...and just now, additional races in Mugello and Sochi in September were confirmed.

"In September 2019, negotiations with Lamigo Monkeys to acquire the team closed successfully. With the sale, Rakuten became the first foreign company to own a Chinese Professional Baseball League team. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The team name was formally changed to the Rakuten Monkeys on 17 December 2019." Uh, say, Rakuten owns Rakuten Kobo Inc., the maker of the e-reader that I like! (I actually prefer the Moon+ Reader app on my phone now but I fear repeated draining and recharging effects on my battery so my Kobo, with phone nearby for desired research, is a practical alternative.) Uh, well then . . . I root for the Monkeys! Go Monkeys, yeah!

I caught some Spikeball on ESPN U this morning - I'm assuming it was a rebroadcast. I was a bit disappointed that the ball didn't actually have spikes. Weird little game.
What the world needs now is a professional lawn dart association. |

I enjoyed today's Styrian GP, held at the same track as last week for pandemic convenience.

Is Spikeball the game with the basketball goals and the trampolines? I remember ESPN pushing that one for a while. I was amused at the fouls they would call, they always sounded like the ones we would make up on the spot during various games played on make-shift grounds, "Bouncing twice on the right trampoline and then moving to the left trampoline with out a dribble" and things like that. It was a vaguely amusing game for a few minutes, but someone would eventually have gotten killed.

Slamball (the sport boomcoach is referring to) stopped decades but it is still around in China (and Brazil last I checked?) there's a good StartUp podcast episode about the guy behind it

For what it’s worth, I don’t think anybody really says that. Also, why hasn’t a professional team handball league been started in the US yet? That sport is bananas - I think it would do as well as the PBA. |

I have been enjoying the MLS is Back tournament so far. Some lackluster games, but also some very exciting ones. My enjoyment isn't hurt at all by the fact that my Crew are 2-0, with two shutouts.

But A-Rod is making this broadcast unwatchable.
He loves the universal D-H. He loves starting extra innings with a runner on second. He loves all the politics that are being dragged into the game. If all broadcasts are like this, and I have a feeling they will, I may wait until 2021 to start following the sport again. Last edited by rink23; 07-23-2020 at 08:46 PM. |

A-Rod is a pain in the bum, but it's still baseball down on the field.
And I was already mad that ESPN is taking two of the first three Mets games, replacing our first-rate broadcasters with ... well, THIS... but it's still baseball down on the field.

I agree with the Mets' broadcast team. It is the cream of the crop.
Cardinals TV crew is almost unwatchable. Edmonds is the best of them, as he knows the game so well and has enough cred as a player to call people out without fear of losing his job. But he's still very raw and learning how to work in the booth. |

This reminds me of August 9, 1998, when the Cubs' attempted to play the first night game at Wrigley Field.
It got rained out. I was there, I think they got into the third inning before the heaven's opened up. Maybe it's The Higher Power's way of saying this whole thing is a bad idea. Last edited by rink23; 07-23-2020 at 09:41 PM. |

Alright, gonna go to bed; have to drop by the office briefly once more in the morning to get some things sorted out before devoting the next week to baseball, baseball, baseball.
