The first month of 1925 regular season in AL saw defending Champions Cleveland Indians battle with Yankees for conference lead, but other teams are very close (between first and last place there are 3 and a half games). Al Simmons leads the league with 1.381 OPS (.507 BA) and 4 HR and we have to register a 6 hit game (Taylor Douthit, Indians). In NL the Giants lead the way with 13 W and 4 L, with a 2 game lead on Cubs and 3 and a half games on Phillies. It's a less competitive conference, Robins are last with 5-11. Hornsby (STL), as always, lead the NL in many stats (OPS, HR, WAR) while the pitching staff of New York Giants is on fire.
In May there is the third no-hitter of this universe, with Syl Johnson (Senators) silencing Red Sox bats in a 3-0 W; also there is a big injury: Walter Johnson (Giants) will miss 7 weeks with a rotator cuff strain (and for a 37 year old this could be a problem). In AL everyhing changes: a big month put Senators on top of the league, with 27-16, battling with Cleveland (29-18). Whites Sox and Browns are third and fourth (5 and 6 games back) while Yankees had a bad month (20-25) despite a superhuman Babe Ruth (11 HR in the month). Al Simmons continues to shine, but also Babe Herman (Tigers) is having a monster season. In NL G>iants and Cubs continues their battle, Giants sits on top with 30-17 while Cubbies are 1 game back. Bad month for Cardinals, 17-29 and only Robins did worse (15-30). June brings milestones : Tris Speaker reached 3000 hits in a loss with Boston (June 5th), Eddie Collins Sr (White Sox) reached 3000 hits in a win 6-5 against Senators (June 6th), George Sisler (Browns) reached 2000 hits and we had also a 25 run game (Cardinals beat Reds 25-2, with a 7 game RBI by Mueller), a 3 HR game (Babe Ruth). In standings, Senators continue their run, gaining a 9 and a half lead on Indians while the historical duo Yankees-Red Sox closes the conference; Al Simmons and Tris Speaker are above .400 mark in average and Babe Ruth got 23 dingers. For National League June sets the rise of the Cubs: they close the month with a 44-28 record, leading Phillies by 1 and Giants by 1 and a half. Paul Waner (PHI) and Ross Youngs carry into the summer a .400 BA Next post: 1925 Season part 2 |
