3500 Card update.
Biggest news was an actual decent historical perfect, Jack Glasscock. Using him against LHP and it is pretty hard to get a usable card out of a pack nowadays so that was fun. Did pretty poorly outside of that though.

Packs are so bad at this point in the game. I'd hate to see how many 6 live trash packs you've gotten.

In retrospect I should have kept track of 50 point packs. I'm sure its about a thousand at this point.

And yes they really are quite bad and a horrible return on investment. I didn't spend much this week trying to complete my last few missions from last week but got red hot in tournaments the last two days (about 80 packs) so it didn't feel quite so bad having crappy luck.

I haven’t been tracking closely but the packs that I get from tournaments have been providing solid returns, particularly from Silver and Gold cards in sought after missions. The live Gold and Diamond cards that I get feed some quick points from their sales and fairly regularly I get a good Diamond that I can sell for 20K-60K. It doesn’t take many of those to raise the average value of packs.

I know it isn't at all scientific but I've felt the same way, that my tournament reward packs do better than ones I buy. Another thing I've noticed that is completely unscientific is that when there are big drops with a ton of missions and new cards my luck tends to go right into the toilet!

4000 pack update!

Things have been going very poorly, and with very few decent (25k+) sellable cards it has really slowed me down. I think the 3 historical diamonds I pulled in the last 500 packs probably sold for around 40k total which is a bummer. As the sample size increases I am starting to trust the fact that diamond historical% is less than it is for gold and silver, which is another bummer.

I probably will start only using tournament winnings for packs going forward if I want to make it back to PeL again, too many chase cards have been added to win diamond leagues with a mission only team - we'll see if that changes this Thursday. Gotta start saving up for some upgrades! So 4500 pack update is probably a decent ways off.

I made enough money off of extra historical duplicates after the last mission drop that I decided to forge ahead to 5000 packs before I put a bow on this thing. So here it is, 4500 pack update. Two historical perfects, both catchers - unfortunately they were Molina and Ted Simmons.

Pushed through to 5000 packs. Discovered I had a major formula error on the diamond historical %, pulling from the wrong field. So yeah now it looks a lot more like you'd expect.

And so the great pack opening experiment is concluded. For those of you trying to strike it rich, I had only 6 cards worth over 50k and only one worth over 100k (debatably, Jack Glasscock). I should have kept track but I'd guess about 500 or so of the packs came from tournaments, so I probably spent well over 4 million PP and ended up with a quicksell value for silver and up cards of about 1.86 million. If I estimate bronze/iron quicksell value that adds another 332k for a total of about 2.2 million, which really is a lot better than I'd expect. I didn't keep track of what stuff sold for really, but even if the historical silvers averaged about 1.5k and the historical golds about 2.5k that would give me almost another 1 mil. The bigger benefit was probably having the last few mission sets almost fully complete just by stuff sitting in my card inventory, saving me a lot of overpriced purchases.

Just purely a guess based on what I saw through this project, but I'd say given enough time you'll probably lose about 20-30% of what you spend unless you have some really good luck on historical perfects. I didn't, with none of them worth very much. It was still interesting to see!
