

Prairie League logos

After four of the founding members - Kansas City, Minneapolis, Omaha, & St. Paul - left for the MWBA once they became too big for semi-pro ball, four clubs jumped in to replace them. Two - Council Bluffs & Davenport - are based in Iowa, while one - Kansas - is on the other side of the border from the Kansas City Bulls and the other is based in the south of Missouri.

Council Bluffs has its name because, in real life, it was designated by President Lincoln as the official starting point of the Transcontinental Railroad (link), and in the present day it's home to the Union Pacific Railroad Museum.

Davenport's team has its name because it's located on the border of Iowa and Illinois along the Mississippi River (link)

Kansas has the Blue Stockings name because in real life Kansas City, albeit the Kansas City in Missouri, was home to a late-1800s minor league named the Blues (link)

Southern Missouri has its team name because the team's base of Springfield, MO is known as the "Queen City of the Ozarks" (link)
