Bonds did stick around for the 1998 season. He's now 44 years old and playing in his 19th season. Bonds joined the 400 home run club early in the 98 season, joining Babe Ruth and Juan Gonzalez. His longevity has also given him a slight chance to catch Ruth and maybe Tris Speaker for career WAR.

Another season, it's August 16th 1998 and Kansas City sits atop the AL West standings. Just amazing.

In his only full season Mike Trout took home American League MVP honors. Trout has now been in the league roughly 5 or 6 years and the league is seriously thinking about naming the injured list after him. Sad too as Minneapolis, Trout's team has really put together quite the roster. Joining Trout in the lineup are Jim Rice and Robinson Cano. On the mound, is Tom Seaver. Minneapolis is currently in second place in the AL West behind KC and just ahead of Indianapolis.

Will this be the final season for JD Martinez? Not based on his performance it won't be. JD turned 42 on August 21, 1998. Martinez may be having his 3rd or 4th best season of his career, so if it turns out to be his last one, it's quite the swan song. He's hitting in the .330's, with 37 home runs. He just crossed the 1500 rbi threshold for his career. Thing is, prior to this season, JD has been on a steep decline over the last few years. This is why I love this game. The little surprises along the way.

Are you planning on keeping this league going or start a new one?
I recently had a random going for 17 years and thought I would keep it going for about 100 years but, but, but, came up with another idea (sometimes I wish I wouldn’t do that).
Started regular historical in 1895. Unclicked retire according to history and miss season according to history. 3 year recalc with development on. Fast sim to spring of 1900 and converted to random, zero out career stats entire history etc., and using 1984 for base stats. So for 1900 (first year of random league) all the players were from 1895-1900 and at the end of the year random players from 1901-2020 are drafted. Basically the league starts with players like Wagner, Lajoie, Mathewson still in their prime and slowly transitions to the random players.
Anyway, I enjoy seeing how you league is going.

My intentions are to keep it going. In the final weekend of season 19. I know exactly what you mean about new ideas. I have the itch to start a straight historical, but really want to see if I can get this one to 30 or 40 seasons. One thing I'm doing with this league is fast simming to July each season and then watching a game per day from that point on. This is allowing me to get through seasons and enjoy history building.

Will this be the final game for Barry Bonds? If so, it was a nice one.Name: the_final_countdown_1998-10-04_09-17-32.jpg

I think I've decided to ignore the little flub I made and just ignore the 99 post season as a whole. I will honor New Orleans as champs, but think of them as having an asterisk next to their 99 title. Way too much history developed to trash this league over my silly bafoonery. So, after a weekend break, I started back in this morning playing the 2000 season.

We've had 3 players reach the 3000 hit mark during the 2000 season. JD Martinez, Dan Brouthers and Javier Baez.

Dwight Evans is probably next in line to reach 3000.

Wow, didn't see that coming. Steve Garvey sets the new single season RBI record driving in 167 during the 2001 season. Charlie Hickman held the previous record of 164. Hickman also set the current single season home run record (50)the year he drove in 164. Garvey on the other hand, only hit 26 home runs on the way to his 167.

Jimmie Foxx hit 47 home runs in 2001.

Closers are such a strange lot when you play random debut. It's always fun to see what pitchers the AI decides to use in that role. Sometimes it's kind of frustrating because the AI tends to jump around a bit it terms of whether a guy is a closer or a setup guy etc.

Well in my current random Aroldis Chapman has been an absolute beast as a closer. Chapman is somewhat of a nomad as he's played for quite a few teams, but he's saved roughly 415 games(at work, so don't know exact number).

Then there's Jim Handiboe. Now if you look up Handiboe, you will see that he pitched one season in the bigs 1886, going 7-7 in 14 starts. He did so as a 19 year old. Well in my current random debut, the AI decided to use Handiboe as a closer and wow has flourished. Jim is closing in on 400 saves and he's only 29 years old. It's going to be interesting to see how his career plays out.

Just started the 2002 post season.

Babe Ruth finished his Hall of Fame career with 473 home runs. When 2003 begins, Dwight Evans will need only 3 home runs to tie the Babe and 4 to become the leagues new home run king. I'm assuming Evans will be back for the 2003 season, but he will be 39 years old and you never know what the OOTP God's will provide in terms of destruction. Evans is also closing in on 2000 RBI needing roughly 79. He is currently sitting at 99.5 WAR. The league has only one position player with 100+WAR, Billy Hamilton. Evans is also a member of the 3000 hit club.

It's strange, I know the better results come from using high fatigue, but I just don't enjoy that setting. Are any of you in the same boat?

Hey David. This looks like a fun league and similar to something I have been trying to setup and the stats are all over the place. I selected 1978 as a base year (lower HR year) and Gehrig is hitting over 70 homeruns a year a guy named Tim Murnane is hitting over 60 HRs. My pitching leaderboard is filled with guys from the 1800's and early 1900s. Bobby Mathews had 342 k's in 190 IP for a 16.2 K/9. Are you changing any additional settings or just selecting a base year?

Thanks

I use a series of years for my base year. 1980-1986. Each year on the day before the season starts, I enter one of those year in the League totals select year slot. I let the game run the calculations to determine my modifiers. I then play my season. My high for strikeouts was 366 by Rube Waddell. Rube has 2 more 300+ strikeout years, 308 and 306. My high for home runs is 50 by Charlie Hickman.

This is actually my first random using pre 1901 player. I used to always use 1901 as my minimum year.

Ok, I think selecting the year before each season helps. I was selecting the year when I created the league. Thank you!

I use high fatigue but I have injuries off. My teams generally have a day off every 6-10 days so if I use a lower fatigue setting then my SS, 2nd basemen etc will end up with almost as many games played as the 1st baseman.
I play a 146 game schedule and my 1st basemen average 142 games played. My SS about 133 games played. My catchers about 110 games.

Freddy Freeman is the newest member of the 3000 hit club. Meanwhile, Freeman's teammate on the Chicago Bandits, Dwight Evans only needs one more home run to tie Babe Ruth for the all-time home run lead. It's July 2nd and Evans only has 2 home runs on the season. Age has caught up to Freeman and Evans both. The Bandits have them batting in the lower half of the lineup, but so far both are playing on a daily basis.
